One came to forget. One came to escape. Neither expected to fall.
If I Had a Wish is a tender, opposites-attract sapphic romance about grief, second chances, and unexpected sparks under the stars.
Vivian Enright, a world-renowned but notoriously aloof astronomer, has spent her career chasing galaxies and avoiding emotional entanglements. Burned out and restless, she agrees to help a colleague/friend at the remote McDonald Observatory, expecting nothing more than a change of scenery.
Franny Ricci is searching for purpose after the sudden loss of her wife. A new role running operations at the observatory seems like a fresh start. That is, until Vivian storms in with arrogance and sharp edges, threatening the calm Franny has begun to rebuild.
But when a situation arises, and Vivian unexpectedly steps in to help, Franny glimpses the sorrow behind the professor’s polished façade. What begins as mutual disdain slowly shifts into something deeper, something neither woman saw coming.
Set against the vast Texas sky, If I Had a Wish explores the fragile beauty of connection, the courage it takes to love again, and the hope that sometimes, even stars need a little help to shine.
Jamey Moody is a small town Texas girl living her best life with her little terrier Leo, who brings her a toy every time she walks in the house. When she’s not reading or writing her next sapphic romance you can find her on a bike ride, paddle boarding the lake, or in the middle of an adventure. Reach out, she’d love to hear from you.
"A beautifully crafted love story full of hope, heart, and undeniable chemistry!"
Jamey has done it again—creating such a touching and heartfelt love story that shows love can find you more than once in a lifetime, and that sometimes all it takes is a wish and a little belief for dreams to come true.
I absolutely loved the connection between Vivian and Francesca. The way their friendship slowly blossomed into a beautiful relationship was so well crafted, I found it hard to put this book down. Their bond felt real, their attraction was undeniable, and their chemistry kept me captivated the whole way through.
One of the things I adore about Jamey’s writing is how she keeps all her characters connected throughout the series. I loved seeing the continued growth of the established relationships while being introduced to this new, heartfelt love story.
I highly recommend this book—as well as all of Jamey’s works! If you haven’t already, start with Book One in the Wishing Stars series, Wish Upon a Rainbow Star, to fall in love with Celeste and Esse’s story before diving into this one. You won’t regret it!
Star rating. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice rating. 🔥🔥🔥
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
I absolutely loved this book. Jamey Moody is the queen of all series. I am always looking at the stars after reading. the story of Francesca and Vivian is full of heart and love. I can't wait until the next one comes out.
This is such a sweet heartwarming story. 1st book was my favorite this one came in second. Now I am anticipating the fourth boom. This series is a must-read.
Vivian is an ice queen, but only really on the outside. Inside she has pushed her occasional romantic attractions down and ended any budding relationships, sometimes hurting others in the process. This was started many years before to protect herself and her budding career - but once started, years later now she doesn’t know how to get close to anyone. Now as one of the best astronomers in the world, she is looking forward to an easy time helping Hedy with her new program. Franny is an organised woman. She is the new manager of the McDonald Observatory, running the office and visitors center, and helping organise the new graduate program that Hedy, her friend and former colleague, is starting. She is currently living in her RV, on the campground in the state park nearby. After the death of her wife a few years previously, she is definitely not looking for any relationship. Jamey Moody comes up with the most descriptive ideas about hearts. In each book she seems to outdo herself - in this, Vivian and Franny’s hearts are ‘smiling’ - such beautiful and evocative use of language. There is grief and profound loss in this story, but handled in such a sympathetic way which shows a deep understanding of how different people internally handle their grief, by living it, by hiding or burying it, or in some cases by celebrating it. The section where we hear of Vivian’s mother and her words to her daughter are some of the most beautiful in the book, though tinged with a bit of sadness. Another wondrously charming story, balanced between spicy and romantic, with a side serving of grief.
Jamey Moody has a way of making your heart sing with every book she writes. She also makes you wish you could find love like the ones she writes about, all the wishes of the MCs, and how they make it happen. Vivian and Franny are the main characters in this book. How they meet at the observatory is something you’ll have to pick up the book to find out!
