Rate this book
"I've already lived this horror."

Ever Tillman is no longer a mortal chasing vengeance. She's an Intrinsic. One of the Ten, gifted with magic and bound by duty to protect the North. But with new mentors and too much magic, her goal is slipping from her grasp.

Her magic marks her as a threat. Her resemblance to the Southern Queen makes her a target. Her feelings for Calyx could ruin everything. Despite the danger lurking in the shadows, Ever's still chasing justice for her brother... at any cost.

Fury. Desire. Vengeance.

Calyx Heartsworn was raised to serve the crown, but his loyalty lies with Ever. He'll break every rule and wear any mask to protect her, even if it means betraying the king.

Secrets are dangerous, and when the Ten investigate an attack at the western fort, the lies holding Parodyn together begin to unravel. With Ever in constant danger and a traitor among the Ten, Calyx struggles to keep his promise. If he can't... he risks losing more than just his title.

I didn’t plan to finish this book so fast, but once I started I just couldn’t stop. Every chapter felt intense and addictive, and it kept me awake way longer than I should admit. Ever came out even stronger this time, not just with her power but with her heart too, and I loved watching her grow into herself. Calyx was the kind of character who was mysteriors and fascinated me at the same time. Together they were explosive, and their chemistry was fire. The Ten felt like a real family, full of messy loyalty and support, and the side characters gave the story so much extra life. The pacing was sharp, the world kept expanding. The final part was shocking, and completely breathtaking. Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving an honest review.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ = 5 stars!

A Crown Cursed in Frost is the second book in the series, and I adored A Flame Forged in Mist so much I genuinely thought it couldn’t get any better. But oh, how wrong I was!

The story sweeps us straight back in, picking up right where the last book ended. Ever is now one of the Ten, an elite, magic-wielding unit tasked with infiltrating and dismantling the enemy forces in the South, a land ruled with an iron fist by Queen Sigrid. Before they can face that danger, however, the recruits must first endure intense and unforgiving training, particularly Ever, whose two streams of magic are both rare and extraordinarily powerful.

But training is perilous in its own right. With enemies lurking in every shadow, a King determined to see her dead, and a forbidden affair with the prince growing ever more dangerous, it feels inevitable that everything will eventually ignite. This instalment turns the heat up in every way, and the romance? Positively addictive. 🔥

The final quarter of this book is nothing short of breathtaking. Just when you find yourself settling into the rhythm of the training grounds, the stolen moments, and the tension of a possible traitor in their midst, you’re suddenly hurled into a storm of loss, fury, and unflinching brutality. Calyx, in particular, shines (and terrifies) here, his moral greyness coming into full, unapologetic force. I’d known from book one that he was violent and possessive, but here he proves it beyond doubt. Truly, do not mess with this man.

Ever’s growth in this instalment is remarkable. She’s determination to avenge her brother, while also coming to terms with the possibility that she may never achieve that revenge. Along the way, she grows stronger, deepens her understanding of her magic, and truly becomes one with it. By the end, she’s not just surviving, she’s owning her power and stepping into her true self. She’s such a complete badass, and I absolutely love her!

Samara has a gift for building you up to these monumental moments, then wrenches you through every emotion with merciless precision. She delivers her emotional blows with such vivid clarity that you can’t help but feel them as if they were happening to you. I absolutely DEVOURED the last few chapters. Brilliant!

What to Expect:
❄️ Forbidden Love
☀️ Morally Grey Characters
🍇 Banter
✨ Training & Mentors
❄️ Touch her & 💀
☀️ Dual POV (with a few extras)
🍇 Cranky Mentor
✨ Secrets & Betrayals
❄️ Medieval World
☀️ Found Family
🍇 Inherent Magic
✨ Spice

⚠️ Trigger/Content Warnings:
References to past trauma and abuse (including sexual abuse), violence and torture, mature language.

My only tiny quibble is the occasional rehashing of events when switching POVs from Ever to Calyx. While this was far less frequent here than in the first book, I did find myself skimming certain repeated dialogue to see what fresh insight his perspective might bring. These moments could have been trimmed a touch more, but honestly, it’s a small detail that didn’t pull me away from loving the story.

