Having loved the manhwa version I was excited to hear that the light novel would be published physically in English, as even though I’m not a huge fan of light novels I was curious about this one because I’d heard the plot was almost completely different than the manhwa and I wanted to see how and in what ways things were changed.
Well almost everything from Heli and Sooha’s first meeting to the romance to the very last battle and everything in between were either vastly different or flipped around as to when and how things go down, and while the vast majority of it I liked, some of it even more than the manhwa, I was also disappointed by a couple of things near the end which brought my enjoyment down a notch by the time I closed the book.
The only things that didn’t change were the characters’ personalities and relationships with each other, minus the love triangle which was totally axed in this version (yay!!!!). One thing I enjoyed far more here than in the manhwa were how the vampire and werewolf boys had to learn to work together much sooner and quicker AND throughout the entire story rather than just right at the end like they do in the manhwa, which results in them all being genuine friends by the end. I also liked that the werewolves had a legitimate reason for disliking the vampires at first rather than it just being the typical “vampires and werewolves hate each other because” reason; it gave things more weight and made the two groups becoming friends even more satisfying.
And while the majority of this BEAST of a book (a whopping 888 pages to be exact!) was well done and engaging with only a few translation errors, I will say once they reached the Blood Altar and meet Dardan for the first time (of whom we only see at the very end of the book rather than throughout like in the manhwa, making him far less scary and formidable) the plot and writing take a nose dive and fall apart as if whoever wrote this part didn’t know what to do which left me feeling dissatisfied and disappointed, as the climax is one of my favorite parts in the manhwa. It does wrap up completely though, so no weird cliffhangers, but also no conclusion to the crush only romance either which I thought was a super bizarre choice.
And while I liked some expansions of the world and how they got from place to place in a reasonable time frame (something the manhwa was SUPER confusing on) and the lack of the unnecessary love triangle, I have to say the manhwa is better and lands more emotional punches that work, even though I’d read the light novel again, which I can’t say about any others I’ve read, not to mention no one becomes ridiculously overpowered at the end, lol.
If you’re a fan of this story and these characters (or even just the K-Pop band they’re based on) I’d recommend giving it a shot! Otherwise if you’re new I’d say start with the manhwa then come back and read this one if you liked the first. It’s not perfect by any means but I found it enjoyable and I’d read it again in the future!

If you have to choose between the novel and the manhwa, I'd go with the manhwa. While the novel does expand on pretty much everything, the writing falls apart towards the end and it's really hard to keep all of the characters straight in text-only format. (No, the pin ups do not count.) This is entertaining, but I wouldn't necessarily call it good.
