Ballad of the Blade

Magic is dead.

The Order made sure of that. They gathered it up, and what they couldn’t destroy, they hid. Now, noble houses squabble over the realm, civil unrest smolders in the east, slavery and injustice run rampant, all while mankind hides behind their two-faced gods.

However, the truth is, magic isn’t dead. It’s just been sleeping, and I intend to wake it.

Under the light of a sinister moon:

A promising initiate struggles to conform in an organization that wants to exterminate the very magic running in his blood. A hired assassin fights to stay one step ahead of shadows, betrayals, and past mistakes. A musician in over his head tries desperately to trade debt from one group of killers to another. A slave of blood and sand claws his way toward freedom, one corpse at a time. An irreverent Justiseer struggles with a particularly obstinate severed head. A man wakes with no memory, only to discover a community with problems far greater than his amnesia.

Each of them is forced to question if magic truly is dead and wonder…

Should it be?

“Then what? Dont get me wrong — I’m pretty happy to ride off into the sunset if it’s the only plan where I don’t end up dead.”

this book was so much fun, i went into it expecting a quick pace, bloodshed and plenty of action.. safe to say it completely delivered on all of those things. i was warned that there would be a lot of POVs, but i prefer multiple POVs anyways and i think the author did a great job balancing everyone. there wasn’t a time where i couldn’t tell who was who, because each person felt completely distinct. my favorite characters are 100% Tanya, Cross and Scarlett, but i also have the biggest soft spot for chaotic David and all of his (many) antics.

“They could never replace the one he’d lost, but perhaps they could be a new one— a family.. and one not born into the bonds of slavery.”

it surprised me how attached i grew to certain characters, it got to a point where i didn’t want the book to end cause i knew that would mean i’d have to leave them eventually. the found family in here when it came to Cross and how Tanya and David kept teaching him new words had me in my feels. Scarlett also had the most interesting arc in my opinion, i adored her moose Roland too. i also enjoyed getting the flip side of things by way of Gerard and Nathan. the storyline came together so smoothly in the last section with all the little connections falling into place. i think the plot will only get more intriguing from here. i was honestly staring at the wall when i finished it.. i can’t wait for book two.

many thanks to NetGalley and once again, to the author Andrew for sending me the physical arc copies. all opinions are my own.

Where do I even begin?

Ballad of the Blade isn’t like anything I’ve read in a really long time. It follows multiple characters in the same world as they battle the struggles, injustices, and unknown. Ballad of the Blade is fast paced and the mystery of it all drew me in from the start. I can truly say I was surprised as pieces started to come together in the book. As someone who can usually predict the outcome of novels, I wasn’t able to predict where a lot of this book was going and what was going to happen next.

On top of all of that, it was really well written. I found myself immersed in the world and never got pulled out due to the writing style or dialogue. It was a bit confusing keeping track of the multiple POV’s at first, but that was due to my brain and nothing to do with the writing style.

If you are a fan of The Witcher, you might like Ballad of the Blade.

I truly think this is going to be one of the next high fantasy internet sensations!

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrew for an ARC of Ballad of the Blade!

Ballad of the Blade is my new obsession. The storytelling is beyond amazing. They way each characters story weaves into the next characters is great. The characters are well developed and have their own distinctive personalities, which are easy to tell apart. The twists and turns will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Ballad of the Blade is going to rival ACOTAR, TOG, and GOT. This is a must-read for lovers of fantasy.

From the second I started reading this one, I was already invested, and that feeling just kept on going until (and past!) the end. With a wide variety of characters and storylines that slowly but surely converge, there were so many things to love.

The world is deep and full of detail. There are so many elements that make the setting feel lived-in and realistic; this is a world with a history that didn’t just come into existence at the start of this story.

This is a book where multiple narrators are not only necessary, but where those perspectives make the story something great. All the characters had a distinct voice, including those who only had one chapter to narrate. The prose is distinct, often beautiful, and calibrated for maximum emotional impact, while the dialogue sounds natural and only makes it that much easier to get invested in the characters.

Speaking of, there’s a character for everyone... and also just all of the characters for me. Cynical bounty hunter? Snarky disaster bard? Animal- and science-loving hermit? And those are just a few of the archetypes that appeal to me personally; I couldn’t help but love all the narrators. It’s impossible for me to pick a favorite because I got so attached to all of them. There are so many meaningful character arcs and relationship developments.

