From multi-award-winning author David Catuhe comes a breathtaking saga of ancient gods and nature magic.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "A coming-of-age masterpiece that feels like a Studio Ghibli movie in book form."
When the gods sleep, the world begins to die.
Menilmonea is a mycomanceress. Gifted with the power to commune with nature and command mushrooms, she has always lived by the strict traditions of her people and their worship of the Mother.
But silence has fallen over the village. Tunka, the colossal Turtle Titan and protector of their land, has failed to awaken from his slumber.
With their guardian silent, Menilmonea and her friend Aureal must leave everything they know behind. Their cross a perilous land to seek aid from the neighboring Frog Titan. But what begins as a desperate quest for help spirals into a discovery that challenges history itself.
The adventure begins when you stop following the rules.
As the world teeters on the verge of collapse, Menilmonea must embrace the power she once feared to uncover a truth that could save her people... or shatter their reality forever.
Perfect for fans of The Last Airbender and the atmospheric fantasy of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

What a thrilling fantasy adventure!
From the very first chapter, I was hooked into the story. The story centers on two young women, Menilmonea and Aureal, who go on an adventure to find out why their village’s Titan won’t wake up. Right away, you can tell something is amiss in their world and the story slowly reveals itself.
I loved the friendship between Menilmonea and Aureal. When it comes to fantasy heroes, they were both more on the “softer” side (which I found refreshing) but together they shined. They brought out the best in each other and were true ride or die friends.
I liked how the characters took their time on their journey. They would actually stop and rest and cook which gave the story a practical realism that isn’t always present in fantasy.
The world building was fantastic. It was intricate yet easy to understand (for the most part). I liked that the world was cottage core fantasy with a slight sci-fi twist. My one small critique is that during the reveal at the end there was a lot of information being presented. It was a little hard to put it all together.
The book also features numerous full color illustrations done by the author (and without the use of AI). Not only were these stunning, but they were helpful to the worldbuilding and made the story feel so immersive. The author even has these images available in high resolution to download for free on his website (which I did).
Overall, this was a magical read! I cannot wait for the second book to come out.
Catuhe’s Menilmonea: The Cycle of the Titans is the first installment in this series. With its well crafted nature the series seems promising if based on this book. When the protector of the village Titan Tunka fall into a deep slumber Aureal and Menilmonea seek help from neighboring villages. A trip they are allowed to make only to batter goods every six moons through desperation, the tradition doesn’t seem as blasphemous anymore. What started as a journey to seek help becomes greater than they could have thought?
Catuhe skillfully unravels the plot and entrances readers with its content. It shows how we never question what already exists. This fantasy novel is rich as the plot and sub plot hold resonance for those who are always curious. The bravery shown through the protagonists is inspiring . The character arc is well displayed as they progressively grow not only in their thinking but also in their actions as well. I highly recommend it for fantasy and mystery lovers. I eagerly await the second book.
This book truly takes you on quite a journey. From the off, you’re thrown straight into this echoing, magical world where Menilmonea’s talking to mushrooms like it’s the most ordinary thing ever. And her mate Aureal keeps things grounded, though you can tell she’s hiding a few tricks up her sleeve.
The bond between the two made a long-lasting impression on me. They’re cheekily clever, most loyal, and giving each other grief one minute and the next, voilà, saving the world. The story’s lush, with all these forest walks, Titan guardians, and crazy magical Towers. It’s got everything: danger, mystery, and some proper emotional punches, especially when Tunka falls into that deep slumber.
The twists and turns of the plot keep you on your toes; just when you think you’ve figured it out, the Traitor shows up and flips everything on its head. It’s dark, it’s clever, and it makes you care about every Titan and human alike. Honestly, it’s a proper adventure with heart, humour, and a bit of mad spore magic. Can’t wait for the next one.
I absolutely adore fantasy books of all shapes and sizes, but I do think some of them can take themselves a bit too seriously. Menilmonea remembers that you can have a big globe trotting adventure with a magical world and serious stakes but still have fun with it.
Menilmonea is a charming book with a lot of time and care put into the world as well as the characters. I can’t stress enough how much of a breath of fresh air the main character, Menilmonea herself, is. She’s a mycomanceress, which allows her to talk to plant life, and she’s not really an adventurer by trade. She’s optimistic and, honestly, really naive but there’s a genuine charm to how innocent she is. For sure she’s the first fantasy adventure protagonist I’ve read about that actually bursts into tears when she think she got her friend into trouble.
