Inside Silence

Rate this book
Savannah (Savvy) Colter is not easily overwhelmed, which is a good thing, since she is the sheriff of Edwards County. It’s rare to find someone her age— a woman to boot—carrying such responsibility, but over the years, Savvy has more than proven herself worthy of the position…to most.

However, when in a matter of a few weeks an old flame resurfaces in Silence, and two particularly violent murders land on her desk, her steady and predictable life becomes a little much to handle.

New full-time single parent, Nate Gaines, reluctantly returns to his hometown, Silence, to offer his teenage daughter some much-needed stability. As a contractor he can work anywhere, and it’s not like he left a particularly fulfilling life behind, but he’s not too sure how much work he’s going to get here.

Although, some of the changes he encounters in Silence are a surprise. The most shocking one is seeing the woman he once craved like air, now wearing the sheriff’s badge he so despises.

Coming home is definitely not turning out the way he’d envisioned. Especially when a sudden crime spree has the law knocking on his door…again.

I love it when an author creates a town that I want to instantly move to. The scenery, the people... I enjoyed it all. I'm also a sucker for a single dad romance. I loved Savvy and Nate. Second chance romances aren't my favorite but I admit this is the kind I do enjoy only because Nate had no choice but to walk away the first time. Overall, I loved Inside Silence and I'm looking forward to more in the series.

I absolutely loved this book! Ms. Barker has an incredible way of writing strong, capable women who still feel deeply human, and Savannah “Savvy” Colter is a perfect example. I admired her grit and quiet vulnerability, how she shouldered so much responsibility yet still allowed herself to feel. And Nate! Steady, grounded, protective without being overbearing was exactly the kind of hero I will always fall for. Their history added emotional weight to the story, and every interaction between them had a spark of something unfinished finally finding its moment.

What I love most about this book was the balance between realistic romance with mature characters, small town charm, and a suspense plot that actually kept me guessing. The danger felt real, the emotions even more so, and the pacing never let up. It’s heartfelt, tense, and deeply satisfying, reminding me why this is a one click author for me every time.

This is the second book in this series. You can read them as standalone books but I think they are better read in order. This book is starts about 2 years after the first one ends. Savvy is sheriff and there has been a big murder in their small sleepy town. Then there is the fact that the boy, Nate she was in love with when she was in high school is back. He just up and left town. He is back 15 years later with is 14 years old daughter in tow. There is more to why he left town than Savvy knows. Will they be able to have a second chance. When another murder happens Savvy will need to figure if they are connected or not. Is there a killer in town? Is the killer someone passing through or is it someone far closer than anyone could imagine? Savvy will have to face several difficult personal things in this book as well as some hard decisions at work. This book was a fantastic read. I was pleasantly happy that I couldn't guess the bad guy super early in the book. I had some guess or feelings about who it could be but wasn't sure. Nate is came back to the town he grew up for his daughter but he wasn't prepared for how it would affect him. The things it would bring up for him. This is a great series and I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Fantastic job Freya.

The hits just keep coming for Savvy, & you can’t help but empathize with every blow she takes. Her grit & determination command admiration, proving her strength runs deep. Then Nate storms in, steady, strong, & every bit her match, sparking a dynamic that crackles with chemistry & heart. The danger & suspense grip you in a chokehold, while the surrounding characters bring levity, laughter, & unwavering support to a stellar plot. Glimpses of the team’s growth hint at more adventures to come, making this an emotional, fast-paced, & utterly addictive read.

This one is a hot mess all around. So many secrets came out and it was intriguing how many of them were connected one way or another. I was glad that bad things from Nate and Savvy's past was exposed, also glad that those hurts were healed. The two of them are good together and you know they are going to be solid this second time around. I also think that Savvy's work life will be so much better now that the dead weight isn't around any more and the people that are there want to be there. Good news all around at the end for everyone.

The Badge and the Broken: A High-Stakes Second Chance for Two Adults With Too Much History.

