A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin

Rate this book
London Society demands perfection. Hetty Tolliver is about to deliver absolute chaos.

As the eldest of five sisters, Miss Henrietta Tolliver is everything a proper young lady ought to be: elegant, accomplished and endlessly agreeable… and she is utterly, mind-numbingly bored of it. If she must smile sweetly through one more pianoforte recital or suffer another dull dinner party spent discussing drainage, she might very well scream. Her solution is simple, and entirely improper: she shall engineer a scandal so ruinous that no respectable gentleman would dare offer for her hand.

Theodore Winslow, the Earl of Langley, is her childhood friend, London’s most notorious flirt and precisely the sort of man foolish enough to help. Theo considers Hetty’s plan absurd... which makes it all the more irresistible. After all, what harm could come from a few stolen dances, a scandalously low neckline, and perhaps a duel or two?

Unfortunately, what begins as a mock courtship soon unravels in a most inconvenient fashion: Hetty is declared the Diamond of the Season, suitors flock by the dozen, and the gossip columns swoon over their tender romance. Somewhere between moonlit kisses, an accidental shooting and a faux engagement that refuses to remain pretend, Hetty discovers that the true danger is not in scandal… but in falling hopelessly, disastrously in love.

A riotous Regency romantic comedy bursting with banter, bedlam, and one increasingly besotted earl.

Perfect for fans of Julia Quinn, Evie Dunmore, and Bridgerton’s most delicious scandals.

Another fantastic book from Samantha Blok but completely different from her last two! If you like regency romance and the type of dialogue filled with wit and banter, this is the book for you. It’s a little Bridgerton-esque but more like the show than the books, the characters are sharper and saucier.

Hetty is the eldest daughter of the Tollivers and she is willing to do anything it takes to avoid getting married, including pretend to be courting her childhood best friend, Theo. These pair are the best kind of friends to lovers, the chemistry and tension were top notch.

The other Tollivers were perfect, the sharp mum willing to do whatever it takes to get her daughter down the aisle (in a fun, loving way), the scattered dad, the over protective older brother and the little sisters surrounded by chaos (chicken in the tea room, anyone?) - it gave me Pride and Prejudice vibes - they’re the best kind of unsuitable 🩷

The world was immersive for me and I could see Hetty and Theo in the ballroom, the park, the tea room, etc, it was perfect! We’ve got a slow build to a spicy end, and it was very well paced, not a slow burn exactly but not rushing into bed either.

I loved it, it was fun, sweet, easy to read (I devoured it) and if you like regency romance I definitely recommend picking it up!

all all the elements you can love in a regency romance! I merely wish that it had a better progression especially after 50% cause it felt like the author didn't know how to progress with the circumstances. would have been a 5 star if there were stakes more involved but loved this nonetheless! very excited for the next one and will be reading 😋

If you are someone who enjoys a good regency fake dating story then this is the novel for you. A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin is an elegant and comedic Regency novel that will have your laughing and swooning from the romance. I know for a fact that I enjoyed the novel the plot was subpar and the characters were truly wonderful!

We are introduced to Hetty who is from a well to do family and is the oldest of five sisters. The upcoming season is approaching which she absolutely loathes. The only way she can get out of it is by causing a scandal. Enter Theo her childhood friend who is now the Earl of Langley and a notorious rake agrees with her plan involving a fake courtship. Afterall what could go wrong?

Hetty and Theo manage to pull it off without a hitch. However, soon it becomes clear that what they feel is so much more. Will Theo be able to put aside his womanizing ways and become a proper husband?

Thank you to Samantha Blok and BookFunnel for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin is out 4 October.

This was an elegant, witty, and utterly swoon-worthy Regency romp that had me laughing, sighing, and fanning myself in equal measure. Fans of Julia Quinn will feel right at home—this one very much carries a Bridgerton-esque vibe in tone, manner, and spice. At times, it felt almost too reminiscent, which left me a little torn between delight and déjà vu.

That said, I adored the tropes on offer: friends-to-lovers, fake dating, slow burn, and all the delicious chaos that comes with a faux courtship spiralling out of control. Theo’s rakish charm was impossible to resist, and Hetty’s determination to scandalise London Society was as fun as it was reckless. Their banter sparkled, the chemistry sizzled, and the moonlit kisses? Chef’s kiss. 💕

If you’re a historical romance purist, be warned—this definitely has a modern edge, and the gritty realities of Regency life are glossed over. Personally, I didn’t mind; I was here for the frothy fun, and that’s exactly what I got.

A most dreadful guide to ruin? Perhaps. A most delightful read for a cosy weekend? Absolutely.

This was exactly the cozy gothic romance I needed! From the very first chapter, this book delivers on the promise of the synopsis.

I immediately fell in love with Hetty’s fierce, self-assured aura. She is the kind of female protagonist I can absolutely root for and relate to, determined to seize control of her own destiny, even if it means engineering her own downfall. The cheeky narration perfectly captured her rebellious spirit and made the entire read fly by.

