Come back to the sun-drenched shores of the Outer Banks and immerse yourself in another exciting and inspiring tale from Roseanna M. White, The Island Bakeshop. This dual-timeline, clean romance will have you reading late into the night to find out what happens next.

In this uplifting story of hope and renewal, you’ll meet Harper Dailey, who returns to Avon, North Carolina, so she can help run the family business, Sunshine Bakery, after her father’s heart attack. Suddenly, her thriving career at an upscale Savannah bakery is behind her, as is her rocky relationship with her ex-boyfriend—that is, until he shows up in Avon, letting her know he now owns the building the shop is in, and he may not renew the lease.

For Beckett Mills, Avon is a quiet refuge after his eight years of active service in the Navy. He works as hard at keeping folks at arm’s length as he does at running his fishing charter business. His plan for distancing himself from others works well until the fateful day he enters the bakery and sees a beautiful Harper being harassed by her ex-boyfriend. Suddenly, he casts his fears aside and steps in to save the day.

Harper and Beckett have no intentions of beginning a romance, but when the pasts they are running from collide, they know it’s not just a coincidence that they have ended up here at the same time. God has placed them together for a reason. Can Beckett let go of the worries that haunt him and welcome Harper into his life? Will Harper realize she can face any challenge with God—and just maybe Beckett—by her side? Don’t miss this faith-filled story of hope, courage, and the grace to begin anew.

A must-read for fans of: Inspirational and clean romance; Small-town Christian fiction; Contemporary fiction with faith and heart; Second chance love stories; The Island Bookshop by Roseanna M. White; Authors like Denise Hunter and Courtney Walsh

This is a return to Avon, North Carolina on the Outer Banks where we visit with the group of friends from the first story, The Island Bookshop. In this story, we get to know Harper and Beck and in a dual timeline, we see their ancestors that settled in the area many years ago. Fun banter and teasing accompany a fake relationship when Harper's ex abusive fiancé shows up to try to rekindle things and Beck steps in the proclaim Harper as his girlfriend. It is fun to watch them together. The characters are likable, the setting is nice, and the historical background makes the story rich and interesting. Great read.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

I enjoyed the first book in this series so much that I knew I would love this one, and that’s exactly what happened. It has good character development, a beautiful setting, and an engaging storyline that keeps you turning the pages. It’s a good summer read and would be a nice read for any other time of the year.

Thank you netgalley for this ARC!!

This book had me slow down and read even though I finished it so quickly! We follow Harper our FMC to North Carolina after her return from Georgia to help run her parents bakery after leaving her shady ex boyfriend behind! Enter Beck, our MMC with a past of his own. The two work together (fake dating troupe ;) ) to deter the ex boyfriend and we learn more about the pair as the story progresses! We also get some scenes from Harper’s ancestry which at first confused me until I realized who we were reading about. It was a nice tie in to the rest of the story.

This book is a closed door Christian romance through and through. I really enjoyed the emphasis of prayer and trusting in the Lord and the authors ability to tastefully place these items in the book while also allowing for current day banter and the formation of authentic respectful relationship.

I really enjoyed that this book was an easier read but not where I was bored reading it. If I had to not some criticism I would say I felt that some of the plot points got lost or lacked a bit of closure. I can’t say much of that without revealing the ending but none of them being big enough to change my love of the story. I also found the story to be a bit predictable on some ways but our author did surprise me on some ways she chose to break up the predictable parts. I do wish we had maybe 1 more chapter just to say goodbye to some of our characters.

First and foremost, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s a beautiful story of overcoming fears and reclaiming happiness, most importantly ー love.

Before getting into the nitty-gritty, I guess a heads-up is in order. While the title might conjure up a The Little Beach Street Bakery-ish story, this is more like a character-driven novel, with a bakery as the backdrop. You may be taken by surprise, but hopefully pleasantly.

