Zen and Risa are dating. But the way they’re doing it is just utterly unlike any other shojo manga I’ve read. Also, potatoes.

I can’t even with this series, which might be one of the best shojo series I’ve ever had the pleasure to come across. It is an absolute powerhouse in the art and writing department and it continues to zig every single time it looks like it might zag, to delightful effect.

Part of the reason it works so well is that it stays within the lines of expected tropes, but also completely does not. When Risa and Zen start their date at the festival and she just admits that wearing a yukata didn’t even cross her mind because they’re so hard to move in, I wanted to stand up and cheer.

Fuumin, the would-be rival, continues to just make me laugh so hard because he’s about as effective as wishful thinking. Risa couldn’t care less about him and there’s a ton of wonderful moments when she just brushes him off. When he returns towards the end and is about to make her cry, the twist on this is note perfect.

People in love aren’t typically that fickle and this story knows it. When Risa’s cram school instructor Mizuki shows up and it also looks like things are going to be a thing, well, you’d be forgiven for not giving her the benefit of the doubt, but she deserves it.

And good lord is this funny. Fujimomo continues their brilliant penchant for incredible bug-eyed takes and the gags and sharp dialogue are liberally sprinkled throughout to great effect. Zen versus Mizuki is so freaking funny - I just about lost it at the panel with the staircase. Risa literally crawling into a hole is another great little bit too.

I just gushed about how good Blue Box has been for its more grounded realism, but what I love here is that these are all very much characters, but they’re really well done characters and their development has been top notch.

When Risa just shuts down Zen because she has to study it’s kind of wonderful and when that eventually backfires on her, we get a really cute visit and just the most tossed off comment about her mom’s drinking that’s wonderfully descriptive yet just there and then gone. It makes this look effortless.

Even with exams being a thing, romance is flying all over the place. Risa thinking ‘Zen sure likes kissing’ is some serious ‘pot vs kettle’ energy and I love how they’re so different yet work so well as a couple.

Zen in particular is definitely more of a rebel, but he’s not out to change Risa or anything like that. Or even show her another way to live - he respects who she is and loves that and does his best to help, even when she doesn’t know what help she needs. They’re so good together.

I keep waiting for this to mess up but it keeps on surprising me in the best ways. The bonus manga is one of the best parts of the story and there’s so much more that I’d love to go into - Risa making friends is just… look, I highly recommend this story.

5 stars - is this the definitive ‘bad boy’ shojo manga? It may very well be, far as I’m concerned, literally no notes.

On days where my brain fog and fatigue are particularly bad, I’m so glad I have manga to read! Love That’s An Understatement is interesting because the male protagonist, Zen is so straight-forward with what he wants 🥹 also, a second boy helping Risa with her studies, Fumiya is a little suspicious here…!

"It's embarrassing how pathetically in love with you I am."

I've been camped out on my couch sick all day (with a massive headache to boot), but this was light enough that I wasn't struggling to follow the story and just made me feel better and smile! I love these two so much and was absolutely mad at the second ML, but the "twist" is compelling despite that Risa and Zen are head over heels for each other, making him have ZERO chance.

I really enjoyed seeing both our leads grow closer and how Risa is finding that her time with Zen IS helping her focus better because of his "emotional support." It's lovely and very much rooting for her!

I can't wait for this volume to get printed because I am still loving it and will definitely be double dipping when the time comes!

Soo, I binged the entire series in less than 24 hours. Unfortunately, the series is ongoing and I'll now have to wait for new volumes to realease eventually. :(
I will definitely come back and check for new volumes though, because this manga is super cute and definitely worth my time.🥰

My gosh, just when I think I can't like this series anymore than I already did.

It's so funny. The characters are amazing, Risa can be so oblivious at times, but also that makes her more charming. I love her straightforwardness, and I love how earnest Zen is.

There's a love triangle (but not really because Arisa could not care less about this new person besides how smart they are) and I'm interested to see how it's going to play out.

I love how this mangaka writes and draws!!!! This story has been smooth sailing and I’ve been loving every minute of it!!! Zen is absolutely hilarious and has my heart!!! And Risa!!! Oh, Risa! I love her so much. I relate to her awkwardness and how trying to show affection is so hard. Zen understands and is so patient.

