Can love conquer all when the odds are impossibly stacked?
After weeks of chaos spent defeating the drachen and burning the dead god Narc’s bones in a phoenix fire to save the people of Tirene, Lark eagerly awaits the culmination of her unexpected but extraordinary love story with Sterling. In one month, Lark will marry Prince Knox Sterling Barda, who will ascend the throne to become king of Tirene.
Yet happiness lies just beyond their grasp.
Strange occurrences interrupt Tirene’s celebration of the impending nuptials. A mysterious wedding gift of dangerous magic that transforms water into diamonds. Stone statues coming to life and attacking people. Objects missing for years suddenly reappearing in their owners’ homes. Not everyone is happy with the new normal...especially the gods...and they’re sending a message.
Or a warning.
Lines have been drawn that leave Lark and Sterling with an impossible choice. War is coming again. And this time, Lark and Sterling will either change the world...or lose everything.
Impossible magic, breathtaking romance, and inescapable duty clash in Empire of Reckoning and Ruin, the climactic fifth and final installment of the Dragons of Tirene series by best-selling author Nina Frost.
What. And I cannot stress this enough, the actual f*ck even was that?!
This series and this book especially was pedestrian at best, an MI-6, CIA, secret ops torture weapon at its lower points.
This entire book could have been an email (or even a two page epilogue). Let’s break down this whole thing for you, so that you can save yourself and your eyes a heck of a lot of time and unnecessary torture:
Book one: not bad, a solid idea where the best way to describe it would be if fourth wing and between life and death had a baby but you ordered it from wish
Books 2&3: basically this is the powerless series books two and mostly three on crack (not in a good way and those were especially bad). Jasper is basically Kit, but make it longer and more arduous.
Book 4: this is basically filler but a few people die. We should care but we don’t because again, the books are crazy long and not much of any importance happens until the end of this book. The whole plot is basically wrapped up yet there will be a fifth book.. you will ask yourself why that is… you will NEVER get those answers because it is absolutely pointless. The ending was also so bad in this book.. four books for that? Yikes.
Spoiler ahead *** Book 5: an exercise in patience and a litmus test to see how much intensive torture your eyeballs can withstand yet stay in your head for. There is no point. None at all. To this entire book. Here are the main points: Sterling and Lark get married. Sterling gets crowned king. Nothing else of any importance happens. What was the point of this series? Great question. Should you read this series? Nope. Absolutely not. Skip. Skip as far and as fast as humanly possible away from this dumpster fire.
Another thrilling addition to the "Dragons of Tirene" series! This book had me holding my breath right up to the final page. The ending is a fantastic wrap-up for an amazing couple. My only small gripe is that the POVs aren't always clear-sometimes I only figured out who was narrating halfway through a chapter. Still, the plot and storytelling pulled me in and led to an incredible finale!
I’m at a loss to understand why this book is considered a part of this series. Maybe the publisher got greedy because the series was doing so well and wanted the author to continue with the characters. All four of the other books are all told from Lark’s point of view but suddenly in this book we’re getting everyone’s point of view. The author is switching out POV’s throughout the book and chapters, some of which are labeled incorrectly. This book was clearly rushed, with spelling and grammar errors throughout, sometimes words are even missing. I’ve made it to chapter twelve and calling it quits. I’m forcing myself to read it at this point but it’s just not worth the effort. For a series that started out so strong in book one I very disappointed with how things progressed.
This book felt like a completely different series despite following the same characters. I struggled through this because it didn’t feel continuous with the previous four books.
After reading all five books, The Dragons of Tirene stands out as a compelling epic fantasy with rich world building and strong character development. Characters such as Lark and Sterling, along with memorable secondary characters like Agnor, Lessa, Bastian, and the adorable Rose, evolve in a believable and satisfying way as the stakes steadily rise throughout the series.
One of the standout elements is the relationship between Lark and Sterling, which I have enjoyed since the beginning. I loved the challenges they faced, both individually and together, and watching their relationship develop over the course of the series was a true roller coaster.
The pacing improves with each instalment, building toward the concluding book, Empire of Reckoning and Ruin, which ties together long-running threads while still delivering tension and surprises. By the end of the fifth book, the series feels complete, offering a conclusion that made my journey as a reader feel truly worthwhile.
Overall, The Dragons of Tirene is a rewarding read for fans of epic fantasy, especially those who enjoy deep lore, compelling characters, and dragons, of course. Reaching the end of the series left me both satisfied and a little reluctant to leave Tirene behind, which is always the mark of a memorable series.
A Heart-Wrenching, Hope-Filled Farewell to a Spellbinding Saga
This final book is a love song born of pain, resilience, and unwavering hope. It brings to a close a journey that has spanned betrayal and forgiveness, shattered illusions and hard-won truths, and a love that has endured even when torn apart by duty, deception, and divine interference.
