A fresh start, that’s all Shelby wanted. A chance to outrun the past, silence the fear, and escape the ex who refuses to let go.
Then came Christian.
Star running back. Future captain. The leader of the pack with steel-colored eyes locked on her. He’s everything she never dared to want—charismatic, untouchable, and somehow, hers.
But shadows don’t just disappear.
The past isn’t done with her. And this time, Shelby’s fight for survival isn’t just her own.
Lynise writes sports romance with heart, heat, and a whole lot of banter. She’s the author behind the Gods of Campus series, where college athletes collide with big emotions, bad decisions, and the kind of love that doesn’t play fair.
She lives in Australia with her husband and three kids, juggling family life, full-time work, and late-night writing.
this is marketed as insta love, it’s not. they meet by her bumping into him. He thinks she’s hot. He calls his fck buddy later that day and they sleep together. If it was insta love, it wouldn’t have that.
For my safety readers, not safe. There’s no on page scene that I saw yet I dnf’d really quick because I wanted something so easy with no drama like that and it wasn’t insta love for me
Thank you so much to Lynise and Greys Promotions for the chance to read this eARC and congrats Lynise on your debut book!
The first chapter had me hooked from the start! I loved reading Shelby’s story and having an Aussie girly in a college romance, the references and Aussie slang was really fun to read and connect with. I was invested in Shelby’s story and felt all the emotions along with her.
Christian was the perfect Football player, reformed playboy and was there for Shelby from the moment he met her, loved the banter and found family and all the side characters just made me so excited for this series! Seth 🥵🥵 loved him!
Running Play had me invested from the first chapter! This story truly takes you on a wave of emotions especially with Shelby’s past. Running Play features Shelby an Australian and Christian set in college in America. It was refreshing to see an Australian character written well as an Australian myself I sometimes cringe with how we are portrayed by some authors. This college football, reformed playboy romance had the right amount of banter and spice with a little suspense. I adored all the side characters we met, there is nothing better than a great friendship group who are loyal and their banter was perfect. I can’t wait for the rest of the series and congratulations Lynise on your fabulous debut novel. I received a complementary copy from Grey’s Promotion.
The best part of ARC reading is getting books like this. I adore this book completely consumed by it. Shelby moves to the US from Australia to get some peace and feel safe from her absusive ex. She enrolls in college and quickly becomes besties with her roommate ate. Christian is the typical playboy jock football player. Charismatic and charming and everyone loves him. I love them together and I love how Christian is toward her. They definitely fall hard for each other and then the worst of the worst happens. The banter between the guys is absolutely ridiculously hilarious. I was laughing so hard in a few parts! I’m so so so excited to see where this series goes!! 🥰😍🤩
If, like me, two of your favourite genres are sports romance and romantic suspense, then this one merges them together for a fun and addictive read!
Shelby has moved to the US for a fresh start after a horrible ordeal at the hands of her ex boyfriend who ended up in prison back home in Australia. Christian is one of the campus football stars and finds himself drawn to her, despite his usual aversion to serious relationships. When her past follows her and threatens not just her life, but those she loves, she must choose which sacrifices to make.
This was an engaging, quick read with a good amount of plot and satisfying action at the end. I felt for Shelby because she'd been through a lot and had to make difficult choices to protect her loved ones from being caught in the cross-fire.
I'll definitely be reading more of this series, loved some of the side characters and the found family aspect too. I also enjoyed the mix of hockey and football, with a bit of rivalry but allowing readers to be fans of both!
Running Play by Lynise Reid will take you on an emotional ride that you do not want to get off of.
From the moment I started the prologue, I was hooked. Leaving Australia for new beginnings at College, Shelby homes the change of scenery is just what she needs. She has no desire to date, but rather have a season of her. However when she has a run in, literally with the star running back, she changes her tune.
Christian Stone is the standard for what men should be. Because when he falls, he falls hard. He is a loyal MMC with golden retriever energy.
