I knew I would love this book. I have had the pleasure of beta-reading for the last two ‘Equals’ stories – which I adored - but wasn’t able to for this one, so it’s been killing me that I didn’t get to read it until now. I can happily say it was worth the wait. Stephen and Russ never disappoint me.

Because I read this over the holiday and I’ve had guests, I haven’t been able to write the review, which is unfortunate, because I’m one of those that forget details within hours of finishing a book. So, my apologies to the author, that, once again, I’m letting her down on this one.

Family is a lovely continuation of Russ and Stephen’s journey as they build their relationship. Most of us have suffered through the first awkward holiday gathering with our new partner’s family. In this case, it’s Stephen who has to work his way carefully into Russ’ somewhat dysfunctional family, consisting of Russ’s dad (Alan) and sister (Addie). His sister also unexpectedly brings along her new boyfriend (Joseph).

I think what I enjoy most about Brigham’s writing is that it is very realistic. There isn’t huge family drama here. Russ’ family is not a bunch of homophobes. They aren’t exactly openly accepting of Russ and Stephen’s relationship either. They’re at varying points in-between. Actually, the age difference between Russ and Stephen seems to bother them more and led to this conversation that made me chuckle:

“’Did you watch the moon landing?’ Addie asked, and he saw Alan wince, and the table went silent. Russ’ look of horror nearly made him chuckle. He cleared his throat and tried to hide his dismay. He wasn’t that old. ‘Well, I was alive for it, but I certainly don’t remember it., Addie. I was only two. I am sure my family watched it though, and I certainly remember the Challenger disaster.’”

Another conversation had me grinning from ear-to-ear for the PSA behind it. Normally it bugs me when an author inserts a political statement or moral agenda into their story, but this conversation between Russ and his sister was a moment of sheer brilliance:

“’You know, I like Stephen and all, but ya’ could have been nice enough to date a woman so I’d have an ally, Russ.’ Her tone was teasing, and Russ grinned. ‘I could have dated a woman as easily as you could have, Addie.’”

Oh….snap!

We also see another glimpse of Evan, who we met in Partners, and once again, it makes me anxious to read his story. Another way of saying I’ll take any excuse to hang out with Russ and Stephen again.

While Partners was very focused on Stephen's past and family, Family: A Holiday Novella is very much focused on Russ and the relationship he has with his own family.

This is Russ and Stephen's first Christmas together and they have invited Russ's sister and father to Atlanta for the holiday's so that Stephen can get to know them and they him. Russ is all kinds of tense about it, considering that his relationship with hi sister had been strained for most of her life, thanks to the bigoted aunt who raised her.

Like the other books in this series, Family is very much relationship driven rather than story driven. I enjoyed it well enough and liked seeing both Russ and Stephen navigate their way through family interactions. And, while this series didn't hold enough interest for me to put it on my reread list, I enjoyed it enough the first time through.

Non c’è niente di meglio che ritrovare dei personaggi che avevamo amato in versione natalizia, perché ci danno modo di conoscerli un po’ di più dentro la cornice del periodo più magico dell’anno.
Questa novella parte qualche mese dopo la fine del secondo libro, ovvero dopo il viaggio nelle origini di Stephen, nella città della sua infanzia, per il funerale del padre.
Russ e Stephen stanno per affrontare il loro primo Natale insieme e stanno ancora lottando per trovare un loro equilibrio come coppia, al di là della differenza d’età, delle possibilità economiche di ognuno e del fatto che Stephen sia un superiore di Russ al lavoro.
La festa di Natale aziendale, con cui la storia comincia, ci mostra come si muovono i nostri protagonisti, guadagnando terreno un poco alla volta, senza abbassare troppo la guardia e, al contempo, senza rinnegare il diritto ad amarsi come meritano.
Ma la vera sfida è il pranzo natalizio con i parenti, perché Russ ha avuto la (s)fortunata idea di invitare il padre e la sorella per trascorrere assieme le feste dopo tanto tempo.
Non mancano gli imprevisti e i momenti di tensione, perché è tempo per Russ di affrontare il fanstasma del suo Natale passato, ma Stephen gli è vicino, lo supporta e lo consola, dimostrandosi un partner dolce e premuroso.
Anche Stephen, a suo modo, deve fare i conti con scomodi sentimenti e incertezze, ma è l’amore a prevalere. Questa storia è dolce, romantica, spruzzata con un po’ di agrodolce e con il contorno di rivalsa. Anche le scene sensuali, pur non molto numerose, sono piacevoli, coinvolgenti e hot.
La famiglia di Russ non è perfetta, ma saprà stupirvi e, assieme ai nostri protagonisti, saprà regalarvi qualche ora di gradevole intrattenimento.
Restando in attesa del prossimo volume, che chiude questa bellissima serie, vi consiglio intanto di leggervi questo.