For those of us who appreciate a romance where the characters have actually lived some life and carry the scars and wisdom that enrich a relationship, Freya Barker is a must-read, and Inside Silence is no exception. This book takes the angsty premise of a second-chance romance and embeds it deep within a gritty, high-stakes romantic suspense setting.

We meet Savannah (Savvy) Colter, a woman who has earned her powerful role as County Sheriff. She's competent, steady, and exactly the kind of strong heroine we love. Yet, her carefully constructed life is shattered not just by two violent murders, but by the unwelcome, chaotic return of her "old flame," Nate Gaines.

Nate's situation is immediately complex and deeply sympathetic: a new full-time single parent desperately seeking stability for his teenage daughter. But Nate's baggage is heavy; he despises the badge Savvy wears, and his history means the law is knocking on his door...again. This is not a fluffy reunion. It’s a collision.

What makes this story compelling for an adult-focused reader is the immense, dual pressure on both characters:

Savvy must find the killer while compartmentalizing the intense pull toward the man who once "craved her like air," even as he becomes a person of interest in a crime spree.

Nate must confront his past, swallowing his contempt for law enforcement, and realize that the stability he seeks might only come by trusting the very woman whose job he despises.

This is a story about the hard work of rekindled love, where old passions meet new realities and deep-seated grudges. If you appreciate a narrative where the emotional stakes are as high as the suspense, and where bruised but capable characters fight to earn their slice of happy, you'll be captivated by this tense, heartfelt journey back to the small town of Silence.

This is an OK read, but not my favorite. When the series started, it seemed it would have more mature characters. Instead the leads are in their 30s. I'm still grateful for that!

There was a good bit of action. However it was fairly repetitive. The FMC is a strong character. The MMC was interesting as well, with a good backstory.

There could have been more spice, and FB used to write a lot hotter stuff. Not sure what's up with that.

Two things that were problematic to me. One was the FMC's father. It wasn't easy to choke down the things he did. So no smiles for that. Second, FB can't help herself and has to add a surprise pregnancy in almost everything she writes. I'll never understand why authors love this trope so much. Also, the pregnancy has to happen even though the FMC diligently uses birth control. It's like magic. (struggling not to vomit here)

Lastly, I didn't really get the surprise bad guy. He literally came out of nowhere in the last few pages. That seemed like a pretty odd choice.

Overall, FB is a good writer. I'd just like to see better from her because she's written much better. And give up the senseless, childish pregnancy trope.

4.25stars—INSIDE SILENCE is the second instalment in Freya Barker’s contemporary, adult SILENCE romantic suspense series focusing on the small town of Silence Washington. This is Silence sheriff Savannah (Savvy) Colter, and single father/ handy man Nate Gaines’ story line. INSIDE SILENCE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from several first person perspectives including Savvy and Nate INSIDE SILENCE follows in the wake of the arrival and return of the prodigal bad boy Nate Gaines. Fifteen years earlier, Nate Gaines and Savvy Colter were an item but Nate’s life was about to spiral out of control, and Savvy was left with a broken heart. Fast forward to present day Nate has returned to Silence Washington with his fourteen year old daughter Tatum in tow, looking for a fresh start in a town unwilling to forgive or forget but Silence is about to become a proverbial hotbed of crime, and our hero will be the focus of an investigation, and a victim as well. As Sheriff Savvy Colter opens her heart to the possibility of a second chance, a series of murders and missing people threatens Savvy’s long hard fight to remain in control.

The world building follows several paths including Nate Gaines’ less than welcome home. Guilty by association, accused of a crime he did not commit, Nate finds himself on the outside looking in wherever he goes. Hoping to reconnect with Savvy, Nate must come to terms with the past and present, as the people of Silence refuse to let go. Savvy is struggling with the investigation and murders but with each successive clue she is no closer to the truth.

