A porch pirate learns a terrifying lesson. A woman who suspects her husband is cheating hires a private detective, but gets way more than she bargained for. A daughter watching her father be consumed by cancer makes a daring deal with a nefarious being that comes back to haunt her.
All this and much more from a collection compiled to make you uncomfortable in the comfort of wherever you’ll be reading them from. All that’s left to do now, dear readers, is open the book and watch nightmares come to life.

Let me preface this review by saying that horror is more than gore, slashers and jump scares. Vivian Kasley created old-school horror stories reminiscent of Eerie comics and Tales from the Crypt. The stories are pulpy, intense and fun. The cover awakened my 80s heart. I could not wait to dive into the world of stories. The collection includes a variety of 18 weird tales that range from deceiving death to revenge. It is filled with scarecrows, mermaids, werewolves and blood-thirsty appliances. Skin Tags was a terrifying body horror story that made me search my body several times. There is something for everyone.
This is a collection of 15 horror stories that feel reminiscent of old school horror comics. These stories are eerie, unusual and some are just straight up strange. But that's what works to its advantage. With all collections there will be stories you like and some you don't, Canned Tuna, Roly Poly and Christmas Cookies were my favourites. I liked the rest but these three had the atmosphere and the pay off at the end of the story which suited me. This is a collection that you are going to enjoy reading if you love old school horror. The stories are perfect length to read on a tea break or to power through the whole book.
Fun book! Like many books of short stories, there were some hits and some misses for me, but Heart-Shaped Box was my favorite one, which is interesting because it was far from the scariest. It was the emotional drama in that story that really hooked me. Also really liked Squid’s Ink, Room for Change, and Christmas Cookies.
All’s Well That Ends Well is a collection of 18 short horror stories. Aliens, ghosts, werewolves, mermaids, scarecrows, the grim reaper and much more. There are even a couple of Halloween and Christmas tales. There is truly something for everyone. Some of the stories were gross and unnerving, and some were straight up heartbreaking. Almost all of the stories were enjoyable except one that just want my cup of tea. Definitely worth a read if you love horror!
My favorites were
Maternal Drive Ragamuffin Squid’s Ink
I was given this ARC by Brigids Gate Press through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
From Vivian Kasley comes a short-story collection perfect for some spooky reading sessions. The stories range from straight horror to a bit more campy and there's definitely something for everyone. The cover is what initially caught my interest for this book, it's pure nostalgia.
One of my favorites was "Canned Tuna" about a curious mermaid who ends up being entertainer at kids birthday parties after getting too close to a human and being captured. This story plus all the others can be read in a sitting or two and are enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend this book.
I recieved this ARC from net galley in return for my honest review.
A debut collection from a great short story teller. All's Well That Ends Well includes tales of revenge and misfortune. Tragic tales of grief and longing, tales that will hold you captive as you yearn to discover the outcome. The collection has a strong 1980s vibe with many of the stories feeling cinematic. One in particular, Skin Tags, a grossly nauseating body horror tale, reminded me of those mad horror movies from the 1950s, even though it's not set in that era. It's just a vibe, if you know what I mean. The author makes to easy for the reader to get inside the characters' heads. In the murk of Lake Sludge and the tattoo parlour of Squid's Ink, the chaotic home of young Gunner in Christmas Cookies, and the sleazy motel (not dissimilar to that which features in Robert Bloch's Psycho) in the story Room For Change. Favourites include Catch and Release (as published in The Jewish Book of Horror), Roly Poly, Squid's Ink and Porch Pirate, along with the titular tale, All's Well That Ends Well which features an anthropomorphic fridge no less, and is darkly comedic. I'm sure you will have your own favourites. Before I end, I would like to give a shout-out to cover artist Ruth Anna Evans for doing such a grand job of the artwork.
When I was a teenager, I loved to sneakily watch Tales From The Crypt. As the shrivelled Crypt Keeper sprang up, my heart would pound a bit faster as I eagerly waited to see what story would unfold that episode. And that’s how I felt as I started each one of Vivian Kasley’s short stories.
Each story feels completely unique in the way it is narrated, and the author shows her skills in writing from different people’s perspectives, irrespective of whether they are old, young, or somewhere in the middle.
The tales are deliciously dark and visceral, sometimes from the way death inveigles its way into a situation, and sometimes from the description of gruesome acts. I loved how the author put me in the position of a voyeur, watching each character’s descent into insanity, deep catharsis or an eternal slumber.
Each story is like reading a tiny novella, entering at a moment in time and accompanying the characters through an arc of turmoil, revenge, despair, until we breathlessly reach the end.
Although I had several favourites, Raggamuffin has stayed with me the most - there’s something about scarecrows that has always made me uncomfortable and after reading this story, I think I’ll be keeping a closer eye on the next one I see…
A great read for horror fans, I’m giving this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and will probably be re-reading it at Halloween!
