Love the Rogues. This gives us a look at who they are in this universe and why they ended up on Thawne's project.
The whole group (minus Grodd) was evidently part of a military team that did something that got them dishonorably discharged and blacklisted, but we don't know what yet. Though none of them really seem to be evil, so this is still in line with the Rogues we've come to know in the main Flash universe. I guess we'll eventually find out what they did.
Wally's dad is the one who went around recruiting them for this blacksite project, but by the end of this issue, you can see he has doubts about what the hell he's gotten himself into. Is it too late for him? A nice little cliffhanger ending leaves that question...well, hanging.
A really good issue, giving us a lot deeper look into the rogues. They're very different than the regular Flash Rogues, but I kind of love them here? Great issue.
The interlude we have been waiting for! The spotlight on the rogues and a bit more information on their backgrounds. Of course ab issue going over the rogues can’t start any other way than Digger getting into a bar fight! But as he was thrown out into the dirt he looked up to see a familiar face…Colonel West. As it turns out, all of the rogues were dishonorable members of a military unit that took a bribe from a foreign government while in Syria, and it all went terribly wrong. That is also where it is implied that Lisa Snart lost her legs. YEP, I called that big time with all the mean comments Jesse was making to Lisa in the previous issues about her tech. One by one we see as West goes across the country to pull in the rogues and recruit them for a new project. All along the way trying to call back to Wally…and getting nothing.
I say one by one but it was over relatively quickly. After picking up Digger his next stop was Kansas on the Snart ranch where Lisa and her brother Leonard were living. Soon after that Jesse actually came to them. Turns out they put tracking devices within each of the team members out of the paranoia the army will come back after them. So why they decided to turn up themselves is beyond me lol, but that’s gave West the opportunity to give the sails pitch. They want them back for an extremely dangerous mission that will be so secret that of they die no one will know…and if they live…that’s where the real fun begins.
And that’s when the rogues first got into Fort Fox and met the leads behind project Olympus: Dr Barry Allen and Dr Elenore Thawne. There he introduces them to their goal: use cutting edge advancements to push the very limits of human potential. We get Quick Look’s at mirror master, Grodd, and even someone in a chamber they claim is being used to cure and detect any disease or defect at a molecular level. Wonder what that actually is. But Leonard interjects, he knows that this is really about…weapons. Barry corrects him, it’s about making them into the weapons. That’s when the rogues get introduced to their new toys. Boomer to the boomerangs he won’t just be flying…but be apart of. Lisa to her new legs already fitted. But Jesse is skeptical, this tech is like nothing they’ve seen…where did it come from. Suddenly Barry has a flashback to the Mojave desert in 1944 where a machine, much like the one we see Barry lost in later, is working but starts to go off the rails. Suddenly we see a man referred to as Garrick (JAY?!) run to try and stop it, while his partner Thawne (a male version, possible relative to the current Thawne?) tried to stop him. But Garrick ended up getting too close and sucked into the machine! I think that means Jay is part of the speed force, and that gives a lot of hope for Barry. But as we cut back to the past, all Barry can say in response to Jesse’s question is that it’s classified. But either way the rogues don’t have a choice, they can either become gods…or go to prison for the rest of their lives as the traitors they are.
As we end this issue we jump back to the present day where we left off with Colonel West finding the alien ships in the secret fort Fox bunker. He does what he always does when he is worried…he calls Wally. He knows Wally won’t hear this, but he apologizes and just wants to let him know that what happened with his mother was in no way his fault. And that she loved him…and so does he…suddenly Wally responds on the other end of the phone. Wally starts to say that something is wrong and something happened…only for a bag to be pulled around West’s face as he is arrested. Standing before him is Thawne as she drives her cane into the phone cutting off the connection to Wally.

I’m probably being unfair because for an issue that delves into the other characters in the world of Absolute Flash it IS good and well thought out. My problem is I just didn’t care. I’d say the lower rating for this issue is a lot more personal than pragmatic, I’m just a lot more interested in where everything’s going than where it’s come from at this point in time.
We get a really engaging interlude here where we learn more about the Rogues. Lemire does a really good job giving insight for many characters in this one. That cliffhanger was great as well and has me stoked for the next issue.
This issue of Absolute Flash is definitely the best so far. Great insight into some of the main characters. The artwork was great, and the writer did a great job balancing the past, present and future.
I really like this little interlude that shows us a bit more of this version of the Rogues, in addition to some more glimpses at Barry and Thane, and even the introduction of Jay Garrick. It's the first issue in this series to not feel light on content.
Project Olympus and its employees become a point of interest and Colonel West realizes too late that maybe he is not on the must-see team. The Rogues get more context here, something that the Absolute Universe is committing through all its issues!