The story adopts a dual timeline told in three POVs: Harper and Beck in the present day, and Sophie back in 1846.
Just a few pages in, it was established that Harper has baggage from the past, and it quickly materializes in the shape of Jay ― her abusive ex-fiance. Beck, an ex-Navy officer who runs his own fishing charter, comes to her rescue by posing as her boyfriend. In order to keep Jay at bay, Harper and Beck decide to keep up their pretense…

I was immediately drawn into Harper and Beck’s story, and enjoyed how their pretense as boyfriend and girlfriend gradually develops into something deeper ― a true connection and affection for each other. I particularly liked the ‘knight in shining armor and a damsel in distress’ feel it has. Beck is very protective of Harper right from the start and determined to make sure that she is in safe hands. The romance is slow-burn, perfectly matching Roseanna M. White’s beautiful, atmospheric prose. Although there is the ‘fake date’ trope and a little bit of banter, it’s not like the kind full of mirth; the overall tone is gentle and calm, wrapping tenderly around the entire book.

On the other hand, it took me a while to connect with Sophie’s story. The sudden introduction of her storyline didn’t make much sense to me at first, and it was only after I sorted out the settings and characters that I got engaged with her story.
However, that doesn’t mean that I didn’t appreciate her story - on the contrary, I was invested in Sophie’s narrative as much as I was in Harper and Beck’s, and I got caught up in my emotions as I read this book. I loved how those two story lines ー what initially appeared to be irrelevant ー converged in the present timeline, underscoring the ‘meant-for-each-other’ atmosphere.

The secondary characters ー Harper and Beck’s friends in particular ー play a significant role in this book, and I adored how they provide moral support to both Harper and Beck, and guide them to the right path when either of them is on the verge of going astray. They open up Beck’s eyes and help him discard his self-doubt and be true to his feelings.

The transformation of both Harper and Beck delighted me. They both were emotionally battered and wounded at the beginning, but with their family and friends’ support, they emerged much stronger in the end.
The happy tidings are literally the icing on the cake. I absolutely loved this delightful read.

While this book seems to be roughly categorized as a Christian Romance, and there is indeed an underlying theme of Christianity, it’s not so much as to dictate the whole story; it subtly marbles through it, which I appreciate.
If you are a fan of contemporary fiction with slow-burn and wholesome romance, this book is for you. I'll give this book 4.5 stars.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🧁🥐🥯🍪🛥🎣🐚🏝✝️

My thoughts: 🔖Page 38 of 312 Chapter Three - I knew there was going to be an historical dual timeline. So I'm stopping here because I need my morning brain to read HF.
🔖96 Chapter Six - A busy day has ruined my reading plans. I was hoping to finish this today but I'm too tired and the story isn't as good as Book 1. I also have no idea how the historical POV ties into the story other than they have similar significant others.
🔖200 Chapter Twelve - I'm still in the weeds with my reading stack but I finally had time to sit down and read more of this story. It has been several days but it was easy to fall back into it. It took me a minute to warm up to the historical portion of the story but it's just as good as the present day storyline now, and I think I know their connection.

I absolutely adore this series and I am looking forward to the next installment. I appreciate the Roseanna M. White's diligence in acknowledging the businesses and individuals she fictionalized for this story. It makes me want to take a trip to the Outer Banks and check them out firsthand. When I began reading this book, the series was unnamed, but it now has a title, I think it's very fitting. Both books feature dual timelines that link the main characters to past events, making them ideal for enthusiasts of historical fiction, as well as those who prefer historical elements woven into a contemporary story. In my experience with dual timelines, one storyline often overshadows the other, but Roseanna consistently crafts her stories in a way that ensures both timelines are harmoniously intertwined to complement each other, rather than competing for your attention. I will be reading more from her catalog while I wait for Book 3.

Recommend to others: Certainly! It is gratifying to encounter Christian fiction that seamlessly integrates diverse genres. While many publications tend to be exclusively romance or inspirational, this series demonstrates a comprehensive blend of various elements from historical to suspense.

This is a sweet, clean, small-town romance with bakery charm, Outer Banks scenery, family ties, and a very soft landing. It follows Harper Dailey, who returns to Avon, North Carolina to help run her family’s bakery after her father’s heart attack, only to deal with an ex who threatens both her peace and the bakery’s future. Beckett Mills, a Navy veteran who runs fishing charters, steps in when Harper needs help, and their connection grows from there.

