When I finally admit my attraction to men might be more than just curiosity, I start questioning everything about myself. I’d always been told I couldn’t be gay and play rugby, but my teammates are proof that isn’t true.
Now I’m fixated on all the filthy things Ezra, the Knights’ hot, older Head of Marketing, might do to me. Maybe I shouldn’t be flirting with him, but I’m too intrigued to stop. Ezra’s life is as messy as mine, however when he offers me a safe way to explore my feelings without judgement I can’t resist.
Neither of us is here for a relationship, and neither of us is ready for one… So why does Ezra make me feel things I’ve never experienced before?
Would it be wrong for me to fall for the man with the shattered heart?
Charlie lives in England with her husband and a dachshund named Biscuit. She spends most of her days wrangling other people’s words in her day job and then trying to force her own onto the page in the evening.
She loves cute stories with a healthy dollop of fluff, plenty of delicious sex, and happily ever afters – because the world needs more of them. Charlie also believes that love comes in all shapes and sizes.
Charlie has very little spare time, but what she does have she fills with cooking, pole-dancing, reading and ice-hockey. She also thinks that everyone should have at least one favourite dinosaur…
This book starts off with a really fast pace which perfectly gets across the exuberant personality of Danny. I love him and his mullet so much 😂
Ezra calling Danny 'puppy' was the most accurate pet name ever!!
I really enjoyed seeing Danny going through his self-discovery and figuring out what he wanted, who he is, and how to live his life authentically.
Ezra did make me giggle because he acts like he's SO old, but I'm his age and I don't feel old at all 😂 There was definitely potential for more drama and emotional turmoil, but Charlie kept the book low angst and focused more on the positive future rather than the negative past.
The wider team also feels more familiar now we're 4.5 books in, and I really like the friendship and family feel to their relationships.
I'm very much looking forward to the next book with Hunter, Bailey and Aiden too!
***** I received an ARC of this book from The Author Agency, and this is my honest review
This is another banging entry in her Lincoln Knights Rugby Union series and this time it's winger Danny, he of the mullet and dodgy moustache, that's up for consideration and a HEA!
And oh boy is our Danny a bit of a black horse. He's a youngster still trying to find his way, he's brain doesn't always engage before his mouth opens and we've seen him asking some very inappropriate questions of the queer members in his team.
However, it's all a façade for a 24-year-old who's questioning his own sexuality and who's grown up with a father who's reinforced homophobic stereotypes his whole life, so you can imagine his confusion.
When the book opens, we're met with Danny having already realised he's attracted to men, and Charlie navigates his journey into more self-discovery with humour and, for me, what makes up the heart of this book, incredible kindness.
Danny realises he's got a massive crush on the club's new Head of Marketing, Ezra, and decides he'll be the perfect person to help him experiment with his gay awakening.
Danny's also a total brat, with some compulsion issues and another newly discovered praise kink, so the older and somewhat jaded Ezra, who's going through a divorce with a dickhead of an ex, is reluctant at first to get involved.
But, it soon becomes clear that there's a genuine connection between them and Charlie then gives the reader one of the hottest relationships yet with plenty of mild kinky moments, a lot of incredible emotional feels, and a boatload of support in just the right moments.
I also loved that she addressed Danny's earlier vocal mishaps with both Mason and West, which took place back in West's book Drama Queen and had him facing that head on once he came out.
I also love that it was West who stood up for Danny and checked in on him before anyone on the team knew about him and Ezra.
Sweet, adorable, funny, sexy as hell, this book is fucking hot as!
Next up is going into MMM territory as we find out just what's been going on with Hunter, Bailey and Johnny's younger brother Aiden! I cannot wait.
#ARC kindly received from the author via The Author Agency, I am voluntarily leaving a review
4.25 stars. Well, that was a tantalizing, feel-good read, I enjoyed it!
After being cheated on by his husband, Ezra packed his things and left. Ezra is the Knights’ marketing and social media manager.
Danny is one of the Knights’ wingers, he discovered gay porn and now he wonders how it would feel to be with a guy. He even looks at guys differently. No one can know of course, for Danny, rugby and being gay aren’t compatible, even with gay players on his team.
