Sea of Souls Saga #3

Tides of Torment

Rate this book
You told me you would haunt me, caraid. You were right.

The capital has fallen. Ghostly wraiths and bloodthirsty selkies roam the coast as the haar spreads its sickness across Silveckan. Every day, another port is consumed by the mist, and without her pelt, Isla Blackwood can do nothing to stop it.

Her only hope is to track down Eimhir, but her old friend has her own demons to battle, and she’s made it clear she doesn’t want to be found.

Instead, Isla must turn to the Sea Kith for an alliance. Their common enemy, the Grand Admiral, draws ever closer, and he won’t rest until the sea and everything in it is in his grasp once more.

Reunited with Darce and the soul bond they share, Isla prepares to sail into one last storm. If she survives it, she might be able to end decades of bloodshed between human and selkie. But if she fails, Silveckan will be lost to the mists forever…

Tides of Torment is the bone-chilling finale of the Sea of Souls Saga, a dark fantasy steeped in Scottish folklore, ancient magic, and monsters that feel all too familiar. Perfect for fans of Rachel Gillig and Ava Reid.

This review was originally published on Grimdark Magazine

Well, I never expected any dark seafaring fantasy tale to ever reach the same heights of Robin Hobb’s Liveship Traders and R.J. Barker’s Tide Child for me, but I think N.C. Scrimgeour just did so with Tides of Torment. This epic conclusion to the Scottish folklore-inspired Sea of Souls Saga truly blew all my expectations out of the water, and I honestly think it’s a more perfect and satisfying finale than you could possibly ever dream of.

“Some wounds ran too deep to be satisfied with blood. Yet we spill it anyway, a voice in his head reminded him. Over and over again, until we forget where the first cut came from.”

Similarly to Mists of Memory, we start Tides of Torment off with one of the most unique ‘the story so far’ sequences I have ever come across, this time in the form of a message in a bottle from a character whose arc absolutely wrecked me in the previous book. Not only did this little recap smoothly reimmerse me in this brutally bleak yet wonderfully mystical fantasy world, but it also made me cry before the real book had even started, so I love that for me.

Now, I am going to be really honest (and maybe a bit unprofessional) here, but I honestly don’t know how to write a coherent review for this book. I am just sitting here staring at my screen, feeling all the feels and at a complete loss as to how I can ever translate all these emotions into words, especially without spoiling anything. I mean, Tides of Torment more than lives up to its darkly ominous title, and I feel like the events in this book will torment and haunt me for years to come, but that is exactly why I love it so much.

The core conflict between the humans and the selkies really comes to its crescendo in Tides of Torment as Isla sets out on her quest to reclaim her stolen pelt and restore the powers she needs to finally take down the Grand Admiral, who more than ever before proves himself to be a deliciously despicable villain who I loved to hate with every fibre of my being. It absolutely broke my heart to feel the weight of the losses, sacrifices, regrets, and (generational) trauma as these scarred yet unbreakable characters fight tooth and nail to break the vicious cycle of endless bloodshed they’ve been trapped in, and I really appreciated how Scrimgeour didn’t shy away from showcasing the full extent of the irreversible damage that this war has caused on both sides of the conflict. But then, I also can’t deny that I was truly living for all the emotional gut punches that just hurt oh so good, so there’s that.

“There’s not a soul on this ship who hasn’t lost part of themselves,” she said. “It’s not possible to walk away from such things unchanged, unmarked. We all have scars, and many of them. But they are a sign that we survived. I wager that’s something these bones understand.”

In a way, Tides of Torment almost feels like one big climax sequence of life-or-death situations while these characters are either on the hunt or on the run, yet I loved how Scrimgeour never loses sight of the characters’ inner journeys and does everyone’s individual arc so much justice. Isla and Darce continue to shine as the two main characters of this series, and while their romance is absolutely not the main focus of this story, I also have to admit that their soul bond is probably my favourite aspect of this series.

I mean, how do you expect me not to swoon when he thinks/says lines like this: “To love Isla was to love the tides, the way they returned to shore only to retreat again. She was a current he’d follow, a wake he’d never leave. But he couldn’t contain her, not any more than he could contain the sea itself. All he could do was carry her where she needed to go.” Or like this: “Her taste was softness and salt, a warmth that left him hungry for more. He’d drown in her, no matter what it cost him.” MY HEART, I CAN’T!!!