And plotwise, there’s so much happening, but everything comes together so smoothly at the end while leaving room to wonder what comes next. Some of the twists I anticipated but still hit like a ton of bricks. Others hit like an unexpected ton of bricks. I am still not over that ending.

My only complaint is that now I have to wait to see what happens next.

Thanks to Andrew Merritt for letting me be part of the team for this book!

Really enjoyed this one! The story moves fast with plenty of action, but it also takes time to build up the characters so you actually care about what happens to them. The world feels lived-in without getting bogged down in too much detail, and the writing has a nice flow that makes it easy to keep turning the pages. If you’re into fantasy with strong characters and some lyrical touches, definitely worth checking out.

Ballad of the Blade
by Andrew P Meritt
The Order wanted everyone to believe that magic is dead. A group of unlikely individuals will embark on a journey to find out if it's true.
This book is everything I want in my fantasy books. It starts off with a bang and doesn't let up until the end. It's violent, dark, brutal and mysterious and I loved every minute of it..
There is a select few authors I will read anything they put out and Andrew P Meritt has made that list. Doing that with a debut novel is incredible.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrew P Meritt for the opportunity to read this book in return for any honest review.

4.25 ⭐️ I LOVED this book. I'm now broken, but I loved it. I am a sucker for a good multy POV book, and this one delivered. The writing is of good quality, and I didn't get lost in the different POVs. I also need good character development in my high fantasies, and I was not disappointed. I got really attached, and I can't wait to see what happens to in the next book of the series. I got a little bit lost in the timeline at times, but overall, it was pretty clear. I would strongly recommend this book.

Overview: The Order of Appropriate Magic has dedicated thousands of years to destroying magic. And anything they couldn't destroy, they hid, convincing the realm that magic was dead.

Now: a promising initiate who asks too many questions, a hired assassin who cannot trust anyone, a bard in terrible debt, a scholar hiding from society, a man with no memory of who he is, an irreverent bounty hunter and a slave gladiator fighting for his freedom all find themselves thinking the same questions.

Is magic truly dead?

My thoughts: Truthfully, this took a while to warm into. But once it got underway, there was no putting it down!

There are so many POVs to get your head around straight away. The story, location, characters and action jump very rapidly - just let the story sweep you up and go along for the ride. The world is rich and vibrant (for all the scum and villainy humans seem to turn it into). So many details that just made everything seem expansive yet familiar - I adored the money system, which is an odd phrase, but you'll understand.

Once you get a solid grasp on who everyone is.... I don't want to say this is a fun book. It has really humorous parts and great banter. But it is gutwrenching and heartbreaking. It's beautifully written, so you fall in love with the prose just as much as the characters. And then both betray you.

This book is VIOLENT with a capital V. Every chapter involves bloodshed or death, and no one is spared. This is not a 'happily ever after' tale - to quote The Simpsons:
"Is this a happy ending or a sad ending?"
"It's an ending, that's enough."

My only critique is that there were so many stories to establish and characters to follow that it felt like it took a long time to get to the climax and action. And once there, I wanted more, but instead it eased off (as much as this book can ease off) and left everything primed for the next book, which, in all fairness, is a tactic I cannot hold against the author. There were some characters that I felt the POVs, while enriching and rounding out the world, could have been sacrificed to simply get more time elsewhere at the end.

Don't read this book if you're feeling fragile or PMSing. Or maybe do if you need a good cry or want to live vicariously through those causing bodily harm in excruciating detail. There's something for everyone. Just don't get attached.

Thank you to NetGalley and Meritt for the ARC copy.

The Ballad of the Blade lays the groundwork for what feels like the beginning of a compelling series. The worldbuilding is immersive and detailed. The simultaneous plots are both engaging in their own right, and while the narratives don't intertwine seamlessly, they still provide a satisfying breadth of perspective and potential for future convergence.
The cast of characters is a major strength. Each one is dynamic and vividly written. The story is perfectly balanced between action, mystery, and a surprising amount of humor—sharp, clever, and often perfectly timed. That levity makes the darker moments more striking, and the story overall more enjoyable.
The book’s heart, voice, and ambition make it a worthwhile read. I’m eager to see how the threads come together in potential future installments.