The dynamic between Hetty and Theo is pure gold. Their banter is sharp, witty, and truly the highlight of the book. I particularly loved how caring and protective Theo was before he even acknowledged his own feelings; it made his eventual realization of love so much more satisfying. Plus, the dynamic between Hetty and her sisters and brother was absolutely adorable and grounded the high-society drama.

My only critique is that I felt the central romance peaked a bit too early. While the setup and the "mock courtship" were incredible, I found the second half of the book to be a bit slow-paced as the drama shifted.

Highly recommend for anyone who loves an accomplished heroine with a plan, and a mischievous hero who is foolish enough to help!

Absolutely adored this book! If you love Bridgerton, you will fall head over heels for this regency tale of scandal, chaos, family and unequivocal, heart thundering love.

Hetty Tolliver does not want to enter society and open the door to finding a husband. In fact she will do anything in her power to stop this from happening.

Enter Theodore Langley, the charming rake and childhood friend. They form a plan to scandalise the ton and take Hetty off the market once and for all.

Plans have a habit of going awry and that is exactly what you can expect from this story.

Samantha Blok’s writing is fantastic. Witty, sarcastic and full of detail that transports you into this world. The complete belly laughs the banter in this book provided make me want to read it all over again!

Thank you for trusting me with this ARC! I cannot wait to dive into the next book into the series!

I loved this book from its very first chapter. The tolliver family is an absolute catastrophe, and it made them so immensely enjoyable that I couldn't put the book down.

I spent a lot of the book laughing out loud. From the family hijinks to hetty and theos attempts at creating scandal the humour was none stop. I have never known a plan to fail quite so spectacularly. Each character has their own personality, and it feels like a very real family.

Hetty and Theo are perfect together. The initial jump from friends to attraction felt rather quick, but I enjoyed the slower pace we got after that as their feeling grow. Their banter is probably some of the best I've read in a romance like this in a long time. Theres also some amazingly sweet moments that really solidify the relationship.

I truly can't wait to read the rest of the series. I can see it becoming a favourite of mine. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read the book.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that I, Shreya, enjoy a wonderful regency rom-com, and Samantha Blok's novel, A MOST DREADFUL GUIDE TO RUIN gave me the loveable vibes that I enjoyed when I read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE during my junior year of high school!

The story follows Henrietta (Hetty) Tolliver, the eldest of the Tolliver sisters who is mature, sensible, and completely bored with her 'good girl' life. Intending to cause a scandal, she enters a fake relationship with Earl Theodore Langley, her childhood best friend and a man with a scandalous reputation, in order to dismay any potential suitors.

Hetty was by far my favorite character. She had incredible chemistry and banter with Theo and she was a good older sister. I have to commend Blok's ability to write chemistry because Hetty and Theo had an abundance of it. However, I feel like Hetty was generally apathetic, if not, annoyed by her sisters. I'm sure this wasn't the case, but she was written to sound a little arrogant when it came to them, and I kind of wish we had more closure on how what happened with Lottie, because I feel like the blame was placed indirectly on Lottie, even though it was Hetty that sort-of caused the accident.

As for Theo, I wanted to know so much more about him! The substance to these characters as individuals was what I felt lacked the greatest. Together, they had amazing chemistry, but separately I didn't understand who they were. Theo's character developed far too quickly in my opinion. One moment he's a gallivanting womanizer, and in a mere couple of chapters, he's head over heels for Hetty. I will say, however, that I do LOVE a man who will lay down his life for his woman, and Theo's 'my love' 🥰just made me swoon! And the way he protected Hetty's honor 🥵those men didn't stand a chance with Theo!

I loved, loved, LOVED Hetty's sisters! I related, personally, to Mari, Hetty's shy, bookworm sister, and I hope that we get her story soon! I didn't understand a lot about Nell and Georgie, but I loved seeing Lottie's role in the story, her spunk and fire! I can already sense the enemies-t0-lovers vibe with her story (maybe with Jasper 👀) Benedict, Hetty's older brother, was honestly so funny even though he was meant to be that 'older brother type'. I thought, at times, he came off a bit too strong with being protective over Hetty. There was really no reason apart from just being her older brother? I wish there was more of a reason why he was so protective, but I loved him all the same. That scene where he was chasing Lottie was hilarious 😂

The plot, I felt, was very cozy and sweet because we got a lot of scenes with Theo and Hetty, but I think it also lacked a lot of substance. There wasn't a huge scandal like I was expecting and for the most part, there wasn't a lot happening. I wanted to see more interactions between Hetty, Theo, and others in society to see how they'd evolve through their relationship, but the pacing moved very quickly.