When Danny saw Ezra he thought he was hot-as-fuck. Ezra recognized Danny at the bar, the younger guy was trying to cover that he was staring at him.
Danny is a brat, an eager, impatient, and joyful puppy, and he isn’t even aware of it. Ezra wants to praise and reprimand him deliciously, but he shouldn’t. He promised himself not to involve Danny in his messy life. Ha! as if he can resist him!
Danny wants to experiment sexually, especially with Ezra, who is older and experienced, all with no strings, no attachment. Ha! if it were that simple.
Before they know it they are heavily involved with each other.
“Yeah, I was definitely gay. Like super fucking gay.”
Danny has a horny one-way mind, and he’s bluntly open about it, so much fun! Luckily Ezra knows how to handle him. As I said a feel-good story, low angst, entertainingly written, just sexy fun with two lovable guys and joy with friends and rugby team mates! . . . . I received an arc
I think the fact that I’m giving this book 3 stars still even though it has so many of my icks in it really goes to show how much I do truly love this author.
My book icks that pop up in this book in no particular order: 1. Mullets 2. Moustaches 3. Age gaps 4. The pet name “puppy” 5. Grown adults who stick their tongues out at people.
Winger is the first book I’ve read by Charlie Novak. She’s attending Indie Love next year and I was curious about her books. This is a sports romance and a gay awakening.
Danny has split up with his misses and wants to try new things. He starts with a drink and then goes after the bigger things he wants. He has a new start and isn’t holding back.
Ezra works with Danny as a social media outlet. When he sees Danny take an interest in him he can’t resist showing his a new path.
Winger is spicy, horny and a happily ever after.
✅ Low angst ✅ a touch of sport ✅ M/M romance ✅ Spicy ✅ Workplace romance ✅ Standalone within a series
Audiobook read. Dan Calley reads Winger really well, but there was no difference in voice between each POV and it made it harder for me to settle into the two characters as distinct people. This is a gay awakening and Dan’s voice is a little ‘camp’, which is fine, but to me, it wasn’t as believable. An m/m romance is obviously going to end with a gay romance but I’d of liked a less predictable tone of voice.
This book can be read as a standalone, but as usual, for a better understanding I'd recommend to read the previous books, too.
Oh, this one was a lot of fun 🤭
Danny is a professional and succesful rugby player, and Ezra is an older, recently divorced marketing manager. So, pretty much different from one another, some might say 🙈
Who would have thought that the sassy Danny can be such a sweetheart? And a very needy one at that, too, whew 🫠
Ezra comes from an unpleasent and very toxic relationship, and Danny is honestly such a perfect fit for him. He is not the biggest grump, but there are definitely some grump/sunshiny vibes going on in here, too 🥰
These two once again prove that love can be found in the most unexpected ways 💞
Rating: 4.5 Steam: 3 PoV: dual, 1st person Genre: sport romance, MM Tropes / tags: age gap, found family, sexual discovery
This was such an adorable and sweet romance!
I simply adored Danny, he definitely had the whole golden retriever MC energy going on, and Ezra calling him puppy was spot on. He was a clueless, but very lovable character, and it was great seeing him finding his HEA with Ezra! They were perfect for each other - Ezra needed someone like Danny in his life after going through a bitter divorce, and Danny needed someone who could ground him.
It was so easy to fall for these two, and Danny being a brat and Ezra trying to be firm with him made me smile a lot. They were opposites in a lot of ways, and there was a bit of grumpy / sunshine vibes going on as well. I loved seeing Danny explore his sexuality and the initial tension between him and Ezra was hot. Their dynamic was fantastic, and I really enjoyed the light kink and what it added to their relationship.
The Winger was an entertaining and sweet read, and my heart melted a little every time Ezra called Danny 'puppy'. The found family vibes with the team was strong, and I can't wait to see what else Charlie Novak has in store for us!
- I received an advanced copy of this book, and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.
phewwww yall i think this is the spiciest book in Charlie Novak’s entire back catalogue 😮💨 ——
Full ARC review:
Y'all know I'm nothing if not a refined & distinguished book connoisseur and imo I think this is Charlie's spiciest book yet! And it's not just due to sheer number of spicy scenes, it's the whole vibe of the book- the tension, the nicknames, the open communication. Phew!
