This is THE most comprehensive book about food bingeing that I have ever encountered. I learned more here than years of eating disorder therapy! There is so much wisdom and understanding and helpful tools to implement and get results. I am so inspired and energized to go to my next level of managing my cravings. I continuously try and then give up with my dependence on food to get me through emotional challenges. I now feel so much more resourced to take this on once and for all! I adore Luis' love and care for his students, clients, audience. He explains in a way that is very accessible and loving. I am so grateful for this book and so ready to really take my food cravings on!
This was a thoughtfully written book about the somatics of food and how our food choices can amp up, depress, or help balance our nervous system. This book is not another dieting prescription of foods to avoid or calories to restrict. Instead, it’s an exploration of why we may reach for a bag of chips or a carton of ice cream, and how our bodies may be trying to regulate our nervous system or protect us from painful emotions.
There is a lot of practical wisdom in each chapter with somatic exercises integrated throughout. It’s so easy to be disconnected from our bodily experience and to undervalue food’s impact on how we are feeling. One of my favorite passages was around capacity and its constantly changing nature. When we nourish ourselves with foods like beans, greens, and nuts, we are choosing options that bind stress hormones and help us literally metabolize stress and increase our capacity. Wow!
I had to stop several times throughout the book to reflect on its words. Our bodies do so much for us, and sometimes we approach food through an all-or-nothing mindset, with deprivation or pleasure being the only two options. But it’s so much more than that. Even balancing foods can be enjoyable to eat. And to think that the foods we are eating build our cells, tissues, and organs. It really reframes a lot of things.
Food Therapy is more than just a nutrition book. It’s relational - in the way that we connect with ourselves, the plants and animals we eat, and the larger ecosystem / ancestral linage from which we live and are born.
I purchased this book at my local independent bookstore called Mosaic Books in BC. I've been studying with Luis for two years through Holistic Life Navigation, and this book is like having him in my pocket to remind me of his teachings whenever I need them. What I love most is that this book distills his wisdom into easily understood practical chunks - which is so important to me for how I learn and take in information. Luis's insight into the biochemistry of food and how it affects my body has been enlightening and has explained so much of my experiences with food over the years. The quiet diet is simple to implement, even if it's not always easy to stick to, but it's so forgiving and gives me a place to return to over and over. I know how to relate to food in a different way now and that's allowed me to be kinder with myself in how I eat. I've been able to slowly, over time, release a lot of guilt and shame around food and eating. The somatic practices I've learned from Luis have been life changing, too. I'm so grateful that you wrote this book, Luis! Everyone should read it!
So far I am LOVING this book! I find myself nodding in agreement with the things that Luis has written! I super appreciate how there is so much emphasis on normalizing and bringing into the light that comfort eating is something that many of us do, and we don't need to shame ourselves or others for doing that. When we can be present and notice the connection between our current emotional state and feeling drawn to eating a specific food to feel better this is valuable information. Luis' personal story is so honest, open, and brave. I am excited to continue reading and learning about food and healing!
A complete connection between stress/trauma and food. The author speaks straight to your body's needs, and teaches that food can be used as a tool that you can use to tend to yourself. I'm so grateful to have found Luis' work. Truly life changing. You'll find yourself knowing why you want to binge on bagels at 10pm...and you'll find yourself realizing your body will love that can of beans for breakfast.
Luis writes about how food affects your entire being. This is a gentle, compassionate guide to the exploration of food and mood, from healing trauma to the balanced experience of calm and peace. Based on his own experiences, Luis promotes a healthy lifestyle with sound nutritional practices.
