Charlie is trying to hold everything together while the pressure keeps building, and seeing her vulnerability made her feel so real to me. Watching her slowly learn to be kinder to herself was one of my favorite parts of the story.
And then there’s Taio.
This man completely stole the show. I’m serious. Taio is attentive, thoughtful, and the way he sees Charlie is so genuine. The moment he steps between her and the chaos around her told me everything I needed to know about him. The way he notices her, understands her, and shows up when things get overwhelming I loved it so much. He’s perfect, I can’t. 🥹🥹🥹🥹
And let’s not forget he reads romance books AAAAA (sometimes even to her), builds her a blanket fort to help her sleep, I’m telling you, this man is the greenest flag that could ever exist.

Their relationship felt natural and sweet, and I loved the communication between them. Their moments together had this quiet intimacy that made me root for them so hard from the start.
I can’t wait for the upcoming releases every character in this series is just so interesting and I’m HERE for it.

one thing about me is i absolutely ADORE kay coves writing. this series has been so swoony and so funny, i could not get over taio and charlie.
honestly i dont think there has been a day since i’ve finished reading this that i DONT think about their chaotic meet cute/disaster. 😂
entertainment industry books (mainly music related) arent typically my go to reads, mostly because the MC usually just has a HORRIBLE team and no one looking out for her and it just raises my BP for no good reason lol however, i was really pleasantly surprised by charlie’s team. i thought it was going to go in the typical money hungry “we know whats best and you’ll listen to us” when its really the worst thing for them and they made me eat my words and proved me wrong real quick which i LOVED.
charlie and taio were just the perfect fit for one another. the way taio began to pull her out of her shell and helped give her a safe place to experiment and experience things and the way charlie helped him out of a really shitty life that would have been his death with how overworked and guilt ridden he way, she gave him a really comfortable place to land emotionally. this book was just so soft and intimate.
the only reason this was not a 5 star review even though charlie and taio were a 5 star couple is because of the dramatic side plots, i of course know they’re necessary plot devices but they just threw me out of the story more often than not; i really hated to see them be treated that way.
over all i am very excited to see whats next in this series, celeste and saylor are two side characters i’ve been really excited about individually so i cannot wait to see what kind of chaos and fun gray area brings!!

This one surprised me in the best, quietest way.
It pulled me in and only got deeper as it went on. I usually gravitate toward more spicier reads, so the fact that this one completely held my attention with such a strong slow burn really stood out to me. And when those moments finally land, they feel natural and well-earned.
Taio and Charlie were the heart of it all. Both are trying to rebuild after messy family situations, and watching them choose themselves and each other felt really genuine. Taio is just soft in the best way, thoughtful, steady, and quietly romantic without even trying. Their dynamic, from that chaotic first meeting to something much more real, had such natural chemistry, balancing tension, humour, and vulnerability in a way that felt effortless.
I did struggle a bit with the outside storylines at first since some relationships felt confusing and not fully explained. It took a little time to settle into the world, but once the focus stayed on them, I was completely invested. It may not have fully surpassed my favourite from the author, but it still delivered a heartfelt, emotional romance that really worked for me. A solid, emotional read that I’d still recommend.

Charlie's music career was on a declining trend after having a public meltdown while being on stage during one of her tour concerts. Her PR team thought that being in a fake relationship with handsome Hollywood star Grayson Hemsley will resolve her problems, but there was no chemistry between them when the cameras were off, therefore nothing more happened between them. Charlie believed that maybe her lack of experience might be the reason why her music career didn't thrive the way it supposed to, being trapped in the teenage bubble she has created over the years. When Charlie bumped into the opportunity of having someone to help her learn some things about intimacy, she jumped in for that opportunity. But to her surprise the escort, Taio Wilkes, will become that one person who will make her feel safe and seen, always being considerate and very thoughtful. Only that closeness will get them into other problems. To solve them, Taio had become one of her bodyguards, but that closed proximity will definitely make things even more challenging for them, to ignore all the things they were feeling in their hearts.
I honestly loooved this story and characters so, so much!! It just clicked with me so, so well and I couldn't get enough of them! Super addicting!🩵 I was instantly hooked by this story, understanding Charlie so well when it came to her struggles. It was suuuper sweet to see how she got attached to the man who simply appeared in her life and how intense their connection was. Taio has simply conquered my heart by his way of being!!🥰 He was suuper attentive and he just knew how to ease down Charlie's insecurities. He had that mesmerizing confidence and tenderness which was for sure something which was hard to ignore and that made me like him so much! Taio had his fair share of issues around him, which made him reluctant when it came to relationships, but something has definitely changed since the moment he first saw Charlie. On the other side, Charlie had to process her insecurities and to find a way of diminishing them in order to be at peace with herself. She also needed to find a way to successfully rebrand herself, in order to become the performer she always wanted to be.
I must say that Stephen Dexter has melted my heart with this performance, loooving the way he managed to emanate all that confidence, that emotion and masculinity Taio owned and how he made me feel all that sensuality and chemistry between him and Charlie. Isabelle Turner has definitely made an amazing job herself, expressing so well all that emotion and all those insecurities Charlie had in her heart. I truly felt that angst from this point of view, adoring how both Stephen and Isabelle succeed in making me feel that raw and unfiltered connection between Charlie and Taio and everything that came with their secret and very forbidden love story.
This book was suuuch a nice surprise to me, falling in love with everything about this story. I definitely resonated so well with these characters, their amazing and instant chemistry and their complex struggles which have defined them and which they were trying to overcome.