And I can't wait to relisten to it on audio (per usual!)
We have met our mulletted & mustachioed 24-year old rugby player Danny in the previous Lincoln Knights' books. Where we often saw him putting his foot in his mouth asking the other players questions about themselves & their relationships. Even though he had the best of intentions, his internal thoughts and feelings were hidden behind the facade he put on as the happy-go-lucky jokester, so his teammates never took him seriously.
Then we have Ezra, the 39-year old Head of Marketing for the team, who is starting over in a new city with a new job, after a devastating end to his marriage & the life/future he thought he would have. His self confidence is literally underground at the start of the book & yet he feels a connection to Danny that he simply can't ignore.
I'd also be remiss to not mention our glorious BFF side characters in this book, who were such a fantastic edition to the story. Charlie shows Danny that he will always have someone by his side no matter what, and Shane delivers a proper dose of "stop being an idiot" to Danny No one writes epic found families quite like Charlie!
Anyways, I loved it and definitely recommend the entire series!
**4.5** Danny is just the sunshine that Ezra needs in his life, whilst dealing with a bitter divorce and struggling to cope in general. Danny may have been late in coming to the realisation of who he is attracted to, but he is absolute in his certainty of who he wants to help him explore. These two men together are like chalk and cheese when it comes to temperament. Danny is so bright and happy in general, as opposed to the quieter and struggling Ezra. It makes for a very entertaining read as Ezra battles against the light that Danny brings. Though, he does struggle with the feeling of being accepted and finds it hard when it comes to others finding out about it all, and that's mainly due to the rhetoric that he had to listen to growing up. Each man is very supportive of the other, even though it was never supposed to be anything more than exploration for Danny but neither can help the way that emotions quickly become involved. This is such a great read and truly showcases the best of Charlie Novak as an author and creator. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Danny and Ezra were so fun, I inhaled this so quickly!
I adore this series so much, and it just keeps getting better the more of the team we meet and learn about.
I loved how sunshine-y and puppy like Danny was, Ezra was spot on with that nickname. He was the perfect balance of sweet and bratty for Ezra’s slightly grumpy ‘old man’!
Really looking forward to book 5 with Hunter, Bailey and Aiden!
i’ve been so excited for danny’s story since i met him and this did not disappoint! this is for sure one of my favorites of the series!
we know danny as the guy who is always saying things he shouldn’t, asking things he shouldn’t, being sort of a jerk but in this book we got to see a whole other side to him! danny is such a brat and i freaking love it (you know i love a brat) but he also has this softer more vulnerable side to him that ezra really brings out! when we first meet ezra he’s angry, sad, just going through the motions and i loved getting to see him get his sparkle back and fall in love again! ezra and danny really bring out the best in each other and are exactly what the other needs, their love is just so fun and they just love being around each other. ezra knows exactly what he’s doing when it comes to danny 😉 and how to get him out of his head and have fun!
Very good read with lots of spice and good friends. I liked how these two met and talked through everything and how into each other they were. I liked all the friendships and relationships we saw throughout the book. The ending was great and can’t wait to see the next book
Danny was quite the character. I loved how he was all sunshine and rainbows with a silly side, but he also had profound insights and was really sweet. His brattiness could be a bit much at times but Ezra loved that about him.
Ezra and Danny never tried to change each other, which I appreciated. Ezra loved how over the top Danny was and Danny loved all of Ezra’s broken pieces.
Some of the time gaps between scenes/chapters were irksome because sometimes it wasn’t clear how much time had passed and what had happened in between them. There were scenes I’d love to of read happening instead of just being told them, like a lot of Danny’s sexual firsts, Ezra first sleepover with Danny, etc.
All of the Knight players really are family and it was nice to see them being so accepting of Danny when he came out since he was so scared about it. Bailey and Hunter’s dynamic has always piqued my interest and I’m excited that their book is next and that it involves Jonny’s brother.
