Ghostlight Falls

Bread by the Grim

Rate this book
Grim is a loner, not because he wants to be, but because he has a secret. By day, he's a mild-mannered monster running a bakery-cafe in the small town of Ghostlight Falls, but after midnight he's something else... something that needs to be contained. When an accident forces him to hire a new morning baker, he has no idea he's hiring the woman of his dreams.

But containing the monster inside of him isn't easy now that it has started to take notice. The monster's desires can't be satisfied with normal human expressions of love... the monster needs to breed, and nothing will get in its way once it takes over.

Set in Ghostlight Falls, the coolest fictional small town in the Pacific Northwest, Bread by the Grim is a standalone cozy paranormal insta-love breeding romance with an awkward MMC who can't control what he does after midnight and FMC who is here for it. It is a novella with wholesome Hallmark movie vibes and a good amount of steam.

What a cute grumpy sunshine! Phil was friendly and affectionate, but had a small streak of self consciousness. Grim was grumpy, introverted, and a perfectionist who was more self conscious than Phil. They had a good rapport working together and he gradually opened up to Phil. She was ever compassionate and he was ever supportive.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: dubcon (monster biology induced heat), speciesism, uncontrolled shifting, voluntary nightly closer confinement, adoption (past)

Thank you to the BookSirens and the author for the ARC of this book! All opinions are my own.

Yay! Another instalment in the Ghostlight Falls series and a great one at that. This was honestly so sweet and I loved exploring deeper topics like the importance of consent and feeling safe with somebody. I also appreciated the honest foreword of the author and her sensitive approach.

ARC Review

First, thank you so much to all the authors of the Ghostlight Falls series for the ARC!

Okay onto the juicy stuff, Grim and Phil are so stinking cute! Phil's affection and her constant pursuit in helping Grim was not only admirable, but so sweet like those cakes she bakes. I'm glad we even got to see more of the gremlin interacting with Phil too. Little Doux has to be the best character though. His little screams of hunger were hilarious. I highly recommend if you want something short n sweet.

Grim is a dreamboat. He keeps to himself, runs a bakery, and is handsome. He’s your typical resident of Ghostlight Falls - monster. What kind you ask? Nobody knows. Not even Grim. All he knows is that after midnight the monster in him must be contained.

When something happens and he has to hire a new morning baker, he starts to get nervous. Especially when she starts awakening his monstrous instincts in the middle of the day, and not instincts that anyone else can hear about. His monster needs to be bred. And we’re not taking about the edible kind.

Luckily for Grim his new morning baker is beautiful, accepting, patient, and willing to be bred.

Bread by the Grim is a standalone cozy paranormal insta-love breeding romance with an awkward MMC who can’t control what he does after midnight and a FMC who is here for it.

Bread by the Grim is part of the Ghostlight Falls universe. They say Keep Portland Weird but Ghostlight Falls is weirder. This is a shared world series set in the cutest little paranormal town in Oregon. There is a little bit of everything non-human, from shifters to sentient objects, and even a few alien encounters. Books released throughout the month of September 2025.

I was lucky to ARC read this one and it was one of my favorites from the series. Grim stole my heart from his bakery, his monster, to his reluctance about learning to love and accept himself. He’s an angel (not really, that’s a different book not in this series with a different MMC).

Just like with all my reviews, here are a few quotes from the book that I enjoyed:
•”His eyes hold mine just a little too long. What is he thinking? They’re so incredibly dark. I feel like he has me pinned to this spot. I can’t or won’t move. But honestly, I would love to be pinned by him—against the wall, over the island—good goddess, what is wrong with me?”
•”I want you, always, Grim. Whatever you look like for as long as you’ll have me.”
•”Grim feels safe with me. The thought takes my breath away. I’ve never felt so honored in my life.”

Bread and Grim – Dakota Cockaday

We’re back in Ghostlight Falls, baby, and it’s a mostly average sunny day except, ya know, when you’ve got Grim. Our resident baker… who’s green, lives in a closet, has an alter ego that’s basically a horny little gremlin, and let’s just say mornings are not his jam. (Honestly? Relatable.)

