In the small West Texas town of Whynot, why not take a chance on three gorgeous men—even if two of them are rivals?
After a thousand disastrous first dates, I’ve almost given up on love. But when my crush’s rival swoops in and saves me from another date gone wrong, I have a one-night-stand that leaves me breathless and yearning for more.
I’m sure I’ll never see him again . . . Until two months later, he moves back to Whynot and stirs up trouble. Suddenly, I go from having no one I’m interested in to wanting three sexy men.
Nick Steele. My long-time crush’s enemy. The former bad boy who has a mullet, piercings everywhere, and the sweetest black cat.
Matthew Jacobs. The tall, sexy small town doctor. He’s sweet, nerdy, and gives me butterflies every single time he smiles.
Austin Whynot. My forever crush who’s never looked at me twice. He’s overprotective, sweet, loyal to a fault, and has been just a friend for years.
Three gorgeous men. Three gorgeous problems.
My only solution?
Take a chance . . . even if it possibly means losing it all.
In this MMMF small town romance, you’ll find
• One Night Stand • Why Choose Romance • Enemies to Lovers • Friends to Lovers • Hurt/Comfort • Spiciest book in the series
Prickly Pair is the third book in Whynot and can be read as a standalone.
First of all, thank you for the ARC of this book—it allowed me to finish the trilogy and finally see the HEA for this group of friends that I’ve really grown to love. ❤️💚💙 It’s not exactly the ending I expected, but it does wrap up the #Whynot series nicely. For those who are interested in reading the story out of order, it’s totally fine and not a problem, but you’ll just need to piece together the characters at the beginning.
This was my first MMFM romance, and I think I need to read more in this genre to fully understand my preferences. On one hand, I didn’t dislike it, but on the other, it didn’t completely click for me. At times, it almost felt like the dynamics worked better as MMM, even though for this specific story the MMFM setup still makes sense. The reason I say this is mainly Evie, the FMC, who unfortunately was my biggest struggle. I didn’t feel very connected to her, and at times I found myself more interested in the dynamics between the male characters rather than her place within the relationship. She works well in this dynamic as the “glue” that brings everyone together, but I didn’t feel she had much of a distinct personality that stood out to me—something I did notice more clearly with her friendships and the way she interacts with her friends.
The first half of the story felt very rushed. Everything happens so quickly that there’s barely time to settle into the relationships, and it gave me a similar feeling to Cactus Hearts, where things also move fast, but there, I immediately felt the chemistry. Here… not so much. Yes, there’s the spicy part and the lust, but it didn’t really translate into emotional connection for me, so I struggled to fully invest in the relationships early on. That said, I did appreciate how balanced the relationships were overall—no dynamic felt more important than the others, which is actually really impressive in a story like this.
As for the pairings: Evie x Matthew was sweet, and I liked how easily they shifted into something more intimate. Evie x Austin felt a bit off at the beginning—like they always started on the wrong foot—but I did enjoy them more once things finally shifted, even if I wish that development had happened differently. Evie x Nick was probably the strongest pairing involving her—both emotionally and physically. I really liked their first meeting and how their dynamic evolved.
Now for the more intense part: Matthew x Austin were really cute—I loved that Austin had a crush on him, and Matthew’s more dominant energy worked well for them. Matthew x Nick—I LOVED them. The way they go from strangers to something deeper was so well done, and their development genuinely made me emotional. But the pairing I wanted more of? Austin x Nick. Enemies in their teens?? Excuse me?? I needed more of that. I loved how persistent Nick was with Austin—I was eating that up.
Also… can we talk about Lucky? I wanted so much more of him. He made such a strong entrance and I was immediately obsessed.
From the second half onwards, the pacing improves and we finally get to see the relationships breathe a bit more. I really enjoyed watching them spend time together and build something more stable, even if I still wanted more emotional depth and romantic tension leading up to it.
Among all of them, Matthew was probably my favorite: his comforting, grounding presence really held the group together. Nick also had a nice character arc, even if I would’ve loved more page time for him, while Austin’s storyline had a lot of potential that could’ve been explored more deeply.
Overall, this is a fun, spicy, easy read with a strong found-family vibe. If you enjoy fast-burn romances with lots of spice and a “why choose” dynamic, you’ll probably have a great time with this. Personally, I just wish there had been more build-up, more emotional connection, and a bit more depth to fully love it.
Out of the many polyamorous romances I've read, this is one of the most (if not the most) evenly written between all of the characters' relationships. I didn't feel like any of the relationships was more or less important than the others, and that's actually really impressive since they're alllllll together. The FMC has three boyfriends who are boyfriends and we love to see it.
Fast burn with lots of spice. If you like it when she takes two cocks and they can *feel each other* this is your book. A bit insta-lovey in some parts but I did not care. No OW or OM drama.
Supportive side characters who obviously also have their own books in this series. I was surprised by how long it was, but it took that long for all of the relationships to develop despite the early start on the spice. Especially liked how one relationship developed, since I thought it would be explosive but ended up being endearing.
Thank you so much to Clio Evans for the opportunity to read and review Prickly Pair (and the whole Whynot series). As always, all opinions are my own.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, no one does queer normative and kink positive stories that hit your heart better than Clio Evans. We’re talking informed consent, responsible play scenes and so much emotional resonance that I could cry.