The relationship between Savvy and Nate is one of second chances but the people of Silence are determined to keep them apart. From secrets and lies, to the ultimate betrayal Savvy continues to struggle with the return of Nate Gaines in the wake of revelations and her need for a man who broke her heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, interesting and questionable secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to Savvy’s co-workers and fellow law enforcement officers: Trooper Auden Maynard, Savvy’s father and former sheriff Brant Colter and his wife Phyllis Dubois, Deputy Jeff Sanchuk, Deputy KC Kingman, chief deputy Hugo Alexander and his son Carson, as well as several townsfolk.

INSIDE SILENCE is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, power and control, obsession and murder, family and relationships, forgiveness and love. The character driven premise is suspenseful, intriguing and dramatic; the romance is seductive and fated; the characters are desperate, determined and dynamic.

Inside Silence by Freya Barker isn’t just a romantic suspense—it’s a deeply human story about second chances, old wounds, and the strength it takes to face the past you thought you’d buried. Set against the rugged backdrop of a small Colorado town that’s anything but quiet, Barker blends mystery, emotion, and romance with her signature authenticity.

Savannah “Savvy” Colter is the kind of heroine you can’t help but admire—steady, competent, and quietly fierce. As the sheriff of Edwards County, she’s earned her badge the hard way, proving herself over and over again in a job that demands everything she has. But when two brutal murders hit her jurisdiction and a ghost from her past comes strolling back into town, the calm she’s fought for starts to crack.

That ghost? Nate Gaines—a man who left without a word fifteen years ago and took her heart with him. Now he’s back, a single father trying to rebuild his life and give his daughter a sense of stability after tragedy. He’s looking for peace, not trouble—but in a town like Silence, trouble has a way of finding you.

Barker has a knack for making her characters feel real. Nate isn’t the perfect hero—he’s flawed, guarded, and a little broken—but every decision he makes comes from a place of love and guilt. Savvy, for all her strength, carries her own quiet grief and distrust. Watching these two navigate not just a dangerous murder investigation but also the tangled history between them is riveting. Their chemistry simmers beneath every tense exchange, every late-night conversation, every moment they dare to trust again.

The suspense is layered beautifully. The town of Silence feels like a living, breathing entity—secrets lurking under every porch light, old grudges simmering just beneath polite smiles. As Savvy races to solve a murder that hits too close to home, she also finds herself confronting questions she’s avoided for years: what really happened back then, and can you ever truly forgive the person who broke you?

Freya Barker doesn’t shy away from the messy parts of life—grief, guilt, redemption—but she balances them with the quiet hope that love, even the second time around, is worth fighting for.

Savannah and Nate’s second chance at love story is angsty, suspenseful and compelling. The two were young lovers fifteen years ago until he abruptly left town without telling her and broke off all contact. Now, he is back in Silence with his teenage daughter in tow. Nate is surprised that Savannah is now the sheriff and she is surprised to see him back in town after the way he left and to discover that he is a single dad now. A lot has changed over the past fifteen years, but it soon becomes clear that one thing hasn’t. Some still see Nate as the troublemaker he once was and are determined to see him leave town again.

Nate has recently assumed full responsibility for his daughter after her mother overdosed. Despite his own troubled teenage years, he believes the town of Silence will give his daughter a more stable life than living in Vegas would. He has his own contracting business and can find work anywhere. Nate was wild in his youth and had a few run ins with the law which hardly endeared him to Savannah‘s father, the former sheriff and a few others. Still he never expected to find himself a suspect in a murder investigation.

Savannah and her deputies are suddenly dealing with a crime spree and some see Nate as a suspect. She does not, and does her best to rein in her deputies. Nate and Savannah reconnect over the ensuing weeks, and he finally reveals why he left fifteen years ago. The revelation certainly makes Savannah see several people in her life differently, and not in a good way. As she works on several cases, Savannah is also gaining new insight into her department, the townspeople and Nate. The feelings Nate and Savannah once felt for each other are much stronger now and some are not happy about it. It seems appearances are deceiving, and even in small towns like Silence, evil lurks in the shadows waiting to be exposed.