A huge thank you to Samara for letting me read the sequel early. I’m such a devoted fan, and I truly admire her writing. Congratulations on delivering such a spectacular second instalment, you’ve outdone yourself, Sam! ❤️❄️

This is the second book in this series and I loved every second of it!! I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and this one was even better, I even stayed up till silly hours of the morning to finish this as I was absolutely hooked and couldn't put it down.
I love Ever and Calyx soo much with their questionable morals but unwavering loyalty to those they love. As I said for the first book, I really love the magic system in this and the world-building is great. All the characters are so fleshed out and all their personalities work great together. I'm so invested in this world and all the characters and am so so excited for the next book ❤️

A Crown Cursed in Frost is such a beautifully layered story. It’s not just about mastering magic. It’s about love, loyalty, and the bonds that make us stronger. The romance with a very possessive MMC, is fiery and passionate, but what really stood out to me was the loyalty and love between friends. The found family element completely stole my heart, and the way this group sticks together through heartbreak and loss had me so invested.

The writing blends action, love, and emotional depth beautifully, leaving me hooked from start to finish.

A Crown Cursed in Frost is the second book after A Flame Forged in Mist by Samara Saward.

I was super excited to be back with Ever and Calyx. And it did not disappoint! The book is filled with action, battle scenes and the Ten becoming a true family as they navigate their new lives and their training together.

Samara has such a great writing style. I love how many details she gives us about the world and about the things that happen in general. You almost feel like a part of the group.

It’s wonderful to get to see these characters learn and develop the way they did. It’s not just solely about Ever or Calyx and I love that!

"𝐼'𝓂 𝒶 𝓈𝑒𝓁𝒻𝒾𝓈𝒽 𝓂𝒶𝓃, 𝐸𝓋𝑒𝓇. 𝐼 𝓂𝒶𝓀𝑒 𝓃𝑜 𝒶𝓅𝑜𝓁𝑜𝑔𝒾𝑒𝓈 𝒻𝑜𝓇 𝓅𝓇𝑜𝓉𝑒𝒸𝓉𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓌𝒽𝒶𝓉'𝓈 𝓂𝒾𝓃𝑒."

Where the romance between Ever and Calyx was a sloooow burn in book 1 (me likey!), it felt a bit fast in this one. On one hand completely normal because they’ve had their first moment in book 1 so why wait. But on the other hand, they went from one secret and passionate kiss to the whole shebang. And the way it was described as this more “primal” need than need for him, made me lose the romantic touch a little. Still: not complaining! And it also makes sense for the both of them. But the romantic soul in me wanted a little more.

I absolutely loved how the ending of book 1 comes back as a reference in this sequel. It’s all tied together in such a beautiful way.

I can’t wait for book 3. There are still so many questions left to be answered and I kinda love how some mysteries remain, even now.

"𝒮𝒽𝑒 𝒾𝓈 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝑒𝓎𝑒 𝑜𝒻 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓈𝓉𝑜𝓇𝓂, 𝓌𝒽𝑒𝓇𝑒 𝒸𝒶𝓁𝓂𝓃𝑒𝓈𝓈 𝒶𝓌𝒶𝒾𝓉𝓈. 𝐼 𝒶𝓂 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓇𝒶𝑔𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓌𝒾𝓃𝒹𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝓋𝒾𝑜𝓁𝑒𝓃𝒸𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝓈𝓅𝒾𝓇𝒶𝓁 𝒶𝓇𝑜𝓊𝓃𝒹 𝒽𝑒𝓇. 𝒯𝑜𝑔𝑒𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓇, 𝓌𝑒 𝒶𝓇𝑒 𝒹𝑒𝓈𝓉𝓇𝓊𝒸𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃."

Add this series to your tbr if you love:
✨magical trials

🫐rival kingdoms

Thank you so much Samara Saward for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

"She is the queen, the axis my world revolves around. She is my centre. Kneeling before her is a fucking blessing."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I'm am once again here to praise and thank Samara for this universe, this story, and the man that is Calyx.

The story picked up right where A Flame Forged in Mist left off; and Samara made it exceptionally easy to remember key components of the first instalment, while reminding us of plot points we might have needed a refresher on.

One thing Samara does in this series is let the reader see important scenes from multiple POVs.
Some scenes from Ever's perspective I would be saying "ugh! I wish I knew what Calyx was thinking during this!" and BAM! She hits me with a Calyx POV for exactly that.
You don't get that often, if at all, in a book - and it's one thing that really has Samara standing out from the rest.

I loved finally being able to see Calyx and Ever's relationship develop, even if they still had to sneak around to avoid the king et al.
I adore this man; his fierce protectiveness and possessiveness of Ever brings him so high up on my list of book boyfriends! 😍
Seeing Ever's relationship with herself blossom into something admirable was really lovely, and I really enjoyed seeing her find another family in the Ten.