The poor guy’s morning baker takes a slip, breaks her ankle, and in swoops the fire department who… let’s be real… are a bunch of chaotic morons who manage to end up on Grim’s wrong side. (Honestly I’d pay money for a blooper reel of that moment.) So the baker’s niece is called in to take over when her aunt just decides: “I’m retiring, girl, good luck!”

What could go wrong? Everything. And it’s glorious.

We get longing. We get sexual frustration. We get wet dreams that had me straight-up giggling like a menace. We get a traumatized cat (justice for the kitty). We also get smut like, SMUT smut including some heavy breeding kink action that had me blinking and then nodding like, “Yeah okay, I see you, Grim.”

But honestly? What got me was the personal emotional growth. This was more than just horny chaos it was soft, it was sweet, and I adored seeing someone finally love Grim for him. My green closet gremlin baker deserves the world.

10/10, would let Grim bake me into his mess any day.

Oh my God I just want to hug Grim! What an absolute grump 😂 and just my type too.....a grump who goes absolutely feral (literally) for his chosen.

I seriously need to move to Ghostlight Falls, or at the very least visit! I need all my small talk to be centered around obnoxiously mating frogs and have no one even bat an eye about it. That has to be my favourite thing about this shared universe!

Phil was adorable! I loved that she didn't flinch away from Grim's more mindless side, and fully embraced him for everything that he is. The two of them together made my heart extremely happy, and I'm really glad I know the story behind the mysterious bakery owner now

Grim and Phil made for a very sweet pair. Grim’s character is established very quickly at the beginning, we see his caring and his self-doubt and shame. Then along comes Phil who can love him just the way he is.

This was another fun instalment in the Ghostlight Falls Saga. Cozy bakery vibes but with smut smut smut. While I enjoyed this, there were a couple of loose ends that didn’t feel entirely satisfying but with such a short book, I suppose that’s expected.

I volunteered to review a free ARC of this book for BookSirens

Adorable. I really liked both the MCs and the supportive grandma Sasquatch. It was a short and sweet, a very fast read, and no upsetting dark scenes or third-act-breakup. I genuinely didn't get the Gremlins reference until I was looking over the cover after I finished, but I probably would have figured it out if I read the other Ghostlight Falls books first; it looks like most of them are referencing something specific and nostalgic.

Okay I liked this more than I anticipated!! My first Dakota Cockaday book did not disappoint AT ALL.

That whole beginning with the incompetent firemen had me giggling to myself. Phil and Grim’s relationship chemistry was there immediately. Grim had to stop his Gremlin self from coming out at their first meet! There was plenty of character buildup and lots of detail (and spice 😉) what a fun read!!

I love Dakota’s writing and this one is no exception. Phil and Grim were *chef’s kiss* and so freaking adorable together. This is my fave kind of monster romance - forced proximity, fated mates, cinnamon roll on the outside and an actual BEAST on the inside. This one has some bite to it, too. 😉 So so SO GOOD.

This is so sweet. It was a short read, but with all the emotion, low angst, high spice, and so much love.
Grim hasn't learned to accept who he is and uses magic to control his other form as he sees himself as dangerous. Phil won't take that and makes him see himself how she sees him.
It's such a beautiful story of his growth and acceptance, and done in such a short story, it truly is incredible. Dakota's writing is always full of laughs and love, but her ability to write so much in so little will always amaze me.

Y'all know after I read ROMANCED BY THE RAT by G.M. Fairy that I had to continue this series, and BREAD BY THE GRIM by Dakota Cockaday did not disappoint! This lovable installment to the series was something I devoured in less than an hour and was a perfect read for all the girls who love an awkward monster and his protective girl!

The story follows Grim, who needs a pastry chef after Beatrice, his original, sasquatch chef suffers an injury (I'm honestly surprised nobody mentioned suing for workplace injury, but Bea was very close to Grim, but now I realize that would have been an interesting twist 😂) Bea suggests her replacement to be Phil, her cousin's kid, and Grim agrees because of his trust for Bea. However, he doesn't expect Phil to be a human, much less a woman, and Grim's inner beast comes alive for our Phillipa as they work to continue the legacy of the bakery!