This compelling and twisty book as my wholehearted recommendation.

Inside Silence by Freya Barker
Silence #2

~ Another superb story by one of my favorite authors – Couldn’t put it down ~

What I liked:
* Savvy Colter: Sheriff of Silence, intelligent, strong, resourceful, excellent leader, understaffed, has suffered more than one loss, may get a second chance at love with her HS boyfriend-Nate
* Nate Gaines: single parent of Tatum, business owner, good with his hands, recently moved back to Silence, has a difficult backstory, has a second chance in Silence and with Savvy
* Tatum: recently lost her mother, grieving, musical, fourteen, bullied then befriended by Carson, has a difficult situation to deal with
* Carson Alexander: son of Silence’s Chief Deputy, sixteen, respectful, caring, attracted to Tatum, deals with a difficult situation along with Tatum
* Catching up with characters from the previous book
* Learning what happened between Savvy and Nate originally and how it impacted them in the present
* The wisdom and maturity of both main characters and their openness with one another
* The supporting characters and knowing that some will have books of their own and that Hugh & Bess will be starring in book three
* Being able to thoroughly dislike the bad guys and wish Karma would deal with them
* The murder mysteries and the way they were solved
* That I became immersed in the story and cared about the outcome
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about what might have motivated those who committed crimes in this story
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Some things are worth a second shot

Inside Silence is the second book in the Silence series. This story is about Savannah 'Savvy' Colter and Nate Gaines. She is the Sheriff of Edwards County, where the town of Silence is. I loved her self awareness, poise, character, depth and ability to hold her own and not back down. Her father has been Sheriff for years before he retired and she was voted in. Nate is a newly single father to Tatum 'Tate', his fourteen year old daughter, and he works as a building contractor. Nate has returned to Silence because of Tate, even after swearing he would never return fifteen years ago. But Tate has become a tear-away and up to all sorts of trouble since Nate took custody three months ago after her mother OD'd. Savvy and Nate had been been a couple when he was twenty-four and she was seventeen. Neither cared about anything but her father has caused a major issue and ran Nate out of town. Let's just say that Nate is not one for badges and when he sees Savvy again she is the one wearing it. Well this is going to be a sparking start to something special. Along the way there are two murders in "nothing ever happens in" Silence which put Savvy and the department on the hunt for who is behind all the trouble. The relationship between Savvy and Nate is wonderful as it unfurls and develops, dealing with their past so they can have a future. Tate is sweet and lovely, but also wickedly naughty and able to get into all sorts of mischief when she wants to. I loved this book so much as it is a terrific read that keep you reading early into the morning.

Sheriff Savannah “Savvy” Colter is following in the footsteps of her father, the former Sheriff. She is surprised to see Nate Gaines back in town and with a fourteen-year-old daughter, Tate. She learns that Tate’s mother had died from an overdose and Nate has custody of a daughter he barely knows. Savvy was upset when Nate left town years ago with no goodbye. She has no idea why he left, but that is just one of the mysteries that she will need to solve. When a visiting man is viciously murdered, Savvy and her small department begin the investigation. Her conflict with one of her deputies is finally resolved, but this leaves her department even more ill equipped to handle a second murder. They need outside assistance and a friend, and state trooper, is assigned to her department. Nate, a construction contractor, is able to get several jobs, but then is threatened for returning to town. He knew that there would be some who were unhappy with his return, but it has been years since he left. As he and Savvy renew their friendship, and maybe something more, someone doesn’t want them getting back together, but why and who? When his daughter is missing, whoever is after them has gone too far. Will they find her and her friend before it is too late? A rush from beginning to end, with a strong female lead, as Savvy is trying to find a killer before he kills again. Silence hides so much.....

