You see a title like this, and a blurb like that, and it's easy to jump to conclusions about how this story is going to play out. The wonderful thing about Jim's writing is that he takes all your expectations and completely subverts them, creating an unputdownable story. He gives you subtle hints throughout the book, so that when the penny drops and everything comes together, it's a delicious culmination of things you both suspect and also things you never see coming. Also, there are diverse characters that are complex and interesting, with strong development that you just can't help liking- even when you feel like you shouldn't! Another excellent novel from Jim!

Luke is not like other men.
Luke is always watching. And he will stop at nothing to get what he wants…no matter the consequences.
But what happens when the tables are turned?
What happens when someone watches the voyeur?
The Voyeur is part thriller, part erotica, all with an undertone of Jim Ody’s trademark humour and urban tone. It is gritty, graphic, and complicated. Luke as a main character is incredibly unlikeable, yet as a reader you can’t pull away, and want him to succeed. He works his way into your mind and settles there. It is an incredible testament to the skill of the writer that Luke works as a main character. He is unreliable as a narrator, but you hang on his every thought and word. The characters are complicated throughout, and you find yourself questioning everything you think you know.
Jim Ody continues to branch out in his style and here he once again proves that he is an accomplished multi-genre author, which is a rare skill to have. His writing never fails to make me laugh, make me think, and consistently throws in twists that I never see coming. The Voyeur is no exception to this: a wonderfully curated journey through the seedy eyes of the voyeur.

Whilst attending the Indie Horror Chapter event Chapter 3: Weston Horror Book Con last year, I found myself compelled to grab The Voyeur by Jim Ody. I mean, just look at that cover - of course I had to pick this up. I went in expecting this to be a 90s erotic thriller throwback with a dash of horror, and I will say upfront that Ody delivers.
The principal character followed here is Luke, who over time has developed voyeuristic tendencies. But nothing is quite as it appears. I'm being very deliberately vague here because Ody takes us on a twisty journey and I don't want to inadvertently give anything away. For the most part it's quite fun bearing witness to the events that play out, with Ody quite masterfully and deliberately ensuring that you never quite feel certain you know what direction the plot is heading in. Just when you might think you have some idea where everything is going, Ody pulls the rug from beneath you, and once you think you might have it all figured out, Ody unveils another reveal that surfaces more questions, cementing the 90s erotic thriller influence can definitely be felt.
However, as fun and engaging as the majority of The Voyeur is, I must confess the final act didn't quite work for me. There's a reveal that feels a little rushed and, although audacious, the ending left me underwhelmed, which is a shame because I had such a fun ride getting there. I also found the structure of the book a little odd. Quite early on (Chapter 5) there's a perspective shift that doesn't really pay off until much later in the book, and it just left me a little puzzled as to the placing of it within the narrative. Might be a me issue, but it did strike me as strange. There are also a few minor instances where a little bit of polish in the design of the book itself would've helped - for example, some inconsistencies with the layouts of the Chapter pages (some include an image of an eye peeping, some don't, with no real rhyme or reason as to why), and at one point in the book I turned the page to be greeted with an entirely blank page except for the words 'Part Two' ... which would be fine, but there was no Part One, or, for that matter, a Part Three - an oversight from a previous draft perhaps? When it comes to indie published books I do try to overlook these minor errors, I just found that with The Voyeur they became hard to ignore.
Still, criticisms aside, this is an entertaining book. Luke is a surprisingly compelling character, which is testament to Ody's writing, and for 332 pages I was kept gripped which is no small feat. The Voyeur has certainly piqued my curiosity to check out more of Ody's work, so it's a good job I picked up an additional three books from him at the event.

Luke is a troubled young man. From as far back as he can remember, he has just been and felt different. Growing up unwanted, unseen and unloved has really become a part of his jaded, and angry world views when it comes to socializing, being "normal", and not performing in deviant activities. Luke harbors some very unconventional ideas about sex, and dark desires. Certain things he likes to do for the sexual arousal, and excitement of it all. But, what if he really has no control over those thoughts, and urges? The control he does have over himself allows him the strength to navigate through life, and realize that what he desires, above all things, is to be accepted, wanted, and loved. Is this part of his psyche the only thing that is keeping him from completely falling over the edge? Will he ever be loved? Or, is he stuck on the outside, looking in? This was my first read from Jim, and I absolutely loved it! He is a very descriptive writer, and his style is top notch! This was a nasty, naughty bit of work to read, that's for sure! You are taken on a sex filled ride into a hedonistic realm where every kink is considered normal. Though at the beginning, Luke is very narcissistic, rather full of himself, and devoid of real emotions, you grow to care about, and feel for his character. There are a couple of twists, and turns that caught me off guard, and really enhanced the story. Also, I loved the ending, though it lacked any sign of a silver lining, it was beautifully written. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves books with some violence, a whole lot of eroticism, and, in Jim's own words, "people who are close with their aunties"! 😂

I don't think that there is any doubt that Jim Ody is a truly gifted writer, able to write over multiple genres; his writing is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining, and The Voyeur is no exception.
Luke is no ordinary man, having been in therapy for as long as he can remember, unwanted by his mother, and with a less-than-typical relationship with his aunt. But perhaps Luke's biggest quirk is his voyeurism, his obsession with watching, which he indulges in the seediest of motels.
The Voyeur explores Luke's descent into complete hedonistic pleasure, being drawn into a world that pushes even his boundaries. But Luke is left questioning what it is he truly wants, and everything he thought he knew about himself and his proclivities.
To say I was mind-blown after finishing this book was an understatement. I think I'm still trying to process what I read. Jim's writing will truly mess with your mind. The finale was the ultimate WTAF moment, throwing me a curveball beyond anything I was imagining.