"She is the eye of the storm, where calmness awaits. I am the raging winds of violence that spiral around her. Together, we are destruction."

Rogue, once again, brings me so much joy with his banter with Ever, while still maintaining so much loyalty to his Prince. His protection of Ever due to this is at an all time high, and I just want Dreadlocks to be happy, okay!?

"He loves you, Goldie. There’s nothing more dangerous than that. At least, not for him."

Just when I was 110% confident I knew how this was going to end; I was 110% wrong. I'm so invested in this story and finding out what happens next!

Thank you, Samara Saward, for the opportunity to read this eARC!

Loving A Flame Forged in Mist, I was really looking forward to this book and it did not disappoint! The story dives straight back in at a fast pace, With Ever now being a part of the Ten - an elite force created specifically to target the enemies in the South. We get a lot more foreshadowing and hints at the complex politics of this world in this book, and I absolutely loved it. Samara does a fantastic job of giving you just enough to let you theorise on whats coming up, bur still leaving enough mystery that you're dying to get your hands on the next book!!

I really enjoyed the training aspects in this story, especially learning more about the magic system. With Ever having the rarest kind of magic, she needs some intense training before she'll be ready to face their enemies and it was so interesting to read about how her magic reacts to her. But the training isn't the only thing Ever is dealing with - enemies are everywhere, the King wants her dead and she's falling head first for Calyx in a tense and forbidden romance. This book really built upon everything in book 1, and the TENSION in the romance was amazing.

I adore Ever. Her character development and growth in this book was fantastic. She really comes into her own, embracing her magic and becoming the powerful badass she was always meant to be. Ever is still determined to avenge her brother, but I think we start to see her living her own life and really enjoying it too (minus the danger surrounding her).

The final 25% of this book was phenomenal - I couldn't put it down! We're thrown into an intense battle filled with rage, grief and brutality. Calyx SHINES in this section, her is protective and terrifying and truly morally grey, and I adored seeing Ever make some of her own morally grey decisions. I am already super excited to see where this series goes next!

4.5 ⭐️

What can I say... Ever and Calyx's story continues in a way that's intense, forbidden, hot, and almost unhinged in places. It is enthralling.

The book picks up where the first left us (and if you've not seen or read book one yet - there is a review on my grid and I urge you to check it out!) Ever is now part of the Ten, an elite magic weilding squad tasked to infiltrate and take down their enemies in the South, which is under the rule of Queen Sigrid. But as raw and untested recruits, they need to train first - especially Ever, who weilds two incredibly powerful streams of magic. Training has its own perils, though, and with enemies all around Ever, a King who wants her dead and her forbidden affair with the Prince heating up - its a powder keg waiting to explode.

And boy, the last quarter of this book is powerful. Just when you start to find a rhythm with the training grounds, the stolen moments, the mystery surrounding a possible traitor, you're suddenly thrust into a conflict that steals your breath from loss, anger and sheer brutality.

Calyx is not someone you want to fuck around and find out with...

So if you love -

- forbidden love
- morally grey MMC and FMC
- touch her and die (literally)
- mentor/trainee
- threats against the Kingdom
- hidden betrayals
- coming into power FMC
- side characters you'll love

this book is for you! I read this one prior to the official publishing date.

5⭐️ A delicious romance between morally grey main characters who are both powerful, fierce and loyal with touch-her-and-die vibes done perfectly, this action packed second book was EVERYTHING I needed!

I loved A Flame forged in Mist but A Crown cursed in Frost was next level good. We enjoy the story told by both Callyx and Ever whose love for one another fuels their individual ferocity making them a formidable team against the growing threat of the south… and the uncertain intentions of their own Northern King.

As a second book we have time to delve deeply into the world and the magic system, which was written in a way that made it so easy to understand without any info dumping.

I thoroughly enjoyed the way that the story had layers, the training, the bonding as a unit, the romance and the threats. We witnessed the Ten train their magic and their fighting skills as we learnt all about their magic and that of their mentors. We watched as their training and the threats brought them closer together to create a cohesive and competent group. We are thrown into a passionate and protective romance between two complicated people. We puzzle out who all the threats are and where they come from. All with a whole cast of characters who I absolutely adored. I was engaged every step of the way making for some late nights reading when I couldn’t put this book down.