Corruption...
Betrayal....
Heartbreaking secrets....
And many, many lies.
But it also offers...
Acceptance...
Forgiveness...
Redemption....
Hope...
And love.
I am so glad Savvy and Nate get their second chance together, they are perfect for each other. She is feisty and driven, determined to prove he is worth a second chance and that actually his first chance was shadowed by the deeds of the corrupt, making his reputation and the judgement of others unfair. Whilst she is driven, she is also too easily sucked into her work and loses all concept of time and meals. Nate is very different to the man he was sixteen years ago, but he is perfect for Savvy, he understands her work, her drive and her passion for the job and supports her completely. He also makes her take a step back, makes sure she eats and sleeps - two things she is not good at, and he loves her completely and unreservedly for everything she is and everything she stands for.
I also really like Tate, she can be sassy and a typical teen, but she also has a really great relationship with Nate and the bond she forms with Savvy is good for both of them and a counterpoint to Nate's overprotective nature.
I have really enjoyed both books in this series so far and I look forward to book three next year...I see fireworks in Bess and Hugo's future!

I love that the small towns Ms Barker creates make me feel like going home. The realistic and relatable characters always pull me in for long visit. This book is an emotional healing of the past hurts and hope for new beginnings without the shadows of that past.

Savvy has worked her ass off to follow in Brant's footsteps. But not everyone is ready for a female sherriff and when she finds her self looking inside her team, it is a big kick to the gut. She is such a strong woman, keeping her emotions in check when everyone has eyes on her but she also recognized that she has some vulnerabilities just like everyone else.

Nate never thought he would return to Silence the way he was pushed out. He isn't certain the town folk will accept him back but he couldn't think of a better place to bring his struggling teenager for a new start. He knows he has unfinished business with Savvy and maybe she will forgive him.

When the quiet town once again begin to spiral and the safety of the town is threatened. Savvy finds herself digging deep, bringing in some outside help and up to her eyeballs in stress. Nate quickly tries to be there as a safe place and resting comfort.

Grab your copy and enjoy the wonderfully crafted web of suspense, realistic romance.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Gritty, Emotional, and Beautifully Human Story

Inside Silence is everything I’ve come to expect from Freya Barker — real characters, raw emotion, and a story that grabs hold and doesn’t let go. Sheriff Savannah Colter is a powerhouse heroine — capable, strong, and deeply grounded — yet Barker allows us to see her vulnerabilities, which makes her all the more compelling. Watching her navigate the demands of leadership while confronting her past was both inspiring and incredibly moving.

Nate Gaines is the perfect counterbalance — a single father trying to rebuild and protect his daughter while facing ghosts he thought he left behind. The tension between Savvy and Nate is thick with history, regret, and an undeniable pull that feels so authentic it’s impossible not to root for them.

The mystery element adds a sharp edge of suspense that keeps you turning pages, but it’s the emotional depth — the way Barker captures redemption, forgiveness, and second chances — that truly makes this book stand out.

Inside Silence isn’t just a romantic suspense story; it’s a reflection on what it means to come home — to a place, a person, and yourself. Another brilliant, heartfelt read from Freya Barker.

This is the 2nd book in the Silence series featuring the page-turning emotional, second chance romance full of suspense and twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Nate and Savannah/Savvy's story grabs your attention from the very beginning and it doesn't let go with all the twists and turns that lead up to the surprise ending keeping the readers riveted. When Nate returns home with his daughter Tatum he never expected the drama he walked into. Nate was just hoping for the chance to reconnect with Savvy the woman he needs more than he needs air to breathe. Imagine what Nate feels when he finally catches up with Savvy only to see her wearing the one thing he's always hated the Sheriff's badge. Savannah is in the middle of trying to catch a violent killer not an old flame even if the chemistry between them is still as strong as it was back then maybe stronger which is hard to ignore. I don't want to say anymore and ruin it for anyone else with spoilers. You really need to read this page-turning emotional, second chance romance full of suspense and twists and turns to see what happens. I would definitely recommend reading this book and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this wonderful series.