Overall, this was a very cozy, sweet read, and I look forward to reading about the other sisters! I know we have Georgie and Lottie coming up next, but as an introverted girlie, I'm hyped for Mari! I loved all the cameos from other regency era novels and I'm excited to see if Jasper and Lottie are the ones for each other! We also LOVE our man Theo, who will literally build a house for Hetty, and our smart, witty Hetty! Hetty was truly a favorite of mine with her wit, charm, and intelligence! She was one of those characters who's described as intelligent and is actually intelligent!

So, if you're bored waiting for Sophie and Benedict or want another shot at reading a variation of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's story, then A MOST DREADFUL GUIDE TO RUIN is for you!

BETTER THAN BRIDGERTON.

And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Bridgerton, but I loved this book even more.

We’ve got: childhood best friends ➝ scandalous partners-in-mischief ➝ forced engagement ➝ marriage ➝ lovers. Absolute catnip.

There were plot twists I didn’t see coming, and the development of Henrietta and Theo’s characters was so lovely. I especially appreciated the dual POV—I knew this man was absolutely whipped for Hetty, and it was clear she was the one with all the emotional hang-ups (relatable).

✧ 𝒯𝒽𝑒𝑜 𝒫𝒪𝒱 ✧
“𝐼𝓉 𝓌𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹 𝒷𝑒 𝒶 𝓈𝒶𝒹 𝓌𝒶𝓈𝓉𝑒 𝒾𝓃𝒹𝑒𝑒𝒹 𝓉𝑜 𝓈𝑒𝑒 𝒽𝑒𝓇 𝓂𝒶𝓇𝓇𝒾𝑒𝒹 𝑜𝒻𝒻 𝓉𝑜 𝓈𝑜𝓂𝑒 𝒹𝓊𝓁𝓁 𝓈𝓉𝒾𝒸𝓀 𝓌𝒽𝑜 𝒸𝑜𝓊𝓁𝒹 𝓃𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝓅𝓅𝓇𝑒𝒸𝒾𝒶𝓉𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓂𝑒𝓃𝒶𝒸𝑒 𝒷𝑒𝒽𝒾𝓃𝒹 𝒽𝑒𝓇 𝒸𝑜𝓂𝓅𝑜𝓈𝓊𝓇𝑒.”

The writing style was beautiful and immersive. I felt completely transported into the early 1800s lives of the wealthy elite. I also loved the differences between the sisters, even if I did mix up who was older, who preferred books and quiet, and who was over-the-moon about marriage (that one’s on me, not the author).

One of my favourite touches was the contrast within the Tolliver household—this wealthy, respected family of the ton… with chickens and random animals running around the halls and drawing room. It was the right amount of familial chaos that made it relatable if you have wild younger siblings, a happy-go-lucky father and attention-detailed mother like I do.

Hetty and Theo’s relationship was beautifully crafted. I loved that he fell first, and that their romance kept the foundation of their friendship. Hetty’s rough-around-the-edges sass is something Theo admires and makes space for, and Theo’s protectiveness and nonjudgmental attitude toward Hetty’s “strange” ideas was prevalent throughout the book and I ate it up with a spoon.

ꕤ 𝐻𝑒𝓉𝓉𝓎 𝒫𝒪𝒱 ꕤ
“𝐻𝑒 𝒽𝒶𝒹 𝒶𝓁𝓌𝒶𝓎𝓈 — 𝓈𝒽𝑒 𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓁𝒾𝓈𝑒𝒹 — 𝑒𝓃𝒸𝑜𝓊𝓇𝒶𝑔𝑒𝒹 𝒽𝑒𝓇 𝓉𝑜 𝓃𝑜𝓉 𝓂𝑒𝓇𝑒𝓁𝓎 𝑒𝓍𝒾𝓈𝓉, 𝒷𝓊𝓉 𝓉𝑜 𝓁𝒾𝓋𝑒 𝒾𝓃 𝒶𝓁𝓁 𝑜𝒻 𝓁𝒾𝒻𝑒’𝓈 𝒻𝓊𝓁𝓁𝓃𝑒𝓈𝓈, 𝓉𝑜 𝒷𝑒 𝓁𝑜𝓊𝒹, 𝓁𝒶𝓊𝑔𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔, 𝒻𝓇𝒾𝓋𝑜𝓁𝑜𝓊𝓈, 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒻𝑜𝑜𝓁𝒾𝓈𝒽, 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓌𝒽𝑜𝓁𝓁𝓎, 𝓊𝓃𝒶𝓅𝑜𝓁𝑜𝑔𝑒𝓉𝒾𝒸𝒶𝓁𝓁𝓎 𝒽𝑒𝓇𝓈𝑒𝓁𝒻.”

For the lovers of spice, the spicy scenes were the good kind; completely character-driven, with just the right balance of sweet and steamy for this relationship arc. No crazy kinks (vanilla, if you will) but anything else would have been too jarring to the characters and, frankly, the societal expectations of the time.

5/5 stars.
No notes. No faults. I already can’t wait for Book 2.

A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin is an elegant, witty, and utterly swoon-worthy Regency romp that had me laughing, sighing, and fanning myself in equal measure.

