Book 4 in the Lincoln Knights series tells winger Danny and team social media manager Ezra's story. Danny has been the somewhat annoying, bratty, always-puts-his-foot-in-his-mouth side character in previous books, and those personality traits carry through into his own book. Danny has played the part of shallow fuck boy because he felt he had to to be accepted, but deep down, he knows the life he has been living isn't the one he wants, and he finally feels in a place to explore his true desires. He just needs to find someone experienced and willing to explore with him, and that is where Ezra comes in. Ezra is somewhat broken himself and going through a bitter divorce after finding his ex cheating and had no plans to ever fall in love again. Then along comes Danny, the needy, bratty younger man who happens to be Ezra's kryptonite, and before either of them knows what's happening, there is a connection between them neither of them can deny.
I liked this but didn't love it, and I went into it expecting to love it. The chemistry/connection between Danny and Ezra fell flat for me, and I can't fully explain why; it just did. Danny's "bratty" persona didn't always land properly for me either, and I found it grating at times. I wasn't a fan of the nickname Ezra gave him, and had it been shortened to "Pup," I think it would've felt more natural when it was being used.
I did like seeing Danny go through his journey of self-discovery and figuring out who he is, what he wants, what and who he is attracted to, speaking up about his desires, and learning how to live his life as his true and authentic self. I did wonder in the beginning if Ezra was going to end up with a drinking problem due to his mental and emotional health, but thankfully the author didn't take it down that path. Seeing his character question and blame himself when he shouldn't have been was a very human and understandable reaction for him to have. I do wish we had been given better closure on that aspect of his story regarding his shitty ex, as I was left feeling like it was unfinished, but it made sense for Charlie to keep the book focused on the positive future to keep the low-angst vibes of the book alive.
This wasn't my favourite of this series, which is a shame, but overall it's a decent MM, age-gap, low-angst, quick read. I'm likely in the minority here, as for reasons I can't fully articulate, this didn't land for me. So, if you have read and enjoyed the previous books in this series, I definitely recommend giving this a go too, as Charlie's witty, cozy, and easygoing writing style is present throughout. 🌶🌶
"I was really starting to think that I might like dick. and I had no idea what to do about it."
"Like it or not, my heart had made a decision about Danny without running it past the rest of me. Although I was pretty sure my dick had sponsored the decision, given how my libido had been behaving."