Sin lugar a dudas, Más allá del amor no deja de endulzarme el corazón.

Después de haber tenido un primer encuentro no muy favorable con este manga, decidí continuarlo y para mi sorpresa estoy leyéndolo muy emocionado. Es precioso. Risa es hermosa. Zen es divino. Ellos juntos son un amor 💖

En este tomo me reí a más no poder con la cosecha de camotes, y digamos que se me agita un poco el corazón cada vez que se besan (porque sí, son varias las ocasiones, gracias por eso sensei).

La verdad es que no es como cualquier otro shojo que haya seguido antes, ellos son muy diferentes en el estilo de llevar su relación, y me gusta, me divierte.

Risa es completamente mi tipo de chica, esa que vive sonrojándose página tras página y yo me derrito, no puedo con un dibujo tan liiiiindooooo 🥹🎀

Mientras que Zen no es mi tipo, pero mientras sea el tipo de Risa estamos bien. Me gusta cómo la trata, como la cuida, como intenta que siempre esté despejada para seguir ocupándose de sus estudios. Son muy bellos.

Este tomo me dejó completamente colgado con una escena de la que deseo saber más, así que por suerte tengo el siguiente tomo, por lo que lo leeré más pronto de lo que creo.

Después de su primera cita, y de estar varios días sin verse, Risa comienza a comprender cuan profundos son sus sentimientos por Zen y cómo este se preocupa por ella; haciendo que despeje su mente después del simulacro de examen y permitiendo que la joven se percate de lo saludable que es no obsesionarse con el estudio y de que la mente necesita reposo para poder concentrarse después. Al lado de Zen, Risa está creciendo como persona y se da cuenta de lo sola que estaba antes de conocerlo y de que, a pesar de lo que le cuesta mostrar sus sentimientos a los demás, ahora parece poder comunicarse mejor con otras personas de su alrededor.

El único inconveniente de ser la novia de Zen es Fumiya, el pandillero archienemigo de Zen que tiene sus propios planes para fastidiar al chico. Acerándose a Risa durante el festival, el chaval comenzará a percatarse de que Risa no es la chavala rancia y seria que parece en un primer momento y eso hará que, a pesar de que quiera levantarle la novia a Zen para joderlo, cambie su opinión por la muchacha. ¿Qué estará planeando ese maleante entrando en la academia donde estudia Risa? ¿Hasta dónde está dispuesto a llegar en su odio por Zen?

Dieser Band war wieder wirklich toll. Zen ist für Risa da, die beiden gehen auf ihr erstes Date und er erkennt auch, dass Risa mal Ablenkung braucht, um mit dem Lernen gut voranzukommen. Er ist ihr wirklich eine Stütze, und das ist echt süß. Auch seine Kumpels sind witzig, wenn Toji immer noch etwas weird ist. Was bzw. eher wer mich stört ist Fumiya. Ich kapier nicht, warum er Risa nicht alleine lassen kann. Ist er wirklich so sehr darauf aus, Zen eins auszuwischen? Und wenn ja, warum? Was ich auch nicht ganz verstehe ist, warum Risa Zen nichts über ihre zufälligen Treffen mit Fumiya erzählt? Macht sie es, weil sie weiß, dass Zen sonst sauer wird und Ärger anfängt, und will ihn somit schützen? Ich hoffe nur, dass backfired nicht, indem Zen eine Situation falsch versteht … Vor allem, wo Fumiya der Bruder vom Nachhilfelehrer ist - was, wenn da so ein komisches Arrangement entsteht, was ich im Shojo-Manga echt zutrauen kann. Und Zen scheint auch was über sein Privatleben zu verbergen, weil das ist auch etwas weird. Bin weiterhin echt gespannt, wie es zwischen den beiden weitergeht, wie ihre Beziehung voranschreitet und welche Dinge noch so ans Licht kommen.

Recap: They go on their date finally, Risa overthinks not wearing a Yukata and then runs into Fumiya who is up to no good. some stress over the exam and Zen takes her to the potato farm. After Risa studies like before and Fumiya enrolls into the cram school but he’s actually smart. Ends with her forgetting her keys and Zen comes to spend time with her before offering she spend the night.