For me, this was a perfectly nice three-star read, but I think I’ve officially aged out of this exact kind of cutesy, Hallmark-style story. Not because there’s anything wrong with it, but because my personal reading taste has apparently become “please make it messier, darker, weirder, or at least emotionally inconvenient.” This book is clean, gentle, very low-stakes, and very much the kind of story where you can tell where the plane is landing before it even leaves the gate.

The writing and plot leaned a little young for me, almost more like a YA-style adult romance in tone. That said, I can absolutely see the audience for it. This would be a great fit for a younger adult reader, someone who prefers closed-door romance, or anyone who loves cozy stories where the comfort is the point and the drama never gets too sharp. It is wholesome, beachy, bakery-adjacent, and basically wearing a cardigan.

What worked for me:
- The Outer Banks setting gave the book a soft, coastal escape feel.
- The bakery backdrop was cute and easy to enjoy.
- Harper was sympathetic, especially as someone trying to rebuild her life.

What didn’t work for me:
- The plot felt very predictable, which made it hard for me to feel fully invested.
- The tone was a little too cutesy and Hallmark-ish for my current taste.
- The writing felt younger than I expected, almost like YA with adult characters.

Tropes and vibes:
Clean romance
Small-town romance
Fresh start
Low-stakes romance
Hallmark movie vibes

Who should read it:
This is probably perfect for readers who want comfort over chaos, predictability over panic, and romance that stays wholesome from start to finish. It wasn’t totally my personal flavor, but I can definitely see this being an easy win for the right reader.

The Island Bakeshop grabbed my attention from the get go. Set in Cape Hatteras, the follows Harper and Beckett Mills, two people from the same group of friends found in the Island Bookshop.

While related, in that both have largely the same list of characters, each book can be read as a stand alone, though reading Island Bookshop first makes you feel you're among familiar friends with the Island Bakeshop. Like it's predecessor, The Island Bakeshop also is a split time novel set in Cape Hatteras.

Harper is a baker par excellence with a secret. Beckett Mills the local tour operator also has a secret, rather, many secrets.

Once Harper's secret is revealed to Beckett, their friends and her family, he proposes they enter into a fake relationship to protect her from her former abusive boyfriend Jay who has eventually followed her here.

Little do either of them know that each of them are been carrying a torch for the other. Will they ever find out? Once they do what will happen? Will the fake romance become real? Or will Beckett's other explosive secrets blow their fake relationship out of the water. And how are they to actively deal with Jay, who poses a threat, besides protecting Harper from him?

White tackles each of these questions with skill with each character arc showing real character growth, especially with regards to Harper who is no longer the frightened mouse she was at the beginning. White depicts the character and nature of abuse and its longer term effects on the victim very sensitively and yet tellingly without being needlessly graphic. It was an eye opener.

The split time part of the novel? The back story/history. That's fascinating too. Read the book to find out more and to find out how it ties in with the modern tale of love, protection, slow burn, secrets, abusive relationships and God.

I'm hoping the other three friends left in this tight knit group can each have their own story.

Mild content warning: there's some descriptions of domestic abuse, verbal abuse, gaslighting and suchlike that might be a trigger for those just coming out of such relationships themselves.

I was given an ARC by the publisher courtesy NetGalley, but the opinions expressed here are my own.

I can't believe I just read a romance novel. And I liked it! I really liked it!
(I'm a mystery reader nearly 95% of the time. But the cover got me to pick it up. A bake shop, the Outerbanks, and a lighthouse. What's not to love?)
Book 1 was The Island Bookshop. I would describe book 1 as just okay. I like the story. I like the characters. The writing felt off. But I did want more story with our characters.