Oh this WAS weird but in a good way, I promise.
So what happens when the watcher is well watched??
This is one of those weird twists that I hadn’t really thought about, but the tension was crazy in this.
It’s one thing to roll out a story where we see everything from the creepy guys POV, been there read that, but his is more, its of our watcher being watched and for some reason that cranks the tension up for 40000 for me.
How much more crazy do you have to be to be a voyeur of other voyeurs??
Well looks like Luke is going to find out real quick, he likes to watch, all the rejection in his life has seemed to lead up to this point and I say seems because lets face it Luke is not so reliable.
I am trying so so so hard not to spoil this because its such a twisty story, I loved where it went and somehow I kept finding myself like, I dont want to say liking Luke but I was kind of rooting for him in a weird way.
That ending though, my head is still in a spin, I loved this and will be checking out more from Jim very very soon.

So, I’m a man of a certain age living in the UK with no VPN. It’s time to go old school for my erotic thrills. The brilliant cover, all soft purples and a glinting knife covering a young lady’s buttocks. I was lured in. Pairing music with books has become a thing and I queued up Perturbator’s Lustful sacraments.
And then the prologue completely rugs me! It’s brilliant, top tier. Grabbed me right from the off and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to find out what was happening.
It’s a weird, twisty tale and you’re never too sure who’s watching who. Seemingly random acts of violence mix with the spicier aspects of the book.
If like me, you were after erotica it’s here, especially in the club scenes. However, it’s all necessary and makes perfect sense as the story unfolds.
The ending rugged me again! I was not expecting that!
I’m hoping for a prequel or sequel concerning a character at the end. I’d love to read more about their ‘job’.

The Voyeur is a dark psychological story about Luke, a deeply isolated man whose life is defined by rejection, obsession, and the need to watch others from a distance. What begins as secret indulgence in observation slowly twists into a tense game of control when the watcher becomes the watched.
The book leans heavily into erotic psychological thriller territory, blending discomfort with curiosity in a way that recalls You and Eyes Wide Shut. Its strength lies in atmosphere and tension rather than character warmth or moral comfort, making it more unsettling than traditionally entertaining.
It’s a story built to disturb, provoke, and linger, especially around the question of how far obsession can go before it collapses back onto the observer.

The Voyeur is a dark psychological thriller that explores obsession, control, and voyeuristic compulsion through the character of Luke, a deeply disturbed man driven by rejection and compulsive watching. The story builds tension around shifting power dynamics, particularly the unsettling reversal of the observer becoming the observed. Blending erotic undertones with psychological suspense, it positions itself in the space between intimate psychological breakdown and dark, mind-game thriller storytelling.

An interesting riveting tale of the watcher being the one watched. Jim introduces us to Luke, a voyeur. He is a very unreliable narrator, just as we would expect him to be. And he lives the life that would be expected. But in this dark thriller with the right amount of erotica, Luke bargains for more than he can pay for and the surprise at the end makes the journey all the better.

A tale of a voyeur being watched himself.
The book had potential.
There was an underlying storyline going on in the book . The reveal was problematic. It was rushed and there was a new character that stuck out like a sore thumb. The reveal being tied the end of the book is what caused it to flop. Did I mention how much I hated the ending. It should be mention multiple times.

Jim Ody has taken us to another dark side with this book.
The watcher/voyeur is taken on his own ride too.
Dark, gritty & gripping.
An excellent story that will make you cringe and want to read more at the same time

Not what I expected. Which is great when you read as many books as me. Excellent book. Weird to feel a little sorry for the creep?

This book was a wild and crazy ride!! Did I see the twists coming absolutely not! And it’s left on a cliffhanger sort of leaving you guessing where the author will take this story next.

I received The Voyeur by Jim Ody from the author as an ARC.
I've read alot of the author's previous books and loved them all. This book is definately one I would recommend.
A totally different direction in style for the author with the dark erotica side which worked very well with The Voyeur. Loved the main character, Luke and an ending I never saw coming. Brilliant!
Thanks for another excellent book Jim. Easy 5 star from me. Loved it!

I really struggled to get into this book as it felt like it took a while to get going. I also felt a bit confused until I got closer to the end when things started to come together and make sense. For me, I would have liked the story to come together much sooner as I didn't feel fully engaged as I was as confused as the main character appeared to be. A great concept but too much build up meant the pay off felt rushed. Last part of the book is 4* but the majority of it sits at a 3 unfortunately.
