The American Psychiatric Association’s publication, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, has been the industry standard for clinicians, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, and policymakers since the original draft was published in 1952. The fifth revision of the Manual, informally known as DSM-5, was published in May 2013. While the Manual has been a valuable tool for decades, it is not without controversy. Ongoing concerns about the reliability and validity of the diagnostic categories exist across the industry, and these concerns have prompted the National Institute of Mental Health to develop an alternate framework for diagnosis and treatment. How these two standards will co-exist remains to be seen. This course will offer an introductory look at the new DSM-5, and emphasis is placed on the manual’s changes and transitions from the 4th edition.