This is the final installment in the Whynot trilogy, and could definitely be read as a standalone, but treat yourself, trust me, and read the others. You deserve it.
Evie, baker and owner of Whynot Treat Yourself, has always fantasized about being in a poly relationship with 3 men. Dream big! Is it even possible?
It turns out… yes! Matthew, town doctor and nerdy hottie, is eager to help fulfill her fantasies. He bosses her around to keep her hydrated and tenderly takes care of her other needs…. And he’s perfect with his attraction to her former one night stand, Nick.
We need to talk about Nick. He’s a cat dad with a mullet and a Jacob’s ladder. There is no world where I ever thought I’d find a mullet attractive…. But maybe yes now? He’s such a brat and such a delight! He loves openly with his whole heart and has a sassy way of showing it that will sneak up on you.
Last in the group is Austin. He’s our best friend’s older brother. He hates Nick with a fiery passion. He’s attracted to Matthew but doesn’t know what to do about it and if he ever stopped to think about himself, he’d discover that he’s attracted to Evie (and obvs Nick, no one carries that level of bitterness and angst over someone they don’t want to bone). Austin hit me in all the feels. He takes care of everyone and everything except himself and he doesn’t know how to stop. This man needs someone to tell him. To force him to rest. And to just take care of him.
There’s some minor suspense in this story as well, but the bulk of it is wrapped around the emotional and physical needs of these characters as they attempt to find a happily ever after.
I got to beta read Prickly Pair and yall ain’t ready! This is my favorite in the series for sure! Evie is so cute snd relatable. Matthew is a sexy nerd who is also a snappy dressing doctor (talk about swoon). Nick is a tattooed, mullet rocking brat with a dirty mouth and a heart of gold. Austin is babygirl. I will be taking no questions on that. Poor baby has been put THROUGH it but his devotion and tenderness was so sweet.
If you like kink, queer rep, the spiciest of spice, friends to lovers and rivals to lovers you’re going to love Prickly Pair.
“Do I need to be your water Dom, Evie?” (OMG I SWOOONN)
‼️If you want a book with sweet emotional vulnerability where the boyfriends are boyfriends with high heat, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!‼️
I am so sad to be leaving Whynot, Tx! This was a super spicy and sweet ending to a terrific series! I loved these characters all so much, I will say I definitely shed some tears reading those final pages! The Whynot series are interconnected standalones, but I think you need to read the first two because you meet several of these main characters and it helps with some context. This book really dives head first into relationship building and emotional vulnerability.
I love these characters and I love their relationship arcs. This book provides many moments of connections between various groupings. I adore the way that the relationships bloom differently, and at different paces, within the group. At the end of the day this was such a joy to relax into and read. I am so happy I finally got to read Evie’s ‘sexily ever after’!
What’s Inside ❤️ Small Town Contemp Romance ❤️ MMMF ❤️ Best Friend’s Brother ❤️ Cat Dad ❤️ One Night Stand ❤️ Hurt/Comfort
I plan to return soon to the town of Whynot (in the form of rereads) when I get my physical copies. Definitely ones that I would love to annotate!
This is the third book in the Whynot Series of interconnected standalones. While it can be read by itself it will really be best enjoyed after reading the first two books in the series.
I was gifted a copy of this book by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you!
OK first of all, I have a massive complaint: we got WAY TOO LITTLE screen time of Lucky the Cat. Justice for my man and his lil paws!
Now onto the book.
This has been my favorite in the Whynot series because I, too, am a chaotic bisexual with tattoos and piercings.
I loved the dynamic here with Austin, Evie, Matthew (Zadddyyyy) and Nick. It was also really lovely to see all the other characters and their progressions *shout out to my boy Mateo & girl Juni!* and it was just an all around great book. It's so important to see a normalization of queer stories in main stream media, built on more than pain and sadness.
Anyways, read this book. Adopt a black cat. Move to a small town and get three boyfriends who are also boyfriends. Why not?
I could tell pretty quickly that this book was going to be my fave of the series and it absolutely was!!
These four are honestly the most adorable people ever and I loved seeing them all fall in love!
I love all the communication! Evie has always been honest with Avery about her feelings for her brother, the moment she realised that Matthew liked her back she asked him on a date but was also honest about how she felt for Austin and Nick! There were no secrets and everyone knew where they stood the entire time!
Evie and Matthews first date was my absolute favourite, it was the cutest thing ever!! In fact, everyones first one on one date nights were the cutest!
I’m so sad to leave all these characters from this series behind but I had the best time reading this and i loved every minute!
4.3 stars. This was super fun, and the sex was hot, but I would’ve really liked some more actual dates and getting to know you moments instead of only smut.🤷🏻♀️ Not that the smut wasn’t good, cause it totally was.