Over the first two books in this series, Equals and Partners, I’ve gotten quite attached to both Russ and Stephen. I’ve been invested in their relationship and happiness from the very first moment they got together and enjoy every glimpse into their lives as it comes my way.

The wonderful thing about these stories, for me, is the steady and realistic progression of the relationship between Russ and Stephen. If you’re anything like me you often wonder what might happen next to the characters once you finish a book. The Equals series gives you the opportunity to see what comes after the happy ending.

Brigham Vaughn impressed me with the way in which she portrayed a fragmented family coming together during what is a very stressful time of the year. The balance between politeness, tolerance and learning how to deal with each other was both realistic and intriguing. And I love that she didn’t make it a miraculously perfect get-together but rather showed the characters carefully laying the foundations for what may well turn into a wonderful family bond, over time.

As always Brigham’s writing is smooth and precise. This author doesn’t run away with herself or with her words. Instead she paints a vivid picture with clear brush strokes, allowing her readers to see the action and hear the dialogue.

I am very much looking forward to my next meeting with Stephen and Russ. Like I said, I’ve gotten quite attached to them.

This was a perfect addition to the Equals series and the love story of Russ and Stephen. I've been wondering about that box that Miss Esther gave Stephen from his father's things. I loved finally getting to meet Russ' family too. I won't lie, there was some dread I was fearing when faced with Addison meeting Stephen considering the way their aunt had raised her but it worked out even better than I expected. Such a lovely and beautifully written Christmas story. I look forward to more of Russ and Stephen, hint, hint Miss Vaughn.

Reconnecting can be difficult at times, especially when you really want it to happen perfectly.
Brigham's Christmas story with Russ and Stephen is a wonderful reminder that not everything goes exactly as planned, but when you can deal with what is thrown at you in a positive way, you can be happy in the end. These two guys are opening up more with themselves, each other, and allowing others to see it too! What a great holiday read of these two sexy men. I adored Alan, loved Russ, and I want to hug Stephen tight. Family is what it's all about!

This was a very sweet, heart warming story of Stephen and Russ getting together for the first time with Russ' family!! A little anxiety thrown into the mix especially since Stephen's father had passed a few months ago. Stephen still struggles with the fact that he no longer has a family and the hatred his parents had, but now Russ' family is now his. Great story during the holidays!!

I love this Equals series, and this third book is about Russ' family visiting at Christmas. Filled with the real kind of stuff that most families face, this is a heartwarming look at all the baggage we carry with love and understanding. I loved reading this as a lot of it struck home for me.

“Intimamente pensava che il matrimonio, il divorzio e i bambini fossero più di quanto potesse gestire e provò un istante di gratitudine per essere gay. Magari negli anni si era sentito solo, ma il pensiero di doversi occupare delle aspettative di così tante persone sarebbe stato estenuante. E poi, non aveva mai voluto dei figli, ma immaginò che un simile desiderio potesse cambiare ogni cosa. Un sacco di uomini gay si mettevano assieme e si sistemavano così da poter adottare dei bambini. Buon per loro, se quello li rendeva felici, ma non riusciva a vedere ciò come parte della sua vita e Russ non aveva mai espresso alcun interesse nei bambini. Il suo sguardo saettò dove era seduto il compagno, impegnato a parlare con uno dei membri del consiglio di amministrazione. Era colpito da come Russ sembrasse a proprio agio in qualsiasi evento sociale, capace di apparire tranquillo e sicuro di sé anche quando si sentiva all’opposto. A dispetto del luogo in cui era stata programmata quella festa, Russ doveva sentirsi almeno un po’ nervoso a parlare con una delle persone che avevano il futuro della compagnia nelle proprie mani, ma, da lontano, Stephen poteva vedere una posa rilassata che denotava apertura e l’espressione interessata. Diamine, quanto amava quell’uomo. La sua sicurezza lo avrebbe portato lontano.”

