Probably my favourite Charlie Cochet book so far ❤️
Still, it’s not a 5 star rating, but not far off, either.
Firstly, let me gush (again) about Greg B. narrating this series - I love him switch to southern/texan accent and back, and the way he drawls darlin’ makes me melt 🫠 so good. So so good.
As for the story: be aware that there are many characters, so many I need to write MANY in caps: all the previous couples from Four King Security, as well as a few side characters that are set up for upcoming books (can’t WAIT for Finch to find his match). Nevertheless, if you’re not trying to place each and every single one of them and just go with the flow, it’s a lot of fun.
Here, the main characters are Jay, King’s prickly and highly efficient assistant, and his nemesis Ryden, one of King’s men, a former marine who’s been in love with Jay for years, but always manages to antagonise him. Seeing them finally admit their feelings is fun, as well as the action plot (some evil ex marines doing evil things who set their eyes on Jay because of reasons I won’t spoil here).
Again, as most times with this author, the action scenes are well written, I really could see the book picked up and made into a movie.
I really REALLY hope we’ll get Finch’s book soon 🤞

Back with the Kings - a favourite place to be
I was much happier with the plotline in this one than book one, no behaviour which didn't make sense here thankfully.
Instead, Ry and Jay get their enemies to lovers fratching on, pigtail pulling and attention seeking, as they fight actually admitting what everyone else knows - that they've got a thing for the other that they don't want to own up about.
The secondary story element in this one also worked better for me. It wasn't beyond the realms of possibly, in fact I'm pretty sure stuff like that has happened in reality.
The only thing I found slightly unlikely was how the baddies managed to always be one step ahead, given that our guys are supposed to be the best.
But, that's a minor niggle, the rest of it was fast paced and full of action, leading to a satisfying conclusion.
I'm also intrigued by where the next book is likely to go and I did appreciate a lot that side of the narrative and how Jay adjusted his own recollection of his relationship with his brother Finch.

I definitely liked this one more than the first one in the series. But this seemed more plot heavy with some romance sprinkled in. I feel like the real romance part didn’t start until way after 60% of the book. They had a few kisses but then after a point it kind of went full steam. It felt like the I love yous came out of no where. I mean yeah they have been circling each other for years but they’ve also been at odds for years and then all of a sudden a few encounters warrants love declarations? Idk it didn’t work for me. I wasn’t super interested in the plot either. It was kind of confusing with too many players and too many parts. I really didn’t care about it to be honest. It was nice seeing the other couples from the other two series but I would not recommend reading this series without reading those first. This book kind of jumps in and mentions people you would have no idea about if you hadn’t read the other books.
I didn’t like the whole Jay’s brother situation. Jay had literal trauma from his brother bullying him when they were younger. Trauma that he’s brought into his adult life and into every relationship and when his brother shows up it was all tied up into a nice bow. I didn’t like how it played out and I didn’t like how King wanted to offer him a job knowing what Jay went through and Jay was all for it even before he had that serious conversation with his brother about their past. It just felt like there was a new character for the next book just for the sake of it. I may read the next book but idk I’m still not a fan of jay’s brother, Finch. He didn’t really take accountability for how he acted in the past and I feel like it was glossed over how he very much still messed with Jay in the present. Always making fun of what he was wearing and how he wasn’t manly enough. Like where was the convo for the stuff he was still saying? Didn’t sit right with me.