If you love a good Regency-take on a dating story, this novel is an absolute treat. Samantha Blok delivers all the best tropes—friends to lovers, fake dating, and a slow-burn romance—wrapped up in a tale that is both sparkling with humour and delightfully scandalous.

Theo’s rakish charm was impossible to resist, and the moment he realised his feelings for Hetty… I was absolutely ruined. What begins as a mock courtship spirals into something far more dangerous when Hetty is declared the Diamond of the Season, suitors appear in droves, and gossip columns lap up every detail of their tender (and very public) romance. Between moonlit kisses, an accidental shooting, and a faux engagement that refuses to stay pretend, Hetty learns that the true peril isn’t scandal—it’s falling hopelessly, disastrously in love.

I adored Hetty and her sisters from the very first page. Their chaotic, lively energy bursts off the page, and the family dynamic is both hilarious and heartwarming. Mrs. Tolliver, determined to marry off Hetty at all costs, was a particular favourite—equal parts ridiculous and unforgettable.

What I loved most is how natural the storytelling felt. Hetty’s plans were logical in their own way, always almost working before tumbling into delightful chaos. Theo’s easygoing charm and unfazed acceptance of the Tolliver family’s antics made him the perfect match for her. Their chemistry was undeniable, and their banter kept me grinning throughout.

Blok’s writing is witty, smooth, and wonderfully entertaining, filled with quick banter and moments of pure charm. The characters are beautifully developed, the romance deliciously slow-burn, and the comedy spot on.

This book had everything I want in a Regency romance—glittering scandal, heartfelt family moments, and a love story that left me absolutely swooning.

A five-star gem for fans of Julia Quinn, Tessa Dare, or anyone who adores a clever, comedic Regency romance.

Thanks to Booksirens for a copy of this book and this is my freely given opinion.

This is a historical rom-com from an author who is new to me, and I was charmed by the story and quite enjoyed the wit and humour in it.

Henrietta Tolliver is the eldest daughter of an aristocratic family, with high expectations to wed, especially with 5 sisters waiting to be launched, behind her. Outside, she embodies everything a young lady of Society should - and she is bored of it, and secretly plotting on how to extricate herself from the boring merry go round of Society. She hits on a plan to ruin herself - enough to give herself an out of Society, but not enough to ruin her family or the prospects of her sister. To enact her plan, she engages the services of her old childhood friend, Theodore, the Earl of Winslow.

Theo is a young man about town and rake enjoying his best bachelor life, with no plans of wedding. He is stunned when Hetty, whom he has not seen since they were children, invades his home and wreaks havoc on his life like a storm, engaging him in a brash plan to lightly ruin her. He is the perfect person because of their friendship, and his reputation as a notorious rake. No one would consider Hetty an appropriate marriage prospect if she is gallivanting with the likes of Theo Winslow, and behaving and dressing in a less than lady-like manner!

But alas, her plans go awry when instead of being brought low by the association, she is somehow boosted up in the esteem of Society and is suddenly desirable to all as the Diamond of the Season!

This is fun, with vibrant characters, humour, and witty, sarcastic dialogue that I thoroughly enjoyed. Theodore, despite being a rake and her childhood friend, finds himself inconveniently falling for Hetty and the force of her personality. But he is stymied by her desire to become a spinster, and when they find themselves forced to declare a betrothal, he finds himself hoping to persuade to make it a real one, rather than a sham she hopes to cry off of.

Thoroughly enjoyable and I look forward to seeing what happens to the rest of the Tolliver siblings.

Regency Era Fake Dating??? Say LESS.
I honestly wish I could go back and experience this book for the very first time again—I LOVED it. I’m a total Bridgerton fanatic, but this book was even better! From the moment I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading it cover to cover the day after I received my ARC.
Hetty and Theo’s story gave me everything I want in a romance: sharp banter, that delicious slow-burn realisation of love, and wow, there was definitely some spice. I loved Theo showing Hetty that the marital bed does not, in fact result in a man suffocating a woman
The supporting cast were just as wonderful, each adding their own personality and laugh-out-loud moments. I’m already desperate to read the upcoming stories about Hetty’s sisters.
This book genuinely made me laugh out loud. Hetty’s wit and humour brought such a refreshing twist to the typical Regency heroine, and her mischievous taste for scandal was both hilarious and endearing—almost as entertaining as her wonderfully chaotic family. Lady Tolliver especially stole my heart; her “poor beleaguered nerves,” dramatic swooning, and touch of scheming made every scene she was in hilariously delightful.
Friends to lovers, fake dating, AND a slow-burn romance all in one book? Utterly delicious and delightfully scandalous—a tale for the Ton. Theo’s rakish charm was impossible to resist, and the moment he realised his feelings for Hetty… I was absolutely ruined.