It’s not all whimsy, though. Menilmonea has a beautifully crafted world, there’s a lot of thought put into the myths and mythical beings of the setting and every time you come across something magical, particularly whenever the Titans are mentioned or shown, you can feel that sense of scale and history that the best of these fantasy worlds craft together, something you can really get lost in.
If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted story about a young girl out of her depth going on a quest to save her village I can’t think of a better place to start than Menilmonea!
Menilmonea and Aureal’s epic journey is a fantasy adventure that delivers on all fronts. This book is a true gem, weaving a tale of friendship, courage, and self-discovery that is as enchanting as it is thrilling.
From the very beginning, the story draws you in with its vibrant world-building (The gorgeous illustrations are exquisite). The village of Tunka, nestled at the foot of a gentle Titan, feels like a real place, and the characters of Menilmonea, the mycomanceress, and Aureal, her loyal best friend, are immediately relatable. Their banter is charming and their bond is the heart of the story.
The plot is a masterclass in pacing, starting with a seemingly small problem (a Titan falling asleep) that quickly spirals into a continent-spanning quest. Each new discovery peels back a layer of the world's truth, revealing a history far more complex and darker than the characters ever imagined. The prose is engaging and descriptive, painting vivid pictures of towering mushroom forests, ruined cities, and a magnificent world teetering on the brink of a new age.
What truly sets this book apart is its themes. It explores the power of questioning tradition, the strength found in accepting one's unique gifts, and the profound meaning of found family.
The journey of Menilmonea and Aureal is not just an external one, but an internal one, as they grow from young women into true heroes.
This book is a must-read for any fantasy lover. It's an unforgettable adventure that will leave you both satisfied and eagerly awaiting the next installment. A solid five stars!
Menilmonea by David Catuhe is a beautifully crafted coming-of-age fantasy that blends myth, identity, and wonder into a compelling tale. The story follows Menilmonea, a young mycomanceress whose bond with nature and mushrooms feels more like a curse than a gift. When Tunka, the turtle Titan who protects her village, fails to awaken, she and her friend Aureal embark on a journey to seek help from a neighboring Titan.
What begins as a quest quickly transforms into something far greater. A confrontation with truths that could unravel the very fabric of their world. Catuhe excels at weaving ritual, tradition, and legend into a narrative that feels both timeless and fresh. The novel shines in its ability to subvert expectations: rather than a straightforward fantasy adventure, it becomes a meditation on belief, heritage, and self-discovery.
Richly imaginative and deeply thoughtful, Menilmonea is an enchanting start to a saga that lingers well beyond its final page.
I came across this novel when looking through books in the SPFBO XI contest by Mark Lawrence. Because of the high volume of entries, the contest's first step is a random lottery, and Menilmonea was one of the unfortunate ones that didn't make it through this year. Nevertheless, I was struck by the book's incredible cover and it's obscenely high rating on Amazon. So I gave it a download on kindle unlimited with low expectations.
My Review: Forgive me if I gush a little. David Catuhe is one of those rare gifted few possessing enviable prowess with both prose and visual art.
This book is a treasure. Instantly immersive, every page is full of child-like wonder. I cherished reading it. I couldn't resist the story's charms, nor did I wish to. It transported me into a dream-like world of fantasy where my imagination ran rampant. Some other reviews have mentioned this, and I found it true: It was as if I was walking through a Studio Ghibli film.
The story begins simply enough, with two naive heroines setting out on an adventure to discover what has gone wrong with their friendly local titan. Their magic blooms as their worldview is repeatedly turned upside down.
Arguably, the story isn't perfect, with an info dump from the final boss that left me scratching my head a bit. But inside a dream this glorious, I was too enthralled to care, my heart overflowing with brilliant colors. That's what it felt like.
My favorite fantasy book of recent memory. Five raving stars.
