She thought he was her dream. But nightmares wear beautiful faces too.
Journella and her brothers survive a jet crash—only to wake up safe at home, as if it never happened. Her brothers have no memory of the crash or the strange, magical realm they landed in.
The worst part is that Journella remembers everything.
Brushed off as delusional, she begins to question her own sanity… until a letter arrives from the mysterious Shadow Prince, confirming that the realm was real.
But the prince’s charm hides a dangerous truth. He didn’t seek her out to help her—he needs her blood, and he’ll do whatever it takes to claim it.
Even kill her.
As his threats turn deadly, Journella's life becomes a perilous game of power and deceit.
Caught between protecting her family and resisting a man who’s both infuriating and unfairly attractive, Journella must decide if she’ll fight him... or fall for him.
Or maybe stab him first. Who knows.
(Trigger this book contains blood, violence, and a murder scene.)
Oh my word! This book was a whirlwind! But it in the best way. I loved it! Katelyn is writes some of the best enemies to lovers books I have ever read. This one did not disappoint! I was hooked from the beginning! The plot and world building was fantastic. The snarky banter was chef’s kiss! The letters 😍😍😍 This book was me laughing and tearing up in places. Journella was sassy and fierce. She had great character development. I really loved the Shadow Prince! Hands down my favorite character. Oh my word the ending! I really need the next book. The romance was no spice and kisses only.
I volunteered to read an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.
Note: This is an ARC review. Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review her book ✨️ I am leaving a review voluntarily 🙇♀️
3.25 ⭐️
The premise and the plot itself were very interesting—a girl and her brothers accidentally travelling into another realm and discovering magical creatures. However, they got sent back into their world before they got to explore, and to the fmc's luck, her brothers' memory were wiped. Brushed off as delusional, she then meets a shadow prince that is on a mission to get her blood, going as far as attempting to kill her. Caught between wanting to protect her family and resisting a man who's both infuriating and unfairly attractive, Journella must decide if she'll fight him... or fall for him. Reading the blurb, I was a bit surprised that it didn't really describe the actual details of the book. I didn't mind, though!! I do like going into the world blind, so surprises and twists were well appreciated 👏
One thing I wish could have been better would be the emotional writing. There were certain dialogues and emotions in the chapters that made me feel like I was emotionally whiplashed. One moment, the FMC is angry, and then another moment she's resigned, and then she's angry again. I do get that we wanted to highlight the FMC's struggles and that she's not flawless (which I think is the author's goal), but I ended up being a bit disoriented with how much the mood flipped. Kind of like the chapter/story couldn't decide what tone it wanted to take on. The same idea can be applied to Journella's stand with her family. Although, I do appreciate the realistic writing on this one. The author was able to show how toxic a family can be and still have the want to protect them from harm.
Also, I honestly couldn't pinpoint the moment the fmc liked the mmc. We do have scenes where she finds him attractive and that he's not that bad, but I feel like there was a lack of build-up. I don't consider their banter or conversations as build ups because the fmc was always emotionally charged, usually by anger, and the mmc would be either regretful or teasing.
Other than that, I liked the story!! It has the potential to be really, really good, and with that ending?? I can't believe I have to wait for the next one to come out 😔🤘
Halo My Heart by Katelyn Daliath is a magical story that keeps you gripped till the end.
We are transported into a story of change, and magical world building. A world that runs along side ours, a portal that is different from ours, full of talking animals, magic users, and hidden curses. How can you not fall in love with that? Who wouldn’t want to ride a Pegasus? Who wouldn’t want to speak with a talking fox? This book was like living my fantasy dream, and made me think of the possibilities about another realm.
The characters were complex and had a ton of secrets and a lot of baggage to unpack. From past traumas, deep family history, and unknown identities it seriously was an interesting read. Journey is a multifaceted female character, intense independence, defiant streak, and someone who rarely gives forgiveness. Edam is wow. I really got whiplash with him, and I’m soooooooooo interested into seeing how Journey and Edam interact with each other in the future. That ending thoughhhhhhhhh. I need the next book nowwwwwww.
If you want a crazy, page-gripping no-spice romantic fantasy this is the one for you.
I NEED the next book in this series...NOW! (Spoiler Free Review Below)
This book made me laugh, gasp, blush, and come close to shedding tears. I can usually see plot twists coming, but this book caught me off guard many, many times in the best (or worst) ways possible :)
A sassy FMC with an attitude and a morally gray MMC with a knack for smirking. These two pulled me in instantly. Their banter was something else that had me close to laughing out loud several times. I cannot wait to see what happens with them in the next book.
The only reason this book isn't getting five stars is that it took me a couple of chapters to get into the book fully. But once I was immersed in this amazing world, I couldn't pull myself out.
If you love: -First sight infatuation to enemies -Crime partners to lovers -Sassy, morally gray MMC -Forbidden love -4 annoying older brothers -HILARIOUS banter -Letters from a mysterious 'Prince' -And MCs who try to kill each other
This is the book for you. If you're interested at all, do not hesitate to buy this book. It's worth it.
I want to thank the amazing author, Katelyn Daliath, for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this book. I will be, begrudgingly, waiting for the next book.
How do you start a review of a story that left you speechless? There are protagonists with walls that never break, but this book was different. Breaking and building again. That's what the journey felt like.
Use of Language From the beginning, "Halo My Heart" started off strong with wordplay. Rhymes and hidden meanings. No detail was written haphazardly, as everything was used in its proper time.
Realistic dialogue. Heartbreaking reflections. Descriptions of the setting and characters. I was fascinated by every detail of the writing style. Although I admit there were two dialogues that made me cringe, I quickly forgot about them as the plot progressed.
Plot It seemed a bit simple at first, but it became complex along the way. From the first chapter, it captivated me. Many events felt spontaneous. Perhaps I would have liked a faster timeline to see more content regarding the villain and the main threat. However, the ending was everything. I haven't suffered this much since the epilogue of "The Ballad Of Never After".
Worldbuilding and Magic System One of the strongest points of the read was the worldbuilding and its system. Diverse and imaginative. It was well explained and had coherent limitations. Also, with a bit of tragic lore. I loved the meanings behind the roses. Those kinds of details enliven the culture of a new world.
Characters Main: Journella is one of my favorite protagonists from 2025. Seemingly tough, stubborn, and strong on the outside. What makes her human are the fears she hides, which one can relate to at many stages of life. Impulsive? Absolutely. A ray of sunshine that infects her adventurous spirit? Absolutely, although she'd say no. I'm already looking forward to seeing her development in the next installment.
On the other hand, about Edam, finally someone understands the definition of morally ambiguous! Both charismatic and mysterious with his motives, he's a gem. He'd be my new fictional crush if it weren't for the ending.
Supporting characters (SPOILERS):
Conclusion A brilliant no-spice romantic fantasy read. It's like a spark searching for its other half to light a warm fire. Great chemistry. Seriously, highly recommended. I see a lot of potential to explore in the sequel. I hope more readers enjoy this book.
A beautifully immersive experience, with rich scene descriptions and poetic writing.
The book felt more unique and original than a lot of romantasy out there. Katelyn Daliath writes memorable characters, with deliciously layered plots that unfold like a tapestry; Halo My Heart is no different. This was why I was quite happy to join as an ARC reader, after falling in love with the richness of characters, plots and poetic descriptions of scenery she does so well.
Emotional Journey of the Reader & Story Pacing There was some very good use of light and shade in the book, where, in order to truly appreciate the highs and the beautiful moments, the reader must also walk through the lows and the dark moments. This is one of Katelyn Daliath's strengths.
