It's a Straightforward Walk from Here: Thru-Hiking Te Araroa

Rate this book
Why would a nearly 59-year-old overweight, sedentary church minister and counsellor with very little hiking experience choose to push away from his comfortable desk chair and attempt what some consider to be one of the world’s most difficult hikes? Because he dreamed of taking an epic journey for most of his life. Growing up in a military home in which he lived in 24 houses by his 22nd birthday, Kurt always found continuity and comfort in exploring the great outdoors. When he moved to New Zealand in 1999 with his wife and three children, his love of the outdoors was rekindled in this magical land. In 2023, life had slowed down, and an opportunity arose to make his dream a reality by hiking Te Araroa – a 3,000-kilometre trail from the top to the bottom of New Zealand. Did he have what it would take to complete this journey?

Come along with Kurt in his day-by-day recounting of hiking Te Araroa as he describes the highs and lows, the joys and sorrows, the boredom and panic, the loneliness and close relationships, and most importantly, the personal growth. Experience the anxiety-producing river crossings, shaky swing bridges, endless climbs, and knee-deep mud. Share in the joys and frustrations of daily family trail life, the difficulties of navigation, and logistical planning subject to weather, terrain, and unmarked trails.

Determined to be independent and hike solo, discover how he finds the most unlikely hiking companions and friendships that will last a lifetime.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It's a very honest and detailled retelling of everything Kurt experienced on Te Araroa. Kurt is a avid storyteller with an engaging writing style and it was another amazing way to relive his adventure (beside his video journal). In this book you can read about everything - the good, the bad - the hard days as well as the funny encounters along the way. Definitely a recommended read! Thank you for sharing your story with us Kurt!