We’ve finally reached the end of the “Whynot” series 🥲 What a journey it has been for the Whynot siblings and their partners 😚 Thank you Clio adding yet another series to my comfort reads 😂
I loved the dynamic of Evie, Nick, Matthew and Austin 😍 We got a bit of everything - rivals to lovers, second chance at love, long term crush 😘
I'm glad Evie was able to find her happy ending 😘 Having witnessed her 2 best friends Avery and June find their happiness with 2 people, it made her want to have that for herself. Who would have thought that a bad date would lead to her finding not 1, not 2, but 3 boyfriends. All made up of the men she's been dreaming about -the towns local doctor, her one night stand and the guy she's been trying to get over 😂
I fell in love with Nick's character 😌 He didn't have it easy growing up and because Austin had the family he always wanted, he took his rage out on him. After being abandoned by his mother at 16, he was left to fend for himself and because no-one wanted to help the "problem child", he had no choice but to live in his car for the remainder of the school year 😔 After finishing school, he decided to leave Whynot and start something new 😢 Considering everything he went through, he was still a positive person who wanted to help those in need. When Evie accidentally burnt herself, he and Austin put their hatred to the side (Well... as much as they could in that moment) and worked together to help serve the customers in her bakery so that she could go to the hospital with Matthew. When she was out of commission due to her injury, he made sure that her oven was fixed before she returned to work so that she wouldn't hurt herself again. He even went to help Austin with a roof repair, and they were still considered "rivals" at this point in the book 😚 It just showed us that he didn't let the past affect his present and because of this, he was able to find a family that welcomed him with open arms 🤗
My favourite moment of Nick's was when he went over to Austin's place to check on him and found him suffering from a burnout 😔 Seeing Austin in a venerable state, he decided that he wanted to be venerable with him and shared memories of his childhood that he'd never shared with anyone ☺️🥲 I saw it as the moment where they both finally waved their white flags and decided that they didn't want to hate each other anymore 😩🥹 I'm glad it was Nick that helped him in his time of need 🥹 Nothing against anyone else, I'm sure they all would have jumped in to help but it meant so much more coming from Nick. It made their moment of becoming a couple that more special 🥰
For all the things I'd been telling myself I hated about Nick, it was all hitting me now that I'd been wrong. They were all the things I loved about him. His intelligence. His kindness. The way he would always jump into help. The way he pushed himself to grow. His resilience. I had no idea what he'd gone through when we were younger, but he'd made himself into something. He'd gone and fought to succeed despite not having the support he deserved from loved ones. And god, I loved his cock. I loved the piercings. I loved his fucking mullet. Why was the mullet so hot? This man had been the bane of my existence for so long. Enemies in high school, always fighting, always pushing each other. And then he'd shown back up in town, taking a piece of my home-and I was so fucking glad he did. I was happy.
Austin won the jackpot with Evie, Matthew and Nick 🥰 Without them, he never would've had the courage to open up and let people in 🫶🏼 He was the character that had the most character development and I've been rooting for him to find his HEA since the first moment we saw him in "Cactus Heart" 💞
My heart hurt for Matthew 😢 Finding out that his girlfriend of 3 years had died in a drunk driving accident 😔 And he thought that she was going to be the one he’d end up marrying 😭 Evie, Nick and Austin were the reasons as to why he wanted to try again after so many years of being alone 😩
”Have you dated anyone since?” “I’ve had sex,” he said softly. “But I haven’t dated again, no.” Our date was a big deal, then. And it suddenly dawned on me why he wanted to be the one driving. I blinked back the tears then reached over, sliding my hand over his thigh. I let it rest there, not really sure what else to say. “I’m sorry, Matthew”
I felt so lucky to be here with them. Lucky to have them in my life. How long had I wished to fall in love again? Years.
For so many years, I’d been running from my past. Trying to heal from losing the woman I loved, so convinced that I would never care for another person again. But then I met Evie. I met Austin. I met Nick. The three of them had healed all the broken pieces inside me, and I had so much hope for what we could do together.
Dominant Matthew 🥵 I did not see that coming 🤭 I thought he was going to be the submissive one of the group but OHHHHH, I’m so glad I was wrong about this 😝 That MMM scene was the icing on the cake 💦 With Matthew and Nick taking Austin at the same time 💥🤩🫡🥵🫶🏼 and Evie “secretly” watching from behind the door 🤫 I loved every second of it 🤭
This story ends with a HEA for this Quad Couple 🥰

I have really enjoyed every book in Clio Evan’s charming little Why Not trilogy - what’s not to love about a small town where everyone is bisexual and polyamorous?! Frankly sounds like paradise.
Prickly Pair was another highly enjoyable read - super spicy with a big slice of kinky fun and a whole lot of heart. Each character felt fleshed out and vivid, with their own journeys and enough air time in POV chapters to do them justice. I really enjoyed the enemies to lovers vibe with Nick and Austin and the hurt/comfort trope. Matthew was such a gentle and grounding character and I loved seeing both Nick and Austin’s vulnerability as the story went on. Evie was a delight and it was really nice to see our favourite characters from Cactus Heart and Thorn Kiss again!
Prickly Pair is an ideal contemporary romance if you’re looking for an easy read that’s full of heart and packed with spicy scenes - and Clio really does do excellent spice! Would def recommend to anyone who loves a why choose where the boyfriends are boyfriends too ♥️
I received an ARC and am leaving a review voluntarily ♥️
I recommend this book to fans of poly relationships and cozy and kinky small town romance.
This is going to be a long one so buckle up!
This is the last book in the Whynot series and while it can be read as a standalone. That being said, I strongly recommend reading the first two books. It will give you a complete look at Austin’s arc. The characters from the first two books are in this but the author does a great job catching you up on who they are and their connections to each other.