I'll be honest, Cockaday also had me confused when I saw that the love-interest's name was Phil. I had to go back and be like, "Wait, did I pick up an MM book?" Don't get me wrong, I love me a good MM, but I could have sworn I saw female pronouns, so it definitely threw me for a loop 😂

Phil is one of my favorite FMC's. She's a recent college grad who's determined to make a name for herself with her grumpy cat Doux. She's honest, brave, and she doesn't back down when it comes to protecting her man 🥰I loved Phil's confidence in her art and her banter with Grim. When it came to their intimate, spicy scenes, Phil wasn't afraid to ask for Grim and reveled in his monster side. What I loved the absolute most about Phil was her care for Grim. Even when he pushed her away, afraid that his inner gremlin would take over, she persevered, still coming to his side and taking care of him. Also, she had depth! She was an incredible pastry chef and that mini plotline about her wedding cake mastery was done well. I enjoyed seeing her stand up for her work and for Grim, and I liked that there was more to her than just being a replacement for Bea.

Grim was a lovable, sweetheart of an MMC. He lived with control and was used to being poked, prodded, feared and disliked. His inner-gremlin is a medical condition in Ghostlight Falls, so yay for disability rep! Even if it's not a real thing, the notion that doctors are often unsure about characteristics that they can't explain is a good allegory to the need to continue medical research.

An introvert who thrives on order, Grim was a sweetheart who came to love Phil just as much as she loved him. His concern for her wellbeing was admirable, and his desire for her was intense yet sprinkled with the sweetness of not wanting to hurt her. Grim clearly knows that he packs all the goods, but he makes it clear that it's only for Phil. And by the Gods, when he said he wanted to see her with his child 🥵Cockaday wasn't lying with her title.

When it comes to the story, I loved the cozy aspect because we saw more of the characters developing together, and there was a plot to that! The mystery behind Grim's shifts, I feel, didn't need to have that extra layer of Lieutenant Arnold as an antagonist, because I feel like that part of the story didn't have a decisive ending; there wasn't any smackdown between them so that I could feel that their animosity had ended. However, I do like that we got closure on the reason behind Grim's shifts, and I loved how Phil would bring him food and slowly brought him out of the closet so he'd feel less like a monster!

I gotta give credit where credit is due to Cockaday's spice scenes because that forest scene 🔥🔥🔥Literally just mind-blowing and hot; how Grim pins her to the tree, how she takes him in her mouth - we love a man who whimpers. When they both finally give into temptation after seeing Arnold again and he and Grim getting into a confrontation? 🥰🥵And then when Grim finally kn0tted her I was on cloud nine; it was so titillating and exciting. They definitely put the 'bread' somewhere if you catch my drift 😂more like a long baguette. Grim's heat is defintiely something that I know he and Phil will look forward to. It was plot twist I didn't see coming...😂I'll stop now

This is just a me thing, but I kind of wish we saw their babies, because I'm curious how they'd look like, if they'd be part gremlin, etc, but I also like that Cockaday wrote the br33ding kink with the implication of future pregnancy, but not at the very instant because they both had plans for the bakery they wanted to accomplish first.

Oh, I almost forgot about our cute animal pals! Doux brought the lazy sarcasm and boredness of literally every cat I've met 😂I could tell he could care less about poor Grim, though Grim didn't seem to mind him. Then there was Charlie, whom I kind of wish we saw more of because according to Kaz, the pet shop owner, he sure seemed like just as much of a handful as Doux 🥲There was even a picture of Charlie, the guinea pig, included in the book! A 'lupis', he was called, and it was explained to be a guinea pig with wolfish features, which is exactly as adorable and fluffy as it sounds 🥰

Overall, I love everything about Ghostlight Falls! If you're a monster lover and you enjoy a quick bite of spice, heart, accepting yourself with a monstrous twist, then BREAD BY THE GRIM is for you!