All’s Well That Ends Well by Vivian Kasley, from the first story with Hal, to the very last this book is packed full of interesting vastly different and compulsively readable short stories. They ranged from sci-fi to horror mystery and they’re all top notch. In the first story a man gets tired of being woken up by loud music from the car that goes down his street at two in the morning, and another story a woman cannot get rid of the skin tags that keep growing all over her body, my favorite story is with Pearl a mermaid that a man finds and forces her to work for him and this is besides wanting pearl to marry him because he loves her something pearl doesn’t want to do but what can a mermaid do when she’s landlocked, these stories are brilliantly done there’s way more than the three I’ve mentioned and they’re all so good I wish I had another book of short stories by the author because they were that awesome. I absolutely loved it and definitely recommend it. #NetGalley, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview,#VivianKasey, #AllsWellThatEndsWell,
It's such a great collection of short stories. Great tales of revenge and some a little gross 🤣
Canned Tuna - such a sad tale but ends the way it should. Glad Gemma gets what she needs in the end! 😊
Dead deception - I liked the creative way revenge is served in this one. Definitely different but funny and well served! No escaping karma.
Heart shaped box - another sad story which shows naivety but also desperation.
Skin tags - a wonderfully gross tale to put you off astronauts 😂🤣 am sure I'd just got to the Drs if I found myself in that situation although I'm not sure they'd have been able to help in this situation!!
Catch and release - Raz has some explaining to do and it's unfair that Asher and Naomi have had to suffer. I think Razs time is running out though. If you like fish then you might not be so keen after this one!
Raggamuffin - I love Halloween and spooky stories are an absolute must for that time of year. This is such a fun spooky tale and would be great told around a campfire 🔥
"All's Well That Ends Well" by Vivian Kasley is dark, unsettling, fast-paced, and grotesque short story collection!
My favorite stories included "Canned Tuna," "Heart Shaped Box," and "Squid's Ink."
"Canned Tuna" is about a man capturing a mermaid and forcing her to perform at children's birthday parties.
"Heart-Shaped Box" is about a girl who makes a deal with Death to save her father and faces the consequences of breaking the deal years later.
"Squid's Ink" is about a journalist who goes to a tattoo parlor to interview a famous, local tattoo artist. The interview starts out normal but leads to the journalist remembering one of the darkest nights of her life.
I enjoyed this short story collection a lot. I think it is a strong and intriguing collection. I can't wait to read more from Vivian Kasley.
Thank you, NetGalley, and Brigids Gate Press, LLC, for sending me a copy of this short story collection. It comes out 10/31/2025!🎃
Synopsis: A collection of short stories that instills fear and incites severe discomfort in the ordinary. An exhausted old man, a cheating husband, a cancer diagnosis, a peeping motel desk clerk. These every day stories each have a dark and shocking twist that you’ll just have to experience for yourself.
Review: This was such a fun read, and pretty quick too! Each chapter is its own short story, which really keeps the reader on their toes. I never knew what to expect next! My favorite story within this collection was “Lake Sludge.” I seriously need more on this one! This collection of short stories made me feel so nostalgic as it reminded me of the anthologies I read in my childhood. “All’s Well That Ends Well” is the adult version of your chilling childhood favorites such as “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” and “In a Dark Dark Room.” If those stories traumatized you in childhood, as they did to me (I’m looking at you: “Girl With the Green Ribbon”), and you are yearning for a taste of that adrenaline rush and burst of nostalgia, I think you should give this book a try! You will love this collection if you love:
📼Nostalgia 📚Anthologies ▪️Dark themes
And can we take a moment to appreciate that incredible cover!
Thank you to NetGalley, Brigids Gate Press, LLC, and Vivian Kasley for a ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
Let's just take a good look at this front cover image and tell me that you're not immediately intrigued!?
Ok, if you hate horror, I'll let you off - but for me, this was an instant grab it and read on kind of book!
I absolutely love my horror reads and having been out of the loop for many years while the kids grew up, I'm getting back in that hay ride and racing into as many horror reads as I can fit into my schedule.
What I'm finding, is that I'm absolutely loving books like this which include a range of diverse short stories - easy to pick up and put down as needed and absolutely perfect for fitting in-between other books and devouring over lunchtimes.
I read this book over a few days, taking one or two stories at a time and I loved having that time between to really digest each one.
This collection took lots of normal, everyday situations and events and dragged them screaming into the dark side and I had the best time totally immersing myself in each one.
There was a good range of different styles, some had me on edge throughout and others had that shock factor, but they all were perfectly paced and atmospheric.
This certainly plays on the classic fears and I'm sure that there is something for everyone in this collection.
I just loved them all and couldn't pick a favourite.
My first read by this author but I'll be looking out for more to add to my tbr soon.....