I ate this book up! It's been a while since I stayed up late to finish a book because I couldn't put it down and was so invested in the characters. The book is composed of four main characters: Evie, Nick, Mathew and Austin. Each character brings something to their poly quad that makes it work. I LOVED Nick. If that man was real I would want to be his friend or lover (if I was also single in this world). When he said start the clock. I knew he was going to be my favorite. Once he showed up to Whynot and started giving Austin a hard time, I knew he was going to be my favorite kind of chaos. He is also a Cat Daddy. Then tell me he is also a Switch, I was done and down for Nick. Mathew was the softness and the supportive rock all three of his partners needed. As the town doc he is naturally protective and caring for all his partners. Wasn't surprised he liked to be dominant. It was a good contrast to how sweet and gentle he is outside of the bedroom. Evie, what can I say, I had been waiting for her story for a while and was ready. Loved that she was up for a good time and was confident. She is described as curvy and full figured and I loved that her weight was never a negative or a weird fetish. She was just the center of their world. When it came to Austin I was ready to see this man break. He was a tight rope ready to snap. Finding out he also had established feelings for Evie was a great touch. Having him be more of a submissive in the bedroom was right on point for his character too.
I honestly loved how this poly-quad came to be. They each get their time with Evie and with the other partners. From one night stands, to dating, to finally giving in to the feelings that have been there all along it was chefs kiss. I enjoyed seeing the relationship with Nick and Austin develop because they were dislike to lovers. I think having two of Austin's partners be new to Whynot was perfect for him. I liked that there was a good mix of dominant and submissive. Also, experience levels were a good mix. Even though the book didn't go too in detail, I appreciated that the characters discussed safewords, limits, boundaries and list of kinks and where each one stood on them. Also, I have to mention how much I loved that we had a “water dom”, a “cat daddy” , men that whimpered, daddy kink between the MMCs and consent kings.
I know this book was about four people but for me this was so much about Austin finally grieving and accepting help. His story arc from book one to the end of this book was great. I was waiting to find out how he would snap after being pulled in so many directions and putting so much stress on himself and I think this book did a great job of depicting it. I feel like functioning depression can be hard to depict but I saw it and I felt it with Austin’s story. Having Nick, the outsider, be the one to pull him out of it was a great touch because he is the only one who knew him before Austin’s dad died. He hadn't lived in the town since high school and he never needed anything from Austin even then.
I loved the epilogues and seeing all the Whynots and their partners happy with their own little families with both human and fur babies. What I absolutely loved was that June and her partners didn't have kids. Emphasizing that HEA doesn't have to include children and family looks like however you want it to.
Overall, I loved this book. It's probably my favorite in the series. Would recommend over and over gain.
What a fun mix of wholesome and super-smutty (hello, smexy times in the first chapters) this turned out to be! I am still reeling over how flawlessly Clio managed to integrate the four of them without sacrificing any of their personalities or passions, which I’ve found other books often struggle with when you start adding more than two people to a relationship. All four of them were strong characters with sturdy foundations both morally and in the “have their lives together” sense so no one had to grow a backbone or seemed like an add-on, and I loved that. There were, of course, flaws and issues that needed to be resolved with each of them (done SO well), they weren’t “perfect” separately or together, there was still conflict, but the way that it was handled felt more realistic to me? But not in a “ugh, I read for escape and this is too real” way, because I was very much invested and it was a beautiful escape from the real world for several hours.
Each character was wonderfully fleshed out; I didn’t feel like any one character was more important than the other. And I enjoyed the supporting characters enough that I really want to go back and read their stories now too. The town dynamic was also intriguing and made me want to go back and read more. I love when small-town romances enmesh actual small-town living, with NPCs so to speak, that are very involved without actually needing to be involved-involved. Its not just a quirky trope the author tacked on, but a crucial setting piece to their story, and Clio did that really well.
I can’t talk too much more about the intimacy/smutty portions (which were phenomenal, even the kinks that weren’t my thing) or the characters without giving things away, and I’m trying to be more spoiler free in my ARC reviews, lol. But I *really* loved the tension between Nick and Austin, and the way that things comes together hit so many good buttons for me. (Chapter 38 was my favorite!) Their dynamic together and their dynamic with the others were so satisfying. Honestly the way all four had different dynamics with each other was incredibly satisfying and I found myself wanting to be a fly on the wall of all the date combinations — Clio could probably write a whole nother book about just the different combinations both in and out of the bedroom, with maybe some bonus material about how they interact with the big friend group, and I would eat that right up!
Which ties into my only real criticism of the book — the ending (after everything is resolved and they have their “they live happily ever after, the end” moment), it wasn’t formatted like a proper epilogue, so the time skips were a little confusing, but they were also a bit lackluster. They felt more like little teases. There was one that felt particularly teasing, with the ribbon… I wanted the unwrapping scene lmao. We got so many other incredible group scenes though, the spice was 100% spicin’ as Clio Evans’ books always do, so I should be happy with what we got but ugh, it sounded so good!! Clio set it up perfectly, I wanted to see that particular set of dominoes fall.
Anyway, this was a really fun and steamy read, and I def recommend it for WhyChoose fans that love when “TAF” (they all f***).
Thank you to the author, Clio, and their team, for the honor of reviewing an early copy!
