Celebrity, author, yoga instructor, and wellness enthusiast Mariel Hemingway offers a 30-day plan for total mind and body health Mariel Hemingway’s Living in Balance is not another one-size-fits-all program with rigid rules and baffling instructions. Rather, the simple steps in this practical program to all-over wellness springs from four fundamental areas of food, exercise, silense, and environment. Hemingway, a longtime yoga devotee and one of the leading voices for holistic living, discusses what our bodies and minds need, how to make the best decisions for our daily lives, and why in just 30 days we can all look great, feel great, and find peace of mind. Readers • How what we eat and drink affects how we feel every day. • That exercise not only helps us stay in shape, but connects us to ourselves • How bringing silent reflection into our lives helps us learn to observe, and can positively alter our habits and behaviors. • Why our homes echo the clutter and chaos of the outside world, and how they can be transformed into havens for the balanced life we seek.
Mariel Hemingway (born Mariel Hadley Hemingway November 22, 1961) is an American actress and author. She began acting at age 16 in a breakout role in Lipstick and is best known for her roles in Manhattan (for which she received an Oscar nomination), Star 80, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
She has starred in and co-produced videos about yoga and holistic living. She published a memoir in 2002.
Hemingway was born in Mill Valley, California, the third daughter of Byra Louise (née Whittlesey) Hemingway and Jack Hemingway, a writer. Her sisters are Joan Hemingway (born 1950) and Margaux Hemingway (born 1954). Margaux, who became an actress and model, died of a barbiturate overdose in 1996 at age 42.
Her paternal grandparents were Hadley Richardson and Nobel Prize-laureate novelist Ernest Hemingway (who committed suicide several months before she was born). She was named after the Cuban port of Mariel—her father and grandfather visited the village regularly to go fishing. Her middle name is from her paternal grandmother.
Hemingway's most famous acting role was in Woody Allen's Manhattan (1979), a romantic comedy in which she plays Tracy, a high school student and Allen's lover. Just 16 during filming (within the film she is said to be 17), she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
This is a very well written, easy to follow and implement guide to living better. De-stress, de-clutter, de-toxify...all kinds of tips, exercises, and the importance of cleansing the major areas of your life: home, body, mind, etc. She divides the book into four areas: Food, Exercise, Silence and Home. And while some things (ex. recipes) might not appeal to everyone, there are many easy, interesting, fun things that will appeal to most. Unlike many other self-help books, this one is not complicated and does not require MAJOR, sudden changes but slow, easy ones that make sense and are easy to incorporate. Her stories and writing are humorous and interesting which makes you want to continue on for the next little tidbit nugget. I love the berry shake that fills me up, gives me energy, and is so good for me. Highly recommend if you want to slow down and clear out your mind, body, soul, and home.
Mariel Hemingway provides a 30 day program for healthy living. There are 4 main components of her program: healthy eating, exercise, silence (meditation) and home (creating a calm and peaceful home environment).
The book was easy to read. It was like listening to a wise girlfriend (who happens to be a model & yoga instructor) teaching you everything she has learned about how to look and feel great! It should be noted that this is book written by a woman for other woman to read. I don't think it would appeal as much to men.
The book was all the more moving given Mariel's challenging childhood. She grew up surrounded by a family tortured by alcoholism (both parents), depression (her sister Margaux), suicide (her grandfather and four other members of her family), schizophrenia (her sister Muffet), and cancer (mother). Young Mariel took care of her mother until she died. In this book she shares how she learned to stay balanced through diet, exercise, silence (meditation) and creating a peaceful home sanctuary.
It's a good read. She has lived through a lot, has not only survived but thrived, and she is worth listening to! I will read another book by Mariel.
I wish Mariel a happy healthy life. She deserves it!
I LOVE this book...I bought it last summer and read it cover to cover within a week. I've reread parts of it and am actually now rereading the entire book.
The book itself relaxes me and helps me focus on me, what i'm doing, what's going on with me (mentally, emotionally and physically). It me just be a better person to myself...and when I do that I can be a better person to everyone around me.
I don't follow all her tips down to a T, but the general sense of the overall path to wellbeing that Mariel inspires is amazing and very reachable in today's busy life.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to live a better life, slow down and enjoy the the life they have and celebrate every day for what it is...a gift.
This book was pretty good. I gave you some great tips on how to be more healthy and more relaxed with your lifestyle. I thought the food chapter was a little over the top for me. I'm a normal person and I can't afford to go out and get crazy expensive food every week. Also there is so much stuff that I know that I couldn't live with out. Like Cheese! Also the meditating thing kind of weirds me out a little bit. I enjoyed practicing the yoga moves though. It is one book that I am not going to read again or be keeping around the house for the heck of it.
I am surprised by how much I like this book. I especially appreciate the chapters on silence and home. Her approach to finding calm is very holistic and relate-able. One peeve though is that it seems that she has a lot of time on her hands. I understand the idea of slow living, but I just can't see myself taking the time and energy to set the table with beautiful linens when I have a stack of 50 essays to grade.
I think this would be a valuable book for those who haven't really had much experience living a healthy lifestyle.
For me, there was nothing new, and I actually found it a bit tedious. Also, I hate to say this, but I don't think Ms. Hemmingway has worked out her food issues (which she admits she has), because her diet is extreme, even for those of us who are veteran health food store enthusiasts.
IT is very inspiring. She has great ideas for healthy food, appropriate exercise, meditation techniques (I was inspired to set up an altar) and cleaning out and beautifying your home.
Another book I'm rereading. It is becoming my current bible.I ADORE Mariel Hemingway. If you have any struggles with weight, taking care of yourself, finding balance, or anything similar I think you'd enjoy this.
I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did. It was filled with beautiful pictures and some down-to-earth tips. I understand, given her family history, why she would be concerned with healthy living. Refreshing....
I liked this book. It's a lovely read, in a calm tone to guide you through all things that are good for you. I don't believe in its promise of a "30-day quickstart program" but the ideas are great reminders for a lifetime of peace, health and wellness.
Well written. Great for anyone of any level wanting to explore a more healthy lifestyle. Deals with personal and generational trauma that can cause unhealthy habits and how to heal yourself with kindness and grace through healthy habits and food choices
