This is a sexy, quick read with an unusual shapeshifter. Bears, wolves, lions, hell, even dragon shifters I've read before but never an octopus. That's definitely new to me, and Lairis did a great job, in a few pages, to build up the erotic connection between Rochelle and James. I'll definitely purchase the other parts of this story.

This is not your usual run of the mill erotica. The characters are well-rounded and real. The conversations and thought processes of the characters are relatable and ring true.

Chelle is one of those characters in struggle with herself. The trilogy (yes there are three books) take you on a journey of her self-discovery and how she settles into who she is and what she wants.

Oh, and by the way, the sex is pretty hot too. If you're looking for the simple "hey, you, you look good, let's get it on", look elsewhere.

Challenging the Dark: Part One was the first book/story I have read by Mya Liaris. I usually do not read books/stories of paranormal nature. However, I decided to give this a chance after being gifted a copy. This book exceeded my expectations and apprehensions. Although, it is a short read the author picked the perfect place to have it end which makes you want to read part two and even part three to see how it ends. I am a reader that also enjoys when a story has minimal editing errors. It shows me you take pride in presenting your best work to loyal and potential readers. In my opinion, the author demonstrated this well.

Rochelle “Chelle” (Ms. Dominant): the “Alpha” personality in this story. She knows what she wants and uses her need for control to get it. The power of her control is heightened when Omroku does not run away from her when she shows some of her personality. She becomes more attracted to him because of being use to others wanting to take that “control” from her. That does not appear to be what he is after… or is he?

Omroku (Mr. Debonair): He comes off as the smooth talker that doesn’t mind an “Alpha” personality type woman. He is even willing to take a slight backseat to let Chelle have her way, eventually leading to getting what he wants her to be his. He sees that she doesn’t run when she witnesses who he turns into which I think makes him want her more. He claims he doesn’t want her to change her ways, but I’m anxious to see if his motive is to soften her strong personality or if he wants her the way she is?

Overall, I was pleased with this story and will be reading the other parts and more of this author’s work in the future. She has truly peaked my interest in this genre.

I love a strong female character who embraces her sexuality and is unapologetic about her desires. Chelle is that character. She is also flawed and damaged, which makes her a much more developed heroine for me.

The hero is confident in his masculinity and willing to give Chelle the reins to their relationship--at least for a while. The attraction between them is palpable and (thankfully) displayed prior to the searing sex scenes.

This book is a refreshing take on the shapeshifter romance genre and I look forward to the continuation of Chelle's story.
