Lathar Mercenaries: Warborne #7

Alien Mercenary’s Wife

Rate this book
She was their loose end. Now she's their worst nightmare.

Former tank commander Reese Payne is living on borrowed time. Her neural implants are killing her slowly while she’s forced to dodge corporate assassins sent to bury the evidence.

When they finally track her down, she's ready for a fight—what she’s not ready for is the seven-foot alien who rips through her attackers like they're made of tissue paper. T'Raal is huge, dangerous, and trusting him is probably the dumbest move she's ever made. But when his touch quiets the chaos in her head and he looks at her like she's worth dying for, she has to figure out what scares her more… dying alone, or letting this handsome stranger become everything she never knew she needed.

His secret could shatter an empire. Her survival depends on it.

T'Raal has his life figured keep the crew breathing, stay off the radar, and don't let anyone get close enough to complicate things. Simple... until he pulls one stubborn human woman from an ambush and she turns his whole world upside down. She fights like hell, trusts him when she shouldn't, and makes him want things he gave up hoping for years ago.

Problem is, keeping her alive means claiming the birthright he's spent his life running from. But watching her die isn't an option—even if saving her means claiming the destiny he swore he'd never face.

In a galaxy that wants them dead, the greatest battle will be for each other.

Whilst this is part of a longer running series, the Warborne are fast becoming everyone's (I.E. My!) favourite misfit crew! They have this reputation, well deserved, of being brave, ruthless, reckless and force to be reckoned with. But under that façade they are all mushy marshmallow. They just can't help themselves, when they get a call to help a stranger up against a corporation, they're suited up and ready for action!

Reese is the kind of military veteran you can't help but respect. She has the respect of her team, her superiors respect, and she won't allow her declining mental and physical health be swept under the rug. She wants justice for her and her team and she'll stop at nothing to get it.

T'raal may be the captain of the crew, but he's more like honorary dad to them all. He keeps them in line, keeps them paid and he stops Sparky from blowing up everything! Eris comes to him for help and he deploys the team to help without needing to know much more than Eris respects Reese. He's hiding some big secrets and I loved learning more about his past and his connections to the Latharian Empire.

A fight against corrupt corporations and medical negligence, juxtaposed against a failing and inefficient veterans affairs and you realise that even in Sci-Fi romance veterans get a raw deal and corporations still try to get away with literal m*rder. I won't lie to you, this book made me tear up on occasion, the depictions of Reese's health and her determination to get justice hit me hard in the feels. As usual our MMC respects and admires his kelarris' strength, skills and k1llshots! It moves at a rapid pace and the MC's are pretty much instant attraction but that is no bad thing!

I can't wait for the next book 'cos it looks like out favourite Emperor is about to fall!

Not good

The writer seemed to be obsessed with a particular phrase, a writing crutch if you will: “… than he/she intended”.

“Her words were harsher than intended.”
“His voice was rougher than he intended.”
Etc etc.
Over and over again. It was repetitive and annoying once I noticed it. It made the writing look lazy, almost like it might be AI.

What really gave it the AI look was about half way through they lead up to a confrontation with another ship that was incoming weapons hot but then cuts off and in the next chapter they’ve moved on and there’s no mention of what that was about. No aftermath or mention of it ever again.

Also there was this weird inconsistency with the court case information. People would be mentioned and then just disappear from the conversation. And not in the same way the assassinated characters were. There didn’t seem to be a set group of veteran survivors, or at least there wasn’t a set group outside of Huges and Mason and Payne. Not that I could discern. There were even characters called Williams and Ryans but I’m not sure if they were offed or if they just voluntarily disappeared. And also there was information that the character clearly had that apparently was a surprise to them when it was brought up in the court room scene later. Which was weird too.

Why they didn’t just collect all the information and then blast it out on whatever passed for the internet in this future I will never know. It almost seemed like they were letting the corporations control the entire narrative start to finish with no push back to gain a better public opinion.

Also I absolutely hated the direction of the Epilogue…

That was disappointing. I've been waiting for his books forever, since book 1 or 2 of the Warborn, and this was a let down in my opinion.

I wish we had had more Zero in it, seeing as he and his siblings were kind of relevant.

I didn't really love the plot. I understood the need for the lawsuit but they absolutely would have been able to handle that remotely and without Reese having to risk her life by going in person. That made no sense.

There were wayyy too many names involved in the lawsuit - to the point that I think even the author got them mixed up.

The writing felt sloppy in all honesty. Sometimes it didn't even seem like her writing style at all.

And I don't know what happened between chapters 10 and 11. I'm not sure if we're missing a chapter or what. Ch 10 ends with another merc crew incoming and then preparing for a potential fight. Ch 11 starts with Reese having a nightmare sometime later, waking up in her bed. The other merc crew is never mentioned again.