Some of my favourite quotes:

“ Oh, do let’s embroider this moment on a sampler. ‘We were not kissing; we were merely standing very closely and breathing each other’s air in a most conversational fashion.” - Georgie Tolliver

“Ah yes. Love at the breakfast table. Very continental.” - Lord Tolliver

I need a physical copy of this the second it’s released (and please let there be a special edition—fingers crossed!). I’ve already been telling my friends about this book, I just loved it so much. Undoubtably a 5 star read for me!

A Regency romcom, friends to lovers and a scandalous duel thrown in for good measure - welcome to A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin.

Henrietta is the oldest of five daughters. Scandalously, this is her second Season in polite society since her debut and she remains unmarried. Not that she is worried about that - on the contrary, she’s determined to stay that way.

With the help of childhood friend Theodore, Hetty sets out to ruin her reputation…but their plans keep backfiring. Before they know what has happened, Hetty is declared Diamond of the Season and they somehow accidentally wind up engaged. They must extricate themselves before they find themselves making vows at the altar…unless, of course, they actually *want* the marriage to go ahead.

This book was an absolute riot. Now, you might be thinking ‘Regency…five daughters…sounds very much like P&P…’ - and you’d be right. The book doesn’t shy away from the similarities - in fact, I’d argue it’s the whole point. It isn’t a retelling by any means. It’s how Austen would write if she was writing now.

This is especially true when it comes to intimacy. The scenes take into account what a young woman would/wouldn’t know about sex, giving the opportunity to write a realistic innocent/experienced scene. The setup is the norm for the time, rather than a result of the woman being sheltered. It is slow burn and open door - another way this book is *not* like Austen.

This is the first book in a new series (The Trouble with the Tollivers), where each book will focus on a different sister. I loved the wit and banter in this story, and how things frequently would spiral out of control into total madness. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series. Fans of Bridgerton and other Regency romance will enjoy this

🎀This was an absolute treat of a novel. Described as a Regency Romcom with banter, bedlam, sin and scandal, it was all of that and so much more.
Fake dating, friends to lovers and a slow burn romance that will have you swooning and reaching for the vinaigrette to inhale!

Henrietta Tolliver is the oldest of five sisters. A lady with a mind of her own and a plan for her future which does not include marriage. Her mother on the other hand is desperate to marry her off and is forcing her to find a husband in the upcoming season. Avoiding this by any means necessary Hetty devises a plan to cause ‘mild ruination’ and scandal to make her ‘wholly unmarriagable’ and deter potential suitors. Enlisting the help of her childhood friend and fellow mischief maker Theo, The Earl of Langley, with his rakish charm and questionable reputation they set about putting the plan in to motion. What ensues is absolute carnage, hilarious consequences and plans going completely sideways ~ becoming Diamond of the Season for one. Brawls, an accidental shooting, and gowns so low cut the pompous ton don’t know where to avert their eyes!

The Tolliver family members are completely chaotic and utterly fabulous. My favourite being Lord Tolliver, mostly oblivious to his surroundings but comes out with the funniest quips.

I don’t want this review to contain any spoilers, the story is so full of quick witted banter but certain ‘lessons in love’ shall we say, that Theo gives Hetty, being a proper lady and somewhat naive is just pure comedy gold.

💕I loved everything about this story and can’t wait for the next instalment. If you like the Regency era, Bridgerton vibes with more humour and scandal I recommend you give this book a read, you’ll be laughing throughout at all the riotous antics.

I thoroughly enjoyed this hilarious Regency romp by an author previously unknown to me, that had my laugh muscles working overtime. Samantha Blok delivers pun after pun, farcical moments and situational comedy packed with irony, witty dialogues, banter, pranks, and mishaps. The very well-written plot is well-paced, featuring childhood friends to lovers and fake engagement tropes, mild steam and a whole cast of very likable characters. I loved the chaotic Tolliver family and their interactions. Hetty and Theo are wonderful protagonists with a slow-burn romance who are perfectly suited to each other. She is witty, stubborn, spirited, and freedom-loving, and he is a carefree rake who transforms into a caring cinnamon roll hero over the course of the book. Their friendship and interactions feel natural and effortless.

Henrietta "Hetty" Tolliver, previously the epitome of a well-bred and virtuous young lady, is bored with the same old society events and rules. She doesn't want to get married either. To preserve her freedom, Hetty needs a scandal on her own terms, one that won't completely ruin her, but only make her unmarriageable. Who better to help her than her childhood friend and well-known rake Theo Winslow, Earl of Langley? But instead of the desired effect, she is crowned the new Diamond of the Season and is besieged by suitors. Worse still, Hetty and Theo are unwillingly caught in a compromising situation and are suddenly engaged against their will…

If you're looking for a fun-filled historical romance with laughs, heart and a little heat, you don’t want to miss this. I can’t wait for the next Tolliver story and their shenanigans!