But then again, the romance is really only one example (and not even the most important one) of all the incredibly complex and powerful relationships that lie at the heart of this story, and I would argue that the Sea of Souls Saga easily rivals Fonda Lee’s Greenbone Saga in its exploration of family, loyalty, and the cost of war and vengeance. Both old and new bonds are tested beyond belief in Tides of Torment, and I particularly enjoyed how this instalment focused more on the Sea Kith’s role in this conflict as Isla strikes a tentative alliance with them (because hello more pirate vibes). The character development (or should I say character corruption, in some cases?) over the course of this series is truly off the charts, and especially the journeys of Muir, Lachlan & Blair, Nishi, and Eimhir had me going through it real hard as we see them constantly toeing the line between fighting for well-deserved justice and turning into the monsters that they are trying to defeat under the guise of revenge.

“If you think I’m claiming some moral superiority here, you’ve misunderstood. My hands are as bloody as everyone else’s, and they’ll be bloodier still by the end of this. But there can be an end to this. If we stop chasing vengeance. If we break the cycle.”

Needless to say, Tides of Torment shines in its intimately vulnerable and brutally human storytelling, but that is absolutely not all that it has to offer. Scrimgeour’s rich imagination just drips off every page, and I loved how all the epic sea battles, monstrous sea serpents, fierce (lady) pirates, (semi-sentient?) soulships, telepathic bird companions, bloodthirsty selkies and fearsome kelpies, deadly wraith mists, and mystical dream and blood magic filled me with equal parts awe and terror. Like, I am a sucker for some dark atmosphere and folkloric horror vibes in my fantasy, and this series delivers that in spades.

The Sea of Souls Saga was just smooth sailing the entire way through (for me, not for the characters, I am afraid), and Tides of Torment easily solidified it as one of my new favourite series that I will be incessantly shoving in everyone’s faces until it gets the full recognition it so deserves. This is one of those beautifully bittersweet yet utterly satisfying finales that showcases that life and love are so worth fighting for even if things aren’t always fair or work out in the way you were hoping it would, and I love it all the more for that.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Tides of Torment is scheduled for release on 12 November 2025.

This series is one of the most readable and binge-worthy. I flew through each book in two sittings.

For those unaware, it is about family and bonds, about selkies and those who poach them, about the cycle of violence that cuts everyone deeply.

…there was a comfort in the churning of the waves, the spray misting over the prow. The crisp bite of sea air burned the back of her throat, and she swallowed it hungrily as she set her eyes on the horizon.

Every character is looking for a place to belong which is what touched me. In real life, everyone wonders whether we deserve what we’ve got, who do we call home, friend, other.

This series shows that even though you might be doing right by your heart, it might clash with others. This needs to be reconciled with words rather than blood.

I wish this leaned more into the fantasy and horror elements, but then again, the ease of the world-building is what makes this so easy to breeze through.

Whilst there are sea creatures and oaths and a deathly mist, the story never dived ;) deeper into the more fantastical elements and relied a lot on naval battle.
For most readers, the tense action will keep you gripped.

It was a bittersweet ending that wrapped this trilogy up nicely.

Physical arc gifted by the author.

I’ll start by saying this is hands down the best new series I’ve read for a good number of years. I love all three books, and I think they are even better when taken as a completed trilogy. The story, the characters, the world – everything is written to a really high standard, and even if there are a couple of aspects that I don’t usually go for, everything just worked really well for me here.

I love that there’s a proper ending to the story so we can get closure once all is said and done, and I love how there are a few bittersweet moments on the way, showing us that not everything will always work out, or work out in the way we want or expect it to. It really feels like the stakes are high and the intensity levels match, but the pacing is really good so you’re not just swept away in a never-ending tide of emotion (or torment).

I always find it difficult to review a book that’s not the first in the series because it’s all been said before, but I will say that if you enjoyed the first book, there’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy the second and third. They build on each other and complement each other really well, and it’s a series that I highly recommend to anyone who likes fantasy that has elements of darkness, romance, folklore, family and found family, pirates, and I could go on and on… I think the way the Sea of Souls Saga pulls all of it together is really masterful, and I also think it’s something just a little bit different that should definitely be experienced by as many people as possible.

