Devastated by loss, Matthew sleepwalks through life, existing but not living. Can someone rescue him from his waking nightmare and help him to live again?
I’m not going to lie, I was crying during the first part of this story. The loss and hopelessness that comes with that level of pain was so real, so well depicted, I couldn’t stop the tears. As the two main characters befriend each other, we discover their lives in more detail, with a focus on Matthew and what it takes for him to deal with his loss.
The way Matthew ends up practically alone shows us just how quick people are to give up when they are dealing with something they do not understand, or don’t know how to make better. They tune it out and step back and just add up to the loneliness of the person suffering.
As the story evolved from pain to budding friendship to budding love, I couldn’t help having hope and warmth replace everything else. This is a read that yields strong emotions, but will still end up putting a big, bright smile on your face. Definitely a must read!
This is a book that deals with a lesser seen aspect in romance, the death of a loved one. I liked how the author really described and talked about not only the emotions you go through when dealing with a devastating loss, but also how she didn't rush the resolution. Matthew wasn't magically healed, it took time and effort. I also enjoyed how Matthew and Elliot's relationship slowly evolved and I loved the little details the author added, such as the visits to different art museums, which just added to the story for me. All in all, I greatly enjoyed this story, and I think the author did a great job writing about such a difficult topic.