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

The humor is the star here. From page 1, you get witticisms galore. The ton is a rather foolish construct if you think about it, and the season is basically a glorified marriage market, so why not have some fun at everyone’s expense? That’s what Hetty thinks anyway. Our FMC is determined to not participate, so she enlists her childhood friend, Theo, to help create a scandal so she can stay gloriously unwed. Of course, things go awry and sparks fly (of course!).

This definitely had a modern vibe to it, so historical purists be warned. While Hetty was determined to turn up her nose at marriage, it's probably her best option. Plus becoming “ruined” would easily ruin her sisters. But alas, we don’t get caught up in those prickly realities here. I’m glad the author chose to keep it frothy and light, as otherwise I’d feel a bit annoyed at Hetty’s tactics.

The romance was sweet, the banter was funny, and the family was (almost too?) outrageous. My one wish for this story would be a chance to go deeper into the characters. They both felt rather surface level to me. There was a lot of plot, many characters and humorous situations, but I was wanting more interiority, especially in the beginning, to really get inside Hetty and Theo’s heads to understand them better.

But, the story zips by so fast, I almost didn’t really care, and I was happy for our lovebirds in the end. Austen fans might leave wanting a bit more depth, but it’s definitely up the alley of anyone obsessed with Bridgerton. Good for a fun read.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Bored of being a proper lady, Miss Henrietta ‘Hetty’ Tolliver decides to engineer a ruinous scandal with the help of her childhood friend, the notorious flirt Theodore Winslow.

But their mock courtship backfires when, instead of ruin, Hetty is named Diamond of the Season. As their faux engagement starts to feel dangerously real, Hetty discovers the true danger isn't in scandal, but in accidentally falling in love.

Based on the blurb, I thought I knew what I was getting into, but this book was delightfully chaotic and had me laughing out loud. Coming from a large, noisy, and usually odd family myself, I couldn’t help but feel right at home in the Tolliver madness. Equal parts funny, ridiculous, and downright daft - perfect.

If you’ve watched or read Bridgerton, this book can at times feel a bit… extra. Honestly, it often felt like if Bridgerton and Wacky Races had a lovechild, it would be this book, in the best possible way.

Hetty, our FMC, is a gem. Imperious yet mischievous, determined to carve out her own life. And Theo? Our clueless Earl who really should’ve used his noggin and never let his childhood friend slip away.

Such an easy, happy, hilariously fun read, I can’t help but rate it highly. If you’re looking for chaotic, daft Regency hijinks with a MMC who falls first and worships his wife long before she becomes his wife, well then, this is your book.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ - delicious Regency chaos.

I haven’t laughed and smiled this much while reading a book in a long time! I even saved it under “Books I Love” so I can come back and reread it later. The sharp satire woven into the dialogue made it absolutely hilarious, and I honestly can’t wait for the rest of the series. Please don’t make us wait a whole year — though if that’s what it takes to produce something this good, I’ll happily be patient.

Yes, the author takes more than a few creative liberties with the Regency setting, but for me, it was completely worth it. It reminded me of Bridgerton — but funnier! I loved how the playful twists and modern touches served the story instead of distracting from it.

The story follows two lifelong friends, Hetty and Theo, from neighboring families who’ve spent their childhoods in constant mischief together. When Hetty reaches the age to “make a season” and find a husband, she enlists Theo’s help to ruin her reputation just enough to escape her mother’s designs. Theo, sarcastic, witty, and very much a rake-in-the-making, is the perfect co-conspirator. But as the saying goes, “life is what happens when you’re making plans,” and suddenly their mischievous scheme turns into something neither of them can ignore — love.

There are chapters I can’t think about without laughing all over again. I’m so grateful I had the chance to read this ARC — huge thanks to the author, BookSirens, and the publisher for this gem! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Miss Henrietta Tolliver is everything a proper young lady ought to be and she is utterly, mind-numbingly bored. If she must smile sweetly through one more pianoforte recital or suffer another dull dinner party spent discussing drainage, she might very well scream. Her solution is simple - she shall engineer a scandal so ruinous that no respectable gentleman would dare offer for her hand.

Theodore Winslow, the Earl of Langley, is her childhood friend, London’s most notorious flirt and precisely the sort of man foolish enough to help. Theo considers Hetty’s plan absurd... which makes it all the more irresistible. What begins as a mock courtship unravels in a most inconvenient fashion when Hetty is declared the Diamond of the Season, suitors flock by the dozen, and the gossip columns swoon over their tender romance. Somewhere between moonlit kisses, an accidental shooting and a faux engagement that refuses to remain pretend, Hetty discovers that the true danger is not in scandal… but in falling hopelessly, disastrously in love.

MY THOUGHTS
A fun and hilarious, Regency romance that will have you smiling at the pompous ton and secretly cheering for Hetty who is determined not to succumb to what society dictates. A sweet love story between childhood friends is a lovely element in this story. I love the banter between the characters and Hetty's family is crazy but loveable. Hopefully we'll learn more about what becomes of Hetty's sisters in future books! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is spectacular! It’s the perfect book to curl up in a blanket with a cup of coffee or tea while you giggle and squeal over the hilarity that is the Tolliver family.