- Rugby player X team’s marketing/social media manager - Age gap - Bratty, golden retriever MMC - Queer awakening - MMC going through tough divorce - Fling to lovers

Like the previous books in this series, I loved this book. Danny and Ezra's relationship was beautiful, explosive, understanding, it was EVERYTHING, from Danny realizing his sexuality to Ezra helping him discover himself. I loved them both. It was a light, sexy read, with teammates who are like family. I LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. I can't wait for the next book. From the little we were told in this one, I feel like I'm going to love it.
📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.
I absolutely loved the dynamic between Danny and Ezra. Ezra was exactly what Danny needed to guide him through his journey of self-discovery and acceptance, while Danny helped Ezra heal from his past. Their connection felt genuine, tender, and perfectly balanced — full of heart and heat. And that adorable nickname for Danny? Too cute! Also, the spice in this one is off the charts — honestly, probably the hottest book in the whole series.
As their relationship grows, these two become so much more than just colleagues on the same rugby team. Between the steamy moments and the soft, emotional ones, their story builds toward a beautifully satisfying HEA that left me grinning like an idiot. Plus, the Lincoln Knights found family is back and just as supportive and heartwarming as ever — truly the perfect addition to their journey.
I Love Charlie and I have never hidden that fact, so to be given the chance to ARC read something of hers is an amazing opportunity- and this series RUGBY PLAYERS - nom nom
I love Danny and Ezras story and can't wait for more from the Lincoln Knights 😍

Okay, Danny had me obsessed with him from the very first sentence and now that I'm finished I just can't stop thinking about him!! This was absolutely delicious! Seriously, this is like the ideal low angst, sweet, beautifully smutty, giggle worthy book that just fills you with joy the entire time. I got to the end and I was so sad it was over because Ezra and Danny had such a great connection, that I almost felt like I was leaving friends behind. Plus, all the cameos from the other boys of this series who I adore, had me wanting just 500 more pages of their day-to-day lives. I ADORE a little nickname and Ezra calling Danny puppy because he's excitable, energetic and so very sweet - had me melting!!🫠 SO SWEET. SO HOT! I immediately added this to my future reread list because I want to experience them all over again as soon as I can!👏🏽
I love Danny and Ezra together they make such a cute couple. If you like age gap, rugby, and experimenting then you will love this book. I felt bad for both of them cause they both have trauma but I’m glad they found each other. I hope to see more books in this series. Such a good book!
Danny is such a joyful, playful golden retriever type person with a deep love of rugby, a questionable mullet and a somewhat bratty attitude at times. He questions the person he thought he was supposed to be and wholeheartedly embraces the person he truly knows he is. He does battle is father’s ideas of what real men should be which was drummed into him from an early age but soon learns the men can be whoever and whatever they want. Ezra is 14 years older than Danny and is a bitter and broken man after a very nasty divorce which left him an emotional mess. These two wonderful men soon become more than just employees of the same rugby team and this leads to plenty of steamy times balanced with some sweet tender moments. The cracked edges of Ezra’s heart are happily placed in Danny’s care as they work their way to a heartwarming HEA which left me with a huge smile on my face. Of course the found family of the Lincoln Knights rugby team are all on hand to offer their support along the way!
The Winger is the fourth book in the Lincoln Knights series by Charlie Novak. This is the story of Ezra and Danny. I really liked their story. It was sweet, sexy, full of feels and very well written
Well was not expecting Danny to be the ultimate brat but here we are. Our loveable mullet wearing Winger just needed someone to show him hes loved and appreciated for who he is not who is 'supposed' to be. Charlie did a beautiful job in showing internalized homophobia and how it affects a person on coming to terms with his truth. Ezra is the right man for the job yes hes a little broken from his divorce but thats okay. He needs someone like Danny to show what is to have fun and to see boundaries showing his care. Together with the help of their found family they find a way to show book it's like to other to have a healthy relationship. A great addition to the series glad to see how different Danny is from what I previously thought.
I was given a early copy of this story for my honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ An Absolute Delight in a Beloved Series!
The Winger by Charlie Novak is everything I love about this series and more! From the first chapter, I was swept right back into a world that feels like home. Charlie has such a gift for writing characters who are full of heart, humor, and personality—you can’t help but root for them.