Enter book 2. #TheIslandBakeshop. This can be read as a standalone. We are sticking with the same group of characters but the focus for this novel is Harper and Beck. We got to know a little of their story in book 1. Some time has passed from the first story as Kennedy is now married and pregnant. (our main characters from book 1). Harper is comfortably in a routine working in her parents' bakery, and crushing on the mysterious Beck. In this novel, their worlds are both shaken up when people from their past come back to confront them. I don't want to give too much away, but their story feels so genuine. They are just written in a way that had me grinning at their banter, rushing to read and find out more of their separate pasts. Dive more into the drama that was happening. And wishing I could be as calm as Beck in a dramatic situation. I feel the prose was much better in book 2 than in book 1. This is a christian romance series, but I was not overwhelmed by it and it fit into the story well. It really did flow well together. Oh! and again, we have a few chapters that take us back to the mid 1800's on the island. I was very interested in reading the author notes at the end and her historical research and facts, as well as modern inquiries for the island.

So I am giving The Island Bakeshop 2 thumbs up! And 4.5 stars. And that's really really good coming from this mystery reader.
Thank you #netgalley and #guideposts for the kindle eArc of this novel. I am assuming there will be a 3rd novel as we still have two people in our friends group that are single. And I am looking forward to reading it.

This was another excellent Guideposts dual timeline (though primarily contemporary) story by Roseanna M. White! This one is a follow-up to The Island Bookshop, but can easily stand on its own if you have not read the first book. However, if you have read the first book, you've met the hero and heroine of this story as they were side characters in the first story. And you can see how Wes and Kennedy are faring as they hover in the background of this story as well. This book follows Harper and Beck, who as friends of Wes and Kennedy have been brought together in weekly "friend dinner" nights. Beck also frequents Harper's bakery to provide goodies for his boat charter clients. And it is one such visit to the bakery that has him walking in on Harper's worst nightmare. This book had all of my favorite tropes included - past history of abuse, fake dating, grumpy/sunshine - and I fell headlong into this story and did not want to escape (which finds me writing this review at 1:45 am.....). I enjoyed ALL of the things about this book. The characters were absolutely delightful. The banter was on point (I absolutely adored the nicknames that Harper and Beck continued to give each other) and had me laughing out loud. There were some parts that had me uptight and on edge in the same way a suspense novel does (and I do love my suspense) and there was always a bit of mystery lurking behind Beck's past that was fun to see the conclusion to. I enjoyed the faith thread as well and the mental health element that was featured in this one. This story, to me, was absolute perfection. It had just the right blend of character development and plot. Just the right blend of romance and drama. And I loved the way the past story line tied in with the modern. My only complaint was that the story wasn't quite long enough! Special thanks to Guideposts and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

The Island Bakeshop
by Roseanna M. White

Rating: 5 Star Review

I really enjoyed The Island Bakeshop by Roseanna M. White. This story has a cozy Outer Banks setting, with boats, fishing, lovable characters, faith, romance, and just enough suspense to keep things interesting.

Harper returns home to help with her family’s bakery after her father’s heart attack, but she’s also trying to escape an abusive ex-boyfriend and rebuild her life. I appreciated how realistically and sensitively the author handled Harper’s emotional healing without making the story feel too heavy.

Beck was such a strong and caring character without being over-the-top. Their fake-dating relationship developed naturally, and I loved the slow-building trust between them. The bakery setting added so much warmth to the story and made the island feel comforting and alive.

There’s also a small historical mystery woven into the story that added extra depth without taking away from the main romance. It is like having two stories in one.

The ending was satisfying and hopeful, tying up the emotional storylines nicely while leaving you with a feeling of peace and healing.

If you enjoy clean Christian romance, small-town coastal settings, protective heroes, and stories about second chances, this is definitely worth reading. But be careful if past abuse is a trigger for you. This might not be the book for you.

Thank you, NetGalley, Guideposts, and Roseanna M. White for the eARC book review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to Guideposts and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Roseanna M. White returns to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with the second novel in the Island Shop series, 'The Island Bakeshop'. This novel can be read as a stand-alone and features a dual-timeline story.

Harper Dailey has left her thriving career in Savannah as a baker to return to her family's Sunshine Bakery in Avon, North Carolina after her father suffers a heart attack and is told to slow down. While trying to settling into her new life, her ex-boyfriend/fiance, Jay arrives with the news that he owns the bakery building and the strip mall it is in. We know from the way that Harper responds to him that the parting wasn't amicable.