I instantly fell in love with Hetty and all of her sisters! They are lively, loving, and prone to an abundance of mishaps.

Hetty is being forced into finding a husband, which she absolutely does not want, so she devises a scheme to cause a scandal. Theo….well I was instantly in love with him, as soon as you read it you’ll see why. 😉 He is her childhood best friend and the banter between them is quick witted and hilarious! The friendship to romance between them is both beautiful AND steamy. You should definitely have some pearls nearby to clutch when things get indecent. Their plan for scandal goes hilariously awry which led to many moments of concern on the part of my family when I was laughing aloud for no apparent reason.

I love the character and relationship development between them, it evolved so naturally. The writing and prose is stunning as always, I love how Samantha always makes me feel so absorbed into the story that it feels real. I cannot wait for the rest of the series! If you love Bridgerton vibes with a dose of laughter and a pinch of spice, this is for you!!

Samantha, you have my endless gratitude for this advanced copy, I shall be rereading this quite often.

This was a fantastic book! I loved the banter between characters, the chaotic hilarity of the Tolliver family (and the schemes and situations that went sideways), and adored the love story of Theo and Hetty.

Theo and Hetty used to be old friends, growing up together in the countryside, but reconnected though a scheme of Hetty’s. I appreciated that this wasn’t a second-chance romance, since they both considered it a platonic friendship years ago. In the current time, we got to see them comfortable with each other right away, but see deeper feelings develop over the course of the book, which I really enjoyed.

The entire storytelling was very smooth and comfortable, not forced. I loved that Hetty’s plans seemed logical and like they would work, but then went a little sideways, but were still salvageable (until they weren’t). The personalities of Theo and Hetty were a good match also - Theo always went along with her plans, and seemed unfazed by the happy chaos of her family.

Overall, this was a book I enjoyed immensely! I’m already looking forward to the next book in this series, or any other book this author writes! Thank you to BookSirens and the publisher for the free advanced copy, this is my honest and voluntary review.

What a delightful romp through the Ton!

Hetty is a headstrong young lady, the eldest of five sisters, with only Benedict as an older brother. Ben who is generally a bit of a stick in the mud.

The Tolliver family are a riot, a family full of big personalities who elicit real laughs out loud.
Hetty is in her second year on the marriage mart. Her mum is desperate to get her a husband, Hetty is desperate for a little bit of social ruin!
Enter Hetty’s best friend and infamous rake, Theodore Winslow, an Earl who is maybe just as much trouble as Hetty herself.
Can they get Hetty ruined just enough so she can live her life comfortably free of marriage and societal pressures? Or will that tricky little beast love rear its ugly head?

Samantha has a brilliant way with words, one second you are laughing out loud, the next raging at the preposterous notions of the regency era. Her clear research of this time period and her love for the world is evident in the story she has weaved. If you want whimsy, laughs and endless corsets with far too many clips and laces for the likes of Theodore Winslow, then you need to read this book!
Bring on the other girls (and undoubtedly Benedict’s) stories. In particular Lottie’s!!!!!

A most dreadful guide to ruin by Samantha Blok is a laugh out loud regency romance

We meet the whole Tolliver family and their menagerie in book one of this series but our main focus is eldest daughter Hetty and her relationship with childhood best friend, Theo, Earl of Langley.

Hetty is in her second Season and is adamant that she will not be marrying. So, she visits Theo, rake extraordinaire to form a plan of mild ruination! Simple?! No, not at all, Hetty's plan backfires and she's named diamond of the season and all attention is on her.

Chaos errupts and what starts as a ruse becomes very real, very quickly including their feelings for one another. Throw in a hen (yes, as in a live chicken), some meddling mamas and a brother (and a sister) hellbent on fighting a duel.

Will it end in disaster or delight?!

I fell in love with the whole family (and Theo of course), it was hilarious. There's a particular dinner scene which I read twice because it was so funny.

I've not read a regency romance in a little while. This was the perfect reintroduction! A 5* read. Thank you so much for the ARC.

A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin is out 4 October.

I had such a fun time with this book! Fake engagement romances are my catnip and Hetty and Theo pulled it off beautifully. The Tolliver sisters were hilarious too. I loved their humour and the way they bounced off each other, it really gave the story so much heart.

The romance was super satisfying. Even though there weren't heaps of steamy scenes (and it was a bit lighter than what I usually lean toward), the ones we did get were well-written and full of tension, fitting the story perfectly. The build-up between Hetty and Theo was so good, and when things finally sparked, it was absolutely worth the wait. Their chemistry carried the book, balancing sweet moments with laugh-out-loud exchanges.

The only reason I didn't round this up to a full five stars is that I secretly wanted just a touch more spice, but that's totally personal taste. The mix of humour, family bonds, and a wonderfully executed fake engagement made this such a satisfying read. I'm already looking forward to more from this series, especially if we get to spend more time with Jasper and the Tolliver sisters.