One of the best parts of this book is seeing familiar faces from earlier stories pop up again. It’s so much fun watching past favorites slip into side roles here, adding warmth, depth, and that wonderful sense of community this series does so well. It makes the universe feel so alive and interconnected, and it honestly makes me want to reread the previous books just to revisit everyone.
What I especially loved was how Danny’s journey was handled. His gay awakening has already kind of happened before this book starts, which makes it different from the typical “self-discovery arc.” he is still in the early stages, but instead of discovering he is gay, we see him wrestling with accepting it and what being gay means for his life, identity, future and mainly his image as a rugby player. And even tho it has been done so many times, Charlie wrote it so well it felt refreshing and authentic. On the other side, Ezra’s story was so touching in its own right. The best part? One of them didn’t “save” the other—they each supported and helped one another in different ways, which made their relationship feel balanced, real, and deeply meaningful.
One of the things I just adored about this book was the attention to detail in the character-building. For example, Danny’s grandpa is only mentioned a few times, but it’s enough to explain Danny’s love for reality TV. While these details don’t directly move the plot forward, they give depth to his character and make him feel real and relatable.
I also appreciated the subtle layer added through Danny’s obsession with cleaning. It comes across as more than just a quirk—it reflects how he uses control over his environment to cope with emotions he can’t manage.
It’s these small touches that make the characters stand out. Instead of feeling like flat, generic figures, they come alive as unique and believable people. That kind of careful detail is what elevates the story and keeps it from blending in with all the others.
We also seriously need to talk about The Nickname puppy because i absolutely made me weak in the knees, and the begging? Honestly one of the hottest things ever.
But the most heart-melting part was the constant checking in, the way they always made sure everything was okay, and the all time open communication. That tenderness sealed this book as an all-time favorite for me!
The romance is engaging, the banter sparkles, and the emotional beats hit perfectly. Charlie Novak strikes the ideal balance between laugh-out-loud moments and heartfelt depth, leaving me smiling long after I turned the final page.
I’m already eagerly looking forward to the next installment—because spending time with these characters never gets old. If you’re not reading this series yet, you’re missing out on a truly joyful reading experience!
---
I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reading copy of The Winger, and I’m so thankful to Charlie Novak and her team for letting me enjoy this amazing story early. That said, this review is 100% my honest opinion—and this book deserves all five stars and more.
Book 4 in the Lincoln Knights series tells winger Danny and team social media manager Ezra's story. Danny has been the somewhat annoying, bratty, always-puts-his-foot-in-his-mouth side character in previous books, and those personality traits carry through into his own book. Danny has played the part of shallow fuck boy because he felt he had to to be accepted, but deep down, he knows the life he has been living isn't the one he wants, and he finally feels in a place to explore his true desires. He just needs to find someone experienced and willing to explore with him, and that is where Ezra comes in. Ezra is somewhat broken himself and going through a bitter divorce after finding his ex cheating and had no plans to ever fall in love again. Then along comes Danny, the needy, bratty younger man who happens to be Ezra's kryptonite, and before either of them knows what's happening, there is a connection between them neither of them can deny.
I liked this but didn't love it, and I went into it expecting to love it. The chemistry/connection between Danny and Ezra fell flat for me, and I can't fully explain why; it just did. Danny's "bratty" persona didn't always land properly for me either, and I found it grating at times. I wasn't a fan of the nickname Ezra gave him, and had it been shortened to "Pup," I think it would've felt more natural when it was being used.
I did like seeing Danny go through his journey of self-discovery and figuring out who he is, what he wants, what and who he is attracted to, speaking up about his desires, and learning how to live his life as his true and authentic self. I did wonder in the beginning if Ezra was going to end up with a drinking problem due to his mental and emotional health, but thankfully the author didn't take it down that path. Seeing his character question and blame himself when he shouldn't have been was a very human and understandable reaction for him to have. I do wish we had been given better closure on that aspect of his story regarding his shitty ex, as I was left feeling like it was unfinished, but it made sense for Charlie to keep the book focused on the positive future to keep the low-angst vibes of the book alive.