This was my first book by Dakota Cockaday and my first time visiting Ghostlight Falls! And…well, what I wouldn’t do to transport myself to Ghostlight Falls as a new pastry chef only to find myself bonded to my boss Grim — a unique shifter with a secret monstrous form he’s named his Gremlin.

Yup, by day, Grim is a mild-mannered monster making delicious fresh bread for his bakery-cafe…but after midnight? Well, he’s something else entirely, and that something is unpredictable and needs to be contained (like Houdini-locked-away in a closet since he likes to hiss and might rip the doors off its hinges 🤷🏽‍♀️).

When Grim’s early morning employee has an accident, he’s forced to hire someone new and she just so happens to be the woman of his dreams. The more time Grim is around his new-hire, Phillipa, the more he begins losing his grip on his carefully crafted control…

Will Grim be able to keep his monster at bay, or will his monster take over and ruin things with the woman of his dreams before they can even begin?

Listen, if I was Phillipa? I’d be in the same boat. Meeting my boss without his shirt on and you bet I’m eyeing up those long, lean muscles. And don’t even get me started on the fact that he smells like fresh bread…that would make me want to be bred too 😂 (like eventually, maybe not right away, but let me have that insta-love moment). The longing and pining between these two led to sexual frustration and some 💦 💦 dreams for one of the two (I won’t out who lol), but I was here for it! Phil and Grim were such a sweet couple, even with that monster br33d!ng k*nk coming out to play 👀, and the acceptance they found in each other was heartwarming!

I want to go back to Ghostlight Falls asap!

One thing I love about Dakota's work is it short, but there's still a great amount of story. This was fun and lighthearted. I think the handling of consent was done fairly well.

As a person with chronic illness living in the US and dealing with the hellscape that is the medical system I did find myself very frustrated with the EMS people in the first chapter. When Bernice just let out a sort of maniacal laugh during the call with the operator asking questions that do not matter and then the responders not listening to the details that do matter. Sometimes all you can do is laugh or you're gonna lose your mind (which Grim does and I l9ve him for it).

Something that took an almost embarrassing amount of time to click for me is Grim is a humanised Gremlin like from the Gremlins movie. I loved Gremlins as a kid, but I have a sister who was terrified that a gremlin was going to come out of the toilet and eat her (she was 3). Naturally I have sent her the cover of this because why not.

In regards to the spicy romance aspect: this book may be short, but the characters have their hands all over each other once they give in to their feelings. They really are each others person

This was absolutely adorable! This is the second in the Ghostlight Falls series that I’ve read, and I’m falling more and more in love with this town with each book. It’s so cool to experience the town through different author’s minds and voices.

Grim tries not to let people get too close. The last thing he needs is for people to know the secret he hides nightly. But when his employee decides to retire, he is forced to open up to a pretty young baker. Unfortunately, Grim and his new employee can’t seem to stay away from each other…or keep their hands off each other. Will Grim be able to hide the urges he’s worked so hard to control? And could Phil ever love him if she knew the truth?

Bread By The Grim is so cute. Our mmc is the PERFECT Jekyll & Hyde as sweet and gentlemanly Grim and then his feral gremlin counterpart. This story was ridiculously sexy, and gave me the strongest urge to watch Gremlins, but anyway…my favorite part was just how adorably sweet and wholesome it is. This had telltale signs of a cozy romance: a small town, self-conscious baker falling for the sunshine new girl in town. Adorable furry guinea pigs. A town full of quirky shops and neighbors.

I was NOT expecting to be so invested in these characters. I need more Grim and Phil asap. 5 stars cause I totally forgot what I was reading wasn’t a Hallmark movie romance until I got to the copious amounts of bodily fluids.

Grim, a mild-mannered baker, has been hiding his gremlin from the world for as long as he can. But then Phil turns up as his new pastry chef and he is instantly drawn to her. Phil wants to support Grim anyway she can - even if that means a bit (or a lot!) of breeding.

Grim is such a beautiful soul and his struggle with his monster side is relatable and endearing. Phil balances out his introvert tendencies with her high energy. This is a cozy, finding yourself and your person story with a good amount of spice!
The writing style drew me in right away, establishing the caring nature of the characters, even the side characters have a lot of heart in this story.

