I never thought I would fall in love with my grumpy next door neighbor.
I came to Seaside Falls for two peace and maybe a little inspiration. I didn’t expect Luke Bradshaw—my grumpy, ridiculously handsome firefighter neighbor. We got off on the wrong foot. He’s silence and shadows. I’m sass and sunshine. Total opposites. But thanks to our meddling families, we’re stuck restoring the town’s crumbling lighthouse together. I thought I had Luke figured out—quiet, emotionally unavailable, completely closed off. Then he starts showing up in unexpected ways… fixing things, noticing the little stuff, protecting me. And one night, he tells me he’s falling for me. Just as I’m about to say I’m falling for him too—my phone rings. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime. My dream job. Even though I never anticipated Luke coming into my life… I don’t know if it’s worth giving up everything I’ve worked so hard for.
The Grumpiest Fireman Next Door: An Enemy to Lovers Small-Town Romance by Maggie Blume is a sweet, breezy story about opposites learning to trust each other when Emilia, seeking peace and inspiration in tiny Seaside Falls, finds herself thrown together with her grumpy, quietly tender firefighter neighbor Luke Bradshaw as they work on restoring the town’s old lighthouse and grapple with growing feelings against the backdrop of small-town life.
What struck me most about this novella was how surprisingly warm every character felt, even when the plot moves at lightning speed due to the book’s shorter length. Emilia’s optimistic, bright personality made me smile from the first scene, and Luke’s guarded exterior had me rooting for him long before his softer side unfolded. The dynamic between them felt grounded and real, from their accidental first encounters to the little moments where Luke shows up in ways you did not expect, quietly noticing the details that matter.
The Seaside Falls setting gave everything a cozy, comforting feel, and the lighthouse project was a lovely metaphor for two people rebuilding not just a town landmark but their own ideas about love and belonging. Fans of light romances with heartfelt emotion and gentle tension will likely enjoy this, though the quick pace left me wanting just a little more depth in some moments.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars. I am giving it four stars because it charmed me with its characters and genuine emotional beats, keeping me smiling long after I finished, but the brevity means some parts could feel a little underdeveloped for readers who love fully fleshed out romances.
Emilia has a car accident before arriving at Seaside Falls. Strong Fireman Luke Bradshaw is on duty and arrives to help her. The banter starts there. She later meets him in the vegetable section at the local grocery. Of course Emilia ends up sitting next to him at the chili dinner at the Grange Hall. She eventually reveals to Luke that she left Manhattan because her job had lost its meaning. Luke wants to fix the lighthouse and Emilia agrees to help him. They are at the lighthouse when an upper railing falls into the water. They fix the railing and continue work on the lighthouse. Then Emilia gets a huge job offer. She asks Luke for time to decide to take the job or stay so they can "see where this goes." At the lantern launch where you write your secret wish on your lantern, Luke sees her write "Let this be home."You can't help hoping that they can find the happiness that they both need.
I so enjoyed reading this story. It opens with an emergency forced first meeting. Both are guarded, cautious and very observant. And those features describe most of the interactions and conversations between these two. It includes a place for military personnel to recover and establish a life after military duty is completed. If you like a slow burn that includes misunderstandings, this is for you. A favorite quote: “The particular quiet of a life that used to feel complete. And don’t anymore. I’d give it more stars
This is a great story of two lost souls. Emilia running from a broken engagement and Luke close off from an accident and losing the woman who left. Emilia bursts right into Luke’s life by almost hitting the fire truck and then in the grocery store parking lot when she notices that his bag of groceries is going to burst. Then Luke’s package is dropped off on Emilia’s porch. Of course Luke’s mother starts right in on him by inviting Emilia to a dinner in town and of course saves a seat for him right aside Amelia. They get thrown together by the town on a project to fix the lighthouse. By this time they have gotten feelings for each other. Amelia gets an offer of her life and she has to decide if she is going to stay or go back to the city. She finally decides and I love the happy ending of this story. I received a free copy of this book. I am leaving this review of my own free will. I would recommend this book to everyone. It is well written.
This book was short and sweet! The meet-cute between Emilia and Luke was far from sweet but it was memorable!! These two were the epitome of Grumpy/Sunshine! This book moved very quickly because of its length but was filled with heartfelt emotion. It would be very easy to turn it into a full length book. That would make it even better because we would get more surrounding the story that would give it more depth! That being said, for a super short read, it was cute and wonderful!
Short and sweet with only 7 chapters. That’s the problem with shorts though - they aren’t long enough. I feel like the title of the book is a little misleading. Not enough grumpiness or enough about being a fireman!
Make this a little longer with a little more romance between the two and I think it would be a winner!
I thought it was cute it was clean kisses only my only issue is that there were a couple times where there were curses. it wasn't the worst and dirtiest of all curses, she alternateed between damn and hell. otherwise it was good. and aside from usesing the Lords name in vain (once)
I got this book to review and I’ll give my honest review I wasn’t expecting things to turn out the way they did. The book felt like there was a rush to it and no backstory into the characters issues or trust for that matter. I know this story was supposed to be a light read but it made things confusing and left a lot of questions to things. If you like a light read and dont care if things are left unanswered than this book is for you. It was or could be a good book but i feel this book as a light read short story isn’t right for it.
This is shorter than a novella with all the double spacing, and the book really needed more of everything, especially details about the journal Emilia finds, more depth of story line, and more character development.
Emilia arrives in Seaside Falls, almost colliding with a fire truck, where firefighter Luke grumbles at her to pay attention. It seems fate keeps bringing them together and it’s instant love over a local lighthouse that is in dire need of repairs. That makes things difficult when Emilia is offered her dream job back home.
Strange story, it jumped about all over the place and seemed totally out of sync. As I received this in an author giveaway I wonder whether I received a draft copy. The best thing about it, was that it was short.
Grumpy Firefighter + Sunshine Newcomer = A Perfect Slow Burn
The Grumpiest Fireman Next Door is a charming, heartwarming small-town romance that pulled me in from the very first chapter. Emilia Summers’ arrival in Seaside Falls, complete with an almost run-in with a fire truck, sets the tone perfectly. And her first encounter with Luke Bradshaw is pure grumpy/sunshine gold.
Luke is the classic guarded, no-nonsense firefighter with a sharp tongue and a soft heart buried deep underneath, while Emilia is warm, slightly frazzled, and impossible not to root for. Their banter is snarky and fun, but what really stood out was how naturally their connection develops through quiet moments, shared tension, and emotional growth.
The small-town setting adds a cozy, welcoming feel, and the slow-burn romance gives the story space to breathe, making every step toward love feel earned. There’s tenderness, humor, and just enough angst to keep things interesting, all wrapped in a sweet, clean romance that delivers a deeply satisfying happily-ever-after.
This book is perfect for readers who love grumpy heroes, strong yet relatable heroines, and romances about healing, trust, and finding love where you least expect it...right next door.