Enter Beckett(Beck) Mills, a former Navy man, who is now running a fishing charter business. Beck has tried to distance himself from everyone, but is drawn to Harper when he sees that she is being harassed by Jay. He pretends to be her boyfriend in order to save the day.

While neither are looking for love, their pasts and their paths continue to cross. They begin to spend time together fake dating but begin to wonder if God has brought them together for a reason.

This christian romance is filled with a playful banter between the romantic leads that had me smiling. The setting is perfect for those readers looking for a beach read or just a nice summer read. While not just a romance, it did provide an antagonist to the characters. The historical background was well done and the characters throughout were relatable. I will be watching for the next one.

“The Island Bakeshop” by Roseanna M. White takes readers back to the Outer Banks islands. It continues the story begun in “The Island Bookshop,” but this book can completely stand on its own. This book steps into the lives of Harper, her parents’ bakeshop, and Beck the boat charter captain. Harper has come back home to help run her family’s bakery after her father suffered a health scare. She left behind a bakery career in Savannah to return to the islands, but it seems she might have escaped from something else than just coming home to help her parents. Beck is quite content to run his charter boat business, hang out with his friends (Wes and Asher), and grab baked goods every morning to share with those who charter his boat each day. That baked goods habit ends up with Beck walking into the bakery and instantly knowing something is wrong for Harper, so he inserts himself in the situation to help her out. That help leads to so much more than what Beck or Harper ever expected.

In true Roseanna M. White fashion, this story has such wonderful characters woven into a really compelling plot. Add in some light mystery and intrigue along with a great historical side story, and this book is so much more than a beach read. I really need to read more about these characters, both the current day characters and their ancestors in the historical portions of the book. I highly recommend this book, whether you are needing a vacation book or just a literary escape at home, this book will fit the bill for sure.

Harper came home to Avon to escape a potentially dangerous relationship, but her feeling of safety evaporates when Jay walks into the family bakery and announces that he's bought their building. Avon has provided a different sort of escape for Beckett after his time in the marines, and he's determined to protect his friends if needed, including Harper - even if that means becoming her fake boyfriend to chase Jay away. But it can't become real - he daren't expose Harper to the dysfunction in his family, which he's convinced will eventually come through in his own genetics. Harper would love it to become real - but can she ever understand his hidden reasons enough to convince him they're not real?

A delightful split-time read with both a heartwarming contemporary story and an inspiring historical thread to provide some background for the lessons Harper and Beckett each need to learn. Having enjoyed meeting Harper in Kennedy's story, it was good to get to know her better, and also nice to see more of Kennedy and Lara (and others) - though each is a complete standalone story. I loved Beckett's care for his grandfather, but particularly appreciated seeing him finally agree to let Harper into that part of his life - though his parents are truly horrible. And Harper's patience is lovely to watch. All in all, a great read, and I'm hoping more visits to Avon are in my future! Recommended - 4.5 stars.

4.5⭐️
I have to admit, I enjoyed this Christian clean romance way more than I thought I would. It could have easily been 5 stars were it not for a couple of smallish things.

Harper and Beckett seem completely perfect for one another. There are issues—of course. Neither realized that the other is actually into them after more than a year of friendship that then leads to fake dating. I absolutely loved their banter and the sweetness of their budding romance despite difficult situations and story arcs that were handled with care. The supporting characters also work well.

Told in 3rd person, I really appreciated that we got balanced storytelling and thought process from both characters. I’m always going to love it when we get the MMC’s point of view. We also got the past coming to haunt both main characters in major ways that made for a really interesting plot. There’s also a dual timeline leading us into historical fiction. That’s the part I didn’t think I’d like at all but, surprisingly, loved here. In both the present and the past, there were things that left me clutching my pearls—very suspenseful in places and also some “OH NO THEY DIDN’T!”

The endings on both the contemporary and historical timelines felt rushed and I really wanted more from both. 30 more pages to tie them both up with all the flourish they absolutely deserved would have done the trick. Nevertheless, I’m still a fan.