(PS this is less to do with reviewing the ARC and more to do with my own personal tastes and notes, but I think Clio Evans has gotten a LOT better about content notes, which I really appreciate. I read some earlier material and felt woefully unprepared for what was involved and while it wasn’t triggering, it was uncomfy. The last few things I’ve read for them, this included, felt much more thorough and thoughtful. I thought it was worth mentioning here because I love to see when authors grow.)
Clio Evans hit it out of the park again with this one. Evie is an amazing and realistic FMC. She is a no nonsense entrepreneur, confident in her body and how she deserves to be treated in life. But her heart has always belonged to a boy to busy to notice. Evie decides she done sitting on the sidelines waiting and in walks Nick. Tattooed, confident, Cat Daddy with a blonde mullet. What he hides behind that smile & bravado is a man who wants a family. Will Evie be the one to open his eyes to the idea that settling down and giving his heart away won't hurt. He's not the only one with his eyes set on our FMC though. Look out for the Hot doc who wants to be her water Dom and is nerdy to boot. He's also carrying a heavy past, can he open up and "finally start putting the pieces back together again". Last but certainly not least is Austin, the last of the Whynot family. He has his hands, head and heart loaded down with so many things... could he find space for the girl he's quietly held a flame for his whole life? What about the hot Doc that he can't look at without blushing? And the rival who he has fought with his whole life? Whynot open their hearts to the possibility to find love and so much more!!!
This book is not just smut, although Clio Evans can write smut like no other. There is so much substance behind their characters and I have honestly fell in love with them myself. I wanted to hold Nick when I read more about his life and punch his mom in the face. I wanted to weep with Matthew learning, what brought him to Whynot, Texas. Austin makes me yell and scream out loud *Listen to your people they love you* (Which I actually did and scared my husband). Evie. Dear sweet horny, confident but also overthinking Evie. She made me think about how I feel about my body. Made me buy more dresses and say F you to anyone who thinks negatively when they look at me. I saw a bit of myself in all these characters from Prickly Pair. I'm sad to see them go but so happy I got to read this book.
I've never ARC read a book before. I want to say thank-you for the opportunity to say Whynot and push myself out of my comfort zone, fall in love and learn a little about myself in the process.
I just knew this one would make me giggle constantly! I found the first two in the series not realizing this one came out a few weeks later and I have just been waiting.
I am so in love with the town of WhyNot. Can’t I just live there?
Evie is the sweetheart of our girl trio (Avery, June, Evie) and really deserved her happy ending. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, trying to build a joint and individual relationships with each character but I think having seen a bit in the first two plus the shared history with Austin/Evie and Austin/Nick really helped to set the stage without too much character development. I mean there’s no doubt this is meant to be a cute, smutty read and it totally delivers on that. But I still feel like Clio did a great job of helping us feel connected to the characters. I do wonder though if I had not read the other two if I would feel that way. Something to consider if you’re picking this one up.
I really loved the Austin/Nick story. I mean it was obvious that they liked each other but I think they can both offer someone to one another that they need. It felt perfect that Nick was the one to help Austin because if he’s going to let his guard down it had to be the person who he’s most defensive with.
I will admit I probably felt least connected to Dr. Matthew. I mean he’s just a nerdy guy with a kinky side. I got why he moved there but I think I would have taken a few more chapters to learn about him more.
Also, the “conflict” in the story was resolved very easily for me and again I think that’s some of the point but I would have loved to see a little more conflict. However, Austin had so much internal conflict it was probably worth it to not put him through even more. He wouldn’t have survived.
I think this might be my favorite of them all, but truly this whole series was exactly what I needed this time of year. It’s dark and cold where I live and to bring such cheery characters and love into my life was perfect. Plus I’m a sucker for a poly romance. 😏🥰
I third my issues with this one as the other, spicy heavy and more aftercare please (however this one did that better) but I also recognize the books for what they are. And I love them!
Miss Evans has done it again, and trumped my favourite book with another incredible banger of a book!!! Someone (and I will happily do so myself) give this woman her fucking flowers!! 💐
Every time I have come close to thinking of how I want to write my review, I come close to tears that this incredible series and its loveable characters has come to an end. Everyone is sickeningly happy in love, and living their best kinkiest lives, and I’m NOT OKAY, well I am, but I’ll be sobbing in the corner about how much I love them all!!!
I have been waiting, not so patiently for my girl Evie’s book, and CLIO DID NOT COME TO DISAPPOINT!! I wish to be reincarnated as Evie, in my fictional life, bake goods and be sandwiched, spit roasted between three hot men please!!! 😩
Clio also wasn’t joking when she said that this was the spiciest book in the series, I almost did not survive the MMM Eiffel Tower, and four way, omgg, love, I loveeddd it.
I loved also when Austin finally let down his impenetrable walls, and who better than his sworn rival from high school. He really had it coming, and has come such a long way from his sister’s books, in Cactus Heart.
Excuse me Nick, he was a literal dream, tattooed, pierced, a cat dad, need I actually say more, but I can go on, he literally worshiped the ground that Evie, Austin and Matt walked on. I loved him!
And I can’t forget Mr hotshot, Dr daddy Jabobs!! I knew from the teasers that we saw of him in Thorn Kiss that I was gonna love him, and I absolutely do 😮💨😩
And all three men doted on Evie, like the queen that she was. Gosh, Evie is really the luckiest girl in Whynot!! 🤭
Seriously, I don’t think I could ever quite put into words just how incredible this series is Clio has created; with all its small town charm, polyamory positivity, and kink galore, I only wish that Whynot was a real place! It’s a series I will fondly think about and re-read again and again!