This wasn't my favourite of this series, which is a shame, but overall it's a decent MM, age-gap, low-angst, quick read. I'm likely in the minority here, as for reasons I can't fully articulate, this didn't land for me. So, if you have read and enjoyed the previous books in this series, I definitely recommend giving this a go too, as Charlie's witty, cozy, and easygoing writing style is present throughout. 🌶🌶
"I was really starting to think that I might like dick. and I had no idea what to do about it."
"Like it or not, my heart had made a decision about Danny without running it past the rest of me. Although I was pretty sure my dick had sponsored the decision, given how my libido had been behaving."
MY OPINION: I am probably the only MM romance reader around that had never read a book by Charlie Novak. With that knowledge, I went into this book blind, knowing nothing about the author or the writing style. I am glad I got the opportunity to read this as an arc.
We start off with spice and ride that train from start to finish. The story as a whole is based around two men who are both going through big changes. But often being physically together smooths those rough edges.
Danny is a Winger in a professional rugby team. As expected by definition, he is expected to be tough, rough, womanizing, and he has been all those things. One of those was a facade, though, and he was weighing on him. From the start, we find out that he is struggling with his identity, and we get to learn what he wants, needs, and hopes for in and out of ‘the bedroom.’ Everything doesn’t actually happen in the bedroom.
Ezra is the social media manager of the team. He was currently living in a terrible apartment, while his cheating ex-husband had his house, money, and belongings hostage. He was broken, battered, and had no intention of getting involved with anybody.
When these two come together, there is a spark, even though Ezra is fourteen years older than Danny. Ezra can’t help but lead Danny through his awakening, showing him what good intimacy is, teaching him how to be with a man, and showing him the things that are really good between two men.
Danny loves it, and realizes what he wants, who he wants. Love isn’t expected, but it finds them. They both have worries and concerns, but they find a path. Ezra takes care of Danny, and in his own way, Danny takes care of Ezra.
I wish I had read the earlier books to maybe get a better feel for Danny’s personality, but I felt like I knew him well enough for this book. I enjoyed their love story, and certainly am glad I got to read my first Charlie Novak book.
This is the one! This might be my favourite book in the series so far. Danny and Ezra are so loveable and Charlie Novak definitely turned up the heat with this one. Danny is so enthusiastic and after the initial hesitation he really jumped right in with his whole body. Ezra calling Danny puppy is the most perfect nickname I have ever read because Danny is literally a golden retriever in human form and I love him for it. These two may have started their relationship with no strings but the way they were supporting one another and spending all their time together created a very tangled unbreakable knot. Danny was looking for someone more experienced to explore his sexuality with and Ezra was unable to resist the bratty rugby player. Both these characters were dealing with a lot in their heads, Ezra was struggling with his divorce and saying he would never fall in love again and Danny was still hesitant about coming out to his teammates but I love how they confided in one another. Danny helped Ezra to see that the divorce wasn’t his fault and that he is very much still loveable and Ezra helped Danny to see that his teammates would support him 100%. I'm so happy that we finally got Danny's book after seeing all his little curious moments in the other Knights books. I also love that we get to see his perspective and how he knows he can say the wrong things sometimes but he also uses his powers to help his friends. And while this book is very focused on Ezra and Danny, I also loved both of their best friends. Shane and Charlie were such great support systems for both of them, helping them realize they can be happy and proud of who they are. Lastly, the conversation between West and Danny had my whole heart, it was such a sweet moment and I can't wait for more Lincoln Knights books!
Danny has a problem. See, he's had a hunch for a while that he might be gay. But due to a homophobic father and the lack of experimentation, he isn't sure. All of his queer teammates are paired up, and Danny would really love someone older to show him the ropes.
Someone like Ezra. Ezra is the team's social media manager, and he's 38 and fresh off a divorce from his cheating ex. When one of the rugby players starts showing an interest in him, Ezra can't help but be tempted. He's only human, after all...
What to expect:
🏉 A bratty winger with a mullet, moustache, and zero patience
🖥️ An experienced, sexy social media manager who loves to be in control
🦵🏼 Leg hump!ng to 💦
🍆 C0ck W@rming
🩳 Slutty shorts
🐶 A super sweet nickname
🥵 So much filthy dirty talk
✅ Praise k!nk
🍹 A love of pina coladas
🗄️ Office sexy times
🌈 Fear of coming out
💙 A very spicy, sweet, and swoony HEA
So, I am on Charlie's ARC team now, but I will still be completely honest with every review.