However, in this particular book, towards the middle/end, a bit too much time was spent on the lows that I ended up putting the book down for a month before I had the emotional energy to pick it back up. The FMC spent a little too much time on each occasion arguing how hopeless circumstances were - this would benefit from editing to be more concise to get the point across without slowing down the pacing.
Ending & MMC
*Vague Spoilers*
There are some inconsistencies with the MMC, where the actual vulnerability given in the book throughout the story is not consistent with the ending. This has the effect of breaking the fourth wall at the end, where you are no longer immersed in the book, becoming aware of the writing.
I could not help but notice that the ending does not psychologically fit the rest of the MMC's arc or psyche completely. It would have made more sense if only perceived vulnerability were given throughout the book to fit the ending, rather than the level of deep vulnerability and weaknesses that could be exploited that were actually given. Particularly, where the MMC introduces the FMC to his family, and all mentions of his family do not fit the character portrayed at the end.
The ending had the effect of almost splitting the work into two books or two realities that did not quite mesh together. It may make sense to stop before the last chapters. However, there is a sequel to the book, which may explain some of the inconsistencies. Fair warning, the ending is tragic and would have benefited from a line or two giving the FMC determination to fuel her rise from the ashes in the next book.
Kaitlyn Daliath is a very talented writer. There were some very beautiful lines in this story. The world-building was also excellent. I really liked the magic system and the fantasy world she created.
It is going to be very hard to write this review without giving spoilers.
First off, I loved that there were pegasus (even if they weren't in the story a lot). There are not enough fantasy books with winged horses. ❤️
I also appreciated the faith elements in this story. The book was not full of religion or preachy, so if religion in books isn't your thing, don't let it keep you from reading the story. It is just a nice inclusion (the character being given a Bible, some mentions of the Creator, etc.)
I liked the characters in the fantasy realm. I hope we get to know some of the characters better in book 2 (the princes, the family) and I hope we get to see more of our favorite talking fox.
I know some people are not Team Edam because he is morally gray, but I really liked Edam! I think it was easy for me because I was never very interested in Journey (Sorry 😔). There were times I felt sympathy for her, but I found her kind of bratty & immature. At one point she is referred to as a drama queen & it's kind of fitting 😅. There were moments where she showed potential to grow & be better so hopefully that happens in book 2. Edam definitely has his flaws as well. His backstory is heartbreaking.
Her family was frustrating sometimes & I can understand some of her displeasure with them, but I can also understand their reactions to her as well. I hope we see some healing between them in the next book because I do like her brothers (for the most part) & I think her parents do care if they could get over themselves a bit.
There was plenty of banter in this book! Edam’s flirty banter and Journey’s irritation and sass were entertaining. There are also plenty of sweet & swoony moments as well.
The ending packs quite a punch & I have a few theories about what will happen. . . But I don't want to give anything away in this review. . . So you will have to read to see what happened.
This book is quite the wild ride & the last 20% is pretty intense, so be prepared.
warnings: no swearing but Journella uses the word freaking a lot, a torture scene, murder, morally grey characters, disruptive family dynamics
I think I still need a minute to recover from this book 😭 because that ending wrecked me in the best and worst way. I’m still sitting here, blinking into space, whispering “Shadow Prince, whyyyyy?” 😩💔
So here’s the setup 👀👇 Journella and her brothers survive a plane crash, only to wake up safe at home like it never happened. Except… Journella remembers everything. The strange realm. The impossible magic. The mysterious, dangerously charming Shadow Prince who definitely wasn’t human. But when a letter from him arrives confirming the realm was real, her sanity (and heart) go spiraling.
Because let’s be honest… nightmares sometimes wear beautiful faces. 😏🔥
What follows is a wild blend of magic, betrayal, blood, and slow-burn tension that had me ranting to an invisible audience in my room. Journella is fierce but soft, and the Shadow Prince? The definition of morally grey. One minute I wanted to hug him, the next I wanted to stab him, right alongside Journella. 😂⚔️
✨ What I loved: •The banter between Journella and the Prince = gold 💫 •The worldbuilding was lush and immersive •The emotional twists and turns sprinkled throughout the story... that ending still hurts 😭 And the fact that beneath all the fantasy, it’s really about trust, pain, and what love looks like when everything falls apart.