Sincere thanks to NetGalley and Guideposts for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This second book in Guideposts Island Shop series features Harper Dailey, baker extraordinaire. Baker's hours don't allow much time for a social life, but Harper always makes time for a weekly friends group dinner. It doesn't hurt that Beckett Mills is usually in attendance as well, even if he had shown little interest in her at the dinner or during his frequent visits to her family's bakery. Yet, he immediately intervenes when entering the bakery to find Harper living her worst nightmare.

The Island Bookshop is an intense story dealing with healing from a range of abuses and neglect, but even healed wounds leave scars. Roseanna M. White handles this theme with sensitivity, and a focus on the importance of talking through one's hurts and a reliance on God, the great Healer. Trusting relationships are key. White allows readers the opportunity to get to know her characters, to develop empathy for them. This story is appropriate for romantic suspense fans, and would be equally appropriate for young adult readers who may or may not have yet encountered the signs of a toxic relationship. It might open up an avenue of conversation with a trusted adult.

The Island Bakeshop by Roseanna M. White is a warm and uplifting continuation of the island series, filled with charm, faith, and heartfelt storytelling. One of the most enjoyable parts of this book is seeing the characters from the first story continue to grow—their journeys feel deeper, more personal, and beautifully woven together.

The two main characters Harper and Becket each carry their own family and personal struggles, and that’s what makes this story feel so relatable. Their experiences reflect the tension, hurt, and hope that can exist within not just family relationships, but all relationships—reminding us that healing often takes time, grace, and a willingness to trust God in the process. It’s easy to see parts of ourselves in their journeys, especially in the desire for understanding, reconciliation, and belonging.

With gentle Christian themes of grace, forgiveness, and second chances, the story offers a comforting reminder of God’s presence in both the big and small moments of life. The strong sense of community, along with the ongoing growth of familiar characters, makes this a deeply encouraging and feel-good read.

Heartfelt

Wow! What a fantastic, heartfelt story! I was captured by Harper and Beck's story right from the start. Each has gone through a devastating experience that has made them wary of romantic relationships, which keeps their relationship in the friend zone. However, one very unexpected situation flips the friend zone out the door, leading to a very different relationship between them. That's where the story takes a turn.

I never know what to expect when I read the works of an author who is new to me, and author Roseanna White did not disappoint. The descriptions of the settings painted such a vivid picture in my mind. The interactions between Harper and Beck were stellar, and their back-and-forth banter, along with the names they gave each other, had me smiling and laughing. The greatest surprise that captivated my attention was the connection to the past. It added a great deal to the main storyline without taking away from it. The entire story is a flawless blend of romance, family, overcoming obstacles, second chances, and healing. The result is a beautiful, heartwarming story that I highly recommend.

Completed: May 18/26
Series: The Island Shop, #2
Format: digital ARC

Challenge Prompt: TBD

Book #47 of 2026:

I think Harper is my new bestie in the book world - or at least one of them. She is caring and hilarious. Best of all, she is an amazing professional baker. I am sure it is all calorie-free though!

To be honest, I could not get into the first quarter of this book. Once the fake dating started, I enjoyed it very much! The nicknames Harper and Beck use for each other are priceless. You could feel the mental and physical chemistry in all the best ways.

I did not enjoy the historical timeline as much in this book. In book , I found it pretty even between the teo timelines. I also did not find his (Beck) reasoning for being unable to marry and have kids really believable. Clearly he was leading a very different life. The story slowed down for a little while at about three quarters through. It picked up once they met up again. The ending was really good and I thought the last line was stellar.

I enjoyed this group of friends so much. It is a fun series with a great setting, a small community, and these books made me smile.

Thanks to Guideposts and Netgalley for an advanced reader's copy of this book. I really enjoyed reading it! Beck, who owns a charter fishing service and is in the Navy reserves, hides his family from his closest friends. Harper is still reeling from a poor relationship that ended 3 years ago. Together, along with a fake dating trope, a supportive circle of friends, and the Outer Banks gossip chain, they heal and grow while learning to rest in God's goodness. At the same time, a third storyline about a woman from 1846 brings depth to the story.