Ritroviamo qui, i protagonisti di “Compromessi” e “Partners “, Russ e Stephen sono ormai una coppia serena, e si sono lasciati alle spalle molti dei loro problemi. Ora, finalmente, Stephen non pensa continuamente ai tanti anni di differenza che li distanziano e Russ riesce ad accettare con grazia i regali del suo compagno, mitigando l’orgoglio che, nei primi tempi, ha spesso minato il loro rapporto. Russ ha invitato per Natale la sua famiglia, il padre Alan e la sorella Addison, con cui ha riallacciato rapporti solo da poco. Alan Bishop, dopo qualche insistenza, si è fatto convincere ad accettare una vacanza pagata da suo figlio, dimostrando, però, lo stesso orgoglio che ha sempre caratterizzato Russ nei confronti delle possibilità economiche del compagno, ma cedendo infine al desiderio di rivedere il figlio che da tempo non riabbracciava. Addison, dopo aver interrotto ogni rapporto col giovane per anni, plagiata dai pregiudizi della zia con cui viveva, si è riavvicinata al fratello, che l’ha aiutata a riprendersi da un’aggressione, ma gli anni passati credendo che i gay fossero un’abomino non permettono alla giovane di essere completamente rilassata con la sessualità del fratello. Russ, con questo invito, intende rinsaldare i rapporti famigliari e presentare ufficialmente il compagno; Natale sembra l’occasione ideale per riscoprirsi una famiglia, ma le sorprese e i problemi non mancheranno.

Se non avete letto i due libri precedenti, questo nuovo capitolo vi dirà ben poco, ci sono rimandi a episodi accaduti nel passato e avvenimenti molto semplici. Ogni libro si riaggancia al precedente, ritroviamo perciò la scatola di ricordi appartenuta ai genitori di Stephen, che si rivelerà probabilmente il fulcro di un prossimo capitolo, la sorella di Russ che si sta lasciando alle spalle la brutta esperienza e presenta al padre e al fratello il ragazzo che le ha ridato fiducia, e che, guardando i due uomini interagire, comincia a capire quanto si amino e inizia a venire a patti con i suoi preconcetti. Alan fa la conoscenza dell’uomo amato da suo figlio e si deve confrontare col fatto che è di poco più giovane di lui, ma una volta scoperto quanto il figlio sia felice, lo accoglie nel proprio cuore. Per Stephen, questo Natale, è la possibilità, per la prima volta dopo molto tempo, di sentire di fare parte di una famiglia, e se questo gli dà qualche attimo di tristezza, gli dà anche speranze di molti altri Natali in cui lui e Russ non saranno più soli. E poi ci sono loro come coppia, due uomini che sono riusciti ad arrivare a una piacevole convivenza, che sono scesi a compromessi e che ora si godono il loro amore. Non accade molto in questo libro, ma la lettura risulta comunque piacevole e la scrittura dell’autrice è indubbiamente bella, così come lo sono le scene d’amore fra i due protagonisti, ma lo consiglio solo a chi ama ritrovare vecchi personaggi e continuare a sbirciare nelle loro vite, perché non aggiunge niente alla storia.

Aspettavo questo romanzo da… SEMPRE! Mesi e mesi a fare mobbing con “Quando esce? Se esce, è MIO. Nessuno può recensire la ‘Equals’, è MIA”; e il maiuscolo è d’obbligo davanti a questa scrittrice. Io la amo, non posso farci niente. Questa serie è merito suo, ma è come una creatura che sto vedendo nascere e quindi posso solo rubare dei momenti bellissimi e tentare di descriverli in questa recensione.

Sono particolarmente affezionato a questa serie perché grazie a “Compromessi” sono riemerso da un personale blocco del lettore, trovando un nuovo slancio. Essere un recensore non è soltanto parlare e dare un pare su un libro; io l’ho sempre vissuto come uno stile di vita. Parlare dei propri sentimenti, di tutte quelle emozioni che arrivano durante la lettura e poi aprire la mente ai pensieri più profondi e dolci.

Quando leggete le mie recensioni immaginatemi seduto su una polverosa poltrona con tanto di lampada da terra in stile Tiffany (nella mia fantasia non bado a spese! XD).

Però adesso preparatevi perché è ora di dare inizio a questa festa di Natale.

Ritorniamo ancora ad Atalanta a riscoprire questa fantasia di Natale con Stephen e Russ. Ormai siete tutti a conoscenza del mio amore per la figura di Stephen in ogni romanzo. Adorarlo è dir poco. Aaaaah l’aMMore! Aaaah i daddy, tacci loro quanto so boni!