The only downside is the friction Ryden has with King’s assistant, Jay Starling. The man that comes to work every day decked out with outrageous bowties, and never ever fails to get under his skin.
Jay knows he’s a valuable member of the Four Kings family and he’s secure in his place there. Now if only Ryden would stop picking on him!! Ryden can’t seem to leave him alone, and Jay finds it is more than infuriating. Neither man sees what everyone else does though: that there is attraction there; attraction that Ryden and Jay don’t even recognize.
Of course, trouble rears its ugly head, and the family at Four Kings rallies themselves around Jay as the mystery deepens and the team starts to unravel all the facts. With Jay in danger, Ryden at last acknowledges his attraction to Jay, and Jay can now take a deep breath and do the same. Just as the two men are finding their way, things take another turn. Jay’s brother arrives on the scene...and danger knocks at their door. It’ll take the whole team to save the day so Jay and Ryden can have their happily ever after.
As usual in this series, the characters are all very well drawn. Ryden comes with plenty of baggage...but you know the whole team will stand with him. Jay is about as opposite he can be from Ryden, but he has an inner strength that was good to see. The two had always had chemistry... right from the start, which had begun long before this 2nd book. It was good to see them finally move past the blocks that were holding them back. There were times that it felt that their relationship moved a little too fast... not the physical side, or them acknowledging their feelings, but their declarations of love. On the other hand, they had been in love for a long, long time.
It seemed that Jay’s relationship with his brother was solved way too quickly. It would have been nice to see their issue explored a bit more, or perhaps just left with the beginnings of healing between them with more to be explored later; as Finch, Jay’s brother, is clearly a possible future character in this series.
I’m a big fan of the Four Kings world and all the characters that Charlie Cochet has created. If you’re a fan of this series or this author, you should absolutely pick this one up.

5 stars for the narration, 3.75 for the story - 4 stars overall.
The gang's all here for another enjoyable round of hokum and shenanigans with the Kings and Wild Cards as Ryden and Jay - who have been striking sparks off each other for years - finally get a clue and get their HEA. There's action, explosions and a lot of the great camaraderie that is such an important part of these stories, all wrapped up in a fabulous performance by Greg Boudreaux.

Overall, I enjoyed this one.
I wasn't exactly wowed by it, but I did enjoy it more than the first book in this series, so that's a plus.
I liked Ryden and Jay together, they were cute and sweet. I do wish this had given us more heat, more sex scenes, but what we did get was good. We just got about...2ish sex scenes so there definitely could have been more.
This was also a bit slow going for me as I wasn't terribly interested in the plot of it all. It was a little exciting here or there, but I just didn't care about these bad guy ex-marines illegally shipping illegal weapons 🤷♀️ It made for an exciting climax, I'll give it that, but the thread of that being the overarching plot was not terribly interesting all the time, tbh.
But Ryden and Jay carried this story, and that was a plus, even if I felt the transition from them "not getting along" to being together and in love was a bit too fast. I think more time should have been spent with them dating and everything before getting to the love confession, even if I did believe it ultimately and loved their chemistry together.
I liked the introduction of Jay's brother too, who he has a complicated relationship with. It will definitely be interesting to get Finch's love story as well, and it was nice to see these two brothers whose parents basically unwittingly pitted them against each other come back together in adulthood and start to mend their relationship.
So yeah, could this have been better? Absolutely. This author herself has done better. But the couple was good, with good chemistry and I enjoyed them together throughout, and I enjoyed it more than the first in this spin-off series, so those were all positives for sure.
Definitely can't wait for more from this author. Until then! 😘

We finally get the Ryden and Jay romance we've been waiting for in this one, as the two who fought like cats and dogs for years are thrown together as Jay joins Ryden at a military wedding.
Both spot something going on that's suspect and soon Jay is dodging kidnapping and Ryden is his protection.
Along with Saint.
There's crimes going on along with the usual Wild Cards shenanigans and the arrival of Jay's actual brother Finch.
Another great book.

Calling His Bluff is the second book in the The Kings: Royal Flush series. In my opinion you should start reading this series after reading the Four Kings Security series and The Kings: Wild Cards series. I have waited what feels like forever for Ryden and Jay's story and it was definitely worth it. I love these two completely different but equally stubborn guys. The story had everything I expect from a Charlie Cochet book steam, laughs, tears, and a great plot. I loved seeing some of my favorite characters again. I would definitely recommend this book and series as 5 star reads.