Throughout the series, the characters have faced trials not only of the heart, but of fate itself—dragged into the games of meddlesome gods, forced to navigate shifting realities, and burdened with the weight of a kingdom in peril. The heroine’s rise from grief to power, from pawn to sovereign, has been nothing short of breathtaking. Her bond with dragons, her fight against the blight, and her defiance in the face of divine cruelty have shaped a legacy forged in fire.
Now, in this final instalment, everything converges. The stakes are brutal. The choices, heart-shattering. And yet, even in the darkest moments, love endures.
This book is both an ending and a promise: that healing is possible, that hope survives, and that love, when true, never fades.
A stunning, unforgettable finale to a series that has grown in scope and soul with every page. 5/5 stars.
ARC: Love that we got different POV in this book! The story starts out slow with recaps and building the story. That is also what makes these books so good though. So don’t let the first few chapters stop you from continuing!!!
Once again a thrilling action packed book with all kinds of twists and turns that keeps you guessing until the end. Some things you see coming others you do not. If you have read the first 4 books in this series this is a great conclusion. Sad it has to end. I received this book as a ARC and am extremely grateful.
This was just okay for me. I didn’t hate it, but also didn’t love it. I feel like the story shifted in the final two books and became a completely different story than what we’d been reading. The entire premise changed and it just kind of got weird. I wish we would have ended the series at book three and then book four and five could have been a different series with new characters. I liked the book but felt it just didn’t quite fit as well with the series we’d been reading. As for this book alone, I felt like some of the things were a bit rushed and some stuff wasn’t as flushed out or explained fully as it should have been. Despite those things, I did enjoy the book. I just wish there were a few things written a little bit differently.
Really struggled to get into this book compared to the others, it almost felt like an add on rather than a part of the previous series.
Some of the chapters were hard to follow as to whose POV it was. Even with names at the start of the chapter I had to go back and re-read some of them. One chapter early on was labelled as a Sterling POV but was definitely Lark?! I also struggled with the Rose POV chapters as they felt very stereotypically juvenile, rather than actually how a child of that age would talk/interact.
I was really wanting some more Sterling/Lark interaction, but their relationship and intimacy comes and goes very quickly throughout. There’s no build up and burn like before.
There was some good world building with the gods linking to previous books, and the ending does tie the series together, but sadly this felt like a bit of a slog compared to earlier books in the series.
Thank you to Nina for an e-arc of this book! I’ve been on the arc team since book 3!
We have the thrilling conclusion to this series in what should be a joyous time of Lark and Sterling finally planning their wedding! But something’s wrong…
The Gods are at war…
And the only way to stop it is a battle of Champions…to the death…
I will admit, this series has felt all over the place for me.
Book 1, I absolutely DEVOURED! I loved the academy setting and the instructor x student dynamic and the TENSION Lark and Sterling had.
Book 2, still into it, we transitioned to more court politic setting, etc.
Books 3&4 felt like that was going to be the end and the BIG fight. But there’s still parts of it I am confused on or wish we would have gotten more explanation on
Book 5 was a great book and a story almost within its own. But overall, I feel like the way we started the series and ended the series? Feels like book 1 doesn’t fit in with it all anymore. We never went back to the academy really and some of her “friends” Lark made during that time get a brief mention at the very END of book 5 or brief passings. I kept waiting for some of them to loop back in and they never did.
And the tension and connection Lark and Sterling had throughout the series was so up and down. One book, I loved them, the next, they were barely together. They did SO many of their adventures apart!
There was back to being more spice in this book 🌶️ (which, yay!)
Overall, I enjoyed the series, but books 1&2 definitely gripped me, while after that, I felt the story started to go way off the rails and too many ideas going on.
Would 100% recommend to those who love Throne of Glass, 4th Wing and Kindreds Curse.
After the epic battle in Book 4 and defeat of King Xenon and Narks destruction I honestly had no idea what Lark, Sterling and the gang were going to be up against!
It was a bit of a slow build with some flipping of perspectives, and random pieces of seemingly odd events being flung at us, and a brewing unease between nations after the loss of magic, with exception of those in Tirene but when it came together, it came together fast!
The Gods throwing their weight around (as they do in every series they feature in!!) and using mortals as pawns in their game for staying on top. Loved the twist of their need for devotion and prayer to stay Devine and how quickly Bastian worked that out, enabling the gang to devise a plan to thwart the overlords.
And to finally understand Rose’s gift, power and her familiar and ultimately saving the day. The only thing I didn’t love but I’m not knocking any stars off for it as it’s not that big a thing, but I really didn’t think it needed Roses PoV, it just felt a bit forced and surplus to the plot…?
It truly is a book of love and friendship being the most potent power there is. That without it, they wouldn’t have succeeded as they did.