Le feste di Natale aziendali sono sempre trascorse senza troppa enfasi per Stephen, e vedere adesso il suo compagno dialogare con i suoi colleghi e superiori è troppo bello per essere vero. È trascorso parecchio tempo da quel caffè rovesciato, ma è sempre incredibile vedere come le loro vite siano cambiate. Stephen non è mai stato un uomo pronto a negare la sua sessualità, ma questo non lo ha mai portato a incentrare attenzioni su di essa. Quello che più mi piace in lui è l’amore che si percepisce dai suoi occhi, desidero sempre ardentemente che qualcuno mi guardi come lui fa con Russ. Quando si abbattono tutte le barriere e le etichette… questo è amore.

Era da tempo che Russ non vedeva suo padre e per di più sua sorella, e adesso che i rapporti tra di loro si stavano rafforzando non poteva non trascorrere le festività natalizie in compagnia della sua famiglia.

Fin da subito si percepisce l’agitazione del ragazzo per i preparativi, la paura che qualcosa possa andare storto e tutte le aspettative che ognuno si crea in queste circostanze, e Stephen è semplicemente adorabile nello stare accanto al suo compagno, con tutte le sue rassicurazioni e tutte le cure che solo un amante possiede.

Come viene descritto nella sinossi “è nell’imperfezione che forse si trova la felicità”, niente di più vero. È tutta una serie che combattiamo per trovare compromessi: arrendiamoci… l’amore non è perfetto, non si avvicina neanche lontanamente a questa definizione, ma l’Amore è qualcosa che si costruisce in due. Nasce da pochi e semplici sguardi, ma poi non è mai facile trovare il proprio spazio nel cuore dell’altro. Sta a noi costruire quel posto sicuro, trovare quei meccanismi dove l’imperfezione dell’altro trova la giusta collocazione nella vita del proprio compagno. Arrendiamoci a queste considerazioni e lasciamo che l’amore prenda vita da tutto questo e molto altro.

Va bene è ora di fare coming out: prima ho detto che l’adoro ma… no: sono follemente innamorato della figura di Stephen, forse lo avevate già intuito… Il suo animo è gentile e comprensivo, pur restando con un carattere deciso. Questo è un mix esplosivo per la sua figura in questi romanzi. Lo abbiamo visto abbattuto e sconfitto dagli eventi del passato, ma proprio attraverso Russ ritroviamo tutta la sua forza di lottare.

È un racconto breve con grandi note romantiche, e con una dolcezza nella narrazione che scalda il cuore come i raggi di sole in una bella, frizzante e fredda giornata invernale.

Mettete dentro la giusta quantità d’amore, tutte le paure e la voglia di affrontarle e troverete certamente piacevole passare del tempo in compagnia di Russ e Stephen.

Siete ancora lì a dubitare se leggere o meno questo libro? Scaldate i pollici e iniziate a scorrere le pagine di questo bellissimo racconto.

I can read Christmas stories any time of the year, especially heartwarming ones like this, after suffering in “Partners” it was nice to just relax and enjoy.
It’s their first Christmas together and Stephen has decided to invite Russ’s family.
In the past, Russ had quite a good relationship with his father, Alan. It might not have been perfect but their was genuine affection, unlike his sister, problems arose because she was raised by her homophobic aunt after their mother abandoned them and let her aunt influence her.
This time however, she’s bringing her new boyfriend, who also happens to be very open minded and helps her to see and understand that there was nothing bad/wrong in Stephen’s and Russ’s love for each other.
Our men only have this family and as I have said, it’s not perfect, but their love comes shining through when a gaffe is made about surprisingly enough, not their homosexuality but their age-gap!
Alan was a great sub-character for me, I really liked him. He was a good man and it showed when Stephen told him about his parents and his response was “You have Russ now and he’s a good man. And for what it’s worth, ya have Addie and myself, as well. Ya have family, now”.
A good heartwarming novella but it’s not too sweet and the interaction between the characters are very realistic.

Sweet Holiday Novella

We catch up with the guys at Christmas. Russ's family is coming for the holiday and he is nervous because it has been so long since they have all been together. Stephen is just wanting to make this holiday good for Russ, and so he is putting it all out there. A mishap or two, lots of love and laughter, Stephen finally feels like he has a family of his own!