The cute pets are such an added bonus in Bread By The Grim! They also help move the story along!

This is a boss x employee romance with just the right level of smut. Grim and Phil have it bad for each other from the start, their fast paced romance is cute and sweet though.

Fans of cute monster romance with a side of finding your true self will love this book. The setting of Ghostlight Falls adds cozy fall vibes too!

How Author Dakota Cockaday was like let's take an iconic movie character and make him slightly less terrifying but also completely irresistible is beyond me!
But when I tell you that I am so grateful she did!
This unique spin... I absolutely loved it!
The MMC, Grim will have you immediately in love with him! Even though he comes off a little broody, in reality he's so kind and worries about everyone else above himself. Even when it may not quite appear that way.
Insert the FMC, who is a little quirky and a whole lot passionate about her job... or maybe her boss? Either way she's the perfect fit for this small not-so-sleepy town's bakery.
These two have instant chemistry and the tension is incredible!
But holy smokes when they finally give into each other... it's hotter than a baker's oven!( you see what I did there lol)
Despite the scorching heat between these two there is also so much sweetness!
You'll be swooning and fanning yourself all at the same time!

Only in Ghostlight Falls could your small-town baker turn into a feral gremlin after dark and still manage to be the sweetest love story in town.

This story nails the Hallmark movie but make it paranormal smutty vibe. Between the incompetent firemen, lupig antics, and a grandma Sasquatch matchmaker, the town of Ghostlight Falls feels like a character all on its own. It's quirky, cozy, and the perfect backdrop for a Jekyll-and-Hyde style love story. And when the spice arrives, it doesn’t hold back. It’s playful, it’s hot, and it’s tied directly to Grim’s journey of acceptance.

Grim just wants to run his bakery in peace, but hiding his monster side is exhausting. Enter Phil, the new morning baker who crashes into his carefully controlled life and refuses to let him shrink away from who he really is. Their chemistry is instant, the kind that makes you grin because you know they’re doomed to fall fast and hard.

I loved how this story balanced sweet awkwardness with unapologetic heat. Grim’s struggle to embrace both sides of himself felt surprisingly tender, while Phil’s sunshine energy kept things light and fun. Add in the bakery setting and the nostalgic Gremlins nod, and you’ve got a bite-sized paranormal romance that’s way too satisfying to put down.

Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book.

I just comprehended the title after reading the book. 🫣 *ensue laughter of shame 🫠 *

Anywhose, another installment into the world of ghostlight falls. Love getting to see the bigger picture of the town. Even got a little sneak peak of Ruff n Tumble and cutie Kaz.

Grim is a very unique species that we know little about. He is scared of what he calls his gremlin side. Due to some unfortunate events, he is in desperate need of help at the Bakery. Little bit of luck and manipulation drops Phil into Grim's life.

Phil is EVERYTHING. Love her so much. She is animal loving and so patient. Those two together was *phew*. Let's just say some health code violations took place. And Poor Doux! The pets are having a common theme in this little town 😆

This is kinda like Cinderella and Beauty & the Beast messed around with some Gremlins to produce this story.

Bread by the Grim is such a delightful surprise! Dakota Cockaday has managed to perfectly blend cozy small-town charm with just the right amount of paranormal steam. Grim is the kind of awkward, broody guy you can’t help but adore, and the bakery setting in Ghostlight Falls adds so much warmth and whimsy. I loved the balance of sweet Hallmark-style romance during the day and the darker, steamier edge that comes out after midnight—it made for a completely unique and addictive read.

The insta-love felt genuine and fun, and the chemistry between the leads jumps right off the page. It’s romantic, quirky, a little spicy, and completely heart-melting. If you love small-town romances with a paranormal twist (and a guy you’ll want to both hug and swoon over), this novella is an absolute must-read.

ARC reader for “Bread by the Grim” by Dakota Cockaday and as a fun paranormal romance read I give it 5/5 ⭐️.

Bread by the Grim is a story from the shared world of The Ghostlight Falls Series. The more you read the stories, the more drawn into the town you become.