My tiny gripe? The prose leaned a bit too flowery at times, which slowed down the pace for me. But honestly, the story was so rich and imaginative that I didn’t mind too much. 🌌
And again, that ENDING?? Absolute heartbreak. I need book 2 of the Shadow Prince series like air. 😭💨
Wow this book was a lot. My first thoughts after reading the first two chapters was (This feels like something out of Narnia as the main character and her brothers are dragged into another realm like in Prince Caspian.) Things took a dark turn though as they are thrust back into the real world and only she remembers what happened. Poor Journella seems like a magnet for chaos as the book continues. If you are like me and are not a big fan of cliffhangers. I recommend till the second book is written reading up to the kiss in “Chapter 33. Dearly Beloved… a Toast to Disaster”, lest you be doomed to share my fate of waiting impatiently for book 2.
Overall I really liked the book. At first I was very confused with what in the world was happening but I as I continued and learned more I began to like the book. Edam was by far my favorite character! (Well up till what happened in the last chapter. I refuse to believe that what happened was as cut and dry as it appeared. Magic was involved somehow to ensure that Journella lived.)
I loved how in the last few chapters Journella seemed to struggle with her faith a bit. It’s kind of obvious she isn’t a Christian in the book even if she doesn’t say it in the beginning. But in the end after she was broken I think now when she has nowhere to turn she’s in a place where she could come to Christ. If Noella is brought into the next book I think she could really help her sister with that.
I received this book as an ARC 💖 and I'm leaving my review voluntarily.
3.75 ⭐
The story itself is captivating and has an interesting premise: Journella discovers the magic that resides in her family after an event that involves both her and her siblings with this mysterious "Shadow Prince."
One thing I really like is that it portrays well how a family can be toxic and harmful, but that doesn't mean there isn't love and concern for each another. The longing for love that stems from trauma and a fear of being abandoned in one's own home.
What I didn't like was that the descriptions of Journella's emotions were very shallow and repetitive. I understood that she's not perfect, that she gets frustrated, angry, and reacts childishly, but it felt repetitive and plain at moments.
Also, even though I really like the protagonists' relationship, I don't feel there was enough development to go from enemies to lovers. They were constantly annoying each other and only shared a few moments where they had important conversations, but they didn't really share much about each other, to be honest.
Possible spoiler: I'm at least 90% sure that the last part was to save her, a desperate measure to make her stop loving him and thus halt the progress of the curse.
OHHH honey, let’s talk about Halo My Heart by Katelyn Daliath, because that book? It’s giving drama, betrayal, and emotional damage in the most delicious way possible. 💅
So picture this, sweet, innocent Journella, just trying to escape her toxic family (and honestly, same girl, SAME 😭). She’s been through it, and you can feel every ounce of that heartbreak like it’s your own. And don’t even get me started on her brothers, ugh, those walking red flags. Someone hand them a mirror and a lifetime supply of guilt, because WOW.
And then enters the Shadow Prince, Edam. Whew. That man. You think he’s gonna be the dark, mysterious savior, right? WRONG. He’s out here being all selfish and shady, classic “I’m doing this for your own good” energy, but we know the truth. 🙄 Like, sir, maybe try trusting the main girl for once instead of ruining her life?
By the end? Girl. I was screaming. I was throwing the book. I was mourning my emotional stability. Because that ending?? That wasn’t just a twist, that was a personal attack.
So yeah, if you’re ready to cry, rage, and question everyone’s morals while clutching your chest, Halo My Heart is your next obsession.