OH MY...this was a fun read. I absolutely love enemies to lovers. This thing between Jay and Ryden lasted for six long years and came to a head at the beginning of the book. Which was great...I hate long drag out unnecessary drama. Yeah I missed book one but I was able to follow without any issues. The guys were great and the banter was hilarious. This book was full entertainment with a little bit of mayhem but all in all a wonderful romance.

I love the Kings and the entire extended universe. These guys are always so much fun. I love the teasing and the snark. And of course you knew the antipathy between Ryden and Jay was always going on culminate in them realizing that really the loved not hated each other.
Jay had to have a spin of steal to deal with the shenanigans at the office and keep all of those alpha males in line and where they needed to be. He may not have been a military guy or anything, but he wasn't defenseless. I loved him proving himself to the family he always thought hated him. And well his brother is interesting in his own right.
Jay and Ryden's sparring and tricks were funny, but seeing them find each other was better. They're a great couple and knowing that Jay was in danger turned Ryden around real quick.

Calling His Bluff by Charlie Cochet is the second book in her The Kings Royal Flush series. I suggest that you read the other Kings books before this one in order to understand their work environment as well as the characters that make their presence known in this one. Ryden Foster is a marine who went through a very dark time in his life. Luckily, the men who worked for Four Kings Security in St. Augustine saw something in him and helped him recover, get into therapy, and move forward to a more normal life. He is from Texas and now works in risk assessment with Red and Saint is his best friend. He has been with Four Kings for 6 years and during that time the bane of his existence has been Jay Starling, the head of Four Kings executive assistant. He thinks he’s annoying pretentious, prissy, and that the world revolves around him. Meanwhile Jay thinks Ryden is a big manchild with no sense of self and they both do everything they can in order to bother and get even with each other, including Jay sending Ryden out as part of security for a child’s dinosaur ranch birthday party that involves glitter, and Ryden putting a fake spider in Jay’s desk that makes him go bonkers. This has been going on for the whole 6 years and comes to a head when Ryden makes some unflattering comments to Jay, which he is in the habit of doing. He then makes a true apology and asks for a truce which leads to a kiss. When Saint can’t attend a marine wedding, Jay volunteers to go and something weird with some of the marines there happens when Jay overhears them talking about a shipment and he is caught, but tells them he is looking for Ryden. Of course, Ryden messes it up saying he doesn’t think Jay should be involved so he leaves because he doesn’t like being seen as ‘less than’. The next day an exporter, Gibson, was supposed to meet with Lucky but he ended up being killed in an auto explosion and everyone thinks the marines at the wedding might be involved. When Jay is almost kidnapped, Ryden takes him back to his house where Jay is surprised to see he likes gardening and has a pantry fetish and they are both feeling an attraction that may have been there since they first met. Four Kings are excellent at what they do and they start digging deeper into the 5 marines and Gibson and aren’t liking what they see since it involves exporting military weapons. When they do some intel that involves another explosion and body, they call in Finch, Jay’s brother who he hasn’t had contact with in several years due to a falling out, who is a marine who was in a battle with some of the marines they are investigating. Meanwhile Ryden and Jay are getting closer and Ryden tells him about his dark times and how he got better which eventually leads to some hot love scenes and saying they love each other. They plan their mission to get the marines and Jay is going to stay in the surveillance van. But of course it goes awry and Jay gets kidnapped. Luckily his training helps him until Ryden and the other guys can rescue him in a spectacular way. Jay makes amends with Finch by both apologizing and they decide to start over while Ryden and Jay start the rest of their lives together. I really enjoyed this book as I have all of the others in these series. All of the men of Four Kings are great guys and usually get into hilarious situations but are very serious when it comes to their work. There is no exception here. Ryden has come a long way in his life and is finally in a good place. Yet Jay gets under his skin and the only way he can act on it is to do and say dumb things to him. Jay is sassy, confident, and smart and doesn’t put up with anything, especially Ryden’s nonsense. But they both realize that maybe they had an attraction from the start and just didn’t know what to do about it but are very happy when they finally make a real truce and it leads to love. There is a lot of action and suspense in this story, as there are in all of them, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat, especially since you think things might go one way but they go another. I highly recommend this book, especially if you like books with some humor, men who drive each other crazy yet find love together, and lots of action along the way to them getting their happy ending.