Menilmonea is a captivating and thought-provoking novel that blends mystery, emotion, and imagination into a beautifully written story. The author crafts a rich, immersive world filled with vivid descriptions and complex characters who linger long after the final page. The pacing balances introspection with bursts of suspense, keeping readers emotionally invested throughout. What truly stands out is the depth of feeling and the seamless way the story explores love, loss, and the human desire for connection. Menilmonea is both poetic and powerful—a rare book that leaves readers reflecting deeply on its meaning. A stunning and memorable read
Get ready for an epic journey! This fast-paced book is full of adventure. I loved how Catuhe seamlessly wove all the story elements together, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The artwork throughout was also enjoyable. My only critique is that I wish the photos were in color, as they were extravagant! I experienced the pictures in black and white as I was reading this work on my Kindle; other readers may not have experienced this same limitation depending on how they were experiencing this book. I also enjoyed the friendship between Menilmonea and Aureal; they complement each other and work well together. I am excited for the next book in this series.
This was a fun read that left me excited for the sequel. While very plot-focused, you still can’t help but fall in love with Menilmonea and Aureal and root for them all the way to the end. There was the perfect amount of world-building that it wasn’t too difficult to understand, but I learned just enough to be able to follow the plot without feeling overwhelmed. I also loved the images throughout to really immerse you into the world! I highly recommend this to teens and adults alike! A classic, easy-to-read fantasy that pulls you in from the very start.
This novel reminded me of the fable Journey to the West or the Avatar cartoon series with the giant turtle on the cover, nature magic, and YA themes. Simple villages follow the Great Mother, each with a Titan to guide them. Normal human goals were only to have children (in 90 days) and then “ascend” back to the Mother in paradise. Blessed with skills in mushroom magic, ten-year-old Menil was not normal and wanted more. When their Titan falls silent, she and her best friend seek the nearest other Titan for help. However the other Titans slumber as well. She has no choice but to approach the Tower of creation to get advice from the Mother herself. The art was beautiful, especially the transportation scene.
However the plot and world-building lacked. From the start, such plentiful high-tech iron home trap doors and skillets and in this tiny village without miners didn’t seem to fit the primitive picture painted. Neither does an elaborate map and Menil’s knowledge of magnetic north or days walking distances between villages they’d never heard of. For some reason, the Primal Sentinel who follows them from the beginning and knows everything avoids speaking to them until 2/3 the way through the story. The cosmology gets very confusing regarding who created what, who is on which side, and even what gender Mother is. A lot of “rules” get contradicted during the monologues of almost every being they speak to. Menil also felt too overpowered, able to face something hundreds of more powerful creatures could not. Not sure what’s left to do for any sequel.
nits: Some of the dialog not tagged clearly so we don’t know who is speaking. The other person’s name doesn’t need to be used on every line of dialog. erroneous end quote inside Mother soliloquy on p264. Should consistently use smart apostrophes. Ellipses overused and misused. Colons misused. win’em should be two words. Comma splice: I ought to be happy, I ought Comma splice: it was martial, it was final.
Menilmonea: The Cycle of the Titans by David Catuhe is a refreshing and enchanting addition to the fantasy genre. Catuhe crafts a world that feels both vast and intimate, where towering Titans and delicate whispers of mushroom magic coexist in surprising harmony. The result is a story that’s as whimsical as it is profound.
At the heart of the tale is Menilmonea, a heroine whose gift as a mycomanceress is matched by her struggle to understand who she truly is beyond tradition and expectation. Her journey, alongside the clever Aureal, balances humor, danger, and heartfelt moments of growth. Their adventure feels unpredictable yet purposeful, with revelations that keep the pages turning.
Catuhe’s writing flows effortlessly, weaving together vivid imagery, moments of wonder, and fast-paced action. The illustrations scattered throughout add an intimate, handmade quality, grounding the more mythic elements of the tale. What stands out most is the originality of the worldbuilding—nature and fungi as sources of magic is both unique and thematically rich, offering readers something truly different from standard fantasy fare.
This is a story for fans of whimsical yet meaningful fantasy, where cottage-core charm collides with epic myth. Playful, imaginative, and full of heart, Menilmonea is not just the beginning of an adventure but the start of a series with endless potential. Verdict: A captivating, heartfelt fantasy with originality and charm. Perfect for readers who crave something magical, strange, and deeply human.
I just finished Menilmonea by David Catuhe, and wow, what a journey! The story follows Menilmonea, a young mycomanceress whose connection to nature and mushrooms is both fascinating and a little eerie. I loved how the book blends folklore, rituals, and mythology into a coming-of-age tale that feels fresh and unique.