And as Shelby and Christian progress their relationship, her past came knocking with a vengeance.
With tropes of who hurt you, college sports romance, golden retriever MMC, strong FMC, and suspense, you will not want to put down this book.
This is book 1 in the Gods of Campus series. As you meet the cast of characters, you will be ready for the next book.
First of all thank you for this book I was lucky enough to get sent an ARC copy! I smashed it through in one day, I couldn't stop reading it. I loved all the characters & the banter between them all had me laughing out loud! Aussie FMC Shelby is starting fresh in America for College after a troubled past, she ends up meeting one of a kind friends & meeting MMC Christian who just gives off golden retriever vibes for a boyfriend! 💖 Her life in America doesn't stay peaceful for long!
If you love college football romance, found family, fresh start this book is for you!!
“Go back to sleep, baby, I won’t let anyone hurt you.” I press a kiss to his hand clenched against my chest and exhale a breath of relief. Christian is my hero, my protector, and that thought brings me so much peace.
“With this woman, every minute with her just keeps getting better and better.”
What a debut! This read is highly addicting and fun with some serious themes mixed in. I love a good college sports romance and Shelby and Christian’s story didn’t disappoint! When Shelby comes to California for a new start the last thing she was expecting was to catch the eye of it man on campus, footballer Christian. But he feel hard for her and in doing so Shelby was folded into his family of friends. The banter with these guys was great and seeing how much they took care of and protected the women in their lives was hot! Really enjoyed this read, congratulations Lynise Reed on a first book! Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Tropes: Insta Love College Football Romance Found Family Golden Retriever MMC Reformed Playboy
I’m always a fan of sports romance but even more so when it’s football, that will always be my favorite.
I honestly enjoyed the layout of the story, the hidden suspense as you wait for the “jump scare” of the stalker to return back. Everytime a new character or location was introduced I was thinking “here it comes” but then I’d be wrong. So the suspense kept building.
I personally am not into the college lifestyle being I am way out of that stage of life lol but it was a fun read regardless!
First...I want to say congratulations to Lynsie Reid on their debut book!! It's not small feat and I always love seeing new authors coming onto the scene. That being said...this book as a whole just didn't work for me.
My first big issue is that the book is marketed as "insta-love" but there is nothing of the sort going on...Shelby is our FMC who has moved from Australia to America to start over and escape the trauma and abuse of her ex. Christian is our playboy, "It" boy football player, MMC...he's exactly what you think and exactly what he should be for a college sophomore. The two bump into each other on campus and there is SOME attraction. Shelby thinks he's good looking but it doesn't go beyond that...and Christian thinks Shelby is hot, but literally walks off and gets into bed with his F buddy...without giving Shelby a second thought...and CONTINUES to do this for more than half the book....to me that isn't insta-love...that isn't even insta-lust or like...it's just a guy seeing another hot girl and thinking he can add her to his roster.
In my opinion , Shelby had more chemistry with Christians best friend...they had banter and sweet moments...Christian and Shelby only interacted in a group setting with group dates...group dates Christian initiated after getting bored with his FWB situation.
I didn't feel any longing or yearning...certainly no love or real emotion from either of them. There was a lot of the author TELLING us what they were feeling but there was absolutely NO showing...I couldn't see anything real between these two and it really made me disconnect from the book.
There was an element of suspense and danger added with the ex coming back into the picture to create chaos...but honestly it felt a little out of place and out of the blue. The story in itself had a great plot line with really good potential but it was super choppy and all over the place...it made it very hard to follow and get fully immersed in the book.
The whole thing felt like I was reading about kids in high school rather than college...which ok...they were still pretty new into their college journey so I understand that. But with the heavy topics being dealt with, it felt like they could have handled things better. Shelby was confusing for me...she was acting like things were awful...horrible back home, she needed to escape to find some sort of support and a fresh start...which...FAIR...BUT...she had a SUPER supportive family back home...like the kind of supportive family we all wish we had. They were willing and able to do anything to help and protect her...so her complaints about not having support and feeling alone felt more like complaining to get attention rather than a real problem. Because she had everything she said she needed back home and decided to leave that...and even when she did her family STILL supported her...so I was...very confused.