A co-worker recommended this book to me and although horror books are not part of my typical genre, I thought I’d give it a try (why not it is spooky season). For anyone that wants to get into horror books or may be a fanatic, this book is quintessential. The short stories are diverse and as such give feelings of shock, awe, and consternation. The stories are so well written that as the reader will see the words coming to life and a movie begins to play in your head. As I was reading I would torment my wife by telling her the stories. Although, I had to take pity on her though for a few stories because they were the true definition of horror and I didn’t want to give her nightmares. What a book! I hope to see more books from Vivian in the future!
A collection of short horror stories including ghosts, body horror, evil refrigerators, more ghosts and aliens! Such an eclectic mix of stories that give off that 80s horror vibe you’re always chasing.
I love short story collections and I did really enjoy most of these. At times it felt slightly immature in how it was written. Mostly when characters were speaking to each other. Sometimes it felt like the story cut off too fast and left me feeling confused, maybe that was the point? Who knows!
All in all I enjoyed reading this collection of horror stories! Some of my favourites were: Maternal Drive, Christmas Cookies and Squids Ink.
A collection of short stories based on characters from all walks of life, including scarecrows, mermaids, ghosts, werewolves, and even Death himself. These are not your typical modern horror stories full of sex and gore, but much more akin to 80s and 90s old school horror, very Tales from The Crypt-esque. I enjoyed some of these tales more than others, but with 18 different stories, there is definitely something for everyone. My personal favorite has to be Canned Tuna! The only thing that put me off was the repetitive use throughout of 'prolly' instead of 'probably', but that may just be my insatiable need for correct grammar! Overall, an enjoyable nostalgic read for 8Os horror fans.
Wow! What a collection! Not one bad or meh story among them. I liked how they delved into different themes of horror and not just the scares but also trauma. Here's me 3 top ones...
Skin Tags - yes it about actual skin tags but not as we think of them and is a pure gross out but i loved it!
Squids ink - this one is about a tattoo artist who sees who you truly are and turns it into a work of art.
Christmas cookies - a wee boy in an abusive home who will do ANYTHING to be on the nice list!
It was difficult go pick only 3 to summarise as I enjoyed them all.
I absolutely loved this collection of short stories! Each piece drew me in right away and kept me hooked until the very last page. The author does such a wonderful job of creating characters and moments that feel both real and memorable. It’s the kind of book you can pick up for a quick read, yet it leaves a lasting impression. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys well-written, engaging short fiction!
This collection of 20 short horror stories was such a treat. each tale is only around fifteen pages, but manages to keep the tension high from start to finish. The styles vary from body horror to psychological and supernatural, with an old-school vibe that feels like Goosebumps for adults.
What I loved most was how unpredictable the endings were. You think you can guess where the story is heading, but it always turns out differently ; often darker, sometimes surprisingly funny. The writing is sharp and engaging, and the variety makes it a perfect Halloween read.
Some stories resonated with me more than others: Out of Her Gourd, which touches on infertility, struck me personally, while Christmas Cookies, with aliens, a theme I don’t usually enjoy, was a surprising favorite. The touch of humor in some of the stories balanced the horror nicely, making the whole collection even more enjoyable.
A well-crafted, atmospheric, and entertaining anthology. Highly recommended for fans of short, chilling, and twisty horror tales.
Each story was unique and well-written, coalescing into a diverse, enjoyable collection. Kasley has a way of describing people, places, things, emotions that paint a clear picture without being overly descriptive. My personal favorite was Squid’s Ink. Such an interesting concept driving the story forward. Enjoyed them all them all!