**I was provided an E-ARC copy of this book, from the author, in exchange for an honest read and review.**

“Tides of Torment” book 3 and final entry in the “Sea of Souls” Saga by N.C. Scrimgeour has finally (and bittersweetly?) found us…and brought every bit of the violence, trauma, grief, rage and yes, torment, that has been building in this stormy sea saga that Scrimgeour has penned over the past few years. This dark tale of loss, betrayal, vengeance and pain, steeped in Scottish Lore, reaches its bloody climax and threatens to drag our souls to the fathoms…with the promise of more pain, more violence and more vengeance! These dark waters churn with a magic and darkness that demands unity and trust, to overcome the approaching haar and terror. Our brilliant author manages to chase us from chapter to chapter with this mounting dread, in the most brutally raw, while strikingly elegant, storytelling I've experienced to date! 👏

Scrimgeour starts us on this final journey, by bringing us back, full circle, to the very start of our tale…back at the Blackwood Estate. The ruins of the Estate that remain, from the brutal attack that kicked off this Saga in book 1, are brought to life, in exquisite detail, with the outstanding level of scene description and world building that we are blessed with throughout this book. Scottish lore and vivid torment aren't the only things Scrimgeour is great at writing. The beauty found in the darkness this tale tells is ever present and layered into the struggles and sacrifice, with a perfect balance of love and hope. Creativity and vision are displayed at the highest level seen in this series! 🔥

All our mains are back in this mainly dual POV, with a mix of interludes that give us a slightly different view of the same storm. This is another brilliant approach from our author that adds to the beautiful pace of this final jump into the waves. Dark and selfish motives, coupled with determination and love, rage in the tempest, that spins us through to the epic finish that can't be avoided. Can Isla do what needs to be done…will Darce and the rest of her help, see her through to the bloody end? It's about knowing when to let go…knowing how to let go. Sentinel's, Selkie's, Men and creatures from the deep, all meet in the center of a storm that spans from shore to shore…and even finds waters hidden to most. To quote our author…

“Dark be the water, and darker still the creatures that lurk within.”

This was the best book of the Saga, out matching the first two amazing entries is no small task…but Scrimgeour navigated us through this stormy ride with all the grace and bravado of a seasoned captain of the seas! Like the breaking of the storm, we have looked ancient creatures, and darkness in the eye…can we persevere to the bittersweet calm skies, and find that beautifully serene ending?, or will the icy mist drag us to the crushing dark deep!…I'm so glad this wee adventure found its way to the shores of my forever library! 📚

5⭐ go to this wet, wild, and epic finish, to what I consider, Scrimgeour’s best work yet! The time, dedication, love and soul she puts into this, is felt in each line written. That's all we can ask of our authors and their vision…I can only hope my review amounts to a dram of the recognition this deserves! I'll end this with one more quote from…and to the author…

“I'm glad the tides brought us together, Captain. These waters wouldn't be the same without you.” 🥃

A masterpiece of a finale. This third and last novel in the Sea of Souls Saga didn't at all disappoint.
The emotions are deeper, the tension is higher and the losses are more profound. The magic is more amazing and of course, the monsters are bigger!
This story hurtles to the end at a breakneck speed, never slowing down. But....never losing sight of the character development and feelings experienced by all the players. Some of my favourites are Nisha, Muir, Darce and Blair. All brought something so special to their supporting roles. Isla and Eimhir, as our FMC's are locked in a deadly battle for the soul of the Selkies. The villain, the Grand Admiral, is truly written so well. His absolute iron will to bring about the death and destruction of everything around him, speaks to the rapid blackening of his soul...and all because of events experienced years ago.
I found the story comes to a deeply satisfying conclusion, albeit with losses on every side of the equation, and leaves us with hope....and love.

Atmospheric setting paired with nail biting action. I loved every page of this trilogy! Every chapter is packed with all flavors of new magic and lore that build on the previous two books. Towering sea serpents, telepathic guidebirds, colossal storms, selkies and kelpies, magical mists, dreamwalking and so much more! The complex relationships hit their breaking points as everyone must choose a side. In heartbreaking fashion, Tides of Torment tackles questions about morality, warfare, and generational conflict where violence will always be met with more violence until someone ends the cycle.

Scrimgeour has penned a stunning finale to this Scottish mythology story about magic, love, and bonds deeper than the sea itself.

Finally! The conclusion of one of the most well executed stories I've read in a while.

Tides of Torment, the third installment in the Sea of Souls series, by N. C. Scrimgeour is a brilliant, thrilling end to a story about love, pain and the ends one person can go for them.

The main theme of this entry is above everything else, the pain and hurt the endless cycle violence causes. And how much of an effort, from every involved party it requires to gain a respite from said cycle.

Scrimgeour's skill with the pace and the flow of the story remain unmatched, since book one she handles them with mastery, like a Sentinel controlling the tides and the swells.

