It’s always a little bit of a gamble to pick up a debut (I got it for free as a promo so I guess it wasn’t in this case) but this book was a pleasant surprise. The place descriptions were really really lovely and the character interactions made me believe they actually like each other. Finn is, quite obviously, the best part of this book, but Dom and Nadya have their moments as well. I don’t prefer insta-love so I appreciates that their relationship was really slow burn. Maybe too slow? Maybe too slow. But no one let out any breaths they didn’t know they were holding so an extra star for that.
I received an early copy and I really liked it. It’s a lot different than what’s common in the fantasy genre right now; I especially liked that it features a folklore creature I hadn’t heard of before (dragons are fun, but there are SO MANY dragon books) and that it had a romantic subplot without the typical romantasy formula.
I had the privilege of reading this pre-pub and I am so excited about it. For anyone tired of Western fantasy, this is for you. Fantasy in the Arctic?? Yes, please. Magic. Love. Snark. All the things I love. It’s somehow both brutal and beautiful.
I had so much fun reading this book! The prose was lush, the characters were complex, and the storyline was exciting and engaging. It had my heart racing throughout and delivered a very satisfying ending. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves action, adventure, and romance.