I love that this book deals with sensitive subjects and complicated pasts in a delicate way. Both main characters, as well as the side story, deal with very real issues that make then who they are. All three characters grow in the knowledge of God's grace as the story progresses.
The only thing I had a hard time with was Sophie's side story. The author made it fit into the main story, but I felt like there could have been some more depth. We see Sophie fighting for her husband, but we don't see how her best friends came to love each either which is very important to Beck's story. Overall, a great read and one I would recommend.

Returning to the Outer Banks with Roseanna M. White was just delightful! Harper and Beck were introduced in the first book in the Series, The Island Bookshop, but you can fully enjoy their story without having read that one first.
Harper is in a tough situation, and I love the support demonstrated by her family and friends. Beck goes above and beyond to help support her as her fake boyfriend. His background and military experiences lend him to be the perfect one to help protect her. The lines are blurred from the get-go with these two and it was enjoyable to see them discover the truth amidst the disguise. They grew alongside one another, with grace, vulnerability, and a good dose of humor. I adored all their creative “pet names” for one another. The story was captivating and paced perfectly to hold my undivided attention. I have yet to read a book by Roseanna M. White that did not encourage and inspire me, and I am thankful for the opportunity to have found her stories available through Guideposts.

The Island Bakeshop by Roseanna M. White is a sweet story that takes us back to Avon, North Carolina. I like the author’s descriptive writing style which brought the setting and characters to life. I thought the historical chapters tied in nicely with the rest of the story. I like Harper and Beck. I thought they were perfect for each other. I enjoyed the banter between the pair and loved the nicknames they came up with for each other. There is a great cast of secondary characters that include Kennedy and Lara from The Island Bookshop, which is the first book in The Island Shop series. I like that we got to catch up with Lara and Kennedy along with their friends. A subtle thread of faith runs through the story. The story had a touch of mystery as well. Harper has her ex-fiancé, Jay in the area declaring his love, but there is something sinister about the fellow. Beck disappears on Tuesday’s and no one knows where he goes. The author skillfully weaves romance, drama, mystery, and faith into an engaging, well-paced story. The Island Bakeshop can be read as a standalone. I finished The Island Bakeshop with a smile on my face and a craving for ginger fairings.

Uplifting tale about fighting our inner demons...with God's help

Harper Dailey loves working at the Sunshine Bakery with her parents. She left Georgia and another bakery to be here in Avon, North Carolina when her father had a heart attack. But she loves it here AND it's away from her abusive ex. Or it was. Now he's bought the building the bakery is in and he's stalking her.

Enter Beck Mills, fishing charter captain, who she has actually had her eyes on for a while now. When their friends suggest a fake dating proposition between Harper and Beck to keep the ex away, they both agree and they both start enjoying their time together.

Soon though Beck's past intrudes and he feels unable to proceed. But with prayer and God's help, everything turned out alright.

Also, there were parts that went back to 1846 in the story from a journal, which was interesting, and talked about residents from the area.

I loved this Christian romance. There were some dark parts in it that I wasn't expecting about domestic violence but also everything worked out for the best in the end.

I received this Digital Review Copy from Guideposts through NetGalley. Thank you.

The Island Bakeshop is a sweet young-adult-like romance story that has dual timelines. Both equally a page turner and each take place on the coast. As the story develops, you began to see a connection to the two-story lines and the conclusion is heartwarming.

Harper and Beck’s story is heartbreaking and haunting, and as they both deal with their past that has interrupted their present lives, they must find a way to deal with their problems before it will destroy everything, they worked hard to be able to move forward with their lives-whether it be together or separately.

As the story builds, I found myself not able to put this book down. I typically don’t read stories like this one but I’m glad I took a chance on it. I started with this book first, before the first book in the series, and now I need to go back and read the first book. You see, I’ve now become invested in these characters lives and want to learn more about them.

What a sweet, light and absorbing story. This book would be the perfect summer read.

Set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, The Island Bakeshop tells the story of Harper, who helps run the family bakery, and Beckett, who runs a charter boat. When Beckett steps in to help Harper out of a tough situation, they are forced into a fake dating circumstance until the situation can be resolved. But Beckett has reasons for never revealing his past, even to his best friends.