All in all I think it was a good effort for a first book. I definitely think it could have been workshopped a bit more and the plot lines flushed out and better executed...but I think the series in general has potential. The side characters were what saved the book and I'm excited to see where this goes.
Thank you so much to Lynsie Reid and Greys PR for the opportunity to ARC read this book. 💙

I devoured this book in just under two days—it was such an easy and enjoyable read that I couldn’t put it down. The story flowed effortlessly, and I was completely drawn in from the start.
What really made this book stand out for me were the characters. I genuinely loved them all. Each one brought something unique to the story, and their personalities felt real and relatable.
There’s a perfect balance of suspense, thrills, romance, and humor. I found myself holding my breath in tense moments, smiling during the romantic scenes, and laughing out loud more than once.
Christian and Shelby’s relationship was especially heartwarming. Christian is so gentle and patient with her—never pushing, always understanding. His protectiveness and the way he respects her need to take things slow added a beautiful depth to their connection.
But my absolute favorite character was Randy. His energetic personality, his fierce loyalty to his friend group, and his constant attempts to lighten the mood with a well-timed joke had me grinning throughout the book. He brought so much warmth and humor to the story.
Overall, this was a fantastic read—emotionally satisfying, fast-paced, and full of heart. Highly recommended if you're looking for a story that blends suspense, romance, and genuinely lovable characters.
“It scares me how hard I might fall for this guy if I let myself—or worse, if I can’t help myself.”
i was so excited for this book, it started off so strong and i honestly thought i was going to love it based off the first couple chapters alone.
unfortunately this fell off a bit for me because one of the tropes was “insta love” — which i LOVE! but at this point the main characters are just flirting from a distance and while the mmc says he’s interested in her he still is sleeping with his fuck buddy?
maybe it’s just me but i am very possessive when it comes to book boyfriends and i want them to be all about the fmc, so while i wouldn’t have minded him having a f buddy to begin with — i couldn’t get past the fact that he was talking about pursing the fmc and then in the same conversation them (f buddy) talking about having “a good last night” or however it was put 😭
this plot and story had great potential but it just wasn’t for me because of that side plot.
this was an arc read given to me by the author and greys promo, all thoughts and opinions are my own
Overall I enjoyed this one, a great debut by Lynise! Shelby is looking for a fresh start after a traumatic ending with her ex. One that has her leaving Australia and finding herself in the US. Even though a she’s an ocean away she still finds herself looking over her shoulder- while also trying to find freedom and enjoy life. Christian is the star running back who doesn’t do serious - until he meets Shelby and is absolutely enamored with her. He’s not sure why but she’s started to consume his every thought and he thinks he might finally be ready for more than just a hookup.
Omg I love Randy 🤣 Actually I really liked all of the side characters- can’t wait to see where this series goes!

College Sports Romance | Protective Friends | Second Chances
Shelby didn’t come to America looking for love—she came to outrun her past. But fate had other plans. New school, new friends, new chaos. And Christian? The star running back with steel eyes and a quiet intensity? He sees her. Really sees her.
Letti, her new roommate along with the rest of the crew, are the kind of friends you want in your corner—funny, loyal, and ready to throw hands if needed. Their dynamic gives the story warmth and bite, and the banter? Chef’s kiss.
But just when things start to feel safe, Shelby’s past catches up. Her ex isn’t just toxic—he’s dangerous. And Shelby makes the kind of choice that hurts everyone, because she thinks it’s the only way to protect them.
This book is full of twists, tension, and the kind of chemistry that feels earned. Shelby and Christian aren’t perfect—but they’re real. And watching them fall, fight, and find each other again? Worth every page.
