If you have to choose between the novel and the manhwa, I'd go with the manhwa. While the novel does expand on pretty much everything, the writing falls apart towards the end and it's really hard to keep all of the characters straight in text-only format. (No, the pin ups do not count.) This is entertaining, but I wouldn't necessarily call it good.
