During a sailing vacation on Lake Texoma, private detective Rafferty finds himself the prime suspect in the brutal slaying of a local girl when it is discovered that he had been the last to see her alive
W. Glenn Duncan was a former journalist and pilot who lived in Iowa, Ohio, Florida, Texas and California, before settling in Australia with his wife and three children.
Love the Rafferty P I books. Always a good mystery with interesting characters. Raffertys sense of humor keeps me reading. Like everything Duncan writes.
got for free. 9 book series. "Rafferty: Hardboiled P.I.". out Augst 3, 2017. can i be totally honest and hopefully not hurt any1's feelings here?? not a fan of that book cover. i mean i love a good pier (what is hilarious about this speech i am giving here, the book cover you seen on Amazon is not the same here on Goodreads?? what the heck?? these 2 here on Goodreads ...a lot better picks? that is so strange?? weird???!?!) ...pier scenes are awesome. i have seen plenty in my lifetime but something about this one kind of bugs me ...it is like it is missing a piece? a tree? a farther off scene, something? it needs to be connected. this got me: "Two strangers walk into a bar. By noon the next day one will be dead, the other in jail. That ain’t no joke …" i mean doesn't that pull u in as well?? assassination thrillers (didn't realize this was a thing? i learn something over and over with Amazon, ranking system). noir crime (i only recently got use to see that one. what?? i think i even ask an author about). vigilante justice. i will read more. soon i hope?!?!
Rafferty is a capable P.I. who gets the job done and doesn't take himself too seriously. His love interest gives him a birthday gift of a week's sailboat rental on a quiet lake. But trouble seems to find Rafferty. A young lady is found brutally murdered. Rafferty was last seen with her. So, even when on vacation, he gets in hot water and is arrested. Over the next few weeks Rafferty finds a lot of strange operators and circumstances that raise too many flags and warning bells. But cool heads, logic, and effective sleuthing yield answers and evidence to bring the orrect person to justice. A compelling and humorous read.
This is the second mystery in the P.I. Rafferty series. It is an interesting read about the death of a woman which winds up entangling many people in a small town in Northern Texas. The case seemed simple at first, but it became more complex as the investigation by Rafferty evolved. There is danger and violence in Rafferty’s investigation as he has back-up from some operatives he has worked with in the past. The characters are well defined, both the main characters and the supporting cast. People behave as you might expect. There are no sudden unexplained surprises or clues revealed. It is a proper investigation that unravels the crime.
A nice week long relaxing boating vacation is anything but. Rafferty gets caught up in a murder and he is suspect #1. Once he is cleared by the sheriff he starts investigating. Who said little towns are nice and quiet? Rafferty along with Cowboy and Mimi get involved with murder, blackmail, boats burning, drugs and you name it. Of course it is lightened up with humour reminiscent of old detectives from the forties and fifties. This book has it all.
Another enjoyable read for those who like a bit of PI action. This time Rafferty is given a week on a boat as a birthday gift from Hilda on an East Texas lake and while enjoying himself as a sailor he gets caught up in a murder. He is initially a suspect but then goes about trying to solve the murder, and with the help of Cowboy and Mimi and their firepower, takes on the bad guys. Definitely not a literary masterpiece but a quick read. I give it a 3 1/2.
Sometimes the second book is bit of a let down. Not so here. Rafferty is just as smart ass as in the first book and his lady is just as...precious. There are new characters but we also welcome back Coyote and Mimi. Lots of action and mystery. Very good read. Highly recommended.
Hilda gets Rafferty a boat holiday and of course he is accused of a murder so has to investigate to clear any wrongful accusations uncovering all kinds of crimes along the way and helping the local sheriff. Mimi and Cowboy get to help and people get beaten up in a humorous manner along the way. Fun book and compulsive reading.
This is my first Rafferty read. He’s a smart mouthed PI going about his business time off, loving life on a boat until he can’t any more. Murder, blackmail, and a dirty politician combine to make Rafferty’s life difficult. This is definitely a good mystery and well worth reading.
Rafferty is on holiday, alone on a boat. It starts well as he is accused of the murder of Cynthia Lawson, then gets beaten up. This makes him involved. But why was she killed and by whom. An entertaining crime story
No I didn’t like it. Now I have to come up with 20 words why. Don’t bother reading it. Unless you talk and think like this story is written. Oh, did I mention spelling mistakes, so yeah it’s also poorly proof read.
I enjoyed this book very much and the character descriptions were great. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author. I liked that it was NOT predictable. I find some books 35 pages in I have an idea of the outcome. This plot kept me guessing. Would definitely recommend!
This was an OK book. Not great but not bad. It moved fairly quickly. While the author didn't state that all Christians were "nut jobs", almost all the "nut jobs" in this book were Christians. I find that kind of generalization to be offensive.
Most enjoyable reading. Very engaging and entertaining. Kept me thinking ahead about who was the guilty party. Looking forward to reading the 1st in the series..
A birthday present from Hilda of a week's yacht (sailboat) hire goes wrong when Rafferty wakes up on his first morning aboard only to be arrested on suspicion of murder.
Kept me interested. Noticed a few more errors in this book, though. Dropped words, etc. That's annoying. I wish whoever proof reads these things would do a better job.
I liked it. Hadn’t read or heard of the author before. Glad I took the chance. Good characters. Good story line. Nice action. Will definitely look out for more of Mr. Rafferty. Recommended.
I loved the hero. Rafferty seems like a great guy. I loved the quality of the writing, refined use of language. A smooth read. Did not want to put it down.
This story was a little hard to follow sometimes. Lots of action. So many different scenarios it was difficult to connect. Still the characters were intriguing.