Tropes: College sports romance Fresh start / new identity Protective best friends Star athlete falls first Stalker ex-boyfriend Found family on campus Sweet + intense chemistry
Spice 🌶🌶 Mostly emotional tension with a few swoony, heated moments. Think: slow burn with payoff, not graphic but definitely felt.
Arc review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I loved this, it was fun, entertaining and heartwarming. The plot was very intriguing from the start, check trigger warnings though, our main character, Shelby, had a lot to work through after a traumatic experience with her ex boyfriend, so she moves from Australia to the USA where she meets Christian. I loved how open they were with eachother, we rarely get emotionally mature characters in romance books set in college (understandable, but I love it when we do get them), so watching them making it clear that they want one another instead of playing games or hiding their feelings was a great change of pace from the usual plot you would get in most, even if not all, college romances. It did feel a bit rushed once they got into the relationship, I would like to see more of them getting to know each other. The found family was amazing, I loved Lettie and Travis letting Shelby in so quickly and becoming so protective of her. Christian’s friends and siblings included her so fast, I especially loved Randy’s relationship with Shelby. I’d love to read more about these characters in the future, I absolutely recommend this book if you’re looking for: 🏈college romance 🇦🇺fast paced 🏈found family 🇦🇺light suspense 🏈sports romance 🇦🇺great side and main characters 🏈protective mmc 🇦🇺emotionally mature characters
This is just the book you need to clean your pallet.
Shelby is dealing with some serious trauma that has caused her depression, anxiety, and even panic attacks. She moves all the way across the Pacific Ocean to start over. Where the start running back has caught her attention.
Christian is a football god every girl is after but not one of them can tie him down. Until Shelby, there’s just something about her and he is intrigued.
What I really loved about this book is the growth of all the characters. The family trope is huge in this book and makes it that much better. The friends make this book. Shelby and Christian’s cemetery is on point.
I feel this book has a little bit of everything. Plot, intensity, romantic, spice, not overly detailed, and the laugh out loud parts are phenomenal!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I highly recommend this book.
Shelby’s just trying to start over, but her past won’t let her breathe. She’s got trauma, fear, and an ex who’s basically a walking nightmare. Then Christian shows up—star athlete, total heartthrob, and somehow, he sees her. Really sees her. And that’s where things start to shift. The romance is fast and fierce. Christian’s protective streak is strong, maybe a little too much at times, but it works because Shelby needs someone in her corner. Their connection feels real—like two people clinging to each other. Shelby’s fear is always there, and the tension builds as her past creeps closer. You feel her panic, her fight, her need to be free. And Christian? He’s not backing down. He’s all in, even when things get dark.
First I’d like to thank Lynise for giving me the opportunity to read her debut novel that’s going to be published on September 2nd! It will be available on KU and is open to pre-orders now.
Our FMC Shelby is Australian looking for a fresh start after leaving to attend school in NorCal to escape her abusive ex. She’s strong, determined and learning her way in a new environment.
Christian a sophomore running back is kind, understanding, funny, and a bit of a player until he meets Shelby. Falling fast and hard for her he’s smitten for her.
Their relationship is put to the test when her past starts to catch up with her and begins to threaten her new life in California.
This book overall is a fun read containing strong themes, steamy (at about 52%), banter, they’re such a sweet couple and I can’t wait for what comes next! Congratulations Lynise and I’d just like to request Seth’s books please thank you!

I was lucky enough to be chosen to read Running Play as an ARC, and this review is my honest opinions
This is not your ordinary Sports Romance, am I mad about it? F**K NO! This story is a Dual POV following Shelby, an Australian who moves to the US for University, and Christian, the all star footballer. I loved this book it kept me on my toes, there's little teasers throughout the book keeping you engaged with the story. My only points are, I would have loved more Aussie slang used, and the spicy scenes were mild, BUT the story line definitely makes up for the simmer of the spice scenes.
This is the first book written by Lynise Reid and I am so excited for more to come in this series❤️❤️
A college sports romance full of fun banter, drama and suspense and of course found family amongst friends
Shelby, arrives in America, running from her past she had to escape, and gets thrown into the full college experience of friends, parties and of course gets to swoon over the hot football and hockey players.