I won't be continuing this series. The only two I even care about now are the Ferals and the other mercenary crew (I can't remember their name - the one with Jesh).

For the first part of the book we are following two separate stories and the couple doesn’t even know of each other. At 26% they see each other. Then it goes pretty quickly. I really liked the book and it took me awhile to get into it.

I really enjoyed this one! It pulled me in from beginning to end and I loved getting T'Raal's story finally! We have gotten to see him through all the other Warborne books in the series, as he is team commander, and we finally see him find his mate. Reese is fighting a battle against a huge corporation that is using underhand tactics and making people and information disappear. They provided defective neural stimulators that are now failing and causing degradation in their neural pathways continuing on to paralysis and death. She is not the only one, it is a whole section, she even has the affected batch numbers but things have not gone smoothly and the vets in the class action lawsuit keep disappearing and having "accidents" that clearly aren't really accidents. She is determined to keep fighting for her people though. She ends up with a last ditch effort to reach out for help when they target her and are trying to kill her and she is just barely staying a step ahead of them. Eris is the one that gets the message, they use to fight in the same unit, and they answer the call for help. T'Raal is ready to take on this battle and considers her family because she is family to Eris. There is an immediate connection between them and I loved seeing them circle around each other on the ship. They both felt the attraction but were not immediately acting on it though the tension and flirting was there. I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other and move to that next step as T'Raal recognized her for the strong warrior she was and didn't see her as broken but injured. This story was well written and flowed well. It had plenty of intrigue and action as well as some secrets being revealed that will affect things in the next books within the Lathar world, not just this series. While it isn't as action intense as some have been in the past, I didn't feel this one needed it or called for it. It had more build up with the case and gaining evidence and how to play it out while figuring out how to help/heal Reese and allowing us to get to know these two characters on a deeper level. I truly enjoyed this and am sad that the Warborne is now over but have absolutely loved this series and can't wait to see more glimpses of them within future books set in the Latharian universe.

looking forward to more

Best one yet in this series. This book begins with Military Veterans trying to get support and justice for faulty implants used purposely. Unfortunately the group that began with 53 veterans has now shrunk to less than 10 due to “unfortunate circumstances “ labeled as suicides and accidental deaths. The large company they are fighting against has deep pockets and are connected with other underground corporations as well as major Government entities. Files are being erased and fabricated, the wheels of justice simply cannot move. Caption Reese becomes desperate for help and posts an encrypted post on a website that select few will be able to receive. Eric’s Archer who is now a Warborne member gets the message and goes to her captain T’Raal to ask for help rescuing Reese.
The rescuer sets off events that make this one of my favorite books of this series. These are a must read in order to understand the nuance of the characters and who is who. The couple pairings are sweet and very funny at times.
I truly hope the author continues her excellent work because there are more things to develop in this storyline. I adore that the Emperor as well as the President of the U.S.A are honorable and have morals and values.
Yes these are Alien love stories, but good reads.

Reese Payne has been compiling information on what the neuro implants have done to her team and many others in the military. Problem is each person has died. The implant has cause major issues. She is running out of time and needs help to get off Earth before the government stops her. A member of her team hears the call and requests assistance from the Warborne crew. T’Raal has something he hasn’t told Red about himself. When Eris asks for help to extract her old Commander, T’Raal doesn’t even blink. But to get on Earth and out is going to be tough. And worse, he may need the help of the Emperor.

This one is an eye opener. We learn a great deal about T’Raal as well as what Emperor Daaynal K’Saan has to do with everything. Reese is fighting for the rights of veterans and the what was done to her crew with the implants. I have to say this story hits home. In real time, our vets are being treated like they have fake issues. They definitely need care by the government, since they served with their lives. For Reese and her crew, they were being eliminated one by one to silence them. Even worse, false accusations are created. This story starts with an extraction then learning to trust and finding love. I’m glad that T’Raal finally found his mate. We also have a side story if you read the bonus. We have a new crew coming up in Blood Core.

The Warborne is definitely one of my favorite series. Love all the characters. T’Raal and Reese are a good match. I’m happy his mate is a strong woman. I was very happy to see President Murphy and the Emperor in this story. They always bring excitement to the story. I still do not like jumping around from series to series. I forget the players. I found myself struggling to remember who belong to which mate. Except for Red, Sparky and Fin. Unforgettable and funny. Also, there was a lot of repetition throughout the story. Also weird was a segment where T’Raal and Reese were in the galley having tea and was interrupted by Red about bad mercenaries intercepting them. He told Red to wake everyone. I thought they would be preparing for battle, but the next chapter was a dream sequence with Reese and her teammates heading into a trap. The previous chapter forgotten. No mention of the other mercenaries at all. It was almost like Mina forgot her thought process. Weird. With the weirdness and repetition aside, I did enjoy the story. I suspect we’re headed back to the mate program. Still miss the original series.