I loved this collection of short stories it really reminded me of those old school horror tales and there will be something to suit all horror fans. The cover really drew me in it has such a cult horror feel to it and suits the book so well. A fantastic atmospheric read with a variety of tales with more than just the usual shock reads these had a lot of depth to them, highly recommended

As I always do with books of short stories or poems I will say a bit about them individually and then give an overall rating at the end. These are the stories that are included in order, a short description of what they are about:
Boom Chicka Boom : Content includes violence, imprisonment, threats of torture. Hal Egerton is an elderly man who is fed up of being woken up in the early hours of the morning by two inconsiderate men driving around with their music blaring and throwing rubbish into his garden. Absolutely brilliant, unsuspecting and a lesson to be more considerate and less assuming!! 5/5
Canned Tuna: Content includes kidnapping, emotional abuse/manipulation. Pearl is a mermaid who was enjoying a swim one day when she a man asked for help getting his phone out of the water. Pearl helps him but wishes she hadn't! His name is Grant and as many humans do with something strange or different they decide to use and abuse them for their own wealth. My heart went out for Pearl and this story is very similar to what poor animals go through in this World. Will Pearl escape Grant's clutches? A heart-breaking story of how humans treat other beings but one with a great ending!! 5/5
Dead Deception : Content includes graphic sex, violence. Mirabel hires private detective Dennis to spy on her husband Byron as she is sure he is cheating. Dennis gives her video footage of her husband at a motel but it is not what she is expecting at all. Mirabel is not as innocent as she makes out and as they say karma is a b!tch! A great revenge story! 4/5

However when Death arrives they make a deal that her Dad's cancer will disappear but in return if she ever falls in love she will watch that person suffer and die in return. At the age of 19 she has no plans to fall in love and she is just happy that her Dad gets better. However when she turns 21 she unexpectedly falls in love. This is quite a sad story actually but still a good one! 4/5
Skin Tags: Lorna has been a hairdresser for over 30 years but after being at a new job it has been 2 weeks since she has been allowed to cut hair. She finally has the chance when a man comes in to the salon and she is given him as a client. A mother will do anything for her child and this story goes to show how far! 4/5

She decides to use his old clothes to make a Scarecrow to scare away the animals that are destroying her plants. A perfect ghost story to read on Halloween! 3/5
Roly-Poly: Content includes body dysmorphia, fat-shaming. Margot is fed up of being known as Roly-Poly because she is so big so when her friend Pammy (Cakes) rings her out of the blue offering a miracle diet pill Margot goes to see her. He decides to have a garden sale to get rid of her things. It is going even better than he thought it ever would but things change when the nosy neighbour Miriam barges in and kicks off. He wants to make Christmas Cookies for Santa and after a disaster where his Mum gets so drunk she falls asleep and he burns himself he finally lays them out. I loved this story as my heart broke for poor Gunner with parents like that! 5/5
Lake Sludge: Content includes child death. Robbie and Peyton are out camping when Peyton leads them to Lake Sludge after hearing stories about it. When they get there Peyton decides to go from a swim but Robbie isn't so sure considering how disgusting it is and the stories he has heard. I personally would not have gone in and they will wish they didn't! 3/5
Wild, Wild, West: Dragomir is Russian and Huxley is American. They are fighting over who should leave the space rock on which they are both tasked to get water and materials from. However, they are not the only ones wanting it. They are tasked to a duel and they both think the other has started it. This one is sadly very close to reality when it comes to politics!! 4/5
All's Well That Ends Well: Madge's fridge is playing up by refusing to open and snarling like a dog! It even attacks her with ice! She calls her ex partner Rick to come and have a look, ex after she found pictures of other women on his phone. Overall an absolutely addictive, action and nightmare packed, chilling sinister horror anthology filled with madness that will keep you turning the pages until you've devoured the book in hours!!
All’s Well That Ends Well is everything you could want from a short story collection. Vivian Kasley really covered a lot of territory in this novel making it a well rounded set of stories. From creature features to body horror this set has it all. I feel like the stories were also complete and felt finished. I’m excited to add this this author to my “must read” list
Short stories all with a twist. It would be good to get a story for Halloween. I enjoyed the stories. All were top notch. Thanks to publisher Brigid Gate Press and to NetGalley for the ARC.
I’ve always loved shows such as Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow. You know the ones —30 minutes of campy dark humor, buckets of gore, and plenty of cosmic comeuppance. I was drawn to All’s Well That Ends Well, a new collection by Vivian Kasley, because the cover reminded me of those venerable anthology shows, and I was not disappointed!
I could see many of these tales adapted for those old favorite shows. In fact, in my head I’ve already cast my 50-year girl crush Adrienne Barbeau as the murderous gold digger who gets her otherworldly due in “Dead Deception.”
Other guest appearances include vengeful ghosts, a macho creep scarecrow, bloodthirsty appliances, the obligatory little gray men, Death himself, and skin tags from space so gnarly they almost (but not quite) put me off my feed!
Coming this Halloween from Brigids Gate Press, All’s Well That Ends Well is sure to put a spark in your spooky season!
What a fun book! This will be a perfect read for anyone looking to get spooked during the Halloween season. I’ll never look at skin tags the same way again!
A big thank you to NetGalley, Brigids Gate Press, LLC, and Vivian Kasley for the gifted copy of the book.
Let Vivian Kasley sweep you away to a Creepshow-esque world of werewolf trysts, sludge monsters, and strange alien growths. ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL is at times heartbreaking, often hilarious, and always horrific. A weird and wild good time.
The book did read as 80s horror and it was dark and grungy. Every story was well written and well thought out. I have been reading some anthologies that don’t feel from the heart but all of the stories in this read from the heart.
The one major problem I had was the lack of diversity in the stories and the raging misogyny that was a constant theme in all the stories.
In most of the stories in the book women are called whores and bitches or there is a common theme of cheating and tearing down women. It was really disheartening to read story after story in this book with raging misogyny.
It could be argued that 80s horror wasn’t great in the misogyny department but there is great 80s horror that doesn’t tear down women.