J’avais l’espoir en débutant ce shojo très très classique d’un brin de révolte et d’un peu de digression. Je dois me faire une raison, on restera dans le cadre connu.

Malgré ses qualités romantiques pour les amateurs d’histoires lycéennes fleurs bleues, je dois avouer m’être presque ennuyée dans tome. Tout est trop gentil, trop lisse. Ce n’est pas mauvais mais pas à mon goût non plus. J’avais envie de plus de relief. J’avais envie de sortir des sentiers battus.

Or, on se retrouve à suivre notre petit couple à leur premier rendez-vous lors d’un festival estival, puis avec la galère des révisions pour les concours / exams, et rien de particulier ressort. On a certes des sentiments qui s’affirme et une relation qui ne se laisse pas défaire par les aléas de la vie. Chacun résiste et ose dire ce qu’il pense. Ça fait du bien une héroïne, qui bien que très candide, ose exprimer ses désirs, aller voir le garçon qui lui manque, etc. J’aime moins le côté accroc trop visible de Zen. C’est presque malaisant tant d’exclusivité et de besoin de l’autre. Il fait vraiment jeune.

Après si on aime les romances lycéennes c’est mimi. Au moins l’héroïne n’écoute pas ceux qui lui disent de laisser l’amour de côté. Elle est moderne, elle décide de concilier les deux, et on sait combien c’est dur au Japon où la pression est grande concernant les études. Mais ça manque un peu plus d’énergie dans la rébellion. C’est un peu fade.

Shojo lycéen des plus classiques. Je croyais que le côté rebelle à moto du héros aurait plus d’implication mais c’est comme toutes les romances du genre depuis des décennies. On a juste peut-être des héros qui osent un peu dire non aux diktats de la société, notamment sur la pression des études. Mais c’est un peu mince, un peu fade, un peu lisse. J’attendais plus.

La storia non sarà il massimo in termini di originalità, però i due protagonisti mi fanno tantissima tenerezza. Visto che il mondo sta andando a farsi benedire, un po' di serotonina non fa mai male, no?
La presenza di Zen rappresenta un punto di svolta fondamentale per Risa, da sempre abituata a fare tutto da sola e a dedicare giorno e notte allo studio: ora c'è qualcuno che desidera passare del tempo con lei, che apprezza tutte le sue sfaccettature, anche quelle più strane. Qualcuno che vuole prendersi cura di lei. Zen (e la sua banda di amici) rappresenta proprio questo. A dispetto delle differenze caratteriali e ambientali, i due si completano abbastanza bene e per Risa questo è il momento di sperimentare tante cose nuove e di lasciarsi andare un po'.
Ci sono però due cose che mi fanno storcere il naso: 1) la storia si sta muovendo troppo velocemente, siamo solo al volume tre e sembra quasi che la proposta di matrimonio sia dietro l'angolo, e 2) non capisco l'utilità del personaggio di Fumiya, il rivale di Zen che si è fissato su Risa, convinto quasi che la ragazza provi della simpatia nei suoi confronti (spoiler, no, la ragazza non se lo fila di pezza). Spero che non sia l'inizio di un altro inutile triangolo o di vagonate di angst gratuita 🤔

Somehow this volume was really fun and satisfying?! Guess I was in the mood for some light, fluffy shojo!

I appreciate that Zen and Risa’s relationship is developing slowly but steadily. Seeing Risa grow and mature as a character and learn from her interactions with Zen is also pleasing. It *is* important to rest and relax, lemme tell ya.

The goofy expressions Risa and other characters make had me laughing more than once. (Not as goofy as Takane’s eye-piercing smirks in “Hana and Takane”but lovable all the same.)

I also enjoy Risa’s interactions with Zen’s friends, and even the rival character.

There are no words for how much I'm enjoying this manga. Honestly, my 15 year old self is so happy right now and wishing this had happened to me in high school. Living vicariously through these characters. Honestly, if you haven't picked up this manga you really should. Like RIGHT NOW!