I don’t know how I can possibly wait for book 3… it will be torture. This book as amazing!

A Crown Cursed in Frost is an action-packed, emotionally rich sequel to A Flame Forged in Mist.

We journey with Ever and the Ten as they train, grow, and harness their power to protect the North. I loved watching the Ten form a true found family, bonding through their differences, learning to trust each other, and showing what teamwork can really look like.

Calyx, the Prince sworn to oversee their training, comes to realise that, despite his father the King’s beliefs, Ever is someone worth standing beside, no matter the cost. His devotion to Ever was powerful and deeply moving.

The ending was both just and heart-stopping! I especially loved seeing the Ten shine, and I was surprised by how much I came to adore Rogue, Calyx’s personal guard. His heart of gold and his simple but profound line, “What can I do for you, friend?”, stayed with me long after finishing. For the full impact, you’ll need to read this wonderful book yourself.

I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in this world, witnessing friendships deepen and love blossom throughout the story.

I received an ARC of this book, but all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own, and this review is shared voluntarily.

ARC Read (may contain spoilers)

OMFG MY HEART... my poor heart... not Joah... oh my, where do I begin... the continuance of AFFIM into ACCIF... i loved it! When the spice was there, it was spicy, the tension at the beginning, chef's kiss *muah*, but the heart break, the death... my heart cant take it... and come on now, Altair Fatedenier, was not fully expecting his entrance exactly when it happened, but good lord was I worried.

Still worried abt King Thornwatcher & his idiocies. Like man, come on, just warm up to Ever, you big dumb dumb! Leave her alone, let her be happy with Calyx, and stop giving her those death-glares!

Overall, this book was a fun and easy read, with some good banter & plot points! I loved the added romance, it went from a slow burn, to a crackling fire (theres a difference between this and a raging blaze), and even Erryn was getting some with Autry *cue hoots & hollers*! Get it girls! Love the pairings!

Lol can we also find lovers for Abrams & Shep, bc with their friendship, I feel like it'll be each other! (im jk... or am I?)

This was such an enjoyable book! We started off right where the last book left of which I love so much. We got to see Ever progress in her training, grow as a person, and get close with The Ten - which became a little family. There were a lot of betrayal, lies, scheming, and attacks. There were more moments between Ever and Calyx, both sweet and spicy, and incredibly protective (I'm still not completely sold on this romance, but honestly, this is definitely a me issue and no the book issue - we just have different preferences when it comes to romance and that's completely okay!)
The ending cliff-hanger had be gasping out loud, and I truly am so excited for book 3 and to learn answers to all the unanswered questions and events to come.
If you love fantasy, found family, and intense romance with a very overprotective MMC -this book is definitely for you.

The story of Ever and the Ten continues.

Dual POV between the two main characters shows the advancement of the romance blossoming. The FMC is shown to be more embracing of her character.

I enjoyed this, the world building and dialogue keeps you hooked. Another ending that keeps you guessing - what has happened to the eliminated contestants?

a few grammatical errors and there were two repeating scenes (Ever 'its been ages since I spent time with my second only friend'). And the gender of one character changed a couple times.
Should be ironed out before release date.

If reading were tracked like a workout on a tracker, this book is definitely a shift from Zone 1-2 to Zone 3-4. Just when i thought book 1 was easygoing, just to realize that that was just the warm up 😂. Book 2 ramps everything up: the plot, the stakes, the action, the romance, the spice, the emotions. I love how the author deepened the bond within the Ten and built even more chemistry and sparks between the main characters. At this point, I’m just bracing myself for whatever heart rate zone the author throws at us next. Absolutely crushed it!

Thank you for the ARC opportunity 🙌.

This follow-up to AFFIM was so good. I liked that there was more from Calyx's POV, although I did feel that it replayed things a bit too much for my liking, but it wasn't enough to make me change my opinion overall. There's just as much action and yearning in this book as the first, which I LOVED, and I loved how more fleshed out all of the characters became. Samara really built on the first book and did it well. This sequel was cohesive and easy to follow, and I loved seeing the relationship between Calyx and Ever transform. Looking forward to the next one!!