Thank you endlessly to Clio Evans and Clio's PA, Meg, for the e-arc of Prickly Pair, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.
“I need you to know that no one is perfect. I’m certainly not. But it’s all of those imperfections that make you you, and I love you, the good and the bad.”
As always another amazing book by Clio Evans. I love the feeling of care and love that I always get from Clio’s books and I will always read every book published. I enjoyed seeing how Clio makes it work with four people so easily and makes it understandable how it could. When compared to other authors where it doesn’t and feels like the extra partners aren’t needed.
I enjoyed the idea of a small town focused series and how it played a role in how the characters acted toward eachother such as how they are a close-knit community of friends and family being helpful and supporting each other. The other part that happens in a community like that is everyone knows each other very well and sometimes there’s tension between people from past issues, which is what happened with two of the MMC, Nick and Austin.
My favorite thing about Clio Evans’ writing is that I always love the characters. They always have so much depth to them and I love seeing their growth throughout the book. Each character has their own issues that they need to work through making them more individual and it makes me connect to them on a deeper level. The message I always get from these books is that no one is perfect and we all have things that we need to work on, but everyone always deserves love and support no matter what.
It wouldn’t be a Clio Evans book without spicy scenes, which there are the perfect amount for me, but it’s always deeper than just the smut. My favorite quote was the “water Dom” I died laughing when I read that because I’m like that with my friends and family making sure everyone is drinking enough water, but I’ve never thought of it that way. The only thing I wish there were more of would be more time with Lucky. I loved him and how he acted reminded me of my own cat.
Thank you so much for the opportunity for this ARC in exchange for my honest review! I highly recommend this book.
Tropes: 🧁MMMF 🏍small town 🩺high school rivals to lovers 🧁one night stand 🏍friends to lovers 🩺🥵🥵🥵 (and k!nky!) 🧁best friend's brother
What do you mean this is the last time we'll be in Whynot, Texas 😭😭😭. While I'm so so sooo happy that these three girlfriends all got their respective HEAs, I'm so sad to be leaving this little town. Clio never fails to make just the best little small towns, paired with high heat, and why choose stories of people falling in love, just the perfect trifecta.
Town baker, Evie, has finally decided that it is HER TIME to find love, but after a disastrous number of first dates, she ends up running into the bad boy growing up, Nick Steele, who just also happens to be the rival of her long time crush, Austin Whynot, brother of her best friend. After a one night stand leaves them both wanting more, Nick is back in town. But why have one, when you can have three?! Can these four figure out a way to be all together, or will they just be left with longing looks in a town that's definitely way too small for all of them.
This book was FUN, y'all, and absolutely no doubt about it, the spiciest book in the series. At times, i actually found it to be a little much, as much as I love spice, ESPECIALLY k!nky spice. Despite that, I really did love this book. Super fast paced, with these four falling fast and hard (well some of them with others, at least haha). I loved seeing Evie really come into her own in this story, and finally putting herself first, with some help from some of her men, of course. But more importantly, AUSTIN'S ARC! While we haven't gotten any of his POV until this book, that man was absolutely running himself raggedly with the weight of his family on his shoulders after the passing of their dad. Seeing the other guys and Evie (and the rest of their group) finally get clued in to everything happening and all of them leaning on each other just made my heart SOARRRR.
Ugh, I'm going to miss this entire found family so much <33. Thank you so much to Team Clio for the eARC!
Where do I even begin with this fantastic finale to Clio Evan’s ‘why not’ series?
I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to have read Prickly Pair early!
I was so excited to read Evie’s story, that I devoured this one in just 2 days! I’ve been so dying to get more of Evie, though sad it’s the last book in the series, I couldn’t be happier that she’s our finale!
I was absolutely squealing after only the first 17 pages!! Clio Evans - you have done it again!
In the first chapter, we are introduced to Nick and holy hell, that man is pure sin with a sugar glaze on top! He’s funny, he’s kind, and he’s an absolute brat!
We then get to see Whynots’ cute Doctor, Matthew, again. He’s ever the charming gentleman we first met in Thorn Kiss but, it turns out this Doc is hiding a few spicy secrets! He’s the water dom of Whynot - with a brilliant Magic the Gathering, and DnD collection!
It was especially great getting to learn more about Austin Whynot - especially since the previous two books in the series showcase him mostly as just an overworked hothead. Having the chance to peel back some of those layers, and getting to see the soft and caring side of Austin was truly so lovely and emotional to read.
It was also wonderful to see the growth Mrs Whynot has had since we first met her in Cactus Heart - though we didn’t see much of her in Thorn Kiss, she really did have her shining moment in Prickly Pair.
Clio Evan’s really does have a gift for writing her characters with so much humanity - using their “flaws” as the thing that really does keep us reading on into the early hours until we see a happy ending for them.
Prickly Pair brings us the drama, the humour, and the romance all rolled up into a truly perfect bake. And for that reason, it gets a 5 out of 5 from me!
I do have one question for Clio Evan’s though - is Lasagna your favourite food?
“I’m done waiting. Why not go fast? Why not dive in? Why not take a chance on three gorgeous men?”