Ballad of the Blade is a gripping dive into dark fantasy—one that blends morally ambiguous characters, a richly layered world, and pulse-pounding intrigue. The novel introduces a cast so vividly drawn that it's easy to find someone to root for, even when they’re far from heroic. An assassin haunted by shadows, a debt-ridden bard, and a gladiator bound by chains—all converge in a realm where magic is feared, structures are crumbling, and survival hinges on wit as much as strength.
One of the book’s standout qualities is its ability to deliver a compelling narrative from the very first page. Readers describe it as so engaging that they were drawn into page-turning sessions and reluctant to stop. Meritt’s use of multiple points of view enhances the sense of an epic tapestry weaving together disparate threads into a unified journey. Though at first the POV-switching unsettles, the distinctiveness of each voice quickly brings clarity and immersion.
The world-building is revealed gradually and effectively, each chapter folding more complexity into the setting and the hidden magic running underneath its surface . If you're drawn to dark fantasy with gothic undertones—featuring shadowy conspiracies, chilling monsters, and emotional stakes—Ballad of the Blade delivers in spades
At times, the sheer number of characters and shifting perspectives can feel overwhelming or dilute narrative focus. One reviewer reflected that the story sometimes lacks a cohesive “red line,” making it feel like a crowded tapestry without a single thread to follow. However, that complexity is also part of the novel’s strength—for readers who savor layered storytelling, the payoff is worth the effort.
Final Thoughts

Ballad of the Blade is an electrifying introduction to Andrew P. Meritt’s Serenade of Smoke series, brimming with morally gray protagonists, dark magic, and ruthless intrigue. Its narrative structure may demand patience, but the worldbuilding, action, and emotional depth more than compensate.

I’m happy to award it four stars—a darkly enchanting fantasy that sets up anticipation and excitement for Book Two.

What a fantastic read! Andrew really smashed it with this book!

From page one I was sucked into a wild ride that I could not have expected and did not want to end. I didn't see where we were going at all the entire story, and that was awesome. There is mystery, struggle, riddles (love it), humour, and personal growth.
The Trickster... Scarlett... Tanya... Cross and Gerard are my personal favourites.

Will you enjoy Ballad of the Blade? My favourite reads are the Red Rising series, Scythe series, and Warhammer (Dan Abnett). Now also Ballad of the Blade.

Thank you Andrew, for a brilliant treat and for the chance to read and review it! I thoroughly enjoyed it, have ordered my copy, and can't wait for the next!

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the free ARC in exchange for a review.

I loved this new fantasy novel! The different perspectives kept the plot engaging and interesting, and allowed me to connect with multiple characters. I was saddened by some of what happened in the ending but am really looking forward to reading the next one!

A couple of the chapters were from the perspective of some side characters and seemed unnecessary in the grand scheme of things, but they were still entertaining to read through. Also, this book is very violent and gory, which I don’t normally enjoy, but the fight scenes were really well-written.

I enjoyed Tanya’s character a lot and hope that there are more women characters in the next novel. I also really liked the animal characters and hope there are more! Furthermore, the concept of three moons and their unique characteristics was creative and intriguing.

Overall, this novel has become one of my favorites and I highly recommend it to fantasy fans!

I have been reading fantasy for many, many years (sigh). It was wonderful to start a new book, and not "know", within a chapter or two, exactly what sort of a story I was reading and where it was going to go. Instead, I was pulled slowly into the world, and the characters, but every time I started to get comfortable in predicting what was going to happen, well, let's just say it didn't.

Meritt has created a very interesting world that remains, even after finishing the first book, a mystery. Obviously, things have happened in the past in this world but, although there are hints and clues, it stays an enigma. Clearly, things are changing now in the world but the reader, and the characters, can't really see this.

The story is told from the perspective of various characters. There is a character for every sort of reader. I have my favorite and least liked but I will not mention names; other readers can decide for themselves.

I am looking forward to learning more about the history of this world, discovering how it is changing (what is going on), and seeing how the various characters will react (if they remain alive, of course). I definitely want to know if my theory about one character is true.

So I hope I will not have to wait too long for the second book!

woah. WOAH. this book was not at all what i expected going into it and i loved every second of it. there are six distinct povs and at times i had to go back and remind myself who was who but it is SO worth it when it clicks into place. the way each story is so unique within the same world but also. when to weave into the others’ was done so brilliantly.

this world is dark, gritty, and gory. it’s wonderful. seriously. i was hooked from the start and found myself rooting and falling for so many of these characters. this is epic fantasy at its finest. i would’ve loved more on the religion(s) of the world and how it all relates to the magic system. i’m really excited for more of that hopefully in the future. i’m very grateful to have received this arc.

