Mark Waid is an American comic book writer widely known for shaping modern superhero storytelling through influential runs on major characters at both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Raised in Alabama, he developed an early fascination with comic books, particularly classic stories featuring the Legion of Super-Heroes, whose imaginative scope and sense of legacy would later inform his own writing. He first entered the comics industry during the mid 1980s as an editor and writer for the fan magazine Amazing Heroes, before publishing his first professional comic story in Action Comics. Soon afterward he joined DC Comics as an editor, contributing to numerous titles and helping shape projects across the company. After leaving editorial work to focus on writing, Waid gained widespread recognition with his long run on The Flash, where he expanded the mythology of the character and co-created the youthful speedster Impulse. His reputation grew further with the celebrated graphic novel Kingdom Come, created with artist Alex Ross, which imagined a future DC Universe shaped by generational conflict among superheroes. Over the years he has written many prominent series, including Captain America, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Superman: Birthright, bringing a balance of optimism, character depth, and respect for comic book history to each project. Waid has also collaborated with notable artists and writers on major ensemble titles such as Justice League and Avengers, while contributing ideas that helped clarify complex continuity within shared superhero universes. Beyond mainstream superhero work, he has supported creator owned projects and experimental publishing models, including the acclaimed series Irredeemable and Incorruptible, which explored moral ambiguity within the superhero genre. He later took on editorial leadership roles at Boom Studios, guiding creative direction while continuing to write extensively. In subsequent years he expanded his involvement in publishing and digital storytelling, helping launch online comics initiatives and advocating for new distribution methods for creators. His work has earned numerous industry awards, including Eisner and Harvey honors, reflecting both critical acclaim and enduring popularity among readers. Throughout his career Waid has remained a passionate student of comic book history, drawing on decades of storytelling tradition while continually encouraging innovation within the medium. His influence extends across generations of readers and creators, and his stories continue to shape the evolving language of superhero comics around the world today through enduring characters imaginative narratives and thoughtful reinventions of familiar myths within popular culture and modern graphic storytelling traditions.
Another great issue from one of my favorite books of the year. I absolutely adore the way the characters are written here. I appreciate that you can tell the effort Bruce and Dick are both putting in to prove that with Bruce and Alfred is the right place for Dick.
Wow, all I can say for certain is that clayface and two-face are MUCH more effective than Grimaldi ever was! Give them a few weeks and their Hugo strange look alike scientist has already devised a formula to turn any of their men into clay face clones, with the abilities to replace everyone and anyone. Every high ranking mob boss, politician, cop has been taken and replaced over the last few weeks with clay men! And all under the radar of batman. He only realized it was happening once he was in the middle of their trap they setup with the Gordon they replaced. And still batman only realized it when he saw his hand melting on the bat signal. In order to escape all the cops surrounding them on the roof, who can even tell who is clay or not, batman sent down a smoke pellet that encapsulated the entire area and then he was able to use some of the acrobatic skills Robin has been teaching him to get off the roof and get them down to the Batmobile. But clayface has eyes and ears all over the city and even though batman is able to escape the cop cars…he can’t escape the police copters. Which also have missiles! Although the Batmobile went down in a burning mess of wreckage, batman and Robin were able to slip out with the ejector doors and slip into the sewers back to the bar cave. But even with all their enemies replaced and batman possibly dead, the dynamic duo of crime aren’t done yet…and now two face and clayface are ready to enact a plan that will make them super rich.
As the issue comes to an end Alfred is relieved to see batman and Robin home safely. Only to receive a knock at the main door. With the smell from the sewers they are not fit to receive guests so Alfred heads up to take a look. Meanwhile, Batman pulls out a clay finger he pocketed in the fight. It’s not the same as the sample from clayface, it’s more malleable and less stable. As if there is a shorter expiration date.s But when Alfred calls for them to come up immediately, the pair quickly put themselves together…only to find the CPS agent, Ms. Lyn, and a few cops. She announces that they are here to take Dick to a proper home. Dick immediately starts to lash out but Bruce calms him down and mentions that there must be a misunderstanding. That is when Ms Lyn holds up the newspaper from today, implicating Bruce and a bunch of other billionaires in stock fraud! The police are here for Bruce and because Dick refuses to leave without fighting back he is also placed in cuffs. Is this the big plan from clayface and two-face to make them rich?! What’s happening, this can’t be happening. The distraught moon from Alfred’s face as he stands in the door is enough to break anyone. NO!

Lemme tell you this run has been top notch the entire time. Every issue has me on the edge of my seat and wanting more. I love this story and the way the dynamic between Dick and Bruce has evolved over the story. I also love Bruce putting a seatbelt on Dick and learning acrobatic lingo. Like that’s precious! And Dick calling for Bruce and fighting so hard to stay with him??! It’s just SO good.