Sono sicura che amerete questa serie come l’ho amata io ❤️ Clio Evans, you did it again!
This book was such a fun and emotional ride, and I’m already missing the charm of Whynot, Texas. There must be something in the water in that town, because the relationships and connections feel larger than life in the best way. Clio Evans truly delivered a memorable and satisfying conclusion to this series.
Evie, the baker and owner of Whynot Treat Yourself, has always dreamed of being in a poly relationship with three men, and watching that dream unfold was both heartfelt and compelling. The story leans heavily into emotional vulnerability and relationship building, and it does so beautifully. Each character feels fully developed, with their own voice and importance, and no one gets lost in the dynamic.
One of my favorite aspects was how the relationships evolved at different paces within the group. The connections felt natural and distinct, and I loved seeing the different bonds grow and deepen over time. It made the overall relationship arc feel authentic and incredibly rewarding.
The small-town setting continues to shine in this installment. Whynot, Texas feels alive, with a community that is present and engaging without overwhelming the story. The town isn’t just a backdrop, it plays an essential role in shaping the characters and their journeys, which adds so much depth to the reading experience.
While this can technically be read as a standalone, I would definitely recommend reading the first two books in the series. Getting to know the characters beforehand adds context and makes the emotional moments land even harder.
This was such a warm, emotional, and at times bittersweet ending. I truly loved these characters and their journeys, and I even found myself tearing up in those final chapters. It was a joy to sink into this story, and I’m so glad I finally got to experience Evie’s happily ever after.
A fantastic conclusion to the standalone small town why choose romance series!
We start this story off spicy, as our FMC is saved from her bad date by an old high school acquaintance that had left town years ago. She has the best night of her life before she sneaks out of his hotel room, only for him to show up a few months later back in the little town of Whynot at her bakery. On this exciting day of his return our FMC has an accident with one of the ovens causing a burn on her arm, luckily the town doctor is there to help her out. Unfortunately our Whynot MMC is not excited the old high school bad boy is back, and has to come to terms with his feelings.
This is definitely the spiciest of the book of the series, with more MCs the dynamics and exploring are endless. We get some wonderful, enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, and childhood friends to lovers (finally), each progressing on their own timeline. The way each relationship is given its own time to grow is a staple of this author and one of my favourite things.
We explore the growth of one MMC in particular as his struggle has been made apparent throughout the series. That’s not to say we don’t get to know the other MCs and their traumas, but there is always one with the most drastic growth in the group of MCs.
One of the issues in particular that the MMC is dealing with bleeds into the lives of the other MCs and becomes a bigger problem in the latter half. As this is a romance book it doesn’t resolve itself very quickly towards the end.
We once again, get a wonderful time skipping last chapter that shows off all the promises that were made for the future and how our MCs are enjoying their HEA. This also includes glimpses into the previous MCs as their lives are all intertwined.
I’m going to miss this little town, but I thoroughly enjoyed this last book and it wrapped things up beautifully!
I knew I was gonna love this book, but wow, it completely wrecked me in the best way. I was hooked immediately and stayed glued to my Kindle the whole time. One of those reads where you keep saying just one more chapter and suddenly it is 3am. The writing pulled me right in and everything felt so real and intense and addictive.
These characters own my heart. All four of them just fit together in a way that felt so natural and so right. Usually I pick a favorite, not this time, absolutely not, I refuse. Austin hurt my soul, the weight he was carrying had me wanting to hug him through the page, and watching him finally accept love and support was everything. Matthew is this sweet, hot doctor who is lowkey a menace when he wants to be, and Nick is chaotic, hilarious, and secretly the softest person ever. Their tension had me giggling and stressing at the same time.
And Evie, I loved her so much. She knows exactly what she wants and goes for it, but she is also so warm and caring and just brings out the best in everyone. The relationships felt so genuine, the love and communication and vulnerability just hit different. This is exactly why I love poly romances, the emotional depth is on another level.
I am honestly not okay that this series is over. This might be my favorite one and I feel way too attached to all of them now. It felt like coming home every time I picked it up and now I do not want to leave. If you are even thinking about reading this series, why not do it? you’ll be obsessed for sure.
TROPES 🩷Small town 🩷One Night Stand 🩷MMMF / Why Choose 🩷Enemies to Lovers 🩷Friends to Lovers 🩷Hurt/Comfort
So I already knew that I was gonna love this book but omg this story surpassed every single expectation that I had. I genuinely couldn’t put my kindle down I was hooked from start to finish. The author writing was so good the way she described every single character and all the emotions was so satisfying. The four of them are the perfect match, I loved how everything developed so naturally. With the other two books for me was so easy choosing my favorite character but with this one it’s impossible I loved every single one of them. Austin was so emotionally intense i wanted to know more about him from the very beginning, the grief and all the weight that he’s been carrying were heartbreaking and i’m so glad that he finally learned how to ask for help and especially I’m glad that he accepted all the love he deserved. Matthew he’s this nerdy hot doctor that’s so damn adorably cute, he’s smart, caring and he definitely knows how to be a dominant. Nick is a bratty smart ass with a very dirty mind but at the same time he’s such a big teddy bear, I loved the rivalry between him and Austin the tension was so strong omg their bickering got me giggling a lot the scene at Austin house was so emotional and of course how can I not mention that he’s also an adorable cat dad. Evie was amazing I loved her from the very beginning, she knows what’s she wants and especially how to get it. She’s so caring, funny such a sweetheart with a very dirty mind. The whynot series was so incredible good i enjoyed every single bits of it im so sad that is over now, i really recommend these books!
