In the fractured kingdom of Oz, "goodness" is an illusion, power belongs to the persuasive, and one choice can shape a destiny. Born into privilege but tainted by scandal, Glinda Fairmoor's life changes forever when she defies tradition by choosing a forbidden Pink gem at her Moonshine Coronation––the same once chosen by Seraphina, the Forsaken Witch of legend.
Branded an outcast, Glinda navigates the brutal world of SilverCrest Academy, forging an unlikely bond with Ominson and a tense sisterhood with Gisella, the prophesied saviour of Oz. But behind Oz's shimmering facade lies a darker her father, Dainhurst, leads a campaign to destroy magic under the guise of prophecy.
Forced into uneasy alliance with the manipulative Wizard of Oz, Glinda is drawn into a web of lies, betrayal, and loss––including the transformation of her closest friend, Zelphira, into the Wicked Witch of the West. As Dorothy Gale's arrival threatens to unravel everything, Glinda must confront her complicity and reclaim her stolen power.
The GOOD Witch is a powerful reimagining of Oz––where legends are shaped by survivors, and the price of legacy is never paid in gold.
Glinda is a story about two misunderstood women, and about the choices they make to survive. The story is heartbreaking and, at the same time, heartwarming. It is about courage, vulnerability, betrayal, kindness, power, and love. There are heroes and villains, many twists and turns along the way, making it an enjoyable read. Readers of fantasy will love Glinda. This book has detail and background to fully immerse yourself in the story about Glinda, her family, her friendships, her loves, and her journey and transformation to her final destination. I think you will love this story. I know I did.
Glinda the Good Witch by R.W. Adams is a magnificent retelling of Glinda and her origin story. We are quickly made to understand the significance of politics and the perception of the people, both which can be easily twisted in the hands of the wrong people. Often the characters that are supposed to be good, are actually quite selfish and rotten, but they maintain their positive image with the people. And those that are truly good are downcast and trodden. Glinda starts off as the latter until she finally transforms into someone the people can believe in because of her new found beauty. But when the ugly green Zelphira enters the scene, people so easily cast her as a terrible person and eventually as the Wicked Witch of the West. But she has more patience and self-restraint than most any other person would have in her place.
The bond that is eventually built between the two girls, Glinda and Zelphira, is heartfelt and beautiful, but also tragic. And the hardships they face seem unbearable. The end of the book will leave you wanting to know more and I can’t wait to read what happens next.
I am such a fan of this book. It’s beautiful, intelligent, and funny all at the same time. I never ever thought I’d buy a Glinda book but here we are, because I thought wizard of oz type books were childish even when not meaning to, however, this isn’t for children. The progression of the story didn’t bore me like I thought it would when I got the book in hand and felt how hefty it was, and I must say that Glinda is now my favourite character in Oz behind the wicked witch obviously. I’m not a crier but I did feel some tears trying to slip, ugh just so beautiful and COHESIVE! Finally!
My only gripe is that I think the author should learn to cut it certain parts which I think wobbled the pacing, but not bad for a debut novel.
I want to re read it again just to see if I pickup on clues in the text now that I know what happens, and I also share the same sentiment of other readers I too will keep an eye out for more books from this author.
Most of the time you see a retelling or alternate universe story of a classic, the first thing that comes to mind is that it's never going to be true enough to its base, and at the same time never different enough to be a truly unique story. This book doesn't fall for either of those traps, and right away the complicated and tenuous relationship with her parents pulls you out of the Oz you know, and into this story that could stand up on it's own two legs. I'm a fan of the author's writing style, it's poetic and strong, and without giving anything away, I'm a big fan of Glenda's unique storyline/development. The book is accented with little details like a map that further help you dig into her writing, and show a sense of care taken during the writing process. Overall, if you're a fan of the wizard of Oz, wicked, or fantasy with a complex female lead, this is worth your time in my opinion.
I could not get into it. It reads and looks as if it were created by ChatGTP, with some of the names changed around so the author won’t get sued by the Maguire estate over copyright. Odd that they kept the name Galinda though, which very much is owned by Gregory Maguire and Wicked.
Should have stayed as poorly written fanfic, instead of trying to make money off of it. A slap in the face to the franchise as a whole.
An impressive read - this book reminds me of the hit "Wicked" in some ways - though, it might just be genre. I sincerely enjoyed the read. Some parts COULD have been better - but impressive! All in all, it's a solid 4 for me.
Where do i begin! If i am honest, this book found me at the right time. I recently decided to get more into fantasy (i'm a thriller maniac) and i happened to see a video about this book. i loved the Wicked movie so i gave it a shot and boy oh boy am i glad i did. This novel took me on a rollercoaster, even though it's quite long, the pages flew by. i was reading certain parts and thought to myself "is this detail necessary, surely you could've cut that out for pacing sake." but i was mistaken because those "details" ended up having layered meanings as you read along. Glinda's arc in this story made me cry real tears. Even her sister Gisella's story as a side character was very developed and made me shed a tear for her. the wicked witch in this story is magnificent, and i feel the author hinted at her own tale, so i hope they follow through with it because i would love to see her in her own tale and fill the gaps they couldn't because of it being Glinda's origin. There is something that happened in this novel that i feel no one is ready for, towards the end. never been done, but i wont spoil it for you, because i had to re read it over and over again just to make sure i wasn't imaging the words. WOW. There are many things that make this story rich, we understand how Dorothy comes to oz, the reason why the wicked witch hates dorothy, the reason Glinda is always wearing pink, and the reason why the wicked witch cannot kill the wizard(it's not what you think it is). i cried so much for glinda but i also laughed. alot. this author knows humour. "somewhere over the rainbow" is given a new meaning with a character named Orryn. and yes i cried at that part too. i know, i'm a big baby. i could go on and on about why i love this novel so much. READ IT! you will love it. This made me more into fantasy and i am looking forward to reading more in the genre.