There are some serious issues at play but also plenty of laughter and witty banter. The nicknames that come up for each other based on their professions - swordfish and cinnamon roll, etc - are a highlight. There is also some flashbacks to the mid 1800s that eventually affect the story.

It was lovely and sweet and heartfelt. I enjoyed it just as much as I did the first book in the series. Highly recommended.

This is Christian fiction so expect discussions of faith.

Family friendly due.

This lovely story picks right up about a year or so after The Island Bookshop ends. I highly recommend reading the other book first as it sets up this one and the characters carry over. This book deals with abuse and child neglect so it's good to know that before reading.

I love allllll the lovely pastries mentioned in this story! Yes please!

Harper and Bennett are the perfect "fake relationship" trope couple. ;) In the background of the story comes the dual timeline with their ancestors located in the same spot. Just as in the first one, the dual timeline gives a little extra insight in the family history.

Topics: abuse, child neglect, panic attack, dementia

The only thing missing is...RECIPES! ;)

a lovely story with faith woven throughout. And I'm fairly sure our final book will be Lara and Asher. I can't wait for Lara's story since she has dealt with so much since the first book.

4 stars

Thank you to the author and publisher and NetGAlley for my ARC of this novel. All opinions are 100% my own.

Some things are better left in the past. At least, that’s what Beckett Mills believes as he pursues his fresh start in the small beach town of Avon. Unfortunately for his friend Harper, sometimes the past finds you no matter how hard you hide. When Harper is put in danger, Beck is quick to step in and provide a plan. Their partnership may end up being exactly what they both need.

The Island Bakeshop is everything you’d want in a perfect beach read. Roseanna M. White’s newest book in The Island Shop series is set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a fun and romantic setting for her dual-timeline stories. I loved The Island Bakeshop even more than the first book in the series. Harper and Beck have been my favorite characters, and it was fun watching them come together and join forces in this fake-dating trope adventure. Here’s to hoping that Lara and Asher are next and that we won’t have to wait long for their story!

"The Island Bookshop" by Roseanna M. White is a great follow-up book to the first in this series, "The Island Bookshop". This book could be read as a standalone, however some of the characters from the first are mentioned in this one so there would be spoilers if you read the books out of order.

I enjoyed the beachy setting, sweet romance and the bit of mystery surrounding the main character Harper's ex. The baked goods mentioned in the book are also very tasty sounding and descriptions definitely made me want to try some of the foods! I liked the strong family dynamics of Harper's family which were in contrast the to main male character Beckett's family. There are also some very strong friendships and accountability which were great aspects of the story.

Overall this is a great summer read for the beach, campground or wherever you go! I felt this was definitely a great sweet and clean romance with Christian faith elements.

The Island Bakeshop is a delightful read – perfect for beach reading or sitting by the campfire.

Beck and Harper’s story is a really sweet friends to more story. Beck is a swoon-worthy hero who steps in to defend Harper against a very terrible man, and in a hasty decision, Beck pretends to date Harper. It’s such a fun story!

There are characters to truly despise and ones to complete fall in love with.

I loved watching the solid relationship of Harper and her parents unfold, and how she connected with Beck’s dad.

There’s a lovely faith thread that ties the whole story together. And there's a dual time story about relatives in the Outer Banks.

I haven’t read the first book, but I had no difficulty in reading and understanding this one. I may have to go back and read the first one now!

The Island Bakeshop by Rosanna M. White is second in a series; the first in the series in The Island Bookshop. Reading the first is necessary for establishing characters and location in the second. Otherwise, I would have felt at a disadvantage and not understood all the nuances. The Island Bakeshop is a fake dating trope which adds humor to the story.

When Harper's (MFC) past comes barreling to town and Beckett (MMC) walks in on the interaction, Beckett steps in. Beckett has a hidden past as well. Will their friendship turned 'fake dating' reveal their pasts or will Harper and Beckett keep their pasts buried deep inside? Will the fake dating turn into more or will they simply remain friends?

I loved the witty dialogue, edge of your seat suspense, and setting around Cape Hatteras NC.