The world-building is incredible, turtle Titans, frog guardians, and an entire village shaped by traditions that are both beautiful and dangerous. Menilmonea and her friend Aureal are instantly relatable, and I found myself cheering for them as they face challenges that shake their beliefs and everything they thought they knew.
What really sets this book apart is how it balances adventure with introspection. It’s not just about the quests and magical creatures; it’s about identity, heritage, and discovering who you truly are when the rules you’ve lived by start to crumble.
If you love fantasy that’s thoughtful, richly imagined, and completely original, Menilmonea is absolutely worth diving into. I couldn’t put it down!
Menilmonea by David Catuhe starts in such a fun way with Menilmonea talking to mushrooms. When Aureal shows up, you can tell how strong their friendship is just from their banter. It feels easy and genuine, like they’ve known each other forever.
Their village of Tunka is watched over by Titan, a giant turtle, which I loved (the pictures in this s book are amazing). When Titan falls into a long sleep, Menilmonea and Aureal don’t hesitate and set out on a journey to save their wise turtle titan. Along the way, they face golems and guardians. They are even helped by a primal, which adds some really interesting information and helps in their journey.
As the journey continues, they uncover truths about their history that are much darker and more complex than expected. What I loved most was watching their friendship grow even stronger. They rely on each other completely, handle danger together, and still find joy in the simplest moments. They truly make an amazing team. Their friendship was the star of the show for me.
I really enjoyed Menilmonea. David Catuhe writes with a bright, playful voice that made me smile a lot. The story follows Menilmonea, a girl who hears the whispers of mushrooms and roots, and her quick-witted friend Aureal as they try to fix a big problem when the village Titan won’t wake. The world feels fresh and strange in a good way--full of odd little rules, giant Titans, and tiny moments of heart. The handmade illustrations add a warm, personal touch that made scenes stick in my mind.
What I liked most was the mix of humor and real feeling: the book is funny but also about growing up and finding your place. The pacing kept me interested the whole time, and the characters felt real and easy to cheer for. This is a great pick for readers who like whimsical fantasy, not-too-heavy adventure, or stories about friendship and identity. If you want something charming, a little weird, and full of heart, give Menilmonea a try.
In the beginning of the book, Menilmonea resides in a very beautiful village, protected by Tunka, one of the ancient titans, nestled under the Mother`s crown, like many others, yet she cannot help but wonder what else lies there beyond her village`s peaceful life. As day to day activities, she is a mycomancer, she has the ability to sense and communicate with mushrooms and fungi, and is also an occasional storyteller to the kids. One day, rushing to talk to the titan, Menilmonea finds him unconscious. When she arrives to the other village to get help from another titan, surprise, he had also been in a state of unconsciousness for several days! Quite a unique book. Beautifully written. Extraordinary characters, each of them carefully and thoughtfully created. Also, to my surprise, almost each chapter contains a picture, even on the e-book. The animations depicted are exquisite and make the storyline more comprehensive. Overall, a solid ten out of ten.
I've been sitting on this review for a couple weeks because while I really enjoyed this book, I couldn't quite put my finger on what made it stand out from other coming of age stories. The characters are lovable, the plot never seems to drag (well paced I suppose the literary sorts would say), the world was a treasure to explore, not to mention the gorgeous illustrations made it hard to turn the page. Adventure stories call to me, so this was definitely my cup of tea. All that aside, why could I not compare it to anything else I've read?
Finally, it came to me. What makes this book unique is the absence of whiny teen angst - a wonderful change of pace. Coming of age stories can be beautifully written without themes of anger or resentment that seem to dominate this genre and Menilmonea proves it. The friendship between Menilmonea and Aureal is simply lovely.
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have received my copy in a giveaway and I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment.
This book, y'all! THE ART IN THIS BOOK! I wish I had a print copy of this book now! I'm sure the book would have been even prettier in print! The story is awesome, BUT THE ART IS NEXT LEVEL! Please, do yourself a favor and get this book in HARDCOVER. because that is where the full color images are! And, yes. YES. HUMAN MADE. YESSSS!