Christian, the star running back always filling his time with no commitment relationships, sees Shelby for the first time and is so enamoured with her, he aims to find out everything he can about her
These two were so sweet, I loved them together, I loved the friends group and all the banter that came with it
I loved all the side characters and really hoping for a book for Seth! 😉
🏈College Romance 🎮 Strong Heroine 🏈 Golden Retriever MMC 🎮 Who Hurt You 🏈 New beginnings 🎮 Starting Fresh
Bonus points for all the Australian references - I loved them all it was so much fun!
Thankyou to Lynise and Greys promotions for the ARC
DNF at 53%. I gave it a good try but was not connecting with the writing style. The storyline moved too slow and It was also giving more high school vs college vibes. The dialogue felt very forced at times.
If you’re a fan of college sports romance, golden retriever MMCs, second chances, and a healthy dash of Australian sass, Running Play is the read you need to pick up next 💖
Shelby 🇦🇺 is starting over in California after surviving a traumatic and abusive relationship back home. She’s tough, determined, and just wants a chance at a normal college life. Enter Christian 🥰 a sweet, swoony football player who falls hard and fast for her (and honestly, who wouldn't?).
Christian is the ultimate golden retriever boyfriend. Loyal, kind, protective, and completely smitten. Their chemistry is instant, and their relationship quickly becomes the safe space Shelby has been searching for. But just as she's letting herself breathe again, ghosts from her past start creeping back in. Text messages from her ex ... and Shelby’s new beginning is suddenly under threat.
This story perfectly blends heart-pounding romance with real-life emotional stakes. I loved the dynamic between Shelby and Christian. It’s sweet, steamy, and full of mutual respect (yes to emotionally mature leads!!). The side characters and strong friendships added so much warmth, and the Australian flavour made Shelby’s voice really stand out 🇦🇺✨
A gripping, emotional, and hopeful read that reminds you: healing is messy, but love can be a safe place to land. 💕

Thank you so much to Lynise for reaching out to me with the opportunity to arc read.
This book follows Shelby who has come to the US from Australia for college and to get away from her psycho ex who was stalking her. She meets Christian, our star football player, when they literally run into each other on campus, and after a string of coincidental meetings around he finally asks her out on a date and things intensify from there.
The prologue in this had my heart racing and needing to know more, and I read the book in less than 2 days.
Despite the romantic suspense element, I found the book a really cute easy read, bracketed by a suspenseful start and finish. I loved both MC’s, and the character growth for both Shelby and Christian was clear to see throughout. There was a whole bunch of great side characters involved too, and I was so glad that Shelby didn’t isolate herself and throw herself completely into Christian, she was making an effort to maintain friendships outside of him and considering her past, I was glad she was making sure she had a support system around her.
I loved the way the group of guys all interacted too, major found family vibes between these friends and Seth in particular has me needing to know more about him 😅 I am a sucker for a grumpy quiet man especially when he’s tattooed and rides a motorbike 🤭
Overall, I enjoyed where the story took us and it was a good starting point for a debut novel.
Shelby was attacked by her ex-boyfriend and she no longer feels safe at home in Australia, so she decides to attend college in America in order to hide from him. Christian is the star of the football team and isn’t looking for a commitment. Shelby literally runs into Christian and things change for him. He wants to get to know her better. But will her past come back to haunt her, even an ocean apart?
I love how Christian just sneaks his way into Shelby’s life. It isn’t some big, grand gesture. It’s movies, pizza, parties. He is considerate of her issues and is an all around good guy. Shelby has trust issues, with good reason, and all her friends, Christian included, make her feel comfortable and push when they need too, but also pull back. I love her group of friends, and can’t wait to read more about them. They are funny, goofy, protective boys that made me love them.