This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I loved the subtle faith themes woven into it and the slowburn enemies to lovers romance. I was squealing, heartbroken for Journella, and gripped to find out what would happen. The only reason I’m taking off one star is… that ending! You mean I have to wait to find out what happens? 😭
Favourite quotes:
“You ruin me first and then decide I'm worth something after." His gaze darkened. "No." His voice was firm. "I decided I was the one who wasn't worthy.
“When someone hurts you, breaks your trust, and then hands you an apology like it's enough, it feels insulting. It feels like an afterthought, an attempt to absolve themselves rather than heal you."
Nothing that risks your life is worth changing the world.
“Creator help the fool who thinks they can hold your heart in their hands and not cherish it like it is the rarest thing in existence…”
“I’m going to make you beg me to say your name, until you're driven mad with longing to hear it."
“I'd steal the stars from the sky and bathe you in their light just to remind you of your worth.”
Thank you to the author for my ARC; all opinions are mine.
I had to wait a bit to write a review so I could gather my thoughts. The first couple chapters took me a little bit to really get into but then I was absolutely hooked! I loved the banter between Journella and Edam! Both characters were so fun and I loved them so much! Journella had me laughing so many times. I loved that Edam wrote her letters and taunted her with them (and honestly he taunted her all the time and I loved it!)! His letters were one of my favorite part! Despite this book being over 500 pages, I read it in a day. I could not put it down. Everytime I attempted, I couldn't stop thinking about it and would yank it back out. The ending however still has me speechless! I was prepared for a plot twist. I knew one was coming but I was not expecting that. I need the next book immediately. I will definitely be getting a physical copy for a shelf trophy!
Top favorite YA Romantasy! A very magical story that keeps you gripped till the end. This book had me laughing and tearing up in some places. We were transported to a magical world where the characters were complex with a ton of secrets and a lot of baggage to unpack. This was a crazy, page-gripping no-spice romantasy. I’m was honored to have been able to ARC read this book! I can’t wait to see what comes next. Tropes: -First sight infatuation to enemies -Crime partners to lovers -Sassy, morally gray MMC -Forbidden love -4 annoying older brothers -HILARIOUS banter -Letters from a mysterious 'Prince' -And MCs who try to kill each other Trigger Warning: -Blood -Violence -Murder scene
Halo My Heart was an interesting and unique book. It took me a little time to get into it at the beginning, but once the story got moving, it was easy and fun to read. The duel realms were cool, and it added to the story's interesting quality. The characters were good. I think personally I would have liked to see a little more growth in them, but I still enjoyed following their story. This is a no spice story, and there are some violent scenes. It also ends on a cliffhanger, so prepare yourself! Overall, I enjoyed this book and would go on to read the second one when it comes out. I did receive an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is an ARC review and I am so glad the author gave me a chance to read it. This arc made me laugh, cry and blush it was that good. This book caught me off guard, I really enjoyed the storyline. A sassy FMC with an attitude and a morally gray MMC with a knack for smirking. These two pulled me in instantly. I couldn’t put the book down.
This book is for you if you love -First sight infatuation to enemies -Crime partners to lovers -Sassy, morally gray MMC -Forbidden love -4 annoying older brothers -HILARIOUS banter -Letters from a mysterious 'Prince' -And MCs who try to kill each other
Halo my heart was a ginormous world wind of twists and turns of subtle family trauma, sibling rivalry and Enemies to lovers the undercurrent between our FMC Journella and our MMC the mysterious shadow prince was playful, spiteful hateful and beautiful. Twists and turns you will not see coming and till the last page you will not see the ending coming its draw droppingingly heart breaking. Kaitlyn weaved this magical story with wonder and delight also a little sadism at the end I mean that ending nearly destroyed me. I highly recommend this amazing novel.
Halo My Heart left my jaw on the floor! I absolutely adored it! Journella was so fun and bold and The Shadow Prince had me swooning the entire book! Halo My Heart has some of my all time favorite scenes! Katelyn Daliath’s writing swept me up in a whirl wind of banter, love, danger, and betrayal and I am dying for book two to come out! Also Halo My Heart has no spice! It’s a slow burn romance with kisses only!