**ARC READ**

While the OAM would love to have everyone believe that magic is dead and/or never existed, the truth is it is simply sleeping under a trio of moons. An intriguing cast of characters will begin to question everything around them, including the existence of magic but will they find the answers they seek before it's too late?

What a story!! I loved the varying story lines that were still kept straight and interesting. I never got bored reading anyone's story line. A lot of laughter (thank you David), some shock, some tears, and a lot of fascination wrapped up my feelings toward this book and I will be looking forward to book 2!!

I've been looking for a story to devastate me for a while. This book promised it and fully delivered. Throw in some hilarious banter and plenty of graphic gore, and this book was perfection.

The writing style was refreshingly unique as we follow multiple different characters going through their own separate struggles before they start to cross each others paths and their journeys become intertwined.

Even after some of the characters start to adventure together there are still different storylines happening at the same time and each chapter jumps to a different story which kept me totally hooked and made it hard to put down.

Most of the storylines had conclusions, but a couple have been left open ended to pave the way for book two, and I can't wait to read it.

A gripping dark fantasy that weaves together multiple perspectives in a world where survival, revenge, and freedom drive every choice. The author proves no character is safe, even ones you've grown to love, creating tension in every confrontation. While the rich world-building and violent action sequences draws you in, it's the complex relationships between characters like Tanya, David, and Cross that truly shine. The story builds its mysteries carefully, paying them off with satisfying twists while exploring how people hold onto their humanity in the face of impossible choices.

I absolutely loved this book! If you're into character-driven dark fantasy where nobody's purely good or evil, definitely give this one a shot.

4.7/5

This is not my usual but, from the beginning it kept pulling me into it further. There have been a few humorous jokes in the dialogue that had me laughing and lingering the entire day that really kept me coming back because of the character. There are multiple characters to follow along with and at some point they come back together. I found it most intriguing about the moons and what more they could do; following along with the story line, it made sense. This storyline is in no way predictable the moment you think you know what is going to happen, it switches up; I love it. The world building is top tier, dialogue never dry, and the descriptive writing is all the way there. I felt as if I was right in front of the scenes that unfolded. I want another book. I feel like I’m no longer a dark fantasy virgin anymore.

Thank you NetGalley and mostly Andrew for this read. Keep going. 🫶🏽

Ballad of the Blade was my first real step into grimdark, since I usually stick with more traditional fantasy, and it definitely threw me in headfirst. The book is violent, gory, and unflinching, but it also has a richness to the world and characters that kept me turning pages. The ending caught me completely off guard in the best way— I loved that I couldn’t guess what came next. That said, I’d recommend readers check the trigger warnings beforehand, because this isn’t a gentle read.

I love and prefer multi-POV style books. I enjoyed seeing the story unfold through different characters, which made the world feel layered and alive. The setting itself was dark and brutal but never dull and kept me turning the page.

If I had one critique, it would be the romance elements. They felt a little rushed for my taste (I am a slow burn girl through and through), and I think they could have added more weight if given more space. I also sometimes wished the POV chapters lingered longer on certain characters before moving on.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed the experience. As someone new to grimdark, it was intense but rewarding, with a world and cast that stayed with me even after finishing. If you’re looking to step into something darker and don’t mind a bit (okay, a lot) of blood and grit, this one is well worth the read.

A brutal and enthralling tale of adventure, freedom, and desolation following six unlikely misfits as they try to uncover the mysteries of the world. No one is safe.

After the War of Iron and Blood, the OAM have set out to destroy and confine any signs of magic throughout the realm. Meanwhile, the nation of Darin is filled with crime, slavery, and secrets taken to the grave.

Enter an assassin, a slave, a bard, a bounty hunter, a moose lover, and an amnesiac.

To these six strangers, magic no longer exists. The OAM is a sham meant to load their pockets with expenses ripped from the townspeople. The question is: Could they be wrong, and if they are, what does that mean for their world...?