This story follows MMC Grim (a gremlin) who needs a replacement baker at his shop and hires our FMC Phil who also (due to smile worthy circumstances) winds up living in the basement of the bakery.
This novella has all the feels, with story line, laughs, spice and leaves you wanting more of their story.

What kind of story is this? This isn’t one to take too seriously, it is a paranormal romance. Think Gremlins meets Halloweentown (like the town inhabitants) mixed with some serious spice.

Phil shows up with her cat Deux. Grim is shocked when he meets her. More so when he learns Bernice lined up for Phil to live at the bakery. The minute he sees and smells Phil he is very attracted to her! Meanwhile Phil is extremely attracted to Grim too! It seems Bernice and fate planned for the two to meet. Grim needs a new baker. His old one has retired but she suggests her cousin, Phillipa. Grim and Phil may share a tiny spark, but it grows quickly when Phil literally falls in Grim's arms.

"She smells like sugar cookies with extra vanilla"

Grim is afraid to hurt Phil as she is a human and he is a gremlin. Yet, Phil is not afraid of Grim and even helps him control his shifting.

"I care about you Grim. All of you. In all your forms."

Grim and Phil were all hot and heavy. All Grim wanted to do is bred Phil. It is always a steamy time when the act is being performed. Grim is my first gremlin monster that I have fallen for. I now need to go on the hunt for more gremlin romances. Dakota baked up a steamy read!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I gave Bread by the Grim by Dakota Cockaday five stars! This is a simple, cute story that works perfectly as an enjoyable palate cleanser between heavier, darker books.

The narrative is tightly focused, centered entirely on the protagonist, Grim, and his personal anxieties and hang-ups. The book doesn't waste time on complex world-building, instead prioritizing Grim's journey of self-acceptance.

This journey begins when Grim meets Phil (a woman, though I initially thought she was a guy!). Phil's unconditional acceptance of Grim flaws and all acts as the catalyst. By receiving her grace, Grim begins to let go of his own issues and accept himself. This is a short, heartwarming romance.

What can I say about this fun little novella? It was a little slow in the spice department but then it got there and finished the job. Multiple times. I always love Dakota's use of funny sidekick animals along with her ridiculous one liners. This book definitely has all of the trademarks that make her a fun author to read. I was more than a little worried about the author's note at the beginning about non/dubious consent but honestly, I don't think it was an issue. I'm very sensitive to that and I didn't see a problem, but I'm thankful she took the time to warn her readers. Fun and quick book.

This was so cute and fun! It’s a short novella. But it really packs a punch. I feel like it did such a good job of making you connect with the characters. And their relationship was quick but also genuine.

Grom shifts into his “gremlin” form and worries for Phil’s safety. She is drawn to him and knows that he wouldn’t hurt her. But tries to respect his boundaries. Until a change of circumstance forces some change.

And then the spice really ramps up. And it’s good. And fun. And witty. Solid banter. And the epilogue wrapped the story so nicely. I enjoyed every page.

I received an ARC for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review.

He’s a green furred bakery owner who sometimes changes into a muscled lizard man, enslaved to his baser instincts; she’s a recent culinary school graduate, a human raised alongside Sasquatch relatives. Their chemistry is undeniable, and his mating urges are getting hard to ignore!

Such an adorably sweet and spicy addition to the Ghostlight Falls world! I loved the story of Grim and Phil. I have never seen a mating rut handled so sensitively and with so much consideration for consent. And that scene where he’s perched on the ceiling in his changed form? Yes, please, bend her over the bakery case!

This was a wonderfully written short book that could have been a full length novel with how easily the story flowed and the character enjoyment that was part of it. The author did a great job giving a character background without a ton of detail but it was exactly enough to make you feel like you knew everyone.

This story follows the main character Grim who is navigating life with what he considers to be a “dangerous” side of himself. He deals with his daily life owning a bakery, having his main helper get hurt and have to quit, finding replacement help and all the things in between. Will he find help? Will he find love? The fun story will keep you intrigued the whole time!