Vivian is there to help Hedy start up a new teaching program. She’s a little shy about coming back to help Hedy because she feels she hasn’t been a good friend over the years. The book continues with all the characters from the first two books. Esse is the only one who isn’t a scientist and astronomer but fits in very well. The curriculum is being up with Vivian’s help, and Hedy is surprised at how much Vivian has changed since they taught together at Berkly.
Now, Franny is a force to be reckoned with but as time goes by, you see the deep heart she has and is always ready to help. In fact, she is very knowledgeable at getting people to talk about themselves. She comes to several realizations that surprise her. Will she act on them?
This book has a speedy beginning, and is my favorite of the series so far.
Two broken souls heal together and form a bond neither one of them expected.
A favorite quote: "It’s hard to explain. Maybe our hearts felt this all along. They’ve been shooting these feelings out until ours collided and formed this dust cloud of love."
A special thank you to Jamey Moody for this wonderful ARC opportunity! I’m thrilled to leave my honest review.
The first thing that came to mind when I received this book was “Yay, a new Jamey Moody book!” And this book definitely supported that sentiment! If I Had A Wish is the third installment of the wish series and it was every bit as good as the first two. I must take a moment to appreciate the absolutely beautiful book covers of all three books in the series. The starscapes are magnificent and the artistry is striking. The cover of this last book grabbed my attention immediately and the content kept me hooked until the very last page.
Jamey Moody has a knack for creating characters that I grow to care about and have a hard time forgetting. Our main characters in this book were no different and I will, without a doubt, remember them fondly…until I read this book again that is! With the mystical and beautiful starry night skies as our formidable backdrop, we meet Vivian and Franny and follow their sweet story. Vivian is a world renowned astronomer who accepts a position at the McDonald observatory in Texas to both help out a friend and have a change of scenery for a while. She appears to have an ego the size of the very state they are working in but I see past it. She is a brilliant and accomplished astronomer. She has worked hard to become amongst the best in her field and at the cost of any real or lasting romantic relationships. She hides behind her success and is content to remain in a self constructed emotional fortress. That is until she meets Franny, the one person able to break down those carefully constructed walls.
Franny is a wonderfully kind, compassionate and complex woman. She lost her wife some years back and has struggled to move beyond her passing. It is clear that Moody has experienced grief because she creates characters that are grief stricken and deal with it in truly realistic ways. Having lost some of the very most important people in my life, I am all too acquainted with grief. You can always tell when authors who write characters dealing with loss have had the misfortune of experiencing it themselves because grief is such a unique experience that can only be adequately illustrated by a member of the club, so to speak. Grief is tricky because it never really ends. Time does not really heal anything…you just get used to a new reality and are forced to accept it everyday. Finding any semblance of peace or healing is quite difficult and cannot be rushed. Franny is working to live a life without her wife and doing her best to find her peace and healing.
Both Franny and Vivian are confident that love will not find them again in their lives and live in a sort of quiet contentment. But alas, their love has already been written in the stars. They meet and at first the ride is certainly quite bumpy. It is doubtful they can be colleagues or even friends but their chemistry is really something else. Their walls are broken down, brick by brick. What develops is a really beautiful connection. Moody’s writing is deep, meaningful and touching. She creates worlds I want to live in and characters I want to love. Vivian and Franny’s journey is believable and their love grows organically. They are at once each other's second chance and first choice. Their intimate scenes were deliciously hot while being beautifully raw. I thoroughly enjoy a good spicy scene (or five lol) and these were written to perfection. Spice that helps me to really believe that these two incredible women have found real love together. I loved it! This was a remarkable story and one I will certainly read again. I loved the aspect of this being part of the series because we get to revisit Heddy, Taryn, Celeste and Esse again…and they are also incredible women! You don’t have to read the earlier books in this series to enjoy this as it can certainly be enjoyed on its own. But I would absolutely recommend books one and two for any lover of sapphic romance. This book was a wonderful take on second chance romance with hints of enemies to lovers and a melting ice queen as well. However, at its core this book is really about navigating the minefield of loss and surviving the quicksand of grief. It is about life and love. I loved it! A truly lovely wlw romance that will have you believing in the power of love and appreciating the wonderment and beauty of the stars above.
