Each story in this collection tries to locate an elemental truth, sometimes minor, sometimes so profound it can’t be spoken. The reader recognizes familiar people, from the self-deluding hairdresser in “The Tirade,” to the crude laborer in “The Site,” to the impressionable teenage girl in “Why I Quit the Dairy Shack,” to the embittered single guy in “An Old Fling.” The scenes are ordinary, commonplace. Each protagonist discovers something about himself/herself.