I am blown away!! Such a great book! The world building is easy to follow and understand. The characters are well defined and great to get to know. The story is single POV told through the eyes of the FMC, Journella.
Journella’s character is spunky, sassy, and gives don’t mess with me vibes. You’ll definitely fall in love with her! The path of life she goes on is difficult and you’ll cry and rage right along with her! I can’t wait for book 2!!!
I received an ARC for this book. 3.75 more like it. The ending lifted it from 3 Stars to the 4. Halo my heart is very, very slow paced in the beginning. At the start i really did like Journella but she got on my nerves after like 55% of the book. She never really listens and on some points sounded like a broken record. I did enjoy the ending though. Edam is a great character.
This story was a wild ride of emotions from the beginning. The ending was... well I don't want to spoil it, but I have my suspicions about the motivation of the character at the end!
-No Spice -Language: OMG said a few times and references of the middle finger a few times -Some violence, but not graphic
Easily 5 stars for the banters between Journella and her brothers (I love Elden HAHA). Journey was very sassy. I adore her so much! And her interactions with the MMC? Just chef's kiss <3
I'm so glad this was my first ARC experience. I truly enjoyed reading Halo My Heart. Thank you author for writing this. I'm so excited for book two!
This book is crazy!!! You will feel all the feelings, you will scream you will squeal. The ending had me floored. I have a love hate relationship with the MMC lol. Go read it when it’s available! I’m so honored to have been able to ARC read this book!
I was super excited to read this book but unfortunately it was a DNF, it had some quirky characters but it wasn’t a book for me but don’t let that stop you from picking it up and trying it yourself
WOW. This book blew my mind! I had high hopes going into Halo My Heart because I have read all of Katelyn's other books and most of her sister's. But she had to go and blow my expectations out of the water! This book is about Journella Redwood, the most fiery, pink-haired, sassy FMC I've ever read about who decides to write her own story. But soon after a mysterious event, she starts receiving letters from the enigmatic Shadow Prince and discovers that her family has magic and uncovers the magical kingdom of Astralone. And the MMC, guys? The literal EPITOME of swoony, brooding MMCs! Edam was the villain in the beginning of the story, but I loved him regardless! He was sweet, handsome, protective, funny, and I absolutely LOVED watching Journey and Edam's relationship grow. And when they say forbidden romance, it's ACTUALLY forbidden! I loved how we got to see both worlds. The plot? AMAZING. The stakes were actually sky-high! Some romantasy I've been reading lately has banter and dialogue that's cheesy, but this one? DELIVERS. This is a no-spice read with all of the romance, PG language and a few rude gestures, and a huge cliff-hanger at the end, so prepare yourself! Please read this, it was incredible! Thank you Katelyn Daliath so much for this ARC!!! All opinions are my own.
Halo My Heart is a paranormal romantasy between our world and a magical world. Katelyn has done a wonderful job creating a world unlike ours and I want to go!
Told from the perspective of Journella, the FMC, this story takes you on a ride. Journella has a past that has left her heartbroken and required her to put on a mask and her character is well written to reflect that.
Edam, the MMC, is a strong morally grey character who has a soft heart when it comes to Journella. He is strong and protective and will do anything for her.
This book is full of action, magic, suspense, heartbreak and TWISTS!!
If you like vibes that remind you of the Vampire Diaries (without vampires) and a swoony MMC who has a dark side you need to read this book!
Spice Level - 1 (kisses only)
Language - 1 (References to use of the middle finger)
Violence - 2 (st@bby and scenes of bl0od, not graphic)
Recommended - Yes
Katelyn writes no spice, young adult fantasy and this hits that mark. She did a great job with this and I can't wait to read book 2!!
I read an eARC of this book. Opinions honest and my own.