Jamey Moody’s If I Had a Wish transcends the typical romance novel, delivering a deeply resonant and emotionally satisfying reading experience. The book takes a classic romance trope—the “ice queen”—and elevates it into a poignant exploration of healing, second chances, and the profound beauty of human connection. Its appeal lies in its ability to provide a compelling, low-angst escape that centers on the internal emotional journey rather than dramatic external conflict.
At the heart of the novel is the opposites-attract dynamic between Vivian Enright and Franny Ricci. On the surface, they couldn’t be more different: Vivian is aloof, icy, and direct, while Franny is searching for purpose after a devastating loss. Yet Moody skillfully peels back Vivian’s layers to reveal the sorrow and vulnerability beneath her sharp exterior, while grounding the story in Franny’s quest for renewal. Both women are deeply relatable, with a richness and authenticity that draw readers into their shared journey of rediscovery and love.
Moody resists relying on high-stakes external drama to forge the romance. Instead, she allows conflict and tension to emerge organically from her characters’ inner struggles. Like her other novels, this story thrives on sparks of connection and the slow, tender process of two people learning to truly see each other. Their eventual happy ending offers contentment and joy, reminding readers that life’s twists—grief, second chances, career changes—don’t need to feel contrived to carry emotional weight. Moody integrates these real-life challenges with authenticity, ensuring that the resolution feels earned. Her gentler approach may deviate from standard romance formulas, but it’s precisely what makes her stories so appealing. Many readers welcome the reprieve from high-stress emotional drama, and Moody’s books provide exactly that refuge.
That’s not to say Moody skimps on craft. On the contrary, her use of setting in this novel is remarkable. The remote McDonald Observatory, framed by the vast Texas sky, becomes more than just a backdrop; it serves as a metaphor. The “endless expanse” and “dark skies” mirror the emotional distance between Vivian and Franny at the beginning, while also symbolizing the infinite possibilities their connection promises. The cosmos reflects both the vast unknown that must be embraced and the haunting emptiness that can follow if it’s ignored. The stars, distant yet full of promise, evolve into a beacon of hope—reminding both characters and readers that light always exists, even if it takes effort to bring into focus. Ultimately, the setting reinforces the novel’s central message: life is fragile and ever-changing, but beauty and hope are always within reach for those willing to look up.
Final remarks…
If I Had a Wish succeeds because it delivers exactly what readers long for: a compelling story infused with emotional depth, believable chemistry, and relatable women over forty. It captures the courage of second chances, the quiet hope of new beginnings, and the enduring power of human connection at any age. Most of all, it reminds us that even in the darkest of nights, there is always a light waiting to break through the clouds and shine.
Jamey Moody’s If I Had a Wish is a beautifully written sapphic romance that captures the heart with its emotional depth, compelling characters, and breathtaking setting. As the third installment in The Wishing Star Series, this novel continues Moody’s tradition of crafting stories that are both tender and transformative.
Set against the vast and starry skies of the McDonald Observatory in Texas, the story follows Vivian Enright, a brilliant but emotionally guarded astronomer, and Franny Ricci, a woman rebuilding her life after profound loss. Their initial clash is electric, but Moody masterfully guides their journey from tension to trust, weaving a narrative rich in vulnerability, healing, and unexpected connection 1.
What makes this book truly shine is Moody’s ability to balance poignant themes—grief, second chances, and the courage to love again—with moments of humor and warmth. Her prose is lyrical yet grounded, and the chemistry between Vivian and Franny is both believable and deeply moving. The observatory setting adds a magical, almost ethereal backdrop that enhances the emotional resonance of the story 1.
Moody’s characters are refreshingly real, with flaws and fears that make their growth feel earned. Readers will find themselves rooting for them not just as a couple, but as individuals learning to navigate life’s complexities. The romance is slow-burning but satisfying, and the payoff is worth every page.
Whether you're a longtime fan of sapphic fiction or new to the genre, If I Had a Wish is a must-read. It’s a story that reminds us that even in the darkest nights, love can be the brightest star of all.