Action. Adventure. Emotions. So many emotions. So much emotional resonance. And fantasy. And mythology. And - depth. both emotional and immersive. You read and... you end up in another world. The book will literally transport you to a new world. As I was reading it, I scribbled down the words that I'd use to describe what I was reading. Dark. Magical. Intricate. Adventurous. Philosophical. Atmospheric. Tense. Sad. Hopeful. Rich. Did I mention dark? I believe I did, but I had scribbled it down three times.
David Catuhe tells a quiet-turned-urgent coming-of-age set among Titan guardians, village rites, and mushroom-based magic. The young mycomanceress sees her gift as a burden, which makes her easy to root for as she and her friend Aureal leave home to seek help. I liked how the book pairs big, mythic stakes with small, human moments—friendship, doubt, and the courage to break a rule when tradition stops serving people. The prose is clear and inviting, and the nature magic feels genuinely different from standard fantasy systems. Great for readers who enjoy cottagecore vibes, gentle humor, and quest stories with heart—or for gifting to teens who want fantasy that’s imaginative without being grim.
The first thing that caught my eye was the cover—it’s simply the sweetest and instantly set high hopes that the story inside would be just as wonderful. I wasn’t disappointed. Following Menil on her adventurous journey was a joy, and watching her grow from sweet and naïve to determined and strong made the story even more engaging. Her friendship with Aureal was another highlight—fun, heartwarming, and beautifully written.
The illustrations were amazing and added such a fun element to the story and the world building. While this book may be categorized for a younger audience, I truly believe it’s one for all ages. It’s a light, uplifting read and the perfect palate cleanser between heavier books. This sweet coming-of-age fantasy is one I’d happily recommend to readers of any age.
Menilmonea: The Cycle of the Titans is beautiful magic! David Catuhe has crafted a fantasy that is whimsical yet heartfelt, with world-building that is ripe with imagination and shows the author’s grasp over the genre. From whispers of mushrooms to towering Titans, every page feels alive and every detail is surprising. Menilmonea herself is such a relatable heroine. She is brave, funny, and still figuring out who she is beyond the tradition she was born into. Her bond with Aureal is warm and adventurous, making their journey both exciting and emotional. The writing is engaging, the imagery is so vivid that it’s almost cinematic, and the unique mycomancy magic is unlike anything I’ve read before. Enchanting, thought-provoking, and utterly charming!
“Menilmonea: The Cycle of the Titans” by David Catuhe is riveting from the start. We are introduced to Menilmonea, a spritzy and lively young woman that likes to plan out her days. Off the bat, the imagery is fantastical and woodsy. I love the mythical quality Menilmonea exudes quickly, and the detail if the red caps in the forest seeming as if they were waiting for her was so adorable to read. I felt excited to see where Menilmonea would go next with it. I found its practical start to make it more immersive. Menilmonea’s desire to adventure over finding a husband and settle down created a really likeable quality to her. Great read!
I was drawn in by the cover immediately. I stayed for everything else. The story’s cadence, coupled with Catuhe’s excellent worldbuilding sucked me into an immersive world with an unfolding coming of age story. I was captivated by the characters and fantasy backdrop, which added to the depth that is already provided within the story itself. This is a wonderful book for all ages. For teens and adults alike, the characters provide relatability as well as their circumstances. This is the perfect fantasy story to get caught up in if you’re looking for an immersive and captivating tale.
My review does not reflect the art of the cover or the interior. My favorite thing is the vibe of the world, and the fact that this MC is highly connected to nature with a magical system based on fungi with these amazing dormant titans. To save her village, she must wake the turtle, or bad things will happen. She goes on a journey to seek help. As a coming-of-age story, it sometimes feels like it's intended for younger readers (which can be a good book to read as family time) and the world makes it welcoming for all fans of Studio Ghibli. Slow burn but promising start.
Menilmonea is an adventure-based story. After the protector of the land falls into a deep sleep, two friends have to take it upon themselves to leave in desperation to look for help.Aureal and Menilmonea are the ones that go looking for help, and you get to join them in their adventure as they go through the unexpected. The author does a great job in making sure the story is compelling, and I found myself hooked, and I absolutely enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend this book.
The worldbuilding is amazing in this fantasy world, laying the foundation for the adventure of two young women, Menilmonea and Aureal. Their friendship is endearing, as are their character arcs. The stunning artwork included in the story is immersive and a wonderful bonus. This is a great read for middle-grade, YA, or adult fantasy fans.