And her prose, just like in the previous entries is a thing of beauty. Evocative, heartfelt, gorgeous in its descriptions of things, and even more beautiful when describing the inner worlds of our protagonists.

Nothing feels gifted in the story, nothing feels it was just given to the characters. Everything is earned, ofttimes in blood, tears and pain.

Isla and Darce remain our main characters, as they've been throughout the series, and with each passing chapter we dive deeper into their beings and discover more of what makes them who they are and what are their paths.

And while these two are the main actors in this drama, they can only shine because the supporting cast is equally up to par. Lachlan's development and growth are superbly worked throughout, and Muir, as the final part of this family remains a flawed, broken man, find redemption through his own force of will, one of my favorite arcs in this series.

Make no mistakes, this is the perfect cap to this gorgeous, evocative, magical series brought to us by N. C. Scrimgeour.

4.7⭐️

The final book in the Sea of Souls trilogy is very satisfying. Isla, who must confront Eimhir to get her pelt back and Cunningham, to stop his destruction, has been strengthened by her bond to Darce. Her allies and her resolve make for an intriguing end to the battle between humans and sea folk.
Isla, with Darce, her brother Lachlan, her uncle Muir, and the ship captain Nishi work together to stop the violence Cunningham is wrecking everywhere. A nice touch is that for a good part of the novel, Darce and Isla are apart, giving us two narratives to follow. Isla must find Eimhir, which is a difficult search, and get her stolen pelt back. Eimhir has become cold and hardened, making it so Isla must force herself upon her former friend. Isla decides she does not want to spill more blood but Eimhir will not give in. This twist was intriguing.
Darce, with a small group, discover a grim prison where Cunningham has tortured and damaged a group of people. Sadly, they are unable to free them all. Then Darce and crew go to face Cunningham, who only wants death and vengeance on those around him. A dramatic battle ensues, including an ancient sea serpent. Muir decides to fight to the death, willing to sacrifice to stop the violence. And Isla must summon all her strength.
In the end, Isla sees the beauty and rebirth in the landscape around her. She and her allies efforts did not solve all the problems, but there is hope. And her brother, who fought against her, has joined her.
I really enjoyed the battle against evil by characters who really wanted peace. It seemed to me the prose was even better, with some really nicely written passages. The pacing is great and the ending nicely crafted.

I still fondly remember the time, a mere two years ago—but in the relentless gallows humour churn of the 2020s it may as well have been two decades ago—when I picked up a new dark fantasy trilogy opener, Sea of Souls. I was entranced by its salt-spray confection of monsters from Scottish folklore, real-world themes of endless cycles of violence (selkies and humans replacing the many real-world conflicts this saga is reminiscent of), atmospheric prose, and character conflicts etched out in quiet, heartbreaking moments. It was my favourite book of that year, and it felt a little emotional to read the concluder in the trilogy, Tides of Torment. It also felt a little emotional for the more straightforward reason that this is a very emotional book, full of dramatic conclusions to arcs with characters whose torments we have ridden with on the high seas for three books. It’s also a ridiculously thrilling tale, which barely stops for breath even as it’s sapping your heart muscles. It is, in short, a trilogy closer that gives us everything we could have wanted from a fantasy series that has given us so much.

The plot is simple, at least at first; we are in the home stretch now, and Isla Blackwood, eternally torn between the selkies and humans, must finally face down both her selkie found family and their tortured, violent selkie ghosts before they lay waste to her human homeland, while also finally defeating the selkie-butchering Admiralty under the command of her chilling father, who just won’t die in the very literal sense. The team around her includes her brother Lachlan, closer than ever to her but still smarting from old grievances; Darce, her soul-bonded beau; and her Uncle Muir, who has his own scores to settle with the villainous Admiral. But somewhere out there is her selkie sister Eimhir, and destiny awaits.

This is a trilogy closer framed around the classic saga-closing structure: the desperate race against overwhelming odds, trying to secure new allies for the final battle ahead. And one very impressive thing about this book is that how, while Scrimgeour introduces a whole host of new allies—from new magic-welding sentinels with bones to pick against the big bad admiral to roguish pirates—they are each given a proper fleshed out character arc and serve to expand this world much further than even the previous book, all in the service of showing just how much pain this endless cycle of violence between selkies and humans has caused. But this new cast is never to the detriment of our core quartet of Isla, Lachlan, Darce, and Eimhir, whose loyalties and capacity for heartbreak are constantly tested in ways that will render your blood pressure as shaky as the ocean waves. And then there’s the action set pieces: non stop, from serpent attacks to pirate battles to frantic sea battles against daunting man o’ wars to daring prison rescues. Somehow this book is a constant flow of character moments among an endless tide of action set pieces, and the way Scrimgeour has balanced this is genuinely impressive.