The Warborne are a special bunch.
Not just because of their reputation.
Not only because they are mercenaries.
Their just a remarkable bunch of misfits.
And now we have a new addition to the bunch.
Captain Reese Payne is being hunted.
She's trying to draw attention to the wrong done to herself and others in her unit.
But the powers that be want her voice silenced.
They don't want Reese spreading her message or her evidence.
Reese plays the last card available to her and seeks help because she knows they are coming for her.
Luckily, one of her own Tank, aka Eris is part of the Warborne and ask their fearless leader TRaal to extract Reese.
TRaal agrees without hesitation.
TRaal has had an air of mystery surrounding him.
He's sat by patiently as his crew have found their better halves, now it's his turn.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review.

When all seems lost, hope is the only thing that drives us forward, and Reese Payne held fast to this. In her pursuit of justice by exposing the harm done to the veterans, Reese had become an overwhelming force unwilling to give up her fight for her life and the lives of others. In a powerful emotional struggle, T'Raal made peace with himself and faced a dreaded decision. Wow! What a fight against the corporate system! It made me question the reality of humankind. A couple of times, my eyes misted with the narrations and descriptions that kept me glued to the reading, fearing for the protagonists. I liked Reese Payne's strength, her skills, and her commitment to exposing the implant malfunctions and the damage inflicted on the veterans. I enjoyed this story, which featured lots of action, intense, suspenseful situations, strong emotions, danger, romance, and passion.

Worth the Wait

I really liked this book it told the story of Reese and T’Raal. Reese is a human living on earth who is former military and is having extreme medical problems brought on by a defective implant. When Reese sends out a call for help from anyone on her former military team, it gets intercepted by her former teammate, who is now part of the Warborne. T’Raal leads the Warborne and she old teammate and T’Raal go to rescue Reese.
Reese and T’Raal have immediate chemistry, and he wants to do all he can to help her, but he has secrets of his own. I love the interaction between the main characters and between the whole team you could tell they were all family. I was happy to see T’Raal get his romance. These two were perfect together.

T’Raal has been such an extraordinary character and we have waited so long for his story, this tale does not disappoint. Reece’s strength and endurance are so admirable and I think truly indicative of our female soldiers in real life. I love that the Lathar know their mates at first sight, not love but a connection is made and I think Reese even felt it a bit. Reece is enveloped in the found family on the Sprite and these supporting characters who have already found their HEAs feel like old friends. Lastly I appreciate that the angst in this story is not between the HH/hh but from the big bad corporation, mostly. Battle action, a well built sci-fi world, and a sweet sexy romance make this read unputdownable. Highly recommend!

T'Raal has secrets but he knows family. So when a member of his crew makes a request he is there. He never expected to find his future.
Alien Mercenary's Wife is the latest in Mina Carter's Lathar Mercenaries Waterborne series. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know T'Raal better. He looks out for his crew and his willingness for them was put on full display in this story. Reese does the same for her people. Only difference is she lacks political power to protect them. I love that against overwhelming odds Reese makes the hard decisions. I love that T'Raal supports them even as he despises her options. I love how T'Raal and Reese are together. Finding a way to stay together is going to be a problem but I love the journey Ms. Carter takes them on to their happily ever after.

Worth it

I've, or we have, waited a very long time for this story and the one to follow that will resolve the emperor's match. I'm glad that T'Raals story has finally been told, and I've enjoyed the unveiling. So will the match be with Mason? Or another lucky lady. I'm voting for Mason as the Lathar have a history of falling for women in the military.

And thank you Mina Carter for sharing the plight of our veterans, who still have to battle to get the benefits they've earned. Throwing in the power of corporations that operate against the people's interests is also a timely warning in today's fight to stop Dark money in our politics. Bless you ❤️

We finally have T'Raal's story and it definitely was worth the wait. Reece and T'Raal really were perfect together. I loved their chemistry. Reece was such a strong woman with so much endurance. Together they had to fight the corporation to try and get justice for their greed and mistreatment of soldiers. So heartbreaking :( I do love that the Lathar know their mates on sight and really couldn't wait to see T'Raal's romance unfold. Expect to get caught up in the intense plot, emotions, action, battles, hot chemistry and a sweet but spicy romance that leads to a fab HEA. So good and I can't wait for the next book :D

Wasn't expecting that!