Honestly? This was my favorite Charlie Novak book to date. From page one, Danny stole my heart. He was so chaotic, but instead of being annoying, it was immediately endearing. His struggle brought me back to when I first found out that I was queer, and I related to him because of that.
Also, the chemistry between Danny and Ezra was electric. Like, burn up your Kindle levels of hot. The dirty talking, Danny's eagerness and desperation, the praise... SO good. And of course we got to check on our other favorite Lincoln Knights. It was hot, it was funny, it was low angst...perfect.
This is book four in the author’s Lincoln Knights series and features Danny, the mustachioed menace with a mullet (hey, that’s an alliteration!). Honestly, the mental picture I got every time I’d read “mullet” and “mustache” describing the same person kinda made me cringe a little every. Blasted. Time. It definitely didn’t match my impression of him everywhere else! For some reason, it kept bringing to mind a picture of Dwayne Schneider from the 70s sitcom, One Day At A Time—not that he was in any way sexy or even had much of a mullet—but the mind can do crazy things. It might’ve been how Danny kept smoothing his mustache and was all golden retriever-ish? I don’t know but it was jarring every time I came across it. Now that’s not to say I didn’t love him, I really did, I just had a very different image of him except when I was reminded differently. Ezra was my favorite though. He was kinda dominant—more of a pleasure Dom than anything else, I guess. Maybe a little broken? Definitely not out for the count though with friends who refused to let him accept the blame for his husband’s cheating and pushed him to live instead of wallowing with his beverage of choice. So I said all of that to say this: the overall storyline behind the Lincoln Knights rugby team, the visits from the guys in the previous books in the series, not to mention all of the horsing around, was great but it’s these two that made this such an awesome read and one that readers—especially those who have read the other books in the series—are gonna want to check out. 4.5 stars

Ezra and Danny’s story absolutely stole my heart. Charlie once again gave us an amazing story with complex and interesting characters. Danny is cocky, sassy, and kinda dickhead rugby player who has a kind heart, genuinely cares for his teammates and supportive of people close to him. And Ezra a little grumpy but is mostly sweet, caring, understanding, bossy and sarcastic. Ezra and Danny’s relationship began with casual hookups which helped Danny in exploring and accepting his sexuality. Ezra gave Danny a safe space and guidance that Danny needed when it came to experimenting with his sexuality. Danny on the other hand helped Ezra to move on in life after a messy divorce. They both became the voice of reason in each other’s lives by assuring the other that their insecurities are nothing but that. They both understood each other very well and gave a lot of importance to honest and open communication which really helped their relationship to flourish. They are definitely made for each other and complement one another exceptionally. With that in mind, I thoroughly enjoyed Ezra and Danny’s flirting and bantering, Danny’s brattiness, Ezra’s bossy attitude, teasing and banter between teammates, sweet moments, heartfelt conversations, dirty talk and spicy scenes. I have always recommended Charlie’s books and this one is no exception.
The mouthy brat meets his match in an older, experienced, man. Danny is a sneaky little sh!t, and completely became a favourite of mine. Which I was not expecting. I was impressed by Dannys insight into himself and his growth, even at the start of the book. Danny genuinely cares about people, I loved the relationship between him and his sister and his grandad. My heart aches for Ezra. His views on queerness and his friendship circle resonate for me, as a queer of a similar age. Danny absolutely needed someone to care for and guide him, Ezra is perfect for that. Ezra definitely needed someone to care for, and someone to show him that being mired in hurt, and feeling broken doesn't mean love and joy are forever beyond him. I love that Jonny and Devon were one of Danny's awakenings and I'm proud of Danny for having the awareness not to ask questions of them. Ezra and Danny are super hot together from the start, even when they are dancing around each other. Ezra nickname for Danny is perfect, sweet and hot as hell. This story reminds me that comp het is the worst, and queer friendship is life saving and life enriching. I did a lot highlighting! Thought I'd share a few gems:
