ARC Review of Baking up a Murder.

Firstly I would like to say thank you to Netgallery and the author for giving me a copy of this book for a honest review. This is the first time I am reading Hattie Fox’s novels and I will say I really enjoyed it and love their style of writing.

It’s what I would best describe as a cozy murder mystery novel meets cooking.

We meet our FMC, Madeline and her Grandma Ruth, who is pretty hilarious. She is rather unapologetically blunt, loud and I think she is great. They have such a good banter and chemistry between them and I am often cackling. I won’t spoil too much but certain events lead Ruth to become a murder suspect and it’s down to Madeline to prove her innocence.

The book has a nice balance with plot and character development and it definitely makes me want to read more murder mysteries like this one! It sort of gives hallmark mysteries/ miss marple vibes, which I love. I would recommended this book, especially if you like cozy murder mysteries.

Review of advance copy received from Netgalley

Rating: 2.5

I'm a sucker for a cozy mystery set in a bakery. This debut novel by Hattie Fox appeared to have all the elements I enjoy when reading a cozy mystery. As the book progressed, however, it started to lose its charm. I felt that the author threw out too many commonly used tropes and it lost its way. I do think Hattie Fox has potential to write some good cozy mysteries in the future, but this one missed the mark for me overall. I'd still try a book by her in the future to see if she's made progress in her writing.

Thank you to Crooked Lane and Netgalley for a copy in exchange for review consideration.
