Melody Jones Doesn't Make Mistakes.
But she may have just made the biggest one of her life.
She's agreed to go on a road trip with hunky Aidan Walsh, the Irish bloke she's been lusting after since the day they met.
Problem is, Aidan isn't single. Never has been and probably never will be.
So, as much as his smile may make her stomach flutter, she most definitely cannot go there.
It'll be okay. It's just one week.
She can restrain herself for seven days.
Really, she can.
The bigger problem will be keeping from Aidan— who's possibly her best friend and the only one who will "get it"— the fact that she may just have the same cancer that killed her mother.
No biggie.
She's just on the verge of a complete and total meltdown and can't turn to her best friend for support.
Look people. The writing in this book is really really good. But the plot was so angsty and frustrating that I just can't give it lots of stars. I've discovered that the kind of "makes me so angry I want to throat punch the H and his nosy friends" angst just isn't for me I guess. YOU may very well love this book it you are in the mood for great writing and high angst. Prepare for my rant:
Melody and Aiden have known each other for years. They are probably closer to each other than any other person. The only problem is that Aiden has a girlfriend.
I was worried that this was going to be a book about cheating. But Melody was so much better than that and wanted more for herself. She had pride and self respect and she has finally had enough.
Mel and Aiden spend some time together on a long road trip and you can really feel her pain. Aiden just wants to keep things as they are and it's just too painful for Melody to go on any more. This is where the angst and frustration come in. I totally understood how Mel was feeling and I was cheering her on as she said "enough"!
***Some Spoilers to follow***
What I liked: 1. All of the characters in this book were well written and were people I'd like to know in real life. They had real problems and handled them in a realistic way.
2. The writing was excellent. It brought out so many emotions in me. I may not have enjoyed the emotions but they were there. There is much more going on in this book than the drama with Mel and Aiden. And the author did a great job of drawing me in.
3. Melody and Aiden were really good friends. Aiden was kind, caring and sweet. He just had his head up his rear.
4. The author didn't sugar coat the challenges that Mel faced. And the way she handled her feelings about Aiden.
5. Mel has good friends in Dave and Jackie (I just wish they had her back instead of Aiden's). They let her express her frustration with the situation and I was right there with her saying "you tell 'em Mel!" The writing was just so good.
What I didn't like:
1. Aiden was a totally wimp. He was happy to just let things stay as they were. He wanted to have it all. A body in Lynn, and a friend and confidant in Melody. And when she tried to tell him how he was hurting he her, he just couldn't get it. It was like talking to a brick wall. He wouldn't respect her wishes and couldn't see how much pain he was causing her. I wanted to strangle him.
2. We aren't really given any explanation about Lynn. Obviously they aren't very serious. Just a convenience. She tells him he can go get his needs met other places. He spends most of his time away from her. So we never get a feel for why he stays. Other than that he's pathetic?
3. The happy ever after doesn't come until the last few pages. Seriously, it's like the last 10 pages or so. And then Aiden finally mans up and has an honest conversation. He's 40 years old for heaven's sake. Act like a grown up! And then it's just...over. I would have liked to have seen them be a couple for a while. Experience a little happily ever after with them. See them sail the world.
Likable characters, entertaining banter, and enough ups and downs to stay interesting, but it was a very slooow burn with a lot of repetitive inner monolgue. At times, it dragged a bit, and I wish it was told from dual perspectives.
Melody was everything I cannot stand in females…she was wishy washy/back and forth. She decided to end communication with Aidan—told him so—but then felt bad when he contacted her about taffy and felt like she had to respond. It was just so irritating the games she played. Because of that, I was constantly rolling my eyes, and really only finished this since I paid for it. The writing was good and flowed nicely.
Melody thought she found the one. Aiden was everything but she found out he was already taken. They have been emailing each other for years. There were times she would push back to get him out of her life. In the end, it was a friend that put them on the right track. Love the ending of the book.
I don't know if it's just because I had such a connection to a previously read book, or if I just am not in the mood for a novel such as this one- but I did not feel the pull to this novel that I normally do when I am reading a new novel. I will definitely have to try again later.
Having been in a similar circumstance once, I almost quit reading in the first quarter of the book because it pulled at my emotions too much. You can't help but feel for the poor girl. A good read, glad I stuck with it to the end.
I loved this book!! I loved the slow build up between the characters. So many are way too fast to the point of it seeming unreal. It was a unique story as well. I definitely recommend this book!!
Garbage. She’s in love with him but hates him, he’s in a LTR with a woman we never meet, they’re at odds for 98% of the book, and then BAM they’re together and in love with no explanation. This goes on my “authors to avoid” list.
Two people met, were attracted but one was in a relationship and neither would cross that line. They corresponded via internet and become good friends. Then they are thrown together for a week in which both are fighting the attraction. It goes on in that vein back and forth.
I unfortunately read the second one first, and of course there are a few spoilers. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star, was there are quite a few phrases and sentences that are duplicated in this book. Drove me crazy. I had to keep checking to see if I was on the right book.