Lark has certainly come a long way from the girl being hurled into Flighthaven training academy, scared of flying, unaware of her power to being the Fire Queen, dragon caller, descendent of Phoenixes and world Guardian. Bowed to by the Gods themselves.
I’m so glad that I picked this installment up! I’m going to be honest, I almost didn’t read this. After book 4, I felt the characters were in a fairly good place and couldn’t imagine that there was still more story to tell but, boy, was I wrong. In fact, I think this might have been my favorite book of the series. Lark, Sterling, and company learn that their freedom from the corruption in the previous books came at a price and all the while, new threats are emerging. This books finds our beloved characters dealing with loss, faltering magic, attacks and bizarre occurrences and warring gods and I gobbled up every word. I absolutely loved that we got more than Lark’s POV in Book 5. I felt like it added so much to the story hearing from Sterling and little Rose. Lark has survived kidnapping, war and betrayal in previous books but her character continued to grow in this one too. She had to learn to embrace her duality as both queen and warrior. Her HEA with Sterling is hard won but that makes it so much sweeter. This story was a highly entertaining blend of high stakes magic and simmering tension. It delivers an appealing world and a romance that keeps you hooked. While very good, this falls just short of 5 stars mainly due to editing and a lack of clarity at times. Still, this was an emotional and satisfying end to the series and should not be missed!
We pick up several months after the events of Book 4. Lark and Sterling/Knox are planning their wedding while also trying to figure out what is going on with magic. Reports come in from near and far that Tirene is the only kingdom with magic users left, but the elements are doing their own crazy things everywhere. When diplomacy fails, the Kingdom of Tirene does their best to fix things internally before helping the others. Finding out there is trouble between the pantheon of gods leads to a Champions battle. Will they survive, or will Lark and Sterling/Knox lose everything they've worked so hard to gain?
OK - I was REALLY hoping for resolutions to plot holes from the very beginning of the series. *Why exactly was Leesa researching Tirene while at Flighthaven? *How did Leesa's arrival in Tirene go when she was brought there from Flighthaven? *There was such a big deal made in Book 2 about Lark being the last descendent of the last Queen of Tirene (before the House of Barda took over) and why she should hide it. She was concerned about telling Sterling/Knox...and then it was never mentioned again. *There are more but my brain is not working properly to remember them right now. I'll amend this review when they come back to me.

This final installment of the DoT series is adventurous and rewarding.
We get more POVs in this book, which is perfect to understand the whole story. My favorite was from a precious little character that made my heart melt.
This installment has a steady pacing with a detailed world building and schocking discoveries. The plot keeps you invested with action and revelations along the way. This time the stakes are higher and they are nerve-wracking. All the new elements presented in the story made this book feel more cinematic and they were all perfectly weaved throughout the story.
The characters keep evolving and learning from their mistakes and connections. And others, well they are just there to create chaos. The found family Lark has built throughout the whole series is strong and trustworthy.
The end of this series presents love as the number one factor of victory and it wrapped up perfectly for Lark, Knox, their found family and their nation.
Thank you Nina Frost for the opportunity to read this whole series, it was an adventure and completely worth it!
Expect magic that crackles, romance that consumes, and a finale that will break and heal you in equal measure with Empire of Reckoning and Ruin.
Just when Lark believes she can have it all: love and a kingdom to rule, nothing is as it seems. She’ll be forced to question everything she’s ever known as revelations shake the foundations of herself, her realm, and even the gods.
With her love, Sterling, and the friends who’ve become her found family, Lark embarks on a deadly game of chess with the gods to prove where true loyalty lies.
But the very thing that threatens to tear the kingdom apart may also be the one thing that can save it in the end.
When checkmate is declared, it won’t be power or prophecy that wins, it’ll be the strength of her heart and the love she shares with Sterling.
I’ve adored Sterling and Lark’s chemistry since the very beginning. It’s been endearing to see how their relationship has developed throughout the series. Sterling treats Lark like the Queen she is, unless she asks him not to of course 😏
“I’m the one who doesn’t deserve you. But I’m going to spend the rest of my life striving to be worthy of your love. Worshipping you. Showing you just how perfect every inch of you really is.”
The plot was full of twists and turns. The sense of camaraderie between the characters was great to follow. Rose is a little minx! An ending to end all endings, which was a delight to read.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this series and I highly recommend. Full of all things Romantasy which I adore!!
This series has been such a fun ride, and I’m genuinely sad to see it end. I joined Nina’s ARC team starting with book four, and from there I was hooked—book one immediately captured my attention. Honestly, I thought book four wrapped everything up nicely, but surprise! We were gifted with another book.