I can’t believe this is a debut novel. It is so well written and polished, which you don’t see right out of the gate. She found her voice right away and it is amazing. I am so glad this stumbled across my email. I am going to need to know more about these football guys and wouldn’t mind more about the hockey team either! I highly recommend stepping foot onto this college campus. 5/5⭐️ 4/5🌶️
ARC review: A special thank you to greys promotion and Lynise for the opportunity.
Running play follows Shelby, who moves to a new country in order to escape her difficult past. Settling into her new life, Shelby hits the jackpot of roommates with Letti and both characters build a beautiful supportive friendship.
What Shelby doesn’t expect however, is to catch the eye of Christian - the IT man who could have his pick of the ladies. As the story unfolds, we get to witness the relationship between the two main characters escalate and it’s not too long before Shelby’s past comes back with a vengeance.
I absolutely loved the overall storyline of Running Play and it has the beginnings of an excellent series! I’m excited to see whose book comes next as well as unfold the background of the other characters. However the writing just needs a small touch up - a few parts were clunky or the dialogue was a tad awkward. Without these issues it would be hitting a solid 4 - 4 1/2 stars!
Congratulations Lynise Reid on a cracker of a first book!
What a debut novel! This prologue is one that grips you from the start and has you on the edge of your seat because you know her past will rear its ugly head.
Shelby is a a beautiful and strong character. She uproots her life in Australia and attends college in America to get her life back, a sense of safety. There she starts to get pieces of her old self back as you meets and makes some of the best friendships. Loved her friendship with Letti, Travis and Randy. She has her own “found family” since hers was so far away.
Christian was intrigued by Shelby from the moment they ran into each other. After their second time, he was drawn to her and knew he had to get to know her better. He was patient and so understanding when Shelby opened up about her past. I did found it cringy that he slept with his FWB the same night he asked Shelby out for a date.
Liked the plot and the characters and I can’t wait to read more from this series!
I liked this book...but a few things felt too cheesy like it would be in a Hallmark movie? It didn't stop me from liking it obviously, and I was interested the whole time. Christian ended up being amazing but I was worried at first. Playboy had a hard time committing but when he did....mmmm did he. 🤌🏾 Shelby was young but had a good head about her. She was relatable with her anxiety and insecurities. The side characters were all likeable as well, which isn't always the case.
Seth needs a background story and his grumpy self needs a sunshine lady. Randy was very entertaining and Walsh was a good guy. Loved Travis and Letti. I bet Tyler will have an interesting story since he's screwing around so much. I thought Dani would get with Seth, but maybe Seth's story will be a second chance instead of best friend's little sister?
The friend groups throughout had some great, funny lines, and were always entertaining. Makes you want to join in, it was so authentic.
I had the absolute joy of reading Running Play, a debut novel by Lynise Reid, and I loved every single page. I picked it up in the morning and didn’t put it down until I finished—it’s one of those books that completely sweeps you away.
One of my favorite aspects? The third act breakup. I don’t say this often, but it was so beautifully executed—emotional, believable, and deeply satisfying. Best of all, it avoided the dreaded miscommunication trope 🙌. Instead, it felt authentic and necessary for the characters’ growth, which made the resolution even more rewarding.
I also adored the found family element—with Shelby being away from home, the relationships she built added so much warmth and heart to the story. Combined with the touch of suspense woven throughout, it kept the pages turning and made this such a compelling, layered read.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5) — A captivating, one-sitting debut that left me eager to see what Lynise Reid writes next.
📖 Huge thank you to Lynise Reid for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
🎉 And since it’s release day—Happy Publication Day, Running Play! You can grab your copy now, and it’s also available on Kindle Unlimited.
I am so grateful to have been given an ARC of this book!! Plus, it’s her debut novel which makes this even more exciting!! I ate this book up! It was so cute and definitely reminiscent of things I would read on Wattpad when I was younger. The found family was perfection (my favorite trope of all time!!!), the characters had such a fun dynamic, and I adored the romance. Christian and Shelby will always have my heart. I’m realllllly hoping the next book is about Seth tho, I’m so intrigued by him!!
