Out of the Wilderness: 31 Devotions to Walk with God Through Your Hardest Seasons

Rate this book
The creators of the wildly popular Girls Gone Bible podcast walk alongside you in your hardest seasons, with daily encouragement to reconnect with God and his Word to bolster your faith.

When you find yourself in a wilderness season, it can feel as if God has abandoned you. Angela Halili and Arielle Reitsma, creators and hosts of the Girls Gone Bible podcast, learned through their own struggles that the hardest parts of your journey might just be where you draw closest to God—and where you discover your greatest sense of purpose and joy.

In this encouraging devotional, Ang and Ari share stories from their spiritual journeys, enriched by Scripture, biblical insights, and guided prayers. With the same authenticity that makes Girls Gone Bible so popular, Out of the Wilderness explores

• what it means to find our identities in Christ
• why surrendering to God brings our greatest sense of security
• how to let go of the mistakes made in the past
• ways God uses wilderness seasons to draw us closer to him
• how to find God’s comfort in loneliness and loss

Out of the Wilderness contains thirty-one devotions for all the moments you seek God but feel like he doesn’t hear you. Join Ang and Ari in finding the peace, hope, and connection that only a relationship with God can bring.

How I Read It:📱

This devotional is not anything like I expected. It’s a beautifully written devotional that uses Ang and Ari’s stories/experiences to guide Christians on prayer and becoming closer to God. The devotions are meaty, they’re not short, but they’re great and informative. My favorite part of the devotional are the prayers - they’re all amazing and better help you understand how to pray, which is great for newer and practicing Christians alike.

Out of the Wilderness is everything I hoped it would be, raw, faith-filled, and beautifully human.

I’ve been a listener of the Girls Gone Bible podcast for a while, and Angela and Arielle have become such a comforting presence in my life.

Before I had found my own faith community, their voices made me feel seen and connected to something greater.

As a small business owner, I used to be so hesitant to share my faith publicly, worried that I might lose clients, friends, or opportunities.

But hearing their honesty, boldness, and love for Jesus reminded me that it’s okay to stand firm in who I am. Their words have truly helped me feel confident living my faith out loud.

Angela’s vulnerability about general anxiety, health anxiety, panic disorder, and OCD resonated so deeply with me.
Knowing I’m not alone in those struggles, and hearing how she’s walked through them with God’s grace, gave me so much comfort and hope.

This book feels like sitting down with two friends who understand, encourage, and point you back to truth every single time.
If you’ve ever felt afraid to speak your faith or have battled your mind, Out of the Wilderness will remind you that you’re not alone and that healing and peace are possible.

It’s such a great devotional-style read that encourages you to pause, reflect, and tap into your own relationship with God.
It doesn’t just tell you what to believe, it helps you feel closer to Him, right where you are.

As one who was only vaguely aware of the authors and their podcast, I was both impressed by their passion but also a little held off by the constant centering of their own lives and interpretations. That said, the audience will likely be self-selecting, so this will not matter to established followers. There is strong foundation, but the insights are on the lighter side, and though there is scriptural grounding there is a missed opportunity in not making the effort to relate principles to more diverse life experiences. The short chapters do bring an enhanced accessibility, as does their vulnerability, and the toggle back to the reader at each chapter's close with a "your turn" practicality works well.

One of the most noticeable threads woven throughout this devotional is its recurring focus on mental health and, at points, substance use. While these are important topics, the way these themes are handled often fell short. Rather than offering nuanced support, compassionate guidance, or even thoughtful theological exploration, the writers frequently default to the idea that one can simply “pray it away.”

While prayer can absolutely be meaningful and powerful, this repeated suggestion becomes frustrating and dismissive. Mental health challenges and substance use disorders are complex, multifaceted issues that require understanding, support, and professional care. Reducing them to something that can be solved through sheer spiritual effort not only minimizes the lived reality of those who struggle but can even contribute to shame when prayer alone doesn’t create change.

By the end of the devotional, the repetition of this message became downright annoying.

I'm a big fan of Girls Gone Bible. Watching young ladies lead this new generation into the word is inspirational and so very exciting. Sharing their heartfelt stories, Angela and Arielle, start each devotional with a personal, heartfelt story that details their own struggle while in the wilderness season.

Each devotional is both strongly Christ and scripture centered and focuses on finding our own unique relationship with Him. Ang and Ari explain the importance of a deep connection with Him and how to let go of our pasts in order to draw closer to Him.

I can’t wait to get a physical copy of this inspiring 31 day devotional and plan on sharing with my loved ones and bible study group.

I love short devotionals like this one because it is a simple way to get into the correct headspace when entering the secret place with Jesus.

This devo I think would be great for fresh Christians who are just starting to know Jesus. It’s thoughtful, relatable and real. It’s like taking to a sister.

However if you’ve been Christian for a while and are looking for something with a bit more meat or a challenge then I would get more of a study type devotional, but this book definitely can touch anyone!

A great devotional book- however I feel I’m a little too old for some of the personal stories and would have benefited more in my 20’s. I was able to take their personal testimonies and connect them to applicable situations in my life… but I would have related TO their personal testimonies about 8 years ago. I will be passing this onto someone younger I know who could really benefit from it in her season of life. Overall, a great read that got me back into scripture and daily devotionals… even if it took me 6 months to get through 31 days- I had it mixed in a rotation.

I love GGB!
Ang and Ari have inspired, and motivated, me to get back into reading the word of God.
This devotional makes me not feel alone, and makes me feel seen.
The enemy tries to isolate us and Ar and Ang, being so vulnerable, reminds us of who we are in Jesus!

Wow, this book was Soo good. In a way it taught “basic” or key points in living for Jesus but then brought it so much deeper with personal testimonies and scriptures. I would recommend this to any and everyone but especially newer believers. So beautiful 🤩 thank you Ange and Ari!

I liked it!!! I did have an issue with Arielle mentioning a female “pastor”, but other than that, it was encouraging!! I especially loved the prayers.