***Spoilers***
Long lost princes, the government giving out defective equipment, murder & mayhem oh my! I read anything attached to this author's name so I might be biased. Reese is a strong MC with a take no prisoners attitude. I'm glad the fearless leader of the Warborne finds a worthy mate, even happier that the emperor looks like he's gonna find his groove. I was getting increasingly worried about him, may his future be filled with more spice, passion, babies & love than he can stand. Also, if his son T'Raal is 150 years old how old is he. Just a random thought. Loved the book I think you will too.

Book 7 of the Lathar Mercenaries: Warborne series and it did not disappoint. T'Raal character has always fascinated me and with the secret that he has been hiding it just made him more likable. Reese is running out of time and when she is rescued by the mercenaries so gets the help she needs and an unexpected attraction to T’Raal. As the danger intensity so does their chemistry and when he has the chance to save her, his secret is revealed. What happens next was an exciting add to the series. I enjoyed the action packed storyline with the delicious heat level that ends with a HEA. Can’t wait for more of this series!

I love it, I love it, and I did not see that coming. T'Raal is the leader of the Warborne, a mercenary crew. One of his crew members tells him that she needs help rescuing a former commander that is looking help and he agrees to lend a hand. Reese used to be a Tank Commander and received implants to run the tanks. Now years later the implants are killing her and the company responsible wants her and the other survivors silenced. As the assassins close in Reese sends a SOS hoping someone can help. Can T'Raal and his crew save her in time? I read an arc of this book and this is my review.

Reese is dying from implants she had to run her tank for serving Earth and is trying to get recognition for she and her unit for benefits but someone doesn't want this to happen. She calls for help and finds she's on the Warborne's ship, whose captain is T'Raal, since the help came from a crew member. Things go from here with lots of twists and turns in this exciting action romance. It was wonderful to visit with the members again and see how they are doing as they all work to help Reese. Another fabulous book from Mina Carter!!

WOW!!

This series and this book have my enthusiastic recommendation. Mina Carter's books are always fun to read, but her Lathar series are definitely my favorite. And of her Lathar series, the Warborn series is a favourite as well. T'Raal had a more "interesting" past than I was quite expecting, but it was so much fun to finally uncover his secret. Reece is a good match for him. The Sprite and its Warborn crew is always so fun to spend time with. They are going to need a bigger ship soon. I am so, so, so excited to read Daaynal's story hopefully very soon.

Wow, this book was SO GOOD! I made the mistake sf starting it after dinner, and I couldn’t put it down! Reece was a fabulous character, her story, and her comrades, was heartbreaking, and her fight for justice just made you want to cry and rage. This sort of corruption and corporate lawyers just resonated with me. Traal is fabulous and what a twist to the story - I would give this more than five stars if I could

T'Raal get's his story. Turns out his past was quite the surprise. For being mercenaries, the Warborne sure do spend a lot of time rescuing people. When Reese calls Eris for help, the Warborne step in to help her.

Reese is a strong woman. She is putting up a fight against the corporations that created defective enhancements that are killing her and other veterans. No matter what, she keeps fighting.

They are a perfect couple.

Excellent book

Great story and a must read only issue (sort of spoiler alert) was with the mention of blood Core Ships running intercept courses. Causing a call to wake everyone they're about to have company. This is at the end of chapter 10. Chapter 11 starts with Reese having a bad dream and the blood core ships are never mentioned again. I even went back thinking I'd accidentally skipped ahead on my kindle. The rest of the story procedes with on other issues.

The wait for T'Raal is finally over! T'Raals' book was absolutely everything!!! I cannot explain all the feels this book gave me. The big reveal...OMG OMG OMG!! This is a must-read, especially if you've been following this series from the very beginning. The ending about killed me. This book was a great wrap-up for the Warborne, and I am positive that we will see them make cameo appearances in other upcoming books. Thank you, Mina, for another 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read!!!

This is yet another amazing read. The storyline is intense. Throughout this read, I had many emotions. Parts where steam was coming out of my ears and my blood boiling. For Reese, the fight is everything. She is a true leader. The complexity of this story is unsettling, to say the least. However, the impact delivered is phenomenal.

This is a must-read. Impeccable characters that are dedicated, annoying, and funny. But most of all, the comradery is bountiful. I loved this addictive story. It had the right amount of sass and romance to keep the fire going 🔥💜

Mina, I am really looking forward to the next book 💜!

Passion and the unending drive to do right by the people who become your family is how T'Raal meets Reese literally under fire.
Both are loyal to the core and have many secrets between them but will do what it takes no matter the consequences or risk to themselves.
So many emotional pulls and laugh out loud moments.
This must-read stays in your heart's memory