Already in the first chapter I found the main character Henrietta Tolliver, Hetty, charming and fun. Her family is colorful and filled with strong-willed girls who seem to want to make their own way in this world. Hetty seems to want that more than the others

As I read the book we meet Lord Langley, Theodore or Theo, Hetty’s childhood friend and if there is one thing I love it’s a childhood friends to lovers trope. Their relationship reminded me of Odette and Derek’s childhood friendship. and the song they sing, “This is my Idea” and how he almost jumps on the opportunity to help her ruin her reputation so she can stay unmarried until she feels ready to get married.

There is also this trend online called “if you see a woman yelling at me know I am where I want to be”. This was what Theo kept reminding me off as he on multiple occasions mentions that he likes teasing her to get a reaction from her.

It is a fun and light read, and if you like regency romance with chaos, banter that intrigues and amuses, fake ruin to romance, open-door-spice with playfulness.

Then you will enjoy this, I enjoyed it!

As someone who’s usually a dark romance girlie, I wasn’t expecting to fall this hard for a Regency rom-com, but A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin completely stole my heart.

This was an ARC read, and I enjoyed it immensely (even if life got in the way of me finishing and reviewing it sooner). Hetty Tolliver was such a refreshing heroine, witty, bold, and delightfully chaotic. Her determination to rebel against society’s expectations had me grinning from the start, and her “ruin myself with scandal” plan was gloriously unladylike in the best way possible.

The banter between Hetty and Theo was perfection, sharp, hilarious, and charged with that slow-burn chemistry that keeps you smiling the whole time. The mix of scandal, faux engagement, and genuine heart made this such a fun and cozy read.

And honestly? Samantha Blok could write the nutrition values on a cereal box and I’d still happily read it, her writing is just that good.

A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin is a riotous, heartwarming start to The Trouble with the Tollivers series, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the sisters get up to next!

Our cast of characters and future books:

Hetty, FMC & daughter of Lord and Lady Tolliver

Theodore Wilson, MMC, only child, best childhood friend of Hetty and Earl of Langley

Georgie, sister of Hetty

Lottie, sister of Hetty

Mari, sister of Hetty

Nell, sister of Hetty

Benedict (only son), brother of Hetty

Just finished reading it and fell in love with Theo and Hetty!

Samantha Blok is a new-to-me author, who blew me away by her writing style, well-developed characters, finely tuned world building and sweet and touching moments that revealed the characters inner thoughts and feelings to the reader. I was very busy highlighting whole sections, in my Kindle, that were beautifully written. But this story is not short on laughs, giggles and mischief and mishaps from the Tolliver family.

There are quite a few little asides (where the author whispers to the reader) in the story and it was unexpected and thoroughly enjoyable just like the book!! And the epilogue… chef’s kiss, perfection!

I am waiting with bating breath for Georgie and Lottie’s (Hetty’s sisters) story.

I am now a huge fan of Ms Blok’s and will be reading her books from now on!!!

"A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin" is wonderful, charming, and absolutely delightful! I have enjoyed reading this book so very much. The characters feel three-dimensional and like real people. They are lovable! I've enjoyed meeting and getting to know them. The speed of the plot is perfect, the writing style is smooth, the romance is sweet, swoony, and has the perfect level of angst. The setting, characters, clothing, locations, and all of the details are described with such clarity which makes it easy for the reader to envision what is happening in the story. This author has done great work crafting these characters and their story. The wit and humor in this book is amazing! This story and its characters will make you smile and laugh and will provide you with feelings of absolute bookish joy! As much as I love Bridgerton, "A Most Dreadful Guide to Ruin" most certainly gives it a run for its money. Watch out Julia Quinn there is a new lady in town! A dazzling voice in Regency romance. 5 stars!

Thank you very much to the author for the wonderful opportunity of being a part of her ARC Team and for providing me with a digital copy to read and review honestly.

A MOST DREADFUL GUIDE TO RUIN
by Samantha Blok
Not yet published
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My thoughts:
This Regency romance contains a touch of Bridgerton aura and a dash of Pride and Prejudice vibes.
🌸🌺
Samantha Blok skillfully portrays her characters with quick-witted banter and humour. The witty repartee between the Tolliver family members kept me laughing throughout the entire book.
🌸🌺
I particularly loved how she addresses and engages the reader from time to time:
“At this juncture, the author must confess a growing impatience with the predictability of such interruptions and resolve to exercise a touch more creativity before the next inevitable arrival.”
🌸🌺
The characters are well developed; my personal favourites being Mrs Tolliver who is hell bent on marrying off Hetty at all costs, and Mr Tolliver, who provides a clever counter balance with his oblivious bonhomie.
🌸🌺
Thank you @samanthablok.author for my ARC. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to read the next installment of The Trouble With the Tollivers!