Inside Silence is the riveting next installment of Freya Barker's newest series, Silence. Savannah (Savvy) has taken over as Sherriff of Edwards County after her Dad, Brant retired. She's still trying to prove herself capable (in some people's eyes) and operating shorthanded when there's a couple of gruesome murders in the county. Add in the fact that her first love Nate, who just up and disappeared without a word 15 years ago, is back in town with his teenage daughter, Tate, looking to create a stable life for her. Savvy is feeling the pressure from all sides! The truth about Nate's disappearance from her life almost brings her to her knees! The secrets revealed had my mind spinning and the suspense had me sitting on the edge of my seat! The chemistry between Savvy and Nate LEAPS off the page and the whole situation had me rooting HARD for them!

Once again, Ms. Barker builds the suspense perfectly to the surprising conclusion, along the way making you fall head over heels in love with her characters. She writes in such a way that even the town of Silence becomes a living, breathing character that I fall more and more in love with! I seriously can't wait to find out what happens next in this series!

Another amazing addition to the series with Savannah aka Savvy, who’s the Sheriff of her county and Nate, a past ex, who has always had her heart even after he disappeared for years without a trace. Nate is back in town to raise his daughter Tate, hoping the small town and a new beginning will help the young teen after her mom’s death. Nate had a not so great reputation back then and Savvy was the only one who saw him for who he really was, coming back is difficult, dredging up bad memories and a past that the residents remember. When murders happen in the small town, Savvy is stretched thin with her cases, secrets are revealed and past hurts are exposed and in the midst of everything, these two find a way back to each other…but first a killer has to be stopped before they strike again.
YES!!!! I couldn’t stop reading and put this book down until the end and the characters were so real and honest. The descriptions were spot on, the story flowed beautifully, steam and suspense and the ending when all is revealed…twists and turns and surprises I did not see coming…especially the reasons and how it all tied in together….absolutely LOVED IT!!

I love this new series, Silence, and Book 2, Inside SIlence, is as great as the first one. Barker develops characters in intriguing ways and I love that you see characters from previous books as a series moves on — it’s great to catch up with folks after a HEA. Savannah and Nate are a great couple. Savannah is a spit fire and Barker’s use of female characters in non-traditional roles adds to the tension in the stories — they are bada$$es not belles waiting to be saved. As for Nate? How can you not swoon at a single dad that takes such good care of his kids.

I love the more mature characters that Freya is known for conjuring up and there’s always a plot to sink your teeth into. Nothing worse than a romantic suspense that is light on suspense and romance. And there’s always amazing dynamics between side characters. I hope that this series develops as fully as some of her other series like PASS, Arrow’s Edge, and HMT1 & 2.

Freya’s books never fail and I re-read each series several times a year, in between her and other beloved authors’ new releases. Her books are more like spending time catching up with old friends with every re-read.

I can’t wait until the next release.

A page turner with suspense, romance, twists and turns. An emotional story about second chances and the undercurrent of a small town. Nate was pushed out of town but is back to raise his daughter in Silence. Tatum is still grieving the loss of her mother. While trying to find their way they both find what they need in their lives. Nate hoping to overcome his old reputation to become part of Silence. He runs into Savvy who he left behind with no explanation. After some soul searching and advice from a friend he tells Savvy why he left. As they fall back in love they have a lot to work through.
Savvy is the town’s Sheriff. She is surprised to see Nate back in town. After an incident with one of the old guard, she starts to find corruption in her department. While dealing with this she is also dealing with 2 murders. As everything starts to come to a head, she realizes that Nate has always been her one. Together they deal with all of the complexities of past, present and future. Savvy and the CID close in on the killer. The end result has Savvy thinking that she doesn’t know what to believe. Nate is there to fight for them and the family they will become.

