DNF. This book, in my opinion, was awful, for so many reasons: choppy writing, repetitive content that goes nowhere, a "mystery" that's extremely obvious, hideous characters (yes, that Nazi dude and the fascist dude are both awful and rapey, we get it. Why do we need to spend so much time with them?), a "love" story that's very unconvincing... the list goes on.
Oh, and I find it ironic that the author spent so much time doing historical research for WWII era northern Italy... and then in the 1990 timeline the nurse mentions using an ipod. Oops.
This book has a lot of problems, but I think it ultimately comes down to the characters. Because of the constant flips between the WWII timeline and the contemporary timeline, not to mention the weird mixture of first person, third person and omniscient POV, the reader doesn't really have an opportunity to connect with the characters. And most of the sections with Tomaso feel like treading the same ground we were introduced to in the first thirty pages of the novel, for the next few hundred pages. This book is a story that could have fit in a short story, stretched across 300 pages. And if the author fleshed out the characters it might have worked. But instead of deepening the characters, the author just dances around them, using fancy language and other tricks to obscure the fact that this book just doesn't have much to offer.