Calling His Bluff is the second book in the Royal Flush series, which is a spin-off of ‘The Kings’ series. It stars Ryden Foster, ex-Marine, and Jay Starling, Kingston’s executive assistant. This is told in third person from Jay and Ryden’s povs.

First the cover, I like it. It’s different from the usual contemporary MM stories. It matches the first one in the series, too. The blurb gives the basic background to the relationship between Ryden and Jay. It doesn’t give the mission that’s in the background of the story.
I’ve read a few of this author’s books, but maybe only one in the King’s series. There are a lot of returning characters. I’m a member of the author’s Facebook group so I recognized some names like King, Chip the dog, and the topic of fish snacks, but honestly, I was often lost. I understand that the other characters are necessary because they are part of the team, but I found it difficult to follow along with who the people were and how they related to everyone. Therefore, I will have to say that this story is not a stand-alone. You pretty much have to read every book to submerse yourself into this one and, for me, I don’t want to have to read a whole series to get into a book. Towards the end of this story, one of the returning characters explains to a new character, who each person is an how they are connected to another character and how those characters met. I thought that was an interesting way to clear up the name connections, but there were still too many, and it didn’t give the story behind the characters.
The romance between Ryden and Jay interested me the most. I’m guessing their fighting/teasing has probably been going on in other books. I thought the mission wasn’t written about very deeply, it was just used to move along Ryden and Jay’s relationship and bring in a new character. I did like the part about what happens to Jay during the climax scenes etc. Ryden has been with the Kings for six years, he arrived in bad mental and emotional condition. He’s not good at expressing his emotions. It also seems that Jay is a bit of a diva and expects people to like him and doesn’t take well to when people don’t. He may seem like he doesn’t care, but he does. It’s not just because he’s attracted to Ryden. I didn’t like how Ryden had to prove that he noticed Jay, like all the clothes he wore on certain dates. To me, that’s Jay having to be the center of attention, and only when he is, does he start to think Ryden is sweet. Jay was difficult to like. He seemed to have a chip on his shoulder.
I do question the flan scene in the epilogue. How did Jay get it to the island from Florida without it falling apart? Flan is delicate and needs to be kept cold. It was a cute scene, but was rather a stretch of the imagination for me.

4.25 stars - I love Charlie Cochet. Her books are always a guilty pleasure for me. So when I saw this spinoff, I had to grab it. Once again, we have a story of ex-military with backstories finding their other halves, and Ms. Cochet gives us everything we loved about the previous books. Here, we have Jay, King’s faithful assistant, and Ryden, one of the Marines, who have been at each other since they met. Years of getting under each other’s skin, pranking each other and generally just pissing each other off. No requests by the other guys, including King, have been able to push a ceasefire with these two.
But then, things heat up, and the guys find themselves smack in the middle of an operation involving some of their other friends. Jay and Ry are sort of pushed together which has the result of them realizing they really don’t know that much about each other. Their relationship pretty much blossoms from there, as their eyes are opened up about their feelings. Unfortunately, they still have the current situation to deal with.
I really love seeing all of these guys (and their pets) together again as the team goes to work. Chip is still a strong member of the team as well. We know everyone already, with the exception of Jay’s brother, who shows up and forces Jay to deal with a few familial issues from his past. All in all, it was a very healing installment as relationships go, especially for Jay. We have grown to love him as the one who runs everything in the office, taking care of even the smallest of details. And it is easy to see why he is loved by all, even Ryden. This is a pretty big family already, but it is easy to keep them straight, and I’m really hoping there is still room to grow. Either way, this was another hit for me from Ms. Cochet.

