I’ll never see sidewalks the same after binge-reading the insightful, hopeful, and witty Sidewalk Nation. Professor Pollack opened my eyes to the varied conflicts and constraints facing sidewalks, people that use them, and the local government officials who are (spoiler alert: or aren’t?) responsible for maintaining their quality and optimizing their design and use for the common good.
This book was also a refreshing reminder that everyday Americans face many of the same thorny tradeoffs when it comes to their sidewalks; sometimes we’re not as divided by geography and politics as it seems.
If you want to understand why the colors in a Matisse painting make you feel more alive, you read a book on art. If you’re trying to grasp why the towers flanking Central Park West evoke such beauty and awe, you read a book on architecture. But if you want to know why your walk to work or transit or school is so relaxing (or so stressful), and what your sidewalks say about how your neighbors and elected officials feel about common spaces, community, commerce, resources, and tradeoffs, you should read Sidewalk Nation.
The prose is clean, the tone is balanced, and the voice is passionate and playful. Sidewalks are a precious resource, and it takes motivation, money, and guts to do them right.

POLICY WONKS, LET'S GOOOOOOOO! My god, after reading this, I can't stop talking to everyone I encounter about sidewalks. Michael Pollack argues that sidewalks are a place where tons of public policy issues collide: city planning, transportation, policing, free speech, art, commerce, taxes, public health, disability rights, homelessness, climate change, and more. If you're an infrastructure nerd, you're going to be obsessed with this book.