Awesome read! The amazing Freya Barker never disappoints. I loved this story. Savvy is the sheriff of Edwards County. She's overworked, understaffed and now has not one, but two gruesome murders land in her town. Nate Gaines became a full time father instantly and is trying to navigate building the bond with his teenage daughter and helping her through her grief in the sudden loss of her mother. He brings her back to his hometown of Silence, a place he'd vowed never to return to, to give them a fresh start. Savvy is the woman he disappeared on 15 years before, with no explanation and no contact since. Feelings run high on both sides, and as secrets unravel, she has a lot to process. Can they have a second chance and find their forever? Feelings surface on both sides, like Nate had never left, but there's a lot to unpack and navigate. All this in addition to trying to solve two gruesome murders. The plot carries some surprising twists in the race to stop a murderer. As always the story is peopled with realistic, relatable, characters. Ms. Barker excels at writing believable characters, who find themselves in extraordinary situations.

Another outstanding Silence addition! Freya Barker blows me away with her incredible romantic suspense writing!

As the Sheriff of Edwards County in eastern Washington state, Savannah Colter is stressed enough as it is, but when bodies start turning up in their small neck of the woods it’s severely overtaxing her department. In addition, a blast from her past is back in town and she isn’t happy about it. She hasn’t seen Nate in years but after leaving town without a word she isn’t interested in anything he has to say.

Savvy may hate him for leaving town fifteen years ago but she doesn’t know the whole story. Unfortunately, Nate isn’t the one that should fill her in. With a need to provide himself and his teenage daughter a better and slower lifestyle he returned home to Silence, Washington. With his past he knows it won’t be easy since half the residents are ready to run him right back out of town.

As the past comes raging into the present Savvy and Nate will have to come to terms with the people that used their power against them years ago, while tracking a killer that comes way to close to home.

We are back in Silence, Washington where in the previous story we met former Sheriff Brant Colter and Phil.
This time, the story belongs to his daughter, Savannah/Savvy Colter and Nate Gaines. She is the current sheriff of the town and Nate, the bad boy now man, who was her HS sweetheart. The same one who broke her heart when he disappeared.
After over fifteen years, Nate has returned to town after becoming the full-time single dad to his teenage daughter Tatum/Tate. Even though he was run off in his youth, Silence had been home, and now he hoped he could find a place for him and Tate to live .
His encounter with Savvy reminds him of the love that never really disappeared. As they start to form a friendship and try to overcome the past, danger seems to surround them as bodies are starting to pile. Are the deaths related or two separate cases?
This was another wonderful, and engaging suspense romance where the main characters are mature, and perfect in their imperfections . Making them real and relatable.
This reader can’t wait for what else is in store in the next book.
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Buoni Amici Press. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

This is a series that is getting better with every book in it It has all the hallmarks of Freya's work older main characters that life has battered and the perfect blend of Romance and suspense

Savannah and Nate get a highly angsty second chance at love in the small town of Silence. Fifteen years ago, Nate abruptly abandoned Savannah, then his young lover. Now, he’s back as a single dad, having taken full responsibility for his teenage daughter after her mother's death.

The reunion is complicated: Savannah is now the Sheriff, and Nate's troubled past makes him an easy target for local suspicion. When a crime spree and a murder investigation rock the town, Nate is the prime suspect. Savannah must fight to clear the name of the man she still loves while reining in her skeptical deputies.

As their rekindled feelings grow, Nate finally reveals the dark secret behind his departure 15 years ago—a revelation that forces Savannah to question everyone she trusts. This compelling and twisty mystery proves that evil lurks beneath the surface of small-town life. A fantastic blend of second-chance romance and suspense that earns a wholehearted recommendation.

I absolutely loved being inside Silence!

This new installment in Silence is an absolute must read. Although it’s book 2 in this new town, it can certainly be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

Told in dual POV, this unique and charming second chance romance was more than just a romance. This was a poignant story of second chances in life and missed opportunities along with suspenseful, and mysterious violent crimes. A healthy dose of angst and passion, Nate and Savy’s story was rocked to the core when said unsuspecting crimes hit too close to them.

