THE STORY OF FOOTBALL'S MOST NOTORIOUS COACH
Nicknamed 'Il Mago' (The Wizard) after bringing European Cup glory to Inter Milan in successive years, Helenio Herrera was hailed as one of the finest minds in football.
This explosive book explores the enigma of the incredibly charismatic 'HH': a philanderer, charlatan, trash-talker and serial winner mired in controversy. His stellar career was halted by the death of one of his star players and his subsequent trial for manslaughter.
'HH' revolutionised football coaching. Preparing his teams meticulously, he was obsessed with his players' mental toughness and introduced idiosyncratic psychological techniques. He made his name as a coach, winning La Liga twice with both Atlético Madrid and Barcelona, but it was his move to Inter in 1960 that propelled him to stardom. His team won three scudetti in the mid-1960s and were only denied a third European Cup by Jock Stein's Celtic in 1967.
HH reveals how Herrera was the original master of the game's dark arts. In Spain he introduced a regime of performance-enhancing drugs, and he continued this practice in Italy, which eventually led to his downfall.
Featuring interviews with those who knew Herrera well – including Fabio Capello, Sandro Mazzola, Ian St John and Denis Law – HH is a fascinating story of deceit and intrigue, bloodshed, sex and glorious football.

I'm not a soccer fan so I wasn't sure whether I'd enjoy this. I did. The story unfolds with the recently ended Spanish civil war in the background and the spectre of Franco looming over Madrid and Barcelona. The wheeling and dealing of players, matches, and personalities is second to none.
It was interesting to learn about the soccer but the life of HH is truly intriguing. I don't know if the world of professional sport has a more bizarre character. Great read and highly recommend, even for a non-soccer fan.
Compelling read. Fascinating insight into one of the most polarising figures in Spanish football. The author has really done his research and his sources give colour and perspective to this most controversial figure and the mind games he played to motivate his players and destabilise his opponents. The author gives an incredible account and insight of Franco, the Spanish Civil War (a taboo subject in Spain) and Catalan culture. This is not just a sports book its an insight into the country of Spain and its many complexities. Brilliant read.
Okay, a rags to riches story that proves people can achieve something great in a field they love, but how they got there and what they were willing to do to stay there is a moral paradigm and at what cost to loved ones. A person I had no clue about, but the way I learned about them by the author was written with such clarity and insight it's became a modern parable on what do you need to sacrifice to achieve things in life and is it really worth it?
An enthralling account of an extraordinary life in professional soccer. Herrera puts Jose Mourinho in the shade when it comes to the dark arts of winning at all costs. A driven, ruthless, larger than life character skillfully brought to life by Fitzpatrick. Thoroughly researched and delivered in a direct, punchy manner that rattles along at the same breakneck speed that Herrera barreled through life at.
This is a cracking book full of incredible stories about life and football. The author has thoroughly researched the subject and brought this facinating character alive on the pages. You dont have to be a football fan to enjoy this book, the life of Helenio Herrera is an education for everyone. A super book and highly recommended.
This book provided a real insight into a football coach who was ahead of the game in so many ways but had that dark side to them that in many quarters was unforgivable. I really enjoyed many of the historical insights this provided, as a lover of football this book was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Fascinating read about footballs first and arguably most mysterious celebrity manager ; exceptionally well researched and a life story well told for us all ; whether a sports fan or simply interested in an intriguing personality
This is a superb book. Its not just a sports biography, its a brief history of some of the great European clubs of the 20th century - and an intriguing insight into the strange personality of a key figure associated with many of those clubs. The man was obsessed !
A captivating study of a man, consumed with winning at all costs. The many stories of his conversations with players, his man management techniques and gamesmanship were a particular highlight and endlessly entertaining.
Great read what an interesting story. The book writer captured the essence of the 50s of Francos Spain and the swinging 60s in Italy. How HH got away with what he did amazes me the master of the dark art. He truly was a great coach, ahead of his time in many ways.
Really good read for anyone in to the psychology of sport, leadership. You feel the authors passion for the subject, and the level of depth draws you in.