I had so much fun returning to the world of Four Kings Security, and Jay and Ryden's romance was a total delight. Ryden and Jay claimed they couldn't stand each other at the start of the book, and between their heated conversations and occasional book throwing spats, it would have been easy to assume that was all there was to it. Even if Jay was in denial about why Ryden got under his skin so badly, Ryden was all too aware of how attracted he was to Jay -- and that only made his foot-in-mouth syndrome worse. It was endlessly entertaining to watch the two of them fumble around and push each other's buttons, but when push came to shove they didn't hesitate to look out for one another. I'll admit that initially I wasn't sure where the overall storyline was headed, but as Jay and Ryden got pulled into the tangled web of phony Marines and a global shipping enterprise's tragedy, there was more than enough to pique my interest. There's nothing quite like a bit of danger to put things in perspective, and when Jay became unexpectedly involved in the Kings' latest case, Ryden's true feelings for the man came out. I thought his and Jay's relationship was paced out nicely, with a good balance of steamy bits and more tender moments to make me believe in the love building between them. Investigation-wise, I was on the edge of my seat as I got towards the end of the book, eager and terrified to see how far the Kings would have to go to root out the individuals responsible. The twists and turns surprised me, Jay and his brother were able to patch things up and move on from their rocky past, and Jay and Ryden's relationship felt like it was off to a promising start. All in all I thought this was an excellent addition to the series and it's motivated me to go back and re-read the original books all over again!

Charlie Cochet has a talent for crafting stories that feed our fascination with this special company and its members. They are an eclectic group, but their strong bonds, diverse backgrounds, active connections, and respect from law enforcement make them rich material for storytelling. With the excellent character development Charlie excels at, these stories make you stay up past bedtime to enjoy these well-written adventures.

This is book two in The Kings: Royal Flush series and I. LOVED it!!! I’m a little behind in my Kings—I’ve been buying ‘em but I haven’t gotten around to reading some of ‘em yet but, oh my gosh, this reminded me what I love so much about the author’s writing and has me craving not only to read the ones I haven’t read but also to do a reread of the ones that I have.
Ryden and Jay, even with all their arguing and pranks, were adorable. I think Ryden was my favorite though, not that Jay wasn’t sweet but, Ryden EXCELLED at putting his foot in his mouth so that even when he was trying his best to be sweet, Jay, because he had been teased so much when he was younger, would take it the wrong way and fly off the handle. He needed a big ol’ hug!
These guys, seriously, they were the cutest! They were like two young boys with a crush—Ryden especially, putting a mechanical spider in Jay’s desk, spoiling the ending of romance books Jay was reading…there were many other instances but those are the only ones I can think of right offhand. It wasn’t ALL Ryden though, Jay had his moments as well, changing Ryden’s name within his email account, assigning him to a kid’s birthday party (when he wasn’t actually security—his job was risk assessment) which was a riot by the way, and just ONE of my favorite parts of the book. There were really too many to count making this a must read! Grab it today!!! Easily a 5 star read!!

Calling his bluff is book 2 in the series and is best enjoyed with the rest of the Kings universe.
Jay is the glue that keeps Kings Security running, he is a flamboyant friendly guy but he just can't seem to get along with Ryden.
Ryden has been at Kings for a few years following hitting rock bottom, when the Kings pulled him out of the hole he was in. He likes working there if it wasn't for how infuriating Jay is on the daily. There is very obvious attraction between these guys, but with both having walls up due to past experiences they both misjudged the others intentions. Ryden's inability to keep him foot out of his mouth and Jay's defensive reactions mean these guys are more towards frenemies than colleagues.
When a wedding ends up full of suspicious activity, things getting dangerous. Can they see past their issues to the real person or will their past continue to dictate their future?
I really enjoyed this book. Jay is a pocket rocket and goes through quite the character arc with some sobering realisations coming late on from his past.
Ryden is a bit like a bull in a china shop in terms of feeling and with the emotional literacy of a child but slowly becomes more aware of his self destructive tendencies. With all the usual suspense, action and essential mayhem from the Kings characters, this is a great escape from reality, where HEA's are hard won and well deserved.

