Diego Wilde wants nothing to do with romance. He’s experienced enough heartbreak for a lifetime.

Summer rolls around and brings the XTREME 2004 tour with it. This tour involves a bunch of bands traveling across America to play all over the country. Not only is it a decent distraction from his breakup, but it’s a great way to gain exposure for his band, Vintage Misery. At least that’s how his bandmates sell the idea to him. Diego is less than enthused but ultimately agrees. It beats moping around.

While they’re on the road, Diego steps into a bar in Ohio. There, he meets a guy he deems Mr. Afterlife and the two of them hit it off. Diego is enjoying himself until he realizes they’ll never meet again.

Or so he thinks…

What happens when he sees someone who looks awfully similar to Mr. Afterlife playing on stage at XTREME? He worries he’s losing it. But if he’s not and it’s really the same person, then that means they’ll be spending a lot more time together than originally anticipated.

I can’t believe that nobody’s reviewed this book yet, so allow me to be the first, because it was so freaking good. The vibes were on point. I loved that despite being a romance novel, the setting is as un-romantic as possible, that being a run-down tour bus forever on the verge of breaking down (And it does break down a few times), which is occupied by Vintage Misery, an indie punk rock band going on tour and playing at crappy venues at their own expense in the hopes of being discovered. Oh, and the year is 2004, and there are hundreds of other bands doing the exact same thing. Vintage Misery don’t have much of a chance of standing out, and neither do Romeo’s Dagger, one of the bands on tour with them. Still, with nothing but their fragile dreams, bassist Diego reluctantly tours with the rest of his band across America—And falls in love with Ashton, the bassist of Romeo’s Dagger.

I really appreciated the pacing of Diego and Ashton’s romance. When they first meet, they’re instantly attracted to one another, but it’s absolutely not a case of insta-love. There’s also not much spice in the book, which, as someone who HATES hyper sexualised m/m romances, I really appreciated. There’s much more focus on Diego and Ashton getting to know each other and spending time together than there is on anything sexual. The ending…Agh! Frustrating, and it made my heart hurt, but in the best way. I know I’ll definitely be reading 93 Million Miles Apart, the next book in the Eternal Summer series. I can’t wait to read the next chapter of Diego and Ashton’s story (AndfinallyhaveDiegospitoutwhathewantedtotellAshton) Wait, who said that? Rambling over, Into Your Orbit is criminally underrated, and you should totally read it if you want a gay romance with a side of 2000s nostalgia ^_^

This was such a sweet book, and a wonderful start to the trilogy! It really was filled with THE MOST tooth-rotting fluff, these boys are head over heels for each other. It's told in a singular POV: Diego's. And Diego is a wonderful protagonist, with his own worries of never finding love and hurt from a past relationship and substance abuse. But one chance encounter on tour changes everything, and he's living life to the fullest in a way he never has before.

His blossoming relationship with Ashton was so gosh darn sweet to read. These boys are just always lovey-dovey with each other!! Match made in heaven, really 💕 But this is just the beginning of their story, and unfortunately the XTREME tour they're on must come to an end. We'll see more of them in book 2, and I'm eager to see where else this story takes me~ 💕

Can I also just say the author's writing style is absolutely gorgeous?? The prose is so beautiful, so crisp and clean and the descriptions of the setting and scenery really do put you right where they are. A grungy 2004 tour bus, the hot beaches and parking lots of their tour venues, it's all so good!! Loved this book 💕

This book was everything I had hoped for it to be: unpredictable, painfully real at times, and the type of romance that will have you blushing and kicking your feet. Like many of us who were kids raised on music, especially the iconic rock scene that burst from the early 2000s, Vintage Misery and Romeo’s Dagger are vivid, realistic characters whose struggles and triumphs can be felt as they’re both just hoping to make their dreams last beyond this one tour.
As for Diego, he’s a beautifully written protagonist. I want to grab him by the shoulders and shake him at times while reading, which is exactly what makes him so fun to read!! It was such a gut punch that he wasn’t able to confess his feelings to Ashton at the end of the book, but I adore stories that don’t wrap up in a neat little bow at the end— it makes it more real. The ending kept me hanging on, desperate to read more, and now I’m absolutely devouring the second book in this series.
I wish I could rewind and read this book for the first time again- but I’ll be looking forward to every word in the rest of the series.

If I could give this book more than 5⭐️ I would! “Into Your Orbit” has got to be one of the best books I’ve read this year (which says a lot because I’m already 17 books deep!) and it’s just so criminally underrated!

But, let me set the scene:

The setting of the story is in the sweltering hot summer of ‘04 where an indie rock tour is traveling through North America with a bunch of bands hoping to “make it big”. We follow Diego Wilde, bassist of Vintage Misery, as he navigates tour life (busted tour bus, broken a/c, public showers and all) until he has a chance encounter with a certain bassist of Romeo’s Dagger…

I won’t say anymore, but the way Ryan Markowski wrote this story really transports you to being on tour with these guys who end up feeling like they’re your friends (I love Miles, Ryan, I really do) The nostalgia made me listen to old alternative rock music I used to listen as a kid, and made my inner child soar!

I seriously think “Into Your Orbit” altered my brain chemistry, and I am just charmed by Diego and Ashton’s romance. I do love a chance encounter between strangers who end up being obsessed with each other (not in the dark romance-y kinda way) … like I can’t even tell you how hard I was grinning while reading scenes with these two! I’m just rooting for them and will wait for “93 Million Miles Apart” patiently! 🙏🏼

(oh, how I would throw down money for some Vintage Misery merch, btw!)

I’m not much of a review guy. Or as good with words as I used to be. And maybe I’m a little biased. But this was really sweet.

I was a teenager during the year this book is set (2004) and a typical teenybopper fan of music and bands. I loved following my favorite pop punk emo bands and loved getting glimpses of their live journals and their video diaries that would give us a small look into their world.

This book reads like going back in time and getting to take a peek into a summer tour of up and coming bands. It’s sweet. It’s gay. It’s lovely. It has a lot of moments that just really hit me I donno. The 7/11 game absolutely feels like something I would have watched on a video diary posted to YouTube in 2006 or something or released on DVD (à la simple plan). Watching my favorite band guys be total goofs.

Diego is a sweetheart that’s been broken before and letting himself love again. Him and Ashton are just…so sweet. I really liked this. Can’t wait to read more.

Also? Ending it on that text message pained me! Thanks!