In the third book of her Wishing Stars series, Jamey Moody again takes readers to the mountains of western Texas. In If I Had a Wish, elite astronomer Dr. Vivian Enright is visiting the McDonald Observatory, ostensibly to assist colleague/friend Dr. Hedy Marshall and former student/now colleague Dr. Celeste Starr in launching a new program.
Vivian, however, has undisclosed personal reasons for the trip and delegating her duties as the head of the UC Berkeley astronomy program to her graduate students for the summer.
In Book 1 and 2, Celeste and Hedy, respectively, discovered her twin star. Despite all the love orbiting Vivian at the observatory, her history of spurning all romantic attachments makes it doubtful she’ll likewise find her soulmate.
But Vivian’s ill-, or, perhaps, well-timed tailgating up the mountain immediately puts her in the path of observatory Operations Administrator Franny Ricci.
Franny has found the new post and living in an RV at the state park restorative in dealing with the grief of her wife’s death five years ago. So, Franny’s not going to let the arrogant astronomer disrupt the positive changes she’s making personally and in the observatory’s processes and procedures.
But, surprisingly, Franny finds Vivian to be her Good Samaritan and learns she may have more in common with the visiting academic than she could have imagined.
If I Had a Wish is my favorite among the three books in the series. Moody effectively writes how the two women move through their mutual wariness and scorn to arrive at their HEA. Reading about how Vivian and Franny learn to live joyfully gives the book a starring place on my bookshelf.
This is the 3rd installment in the Wishing Stars series by Moody and it does not disappoint. The familiar characters from the previous books are helping the current MCs navigate their way toward each other and the stars literally show them the way. One MC is arrogant (but rightfully so) and the other is not having it (but secretly loving it). The set-up of the observatory, the state park, the small town, and of course the vast and endless Texas sky, culminate in a beautiful landscape that tempts our MCs to take on an adventure they never saw coming. I loved the older age representation. 1 MC is in her mid-50s and the other is in her late 40s. There aren't enough couples of these ages in sapphic romance books. When we do get an older woman, it is almost always an age gap story. To have both MCs well over 40 is uncommon and very much appreciated. Thank you Jamey :) Both MCs are smart, accomplished, and know their worth. Both have reasons to wallow in grief and avoid new relationships, but they choose to open their hearts and give the world another chance. It does help that all around them people fall in love and spread the romance. The Moody charm is working here big time as friendliness replaces the initial indignant attitude, walls are lowered quickly, and the aloof arrogant woman falls for someone who isn't even a scientist (gasp). Some spicy scenes take place in later stages, showing that age is not gonna hinder women on their way to having a good time ;) loved that! The teaser in the end has me waiting eagerly for the next book in the series.
Rating: 4 stars Discalimer: I received an ARC and am leaving a review voluntarily.
I believe “The Wishing Stars Series” is the best example of how far Jamey has come in her writing and storytelling. She has taken a childhood wish upon a star and has expanded it into a sweet and romantic series. The series included wonderful connections, cool tunes and The McDonald Observatory right in her own backyard. This story brought Vivian Enright back, who I loved in this series. The prickly, arrogant head of the astronomy department at UC Berkeley has come back to the McDonald Observatory to help Hedy. But as she was going up to the observatory, she tries to pass a slow moving vehicle also going up. Francesca Ricci can not believe some irresponsible person is trying to speed on the mountain and is flashing and honking but Francesca was not going to risk her life to let a crazy get by. As they get to the top and park, Francesca can’t wait to give this person her wrath. Oh Boy. The stars are going to have to work real hard for these two. Everyone is back. In classic Jamey Moody style, we get to see two women who are trying to deal with life’s nuances. That Starlight wish is back. With this book we get to feel good. I loved that Vivian and the RV life were going to become one. I loved that aspect of Francesca’s story.(Been thinking about it myself) This to me turned out to be the best series so far. Great job Jamey💕
I loved this book! If I Had a Wish is everything I want in an opposites-attract sapphic romance—tender, emotional, and filled with sparks that burn brighter than the Texas night sky.