Ryden and Jay finally get their HEA. I have loved these characters from the first time I read about them. Jay with his unflappable and yet volatile personality and poor Ryden with his foot in mouth syndrome as well as his efforts to fit in with the Kings and Wild Cards (cough.. calling King Daddy…cough).
I really enjoyed reading about Jay and Ryden and we always knew that the tension and verbal foibles was due to repressed feelings on both sides and there is a lot of relationship building in the book; however, I think some of the heat was missing that would come from the years of built up antagonization. I could see them purposely razzing each other up and continuing the pranks just to get a rise out of each other even after they solidified their relationship.
I liked that this book took the time for each MMC to be able to express themselves and why they say and act the way they have so no more misunderstandings will pop-up. It was great to see such openness, but it also helps they have known each other for years rather than having just met.
I would have liked to see more funny shenanigans though, it was a bit too Op heavy, which I know had to happen, but it was just a little more flat in the hijinks that keep the dark/light balance (see previously mentioned Daddy comment).
I am so glad to see the foreshadowing eluding to another book in the series. YAY, can’t wait, another newbie to break-in.

I thought this was a really fun read and I really liked Ryden and Jay! These two are very much opposites and have spent years arguing, pranking, annoying and frustrating each other but it’s pretty easy to see that it’s not genuine dislike, quite the opposite in fact and it’s about time these two figure out their real feelings. A wedding with a weird encounter with questionable marines and a surprising death of a shipping boss lead them into an investigation that has them both seeing new sides of each other and finally admitting how they really feel.
Again, I thought this was a lot of fun and great to be back in the Kings world. Ryden and Jay have great banter and tension at first and it brings out their great chemistry too. They both have their defenses up around each other but once they open up to each other they are so freaking sweet together. I absolutely adored them together and they made my heart so happy! They really are just so perfect for each other. There is also, of course, a great mix of action and mystery as the team comes together to figure out who these marines are and what they are up to. We also learn a lot about Jay and his brother. That relationship surprised me but I was really happy to see what happened there. Overall, a great read, it’s entertaining, sexy and thrilling all at the same time. A fantastic addition to the Kings and it makes me want to go back and re-read all while looking forward to more of this group!

Oh how I have been anticipating their story since they first met! They met several years ago in a book as part of the ‘Four Kings Security’ series but Ryden was in a very bad place emotionally after his dischange from the Marines. Jay and Ryden have had a mutual relationship of driving the other crazy with pranks and all. This was basically their form of foreplay all these years without them realising it until it’s pointed out to them.
The action storyline was intriguing and I enjoyed the investigation, the takedown etc.
I do agree with other reviewers in wishing there was more romance in a book whose genre is listed as “romance” but of the romance there is, it is well done and I could feel the sparks between them as they finally made the transition from antagonistic colleagues to lovers.
The story is on the shorter side so both the action and the relationship are fast paced but it doesn’t feel too rushed, or crazy unrealistic in its pacing either. I always adore reading stories in the Kings’ world and seeing what they are all up to. I would not consider this a standalone as there is so much backstory needed, not just about Ryden and Jay, but also understanding all of the relationships between the friends. The addition of Jay’s brother was unexpected and I am excited to learn more about him in upcoming books.

Great to be back with the Kings family.
Ryder and Jay finally get their story told and what a ride it is. I love how 5ft 4in Jay is just full of sass and so very confident. These attributes are balanced perfectly with his sweetness, kindness and the softer side of his personality. With thanks to the Kings Security training he’s also able to well defend himself which comes in very handy at times. Ryden did not make a very good first impression when introduced to Jay, reasons for this do become clear later, and this leads to a longstanding feud between them that had me laughing out loud at some of the antics. Circumstances have these two wonderful men come to the attention of the villains of the piece. This leads to plenty of action, danger and drama as they and the other team members do their utmost to stop the villains and bring the Kings family members home in one piece.
There’s plenty of banter throughout this very enjoyable and engaging read as well as some steam mixed with softness and sweet. I loved how Ryden and Jay overcome their feuding to see what is right in front of them and work towards their well deserved their hard earned HEA. Naturally the other Kings Security members all play their parts and provide plenty of entertainment as per usual.
The sneak peek of the next couple has left me eager for more.