Let me start off by saying: Andrew P. Meritt author does a phenomenal job of incorporating the worldbuilding into this novel. He has constructed a pantheon of thirteen gods, thirteen hells, and taken the time to reference the war that started the world on this path so many years ago. The Divide that separates Darin from the opposing nation of Terra across the open waters is the single-most sought out obstacle that has each character trying to find ways to get there, and the vulnerability each character displays in their most pressing moments is surreal and heart wrenching, to say the least.

The characters that absolutely stole my heart would have to be David and Cross. David has a way of bringing a smile to my face, be it his charismatic and flirty persona or the (very) creative curses he manages to spit at the slightest inconvenience. As for Cross, he was simply a giant teddy bear who could rip you apart in less than two seconds flat, but would rather sit there and learn fancy words he’d never heard of before.

Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and daunting read that had me laughing, screaming, kicking my feet, and sobbing myself into nausea. The information found throughout the novel as a whole is enticing and edge-of-your-seat, nail-bitingly wonderful! If you are a fan of novels such as Game of Thrones, this might just be your cup of tea (warning: you know what happens in GoT. No one is safe. Guts are everywhere. I mean it. Proceed with caution).

Ballad of the Blade was a thrilling read! I was fully engaged from start to finished. Andrew Meritt's characters are each unique and brought this dark fantasy to life.
I can't pick just one favorite character, they each have their own voice and quirks that make them relatable and lovable.
Every battle was an immersive experience where I felt every hit and dodge of the characters, their heartbreak was my heartbreak, and I laughed right alongside them. The character development and worldbuilding were fantastic, and I was enthralled by how complex of a plot Meritt crafted.
I truly cannot wait for the second installment to follow these characters on their journeys to new lands.

Ballad of the Blade was an incredible, dark high fantasy read. I was initially intrigued by the large cast and multi-character POV as well as the promise of a dark and not completely happy ending.

I was hooked from chapter one. Every character had a purpose and a goal that gave the plot momentum, as well as their own distinct voices that gave the story depth. The pacing of this entire book was fantastic, especially during fight scenes. I felt the impact of each dodge and hit, every heartbreak, every relaxed moment. And I was immersed into every scene.

Full of gritty action, laughter, edge of your seat daring escapes, and a bit of heartbreak, I am eagerly anticipating the second installment of this series and cannot wait to continue following the characters on their journey to new lands.

If you’re looking for a quick paced fantasy read that sucks you into another world this is just the right book. I’ll warn you now before jumping in. The world is crafted and made to reel you in, and attach you to a bunch of characters and the journeys once their story is flipped upside down.
The fantasy isn’t romantic and sweet, it’s dark and the stakes are raised with every chapter. The author takes you through a whirlwind of perspectives and intertwines it with adventure. You might begin rooting for the heroes just to find out they’re the villains. The line between good and evil blurs, when you get the perspective of each character, they grow on you and with the story. Most plots are bumpy but the catastrophic twists and turns of the plot to “Ballad of the Blade” makes you wonder if the world is spinning or if it’s just you. If you are looking for a good read, this book is not for the weak stomached, or the ones looking for a happy ending. This is a tragedy, but it’s one worth reading, and the note you close the book on will leave you wanting more. - Hamann

An absolute gem from an up-and-coming author! You'll laugh, cry, and probably throw the book across the room in frustration a time or two. The multi-POV seemed intimidating for the first couple of chapters, but Andrew did an AMAZING job at making sure each character had a unique voice, so much so that after a while I didn't need to remind myself who's chapter it was, I could just tell by the character voice!

I'm usually a reader of 'relaxing' fantasy, and while this book was anything but relaxing (like I said, I almost threw the book a few times) it is one of the best new books I've read in a very long time. I absolutely could not put it down. The whole story seemed believable and realistic. Even being set in a fantasy world full of magic, I felt like the characters were people I could have known in real life.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Please do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Ballad of the Blade, and keep your eye out for the sequel!

This tale captures everything great about modern fantasy and pulls its audience into the adventure from the very first page. The multi-perspective narrative keeps you guessing about whose stories will cross and who you should root for once they do. The writing is fun and easy to get into while still carrying plenty of substance. Attention to realistic detail stands out for the genre and makes you care about the characters in unique ways. When they stop to rest or eat or reflect on their actions, they feel very human, even while the writing never loses its momentum. This is a story for those who love the creative brutality that fantasy offers but also want deep and varied characters living in a complex world.