Lark and Sterling’s relationship has been through so much, and just when it seems like we’ll finally get a wedding and smooth sailing after all their trials… chaos strikes again. A war between the gods threatens everything. Now, Lark and Sterling not only have their kingdom to protect but must also fight to save the rest of the realm.
This finale is filled with unique magic, spice, betrayal, and of course—dragons. The Dragon of Tirene series is one you’ll definitely want to add to your TBR!
So fun to be back in the world of Lark and Sterling for the final installment of the Dragons of Tirene series! These characters grew and stretched even more than they did in book four...and my admiration for them grew right along with it. I LOVE the found family they’ve built, and their banter has been one of my favorite parts of the entire series. Getting a new POV this time was such a fun surprise, too! Nina Frost gave us an epic mix of chaos, fear, strength, bravery, tender moments, hope, and so much love. What a perfect finale!
🔥 Gods at War 🔥 Lost powers & Feuding Kingdoms 🔥 Chaos of Epic Proportions 🔥 Right vs Wrong 🔥 Protection & Love of friends and family 🔥 Romance, Deep Connection + Spice
Empire of Reckoning and Ruin is the 5th and final book in the Dragons of Tirene series by Nina Frost. Let me just start off by saying this has been an incredible series! Nina Frost takes us on the wildest adventures and the love story is the deep love we all dream of along with fabulous spice! Every book in this series is action packed and will keep you up late in the night. This final book is no different. I don’t want to give anything away because seriously, if you love dragons, snarky/stabby fmc, gods, & magic, you need to read these! The entire series is now complete and available to buy or get on KU!
Wow, this last book in the series is awesome. It’s action-packed, thrilling, romantic and quite the page turner. I love the unique characters’ (especially Rose’s) strength, bravery, friendship, determination, and love. The odds of survival, in this unavoidable final battle, doesn’t look good, but would you rather die knowing you gave it your all or surrender? This story is quite the roller coaster! It’s action-packed and filled with danger, dragons, Devoted, Champions Match, phoenix fire, gods, covenant, despair, magic, family, suspense, strategy, love, Tirene, war, friends, willpower, divine creatures, survival, destiny, Time, wit, battle and twists and turns!
Wow. Just wow! Literally waited until release day finish the book. I didn’t want to put it down. I actually refuse to read it until the last possible moment, which was release day. I didn’t want this series to end. What a wonderful ending to a story that captured my heart.
I hope there is a story or novella of Rose. She was such a beautiful character to add in this last book. Don’t get me wrong she appears in the fourth book but she added so much more in this final book. I really enjoyed her mischief and her courage throughout the book. For me it was the perfect extra something that made me love this final book more.
After finishing book 4 Queen of Legends and Lies I thought that the story was over it felt like the perfect end to the story, minus the wedding of Lark and Knox. This book starts out feeling like it doesn't belong in the big story but I am glad that I finished it. The growth and development of not only Knox and Lark but the rest of their circle ties everything together for the perfect ending.
Being able to see them finally get married and everyone become a family was really missing from the story. I don't want to give too much away but definitely read this book even though you're not sure it fits. It does.
I really wanted to love this book, I really wanted it to be all consuming and one that I couldn't put down. Instead, it was a slog. I can't really describe it otherwise - first the chapters were a bit confusing at first, since you aren't sure who's POV it is until there is some interaction with someone else and then you're like - right - go back, re-read and continue. Then - Lark and Sterling.. I just couldn't get into them. No slow burn, very one dimensional - especially on Sterling. They just didn't make me ache to turn the page and not miss a moment. For those that love the series, I'd still read it, but don't make the mistake of making the pedestal too tall.
It took me almost 2 months to get through the first half of this book. It was so hard to read, so boring and unengaging. I really enjoyed the first 2 books in this series and it seemed to just go downhill from there with each book getting worse. I like to finish things, so I wanted to just get through this one to see how the series ended. It was worse than I expected. Yes, it had a happy ending, but it was confusing as heck on how we got there. Things really didn't make sense or had side tangents that were never explained. I love the dragons and Lark's character, but man. This one was rough.
Oh myyyy!!! I was so fortunate to receive an ARC & couldn’t wait to dive into the final book and adventures in Tirene series!! Make sure to read in order as the journey will not disappoint. Sterling and Lark finally get to plan their wedding, but it’s never that simple. Are the gods mad? What’s happening to their powers? Your stomach will dip and you won’t want to stop turning pages. This book had me showing a full range of emotions. Nina Frost does an amazing job of recapping in the series too, as a refresher.
What a startling discovery of twist and turns that are lethal for everyone and the kingdoms. So much is happening in here I can’t even imagine where to start . Lark ,Sterling and their group have a lot of dangerous obstacles to overcome if that’s even possible to get through what faces them now. I’m truly hoping Nina Frost continues this perhaps with Rose and her Flame I think there’s something there we need to discover. This series is a must read
