Every time I moved too far, something pulled. Not physically. Worse. Existentially. Like the universe had reached past the veil, sunk its claws into the meat of my ribs, and stitched me to her, this pink-haired mortal trainwreck with blood on her hands and leftover glitter on her shoes. A girl who looked like a haunted doll and smelled like drugstore pumpkin, vanilla, and graveyard dirt. Like she was my goddamn center of gravity. Disgusting.
“You stay within ten steps. You let me pick the exits. If you want me, need me, say my name and I’ll come.”
“Like a dog?”
“Like a gun,” he said, almost gentle. “Loaded and pointed wherever you want.”
I should’ve walked away. I nodded instead.