Thematically, too, the true depth of this series is revealed in this book. The use of the concept of selkie pelts, and the souls they contain, is such a brilliant metaphor. From the strange misty dimension of the haar that is created from soulless selkies to Isla’s attempts to heal the ancestral pain of her species through the shared experience of their very souls through to the special soul bond that even non-selkies like her beloved Darce can exhibit, this is a book committed to examining the question of how endless cycles of violence can be healed, and if so by what means. The themes of sharing pain to heal pain rings true throughout and it’s through subtle ways like this that the fantasy genre shows its power to shine a light on real-world historic trauma.

But the real gem of this series for me has always been in those quiet character moments where characters are torn between impossible choices, struggling to keep their bonds between them even as these choices tear them apart. Scrimgeour has this perfect blend of operatic emotion with quiet, haunting subtlety that makes these moments feel biting real; and one particular climatic encounter here we’ve been waiting for doesn’t disappoint in that regard. And the ending—the ending, inevitably, left me crying. Whether through sadness or joy that’s for you to discover, but it is, as I always knew it would be, perfect.

Overall, Tides of Torment is a desperate race against time to end a cycle of violence full of impossible choices and pulse-pounding high seas action that pauses for breath only to rip apart your heart. It’s a showstopping lesson in how to conclude a trilogy and we can now say what has been clear for a while; this is one of the unmissable fantasy series of the decade.

RELEASE DAY! 🥳🌊✨ And just like that, another trilogy is complete...

Not sure where to begin, really. This journey started nine years ago when I wrote my first full-length novel, a Scottish-inspired story about selkie raiders. That was a very different book, with a different title (Rising Tides) and different characters - no Isla, no Eimhir or Lachlan or Darce. (Muir made it, though!) It was a book that got me an agent and set me on the road to being an author, just not in the way I first imagined.

Since making the switch to self-publishing, I've grown so much as an author, and going back to rewrite that original book into what is now the Sea of Souls Saga is the best thing I could have done. I don't think I could have done this story justice back then, but it's become something I'm incredibly proud of.

Tides of Torment is my favourite thing I've ever written. I always believe it's the characters who are the heart of the story, and in this book, we see the end of all the journeys they've been on ever since the opening pages of Sea of Souls. It's never easy to say goodbye, but I hope it the voyage has been worth it!

If you've never read the Sea of Souls Saga, allow me to introduce you to a dark folklore fantasy steeped in Scottish mythology with stormy seas, tidal magic and the all important question - who are the real monsters?

In these books, you'll find selkies and kelpies, pirates and sea serpents, naval battles and soul magic. But you'll also find grief and loss, memory and generational trauma, fractured families and learning where you truly belong.

If you've made it this far, thank you for all your support. If you've picked up one of these books, or intend to, or have reviewed or rated or recommended them, thank you again. This trilogy has had so much love over the past couple of years, and I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.

Now, who's ready to sail into the storm with me one last time? ✨🌊

A massive thank you goes to N. C. Scrimgeour for letting me read an e-ARC of Tides of Torment, the finale to the Sea of Souls Saga! This dark fantasy had me on the edge of my seat the entire way through, & I couldn’t be more delighted...

Isla Blackwood has faced the greatest depths of the sea, & barely survived the ultimate betrayal of a loved one. As wraiths & selkies devastate towns all along the coast of Silveckan, Isla must now turn to the Sea Kith for aid. Because if she can’t gain an alliance? The Grand Admiral hunting her will be the least of her worries—for the mists are all-consuming. And if she doesn’t weather the maelstrom in front of her? No one will survive, on land or at sea…

Within Tides of Torment, Scrimgeour weaves a deadly enchantment over our hearts. She tells us to take one last deep breath, before we dive beneath the waves. And when we do? This finale, glitterbugs. Holy guacamole, this finale. If you want high stakes, devastating confessions, & heart-breaking sacrifices? You’ll be glued to these pages! This dark fantasy is a masterpiece in portraying how memories hold power, & how they can twist into being someone's salvation or ruin.

To read Isla’s story is to fall in love with the mythology of the sea. And with every twist & turn, every new beastie revealed from underneath the waves? I can promise you one thing: you won’t ever look at the sea the same way again. There’s magic there, & Scrimgeour has given us the spyglass with which to view it.