I discovered Clio last year and I’m going to say that Evie, Matthew, Austin and Nick were so much fun. Their book is definitely my favorite out of the books that I’ve read by Clio. She is definitely going to be author I really want to continue to read because I’m obsessed with her why choose romances.
I really loved how the book started when Nick rescued Evie from probably one of the worst dates ever and then the two had a one nights stand. From the moment that the book starts, she has always wanted multiple partners.
There were a few times when I wanted to shake Evie because I thought she had lost her mind, especially the moment when Nick fell off the roof. That whole scene made me hurt in my feelings. I was glad that she did realize she wanted more with Austin and not a friendship. Girl lost her mind. Haha.
I love me a good enemies to lovers and man, when Nick and Austin get together, I was all for it. I kind of wished we got more from them because come on, they were just too cute. Before they got together, Austin’s thoughts about Nick had me giggling because he had been in love with him for so long.
And Matthew. I loved this man because he was such a caretaker. I loved how he always made sure they were cleaned up and drank water after their intimacy. And when Nick called him “Daddy” the first time, I was a goner.
And Lucky… the cutest cat ever. I just loved him so much.
I just loved how these four came together at the most perfect way, whether it was protection, to be loved, and to not be alone. They were perfect for one another in each and every way.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
I was already hooked from when I read the preview at the end of Thorn Kiss and I knew that I was going to love it. Prickly Pair is INDEED the spiciest out of all the books in the WhyNot series and I was seated for the whole thing. This book is a FMMM why choose book obviously set in the small town of Why Not and just thinking about the book again while reviewing makes me want to read it all over again. I loved all the characters and the fact that the characters from the other WhyNot books make an appearance just makes the whole story come together. I freaking fell in love with Evie because she was a strong female character that wasn't afraid of what she wanted and SHE KNEW what she wanted too, which is like so attractive. Nick and Austin, 2 of the 4 members of this relationship definitely had some stuff to work through throughout the story which definitely gave the story some pizazz because I was on the edge of my seat whenever they bickered. Matthew, oh sweet Matthew, the town doctor was literally just the sweetest and I just wanted to give him a hug because hes so lovable. From beginning to end, I just felt butterflies in my stomach not only from the spice but the whole dynamics of the relationships and just UGH FOUND FAMILY TROPE too makes me all sappy because its so freaking cute. Also definitely a HEA that made me cry, because i'm a cry baby to happily ever afters. 😭
I wish there was more to the WhyNot series because I'm so invested. Thank you Clio Evans for giving the wonderful opportunity to read an eARC of this perfect book.
𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 jump into a new spicy MMMF romance with a tattooed and pierced cat dad, a Zaddy who’s also a doctor, an adorable baker who is confident and sassy, and an overworked, stubborn but dependable and lovable best friends older brother!
I LOVED this book and the characters! We got to explore them all individually and together and each brought something unique to the harem. Evie was the perfect FMC! Ugh I just want to be her! Daddy Matthew, gosh I love a confident and intellectual man! He had no problem taking charge! The history between rivals Nick and Austin and seeing all that play out to them finally coming full circle .. wow it was beautifully done! Poor Austin, that man has been through it! I loved that while they all worked through their feelings that we also had the subplot of the debt collector and we got to see all the previous characters! The chemistry between everyone?!! Holy Crap! 10/10.. those scenes were hot AF and I ate it up!! 🔥🥵 I love a why choose where the boyfriends are boyfriends and loved they had their ow scenes and intimacy. The emotional connections and how really worked through issues it was so good!! The found family trope really hit, especially for Nick! Gosh it was so good! Can’t forget about Nicks baby Lucky the black cat!! 😍🐈⬛ If you want a wholesome but spicy why choose the I highly recommend adding this to your TBR!

🥐One Night Stand 🔥Why Choose Romance 🧰Enemies to Lovers 🏡Friends to Lovers 🩺Hurt/Comfort
This is a mostly light, spicy third installment in a fun poly romance series, and as long as you enjoy insta-love and lots of spice then this one is for you. 🔥😉🥵
Evie's meet-cute with Nick, the tension between Austin and Nick & the competition ignited by Nick's reappearance that got Austin out of his head finally, and the calm center of them all that is Matthew was great fun and super hot to get into. However, the insta-love was a bit much for me, and the subplot of Austin's grief & the loan shark after him weren't as developed as I would have liked. Matthew and Evie were lacking in character development too, and I won't say it detracted too much from my enjoyment of the story, I just wanted a bit more from them. Nick's character development was actually pretty good despite not getting much time with him. I really enjoyed getting to watch him go from the playboy who used his body and humor to distract himself from what he was missing, to the found family and security he got from their relationship in the end.
Overall this is a sexy, fun read about a haphazard group of people who all fall in love with each other and have some really hot sex, and for that it is a great read. If you're looking for more from the story, well you're not getting it here, but there's nothing wrong with that either. You do not have to read the first two books to enjoy this one, but they are filled with more hot poly love stories, so you may want to check them out too. 😏
*I received an advanced copy of this book and am leaving an honest review.