Franny was an absolute standout for me. Sweet, calm, and quietly strong, she doesn’t take nonsense from anyone—not even the brilliant, intimidating Vivian. She’s not afraid to hold her ground, and I loved that she didn’t just “soften” Vivian. Instead, she blasted through those walls with honesty, persistence, and her own brand of steady strength. Franny doesn’t melt Vivian’s ice—she dynamites it out of the way, and it’s glorious to watch.
Vivian, meanwhile, is not your typical Ice Queen, and that’s what makes her so refreshing. A lot of Ice Queen characters are shaped by familiar backstories—heartbreak, betrayal, trauma, or the pressure of succeeding in a male-dominated field. But Vivian’s reason for being who she is? Completely different, and completely brilliant. It feels fresh, and uniquely her—something I don’t think anyone but Jamey Moody could have pulled off.
Together, Franny and Vivian’s journey is beautifully written, a slow unraveling of grief, guarded hearts, and the possibility of love when you least expect it. This story is tender, heartfelt, and unforgettable—exactly the kind of romance that lingers long after you turn the last page.
"If I Had a Wish" is Book 3 of the "Wishing Stars" Series by Jamey Moody. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and "If I Had a Wish" is no exception. Dr Vivien Enright and Francesa Ricci re the two main characters. Vivien, a little older, is a world famous Astronomer. She has come to help her long time friend Hedy Marshall, the superintendent at the McDonald Observatory in the David Mountains in Texas, introduce a new programme. It is here in the Davis Mountains where the story has its setting. Francesa works at the Observatory and they meet in unusual circumstances; it is interesting and sets them up for some action as they initially butt heads, before settling down into their story. As an author, Jamey spends time developing her characters and I find this really good for the realism in her books. These characters seem like real people and I want to get to know them better. Another good thing about a series is that there is more time for the characters to develop. It's like meeting up with old friends as they've been in some of the other books as well. My favourite character is Vivien, who has to learn a few life lessons along the way; however, I loved the interactions between all the characters. Well done Jamey.Thank you.
If I Had a Wish is book 3 of The Wishing Star series. The MCs of this story are Dr. Vivian Enright, a brilliant astronomer and head of the astronomy department at UC Berkley and Francesca Ricci who runs the day to day operations at the McDonald Observatory. Vivian is there to help her friend Hedy, the head of the observatory, start up a new program for the fall semester and Franny is new there for a fresh start after the loss of her wife.
Their initial meeting is far from conventional, but as time goes on, the two start developing feelings that neither one expected. Follow their journey with Hedy and Taryn, Celeste and Esse and the entire cast from the series and find yourself immersed in a beautiful love story written in the stars!
Jamey Moody has once again brought us to the Davis Mountains in Texas and the universe above. Jamey’s descriptions of the surrounding areas and the constellations make you want to go there and see them for yourself! This series is a must read whether you’re new to Jamey’s books or a long time follower.
I received an ARC of this story in return for an honest review. Honestly, I love this book and this series.
Once again Jamey Moody writes a very tender love story between Vivian, the proud and brilliant astronomy professor and Franny, the new operations manager of the observatory, who is finally rebuilding her life after the loss of her wife. After their momentous meeting, never would I picture these two people together, but throughout this book, author Jamey pens a very believable and authentic transition to friendship and beyond.
I really loved both characters. The support they provided one another was warm, genuine and relatable for the reader. The writing was full of sensitivity, humor, chemistry and Jamey's "love language!". I also enjoyed all the interactions with the characters from the first two books and the sneak peek into the next and final book. This is a truly wonderful series filled with so much love that the reader has to feel better after reading it. I highly recommend!
I read this as an early release free read. I am so impressed with the quality of writing in this book. Jamey Moody is an exceptional writer, simply expressing things I would quite probably miss by other skilled writers. Her series has been light hearted yet poignant and this is no exception. We met the main characters in previous stories and brining these two together in the beginning puzzled me. They are so very different, yet it is those differences that manage to bring them together and tie them there. The setting of the observatory keeps the reader in an honest desire for them to move forward. The story develops quickly and deeply. The resolution is anticipated yet better than I imagined. Now I can’t wait until the next in the series is released.
