I am not sure what I had expected to get from this book, but I’m certain that my expectations were exceeded. I picked it up on a whim, as I often do, and was not prepared for just how intriguing it would be. The introduction alone was beefy and went in so many directions, all fascinating. The actual chronicle by the 12th century monk was great, it’s got all makings of a dramatic YA novel, plus the political tensions of feudal France. The footnotes were often as interesting as the text itself, with full scale discussions of the original Latin and where translators differed. The appendices were excellent too, with original letters from popes and kings, as well as academic discussions of the communes and the cult of Mary Magdalene. Just a really fascinating, densely packed book of awesomeness
