Nowhere Land
If Haunting of Hill House had a baby with Stranger Things, Nowhere Land would be the result.
For centuries, legends have been told of a haunted land not far from Gloucester, Virginia. The local tribes had labelled it a place of demons. Wildlife is hardly seen there, and even insects avoid it. Sound fluctuates; nothing above a whisper one moment, only to come back minutes later. Those who dare to cross the land never make it out, mysteriously vanishing.
Parker Burkett and his sister, Lisa Polivka, inherit the land from their grandfather. They bring in a group of investigators to find if the stories behind the property are true. Parker has plans to turn it into a historical attraction and wants to debunk the ghost tales. He finds the paranormal group gone the next morning, except for a finger still wearing a ring lying in the loft of one of the buildings. It is the only evidence they'd been there.
Ben Neilson, who leads the paranormal team, Seekers of Paranormal World, wants to investigate, but first he must convince Parker to let them. He also wants longtime friend and psychic medium Neri Phelan to help his team.
Neri left the group a couple of years ago after the death of her younger sister on an investigation. She has a past with the cursed land, and she doesn't want anything to do with it. Nightmares and an attack from something dark that destroys her spirit guide help her decide that it's time to break the curse.
Will they solve the truth behind the legends? Or will Neri and Parker, along with Ben and his team, join the countless others over the centuries and become sacrifices to Nowhere Land.

Three of her nonfiction ghost books garnered Library of Virginia nominations. Her third ghost book, Virginia’s Haunted Historic Triangle: Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, and Other Haunted Locations, reached a second printing and is now a 2nd edition with extra new stories and ten new ghostly images added. Her horror short story, “Bottled Spirits,” was runner-up for the 2013 WSFA Small Press Award and is considered one of the seven best genre short fiction for that year. She has horror, fantasy, and science fiction stories published in various anthologies and magazines, plus an urban fantasy novel, a science fiction novella published too. Her horror poem, “Dementia,” that was published in HWA Poetry Showcase Vol VII in 2020, got her name mentioned as one of five whose poems the editor liked in Best Horror of the Year, Volume 13 released in 2021. She has six nonfiction ghost books, five published by Schiffer Publishing, and the sixth by Anubis Press, and has a nonfiction book, Werewolves, Dogmen, and Other Shapeshifters Stalking America that released April 26, 2022, from Dreampunk Press, plus a short story to be included in Dreampunk Press’ Halloween horror anthology, Blame It on the Pumpkin, coming October 2022. She had a horror short story in latest issue of Sirens Call Ezine and has an article included in Horror Addicts Guide to Life 2 just released end of April 2022.
Pamela and her husband live with one crazy black cat (who thinks she should take precedence over her mistress’s writing most days). Along with writing, Pamela has acted on stage and film and investigates the paranormal for episodes of Paranormal World Seekers for AVA Productions. Nowhere Land by Pamela Kinney starts with a bang as a group of ghost hunters in Virginia who’ve been hired to investigate a property outside of Gloucester called Burkett make a fatal discovery - that there is definitely paranormal activity in Nowhere Land.
Psychic medium Neri is asked to join her old team of paranormal investigators led by her friend Ben to find out what happened to the first team, among whom was her ex-fiancé, John.
Neri also has a history with Nowhere Land, and it is calling her. Though she’s afraid, she knows the evil that dwells there has to be stopped, so she finally agrees to join them.
Part folklore of hauntings and cursed land, part ghost-hunting adventure, and just enough romance to make it fun, Nowhere Land also has relatable characters who make us want to follow them (and see them exorcise their demons - inner and outer). Kinney does a masterful job of allowing us to experience the story from the characters’ points of view which both lets us get to know the characters better but also allows us to experience the same disorientation - and fear - that they experience, and this is what takes Nowhere Land from folklore to horror.
Stray Thoughts:
it was fun to recognize a lot of the local spots mentioned from my time living in Richmond & Hampton Roads.
The most unrealistic part of the whole book was not the evil supernatural entity but that multiple characters put their travel clothes in the laundry immediately upon returning home. Who does that?

The disappearance of the investigative team serves as a powerful escalation, reinforcing the idea that the land cannot be easily studied or controlled.

From the beginning of this book to the last page I was sincerely involved in this book. I knew I would enjoy this book due to the hints at folklore and a medium. The land that needed to be investigated was inhabited by something worse than a demon or spirit. The scariest part was reading about the characters being in danger even after they left Nowhere Land. The way the author describes what happens to each person is actually terrifying. As you read this book, you begin to feel as though you are transported to the very location. I was really spooked at the idea of no sound in the forest. A few times I paused my reading to make sure I could hear noises in the house. This book really had the required atmosphere to scare the reader. I would not want to be a paranormal investigator if this is what happens.

I violated the Read What You Own challenge to buy this book and I'm so happy I did!
Parker Burkett and his sister inherit land that local natives and legend described as a place of demons. Parker hires a group of paranormal investigators to debunk the ghostly lore so that he can turn the site into a tourist destination. Everything goes crazy from there.
The opening scene of Nowhere Land is explosive and truly frightening as the hired team found exactly what they were trying to debunk. It didn't end well. Nothing was found of this group but one lone finger. I was listening to the audiobook for this part while walking alone in the woods and it scared the daylights out of me! I was hooked. I had to know if the curse of Nowhere Land could be broken.
The atmosphere was dark, the characters likeable and well drawn, I felt uneasy throughout my reading experience. I'm not typically one for a paranormal story but if there are more like this out there, I'm all in. Kinney's writing style is lean, straight-forward and inviting and I look forward to trying some of her non-fiction work next! 🖤📚

What happens when paranormal investigators go missing? That's what we have here as Parker invites a group to investigate this cursed land and they don't return. With the help of Neri and Ben, they must determine what has happened and how cursed this land really is. Pamela keeps us on the edge of our seats for the whole ride, and the characterization is spot on. Part folklore, part horror, and all rip-roaring suspense, this is a story that is hard to leave until the ride is over. Then you're ready for whatever Pamela has in store for us next.

Folklore, psychic mediums and souls trapped like jello in a mold. I enjoyed my time in Nowhere Land. I can appreciate the time the writer took to craft a tale that shows she did ample research on paranormal phenomena and the process of investigation.

Near Gloucester Virginia is a patch of land. This land has a past history strange things occurs there. Can the paranormal investigators find out what is happening? Creepy