Another lovely book in The Wishing Stars Series, sees ice queen professor Vivian stand off against Hedy’s most trusted employee Franny. You do not need to have read the previous 2 books in the series, but I would recommend them. The writing by Ms Moody is spot on, she just is able to capture in words the feeling and undercurrents of attraction. Vivian feels that love has passed her by, she has sacrificed her career for love. Then her mother dies and on her death bed says to Vivian that she will find love. She goes to help out her friend and colleague, Hedy at her observatory and there she meets Franny. Franny is still grieving the loss her wife and is reluctant to get involved with anyone. I really enjoyed this book, there is minimal aghast and just a lovely read.
This is the third book in the Wishing Star series and is my absolute favorite of the three. Franny and Vivian are both living with different forms of grief. Their chance encounter was just what they each needed to make fresh starts later in life. Franny's grief living with the loss of her wife and Vivian's lack of love due to career ambitions are presented realistically. The progression of their relationship as friends helping one another see what the future could be was gradual and true to life. If you're a fan of second chance, opposites attract romances, this might be for you. This could be read as a standalone, but if you'd like to read the story of the other two couples mentioned in this book, check out the first two books of this series.
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Astronomer Vivian Enright has come out to Davis Mt to help Hedy set up a new graduate program. Her first day is spoiled a bit by a super slow driver going up to the observatory.
Francesca Ricci is the recently recruited manager of the observatory, and is less than thrilled by Vivian tailgating her up the mountain. They have a argument in the parking lot, then she headed in. Not long after Hedy introduces her to the new astronomer... and it's argument lady. Oops.
Both promise Hedy they'll get along, and do so, other than some bumps. When Franny's car breaks down on the way home, Vivian stops to help her, and they talk....
Good romance, but there's no conflict in the story, and it could have used that. Its not boring, exactly, but...
This book is so sweet. If you’ve read Moody’s books before you know what to expect, great characters, beautiful locations and a love story that will have you swooning. I can’t say I was Vivian’s biggest fan in previous books, but I instantly loved her in this one. The icy exterior seemed to have melted a little and by the end she was a completely different person. Franny is the perfect love interest, she’s gone through bad times and doesn’t think she will ever find love again. I am thoroughly enjoying this trip amongst the stars and excited for the next book.
When Vivian’s mother passes away she is given permission to find love where she avoided it at all costs before. She wants to be a better friend and also figure out if she can find love. Franny lost her wife five years prior and was ready for a new beginning which Hedy provided in the new graduate program she created. A great love story of two women who didn’t think they would find it at all, or deserved to find it a second time.
This is the 3rd in Jamey's Wishing on Stars series. And it is best one yet. Professor Vivian comes to help Hedy with a project. She is the ice queen with a new conquest every semester. Right at the start she runs into Franny, the new office manager. Sparks fly, but not in the best way. But the stars have a way of working things out in a good way. Please give this awesome book a read. You will not be disappointed.
Two hearts both grieving come together and form a special bond. One heart learns to love for the first time and the other learns that it can love again. I found the story very moving and a lot of fun as well. Franny and Vivian share an amazing connection as friends with the hope of more. I love that the characters are more mature and are still very passionate. I truly loved this story.
A fantastic ending to the Wishing Star series. Stuck up professor Vivian meets her match in feisty Franny. From their first angry exchange in the observatory car park l really enjoyed the way their relationship grew. A low angst highly enjoyable story about 2 slightly older women embracing a new start.
In addition to an incredible love story, and an amusing ‘meet cute’ this was an inspiring tale where I learned more about astronomy than I never knew I didn’t know(!)
Phenomenal characters, so realistic to their community and the scientific environs. One who never loved and one who loved tragically.
If I had a wish was such a breathtaking tender , sweet romance. I was overflowed with the warmth of the love I could feel developing between Vivian and Franny. A touching love story
Another wonderful story of the hand of writer Jamey Moody. Quirky characters, wonderful scenery, and the main characters 2 beautiful women you love from the start. I wish I could see that sky with all his stars:)
Wow another swooning story I loved the main characters their connection was embedded beautifully throughout the story i loved how it unfolded making it impossible to put down definitely must read congratulations