You see Savy’s the sheriff, and Nate is back in town and attracting a lot of negative attention. As always this author never fails extraordinary characters in ordinary situations. These characters were so well developed, so likable and realistic. Both characters have deep flaws and challenging pasts, so that romance is not a priority. Yet, in spite of these new developments they have a history and an undeniable attraction that’s just complicating matters a little more.
The push and pull, the slow burn, their mature intelligence towards life, these characters and their story was absolutely amazing!

Savy and Nate get a second chance at love 15 years later… better late than never; am I right?!?!
(I gotta start off with a side note - I loved her father in his story, but this story makes me kinda mad at him - Freya, I’m mad at you!!! Ugh - not really, but I cannot believe him… maybe it’s because I’m a boy mom and not a girl dad… I’ll get over it…)
Anyways, Savy is the sheriff of the town they grew up in and Nate and his daughter are the town’s newest residents. Savy is hesitantly excited Nate is back, but it seems like someone isn’t excited for him to be there. And some bodies have started to show up and Savy has her hands full trying to figure out what’s going on even though she would like nothing more than to spend more time with Nate.
Nate is a sweet single father to his daughter, Tate. I’m already kinda hoping for her story even though she’s currently only 14. I love how he hates it, but he can kinda relate to Savy’s dad’s thoughts and feelings since he’s now raising a daughter. Ohhh how he’s come full circle in sense.

I love this story!!!

Silence, Washington. Not a real place but a place I would definitely live in. Although a quiet, sleepy little town, Sheriff Savanah Colter is feeling the pressure with two murders to solve and an ex boyfriend who Left her years before without warning. What she learns is that the town of Silence has some secrets Savvy just starts to find out.
Nick Gaines moves back to a place he left quickly and never planned to return to. Bad memories and a girl he had to leave behind. But now he is a single father and moves back to Silence to raise her in his hometown. When he finds out who the new Sheriff is his feelings a split. Go after the girl he once loved or avoid because she is the Sheriff. Love wins and secrets start to come out about his abrupt exit out of town.
This book had twists I didn't expect. It took small town law enforcement in a different direction. What you will still get out of every book Freya Barker writes is a HEA and chemistry between the main characters. This is the second book in the series and I just saw there is a third? I'll be on the lookout for that.

Inside Silence is the second book in Freya Barker’s new series that takes place in a small town called … Silence!
We met Savannah “Savvy” Colter in the first book – she took over as the county sheriff after her dad had a heart attack, and her dad was the ‘hero’ of the first book in the series. She is someone who intrigued me in the first book so I was thrilled to find out that she will be THE female lead in the next book that is now in our hands!
Obviously, any good female character needs a counterpart so enter her old flame Nate Gaines who never thought he would return to Silence but behold the stars, here he is and not alone … he comes as a package with his 14-year-old daughter.
I love second chance stories as the characters have had time to grow up and become someone they were meant to be so seeing Savvy and Nate find their way to being together after 15 years, was great … and of course some grisly murders add to the ambiance so grab a cup of tea (or coffee or something stronger), sit down and get lost in the town that is not silent at all when you look under the surface!

This story has it all and really packs a punch. Nate grew up in Silence and returns as a single parent to his teenage daughter ready to face the people who judged him so harshly as a youngster based on his background and drove him away. Savvy is still feeling the pressure to fill her dad's big shoes after taking over his job as Sheriff and that is before two brutal murders and her teenage boyfriend returns stirring up feelings. One of things I love about Freya Barker's book is how she realistically portrays the emotional impact on people of things that happen whether in the past or present. Sometimes learning the truth can be very painful and once it is out in the open there is no way back. Loved this action packed book, full of great characters and absolutely did not identify the killer so that was a shock. Totally enjoying the town of Silence and the cast of characters who live there and looking forward to more in the series.