Calling His Bluff has the classic Charlie Cochet formula of sass, found family, military worship, sweetness and (varying levels of) comedy. It mostly ticked all the boxes of what I expected although this one started a bit rough for me. I struggle with adults behaving like children and there is a lot of that in the Kings universe so it wasn't missing here. I have no idea of the ages of Jay and Ryden but I was sure they're in their 30s (and the Kings and Wild Cards are definitely there) but the maturity levels in this universe is low. I get that it's supposed to be comedy but it rarely lands for me. Pranks are one thing (I guess) but book throwing as romance is NOT it.
As far as Jay and Ryden as a couple, they were fine and kinda cute once they got it together. After six years of antagonism built on Jay's insecurity about perceived weakness and Ryden's history of his injury and getting his life together from a bad place, they struggled but made their banter work. I do think the "I love yous" weren't believable and came super quick but meh. I appreciated the intro of Finch and the full circle resolution and reconciliation there, though I'm only mildly interested in a romance for him and I have no recollection of his projected love interest. But even with all that, I still enjoy the seeing the Kings again and would mildly recommend this one.
As far as Jay and Ryden as a couple, they were fine and kinda cute once they got it together. This is the second book in The Kings: Royal Flush series. This is a continuation from the Four Kings Security series and The Kings: Wild Cards series. While you can read this book and enjoy it, you really should read these books in order. Otherwise you will lose the nuisances of who is who and why they act the way that they do. This is the story of Ryden Foster and Jay Starling. From the first time these two met at Four Kings Security, sparks have flown but not those of romance. Both rubbed each other the wrong way and got under each other's skin. It was nothing but sass, humor and practical jokes since then. Both are in denial about how much they care about the other. The entire office can see it but not these two. Ryden is an ex-Marine and security agent. He hit rock bottom and with the help of the guys, built himself up to a respected member of the team. As with a lot of these characters, he doesn't do so well with emotions. Every time he speaks with Jay, he manages to stick both feet in his mouth and make things worse. Jay is the lynchpin that holds this company together. He is smart, witty and organized. He is also instantly defensive anytime he speaks with Ryden, adding to the problem. While being a last minute fill in for a wedding that Ryden has to attend, Jay overhears something he shouldn't. Once the guys in the office know, the investigation is on. Then a failed kidnapping attempt ups the ante even more. It also forces Jay and Ryden to actually get to know each other. This is their story. The book is very well written and easy to read. Like all the other books in the series, there is military teamwork and bonding. Along with a healthy dose of loving and caring shown through teasing each other. I really enjoyed this book.

I like this installment of the Kings Security univserse.
We meet again all the guys I fell in love back when the series started and I always felt Ryden need someone to counteract his stubbornness and also deserves love after what happened in his past.
Jay's trust issues are harder to crack.
There is chemistry when they finally get together.
These two start as enemies who just don't acknowledge what everyone else already sees what is absolutely clear, they are attracted but just don't realise it.
Most of this is not on-page though, the story starts with Ryden's behaviour and jealousy coming to a head and it evolves from there.
The mystery part of it is well done and that part of the book is definitely my favourite.
But what was less ideal for me was the speed the romance developed, from hating and pranking each other to making out and declarations of love was so fast, it felt like the author realised the book is coming towards the end and she has to get them together.
I felt the same about the side story between Jay and his brother, that was all sorted in a matter of one chapter.
This book was several times delayed and it feels like the second half was rushed to finish it off.