Tides of Torment brings N.C. Scrimgeour's Sea of Souls saga to a conclusion and what an epic and exciting end to the trilogy it is. While reading I was in a constant state of tension between desperately wanting to know what happened next and at the same time not wanting to say goodbye to these wonderful characters. Isla has been a firm favourite of mine since the first book in the series, Sea of Souls, and in this book the tensions in her relationships with both the human and selkie sides of her family rise to a point where the consequences will be devastating no matter what choice she makes, lets just say the torment in the title is there for a reason. For me the characters have always been the heart of this series, and once again the author has outdone herself in allowing each of the characters time to grow and giving the relationships between them a chance to develop in a way that feels believable even if some of the choices made did absolutely break my heart. That being said the pacing in the plot feels almost relentless, with everything from naval battles to encounters with sea serpents keeping me on edge the whole time I was reading, so much so that I could barely put the book down. My heart was broken and healed as the story unfolded and while I am sorry to see the series end , I could not have asked for a better ending.

I received an eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. It has not affected my opinions.

TIDES OF TORMENT finishes off this seaborne trilogy with action and plenty of tough decisions.

In keeping with this being a dark fantasy series that is much more than just "the dark aesthetic", there are plenty of morally tough decisions for Isla to face this instalment. She doesn't always make the right choices and does end up hurting a fair few people, and I liked that she was far from perfect. For a start, that's being human, and for a second, it's a lot more interesting plot wise!

The thematic focus of this book - the series, really - has been the decision between vengeance and not. Sometimes the characters choose vengeance and sometimes they walk away, and it's a very hard choice each time with consequences. Not all the characters heal and not all of them get what they want or need.

The magic of the sentinels is explored a little more, particularly the impacts of the bond. Through Muir, we get to see the consequences when it's used wrong and it also adds a greater weight to the necessity of taking the admiral down as he's exploited these bonds so long. There were also sea monsters, which I very much enjoyed.

In all, this is a good ending to this dark fantasy series that continues to look at the idea of vengeance.

You will love this book (and the whole series)

If you like sea creatures, with a violent past and present

A richt fantasy world based on Scottish folklore, darkness and violence (but also lots of hope and love!)

Stunning (!) prose that will make you shiver and pierce through your heart.

A completed trilogy (no waiting for the next book)

Tides of Torments is the third and last in the Sea of Souls Saga. In the first book Isla Blackwood returns home from the sea to her family. After seven years apart she finds her family broken and pained. She might have come to late...

There is not much to say to a third book other than it concluded Isla's struggle to find her place, but saying this, wouldn't be enough. At its core this trilogy is about finding home and the question of how to end generational violence if everyone involved has forgotten peace.

This book kept my up past my bedtime, anxious to keep reading but unable to stop. The whole series build up hope and crushed my heart over and over again. All the while feeling the cold and sald and mist on my skin through this wonderful writing.

The ending was perfect and all these characters live rent free in my head now and I see a sea serpent when I close my eye. It was so good!!

I absolutely loved this series and I am gutted to have to say goodbye to Isla Blackwood, Darce and Lachlan. Currently, the majority of fantasy centres around dragons and insipid fae. This was a welcome relief. The story is set in a Scottish- based fantasy world and is the tale of a selkie lass. You will meet a kelpie and Cirein-croin along the way. The sprinkling of Scots and Gaelic are used to good effect. Something I feel very passionately about is that folklore should be tied back to the land or in this case the sea. The seagulls are practically screaming out of the pages along with the mist and the salt air. This is Scottish fantasy at its best.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I'm normally not good with continuing series or trilogies, but Scrimgeour's Sea of Souls trilogy is truly a special one that hooked me from book 1. This final book was filled with the dark, churning twists that, much like the oceans, kept sweeping me along. The author knows how to create a truly terrifying villain that you can't help but hate and wait for their demise. Ultimately, what this book does best is build on the relationship between characters, new and old, and bring about satisfying and heartbreaking conclusions. I teared up at the epilogue and loved seeing how this story all came together in the end.

Tides of Torment is a fantastic finale to a series I loved reading. I’m a big fan of stories that blend folklore into the characters and theme, and in this series the author does a masterful job on it all.
There is a lot of intensity, action, suspense and moving moments throughout this story, keeping the pages turning and the reader on the edge of their seat. An epic way to end it all.
This story, and series, is so easy to recommend and is worthy of a high rating.

An action packed finale! I had a blast reading this series, and Tides of Torment wrapped the trilogy up nicely!