6 stars... 😱🤩 Samara Saward, you have outdone yourself! I thought I felt in touch with the characters in book 1, even more so now though! The way this was written made me feel like I was a member of the Ten, as though their problems were my problems. I cried, I celebrated, I mourned and I got angry alongside all of them. I have SO many questions and I absolutely cannot wait for book 3 to come out to join the gang again. And don't get me started on Mr heart throb Calyx 🥵🥵

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

We pick up right where we left off! Ever's heritage is revealed and Calyx vows to protect her from his father. Book 2 started off a little slow but about 25% in picked up quickly! More trainings, betrayals, and surprises come quickly. Ever and the Ten truly come into their own power and develop closer bonds. The end is filled with tragedy as well as a twist.

Oh my she does it again! Loved where this book started off again with the ten getting into their training & leaning into their magic! Loved the sound family aspect of this! Calyx & Ever’s relationship growing & getting stronger! But don’t be fooled there was still that fit to this book & don’t get attached to anyone, because they may not stay around long enough lol

A Crown Cursed in Frost is a strong continuation from A Flame Forged in Mist, pulling readers straight back into the North and the journey of the Ten. With magic, danger, and the shadow of betrayal, the story balances action with the deepening relationship between Ever and Calyx—complete with some spicy moments. Themes of loyalty, revenge, and family shine through, leading to an emotional ending that leaves you desperate for book three.

What secrets have been kept from the mortal, and why are the Mystics so hated?

The ending… I loved the book. It was just as good as the first one. The characters, the story line, the twist… I want to know how the story continues!
You could theoretically read it as a standalone but it is an amazing continuation of the first book and there will be scenes that will make more sense when you read the first book.

“My flames and I are fury incarnate. Through the night air is icy against my skin, all I can feel is the heat of my anger, and of my fire.”

I was lucky enough to ARC read once again for this amazing series, thanks to Samara Saward.

Ever Tillman, an Intrinsic mystic, is secure in her spot as a member of the ten after surviving the lethal trials. Her magic marked her as a threat to the king. Her looks made her a target. With the weight of the future of the North on her team's shoulders, Ever needs to navigate her training and the enemies she’s waited years to face.

Even after finishing this book, I found myself reaching for it, as I just didn’t want to let it go.

This book was far more exciting than the first one. The plot moved quickly, and there was a balance between training sessions and plot events. A warning, though, this book will rip your heart out! I have rarely been so mad to reach the end of a book.

Structurally, this book had a more dual perspective than the first one! While they did overlap like in book one, there were more chapters from either perspective, including one chapter not narrated by Ever or Calyx (I won’t say who, as not to spoil). It was interesting to see more of Calyx’s rage and devotion to Ever from his perspective as more than “bonus chapters” but ingrained into the storyline.

Once again, the cover art is beautiful and fits the story well. This whole series has some of my favourite art, and I loved the reveal of book 3 the other day.

A Crown Cursed in Frost is the follow-up book to A Flame Forged in Mist and boy, did I love this book! This book takes off exactly where the first book left off and we're immediately into a fairly fast-paced plot with action and conflict at every turn. This is exactly how I like my fantasy/romantasy books with lots of magic and intrigue. Samara's writing style and characterizations have grown immensely. I really enjoyed the pictures she was able to paint of her characters and the world she's built.
My only real issue is Calyx. While I would say the brooding, overprotective MMC is for a lot of readers, it's not necessarily for me. I found myself wanting to yell at him to just let Ever be an independent woman. Thankfully, Ever did her own thing, because she doesn't need no man telling her what to do! My sweet baby Rogue makes up for my Calyx frustration, and I am on my knees begging Samara for some more Rogue POVs because he is perfection.
This second book does not suffer from "book two in a trilogy" syndrome. With an engaging plotline, fabulous characters, and some plot twists that I did not see coming, this is definitely her best book so far, and I cannot wait for the next one!

Saward’s world is so magical that I was beyond excited to return to it, brave Ever and swoonworthy Calyx. A Crown Cursed in Frost picks up right where A Flame Forged in Mist left off, with Ever and the newly formed Ten - a powerful group of warriors with unique abilities - continuing their training all whilst evading the attacks of the South and unraveling the secrets of this kingdom torn apart. Ever and Calyx continue to yearn and pine in a diabolical fashion, both as unashamedly morally grey as the other, Roque continues to make me snort and hoot, and Erryn continues to serve as the warm centre of this group of fighters (with a hot older boyfriend!!). Saward pulled me in immediately and I had such a blast returning to her world and her characters. Her way of writing dual POVs continues to floor me every time, and that crackle of tension and passion between our FMC and MMC will forever bring me to my knees.