Charlie is one of the biggest pop stars in the world and currently on another world tour, running on fumes and trying to be everything that her label has helped build her up to be - an icon. When Taio takes a last minute late night call for a job, he ends up at the wrong hotel and in Charlie's suite. With her world in crisis mode and now a handsome stranger trying to infiltrate her safe space, their meet cute is one for the books! But Charlie and Taio instantly hit it off and have a strange kinship with one another that neither can explain. When she ends up in the headlines again because of his surprise visit, he takes on a contract to be her bodyguard the rest of the tour to quell the rumor mill. But their connection cannot be denied and while they galivant from city to city on this tour, the lives they left behind are still in motion and finding a balance between the two to make way for something together becomes harder than either anticipated.
I LOVED THIS STORY. The way Charlie and Taio are kindred spirits and are able to see and understand each other in ways no one else can makes their relationship so special. They are both stubbornly independent people who are determined to persevere and make everything happen by themselves. Feeling like the world rests on their shoulders and overwhelmed with the weight and responsibility, they are able to recognize that trait in each other and be the support for the other that they need to move forward and thrive. I love their banter and their chemistry and I love how unapologetically they flirt and with not much resistance they lean into their connection and become essential to one another fairly quickly. That connection is what allows them to have faith in each other when things are rocky and uncertain. Their love and support for each other gave them the space to begin healing from their pasts and find solace in a future with one another.
I LOVED THIS STORY. The way Charlie and Taio are kindred spirits and are able to see and understand each other in ways no one else can makes their relationship so special. What really stood out to me was how honest Taio and Charlie were with each other right from the beginning. There was no pretending, no holding back, they just were, and that authenticity made their connection feel so real.
Taio completely stole my heart with the way he showed up for Charlie. Watching her navigate those overwhelming emotions and moments where she felt like she was at her breaking point was heavy, but he never wavered. He gave her the space to feel while still being her steady support, and I loved that balance so much.
And Taio’s dad? Yeah… he can absolutely kick rocks and stay in jail forever. No notes.
What made this story land so well for me was how it all came together in the end. Seeing both of them fully embrace who they are without apology felt like such a powerful payoff. It wasn’t just about their relationship, it was about growth, healing, and choosing yourself too.

"Paper Hearts" was my very first Kay Cove book, and it definitely won’t be my last! A friend of mine (Shout out @PazandPages) has spoken so highly of Kay’s books that I finally decided to give one a try and now I completely understand why she kept recommending her.
One of my favorite things about this book was getting to see Charlie simply be a good human. From knowing all the little details about her team and their families to wanting to refund the guests who came to her show after she had to cancel mid-performance, those moments really stood out to me. There’s something so relatable about an FMC who genuinely cares about the people around her. A good human will always make me like a character more, and Charlie absolutely won me over. Also, a character who just wants to curl up in bed over going out... just gets me.
And then there’s Taio. Despite his job as an escort, I loved how much he tried to do the right thing. I especially appreciated the way he continued to stand by his dad despite the deplorable things his father had done, and how quickly he was willing to throw caution to the wind when it came to Charlie’s safety and happiness. His actions really showed the kind of person he was underneath everything else.
My only real “not so favorite” part of the book was the spicier scenes but that is 100% based on my personal preference and not at all on how they were written. The “virgin FMC and he teaches her everything” trope just isn’t one that I particularly enjoy, so those scenes weren’t necessarily for me. But if you love that trope, I can absolutely see you enjoying that aspect of this book!
Overall, Charlie and Taio had great chemistry, and I loved watching their relationship develop through the story. This was such a sweet, keep-you-guessing, and unique romance with characters I genuinely enjoyed getting to know.
Needless to say, Kay Cove is officially on my author list now!

I loved getting Charlie from Selfie in the Lessons in Love series. Watching her journey in this book was honestly my favorite part. Yes, it’s a romance but this story goes deeper than that. Seeing Charlie grow from an unhappy, struggling pop star into someone who truly embraces her authentic self was everything.
And then there’s Taio… the perfect book boyfriend. Not only is he an amazing bodyguard, but he genuinely sees Charlie for who she is and supports her without expecting anything in return. He’s kind, patient, and just an all around good person, even to those who don’t deserve it.
I also appreciated that while there is some spice, it didn’t overpower the story. It instead added to their emotional connection rather than taking away from it.
Overall, this was another win for me, and I’m so grateful I got the chance to read it early. Now I’ll just be patiently waiting for Grey Area!

I would happily read this book over and over and over again just experience it for the first time, I love Charlie, i see parts of myself in her and it just made me connect so much more to the story, and pls can we collectively protective taio he’s perfect 😭🫶🏼

I will forever love the story Kay puts out! They are raw, funny, emotional, surprising, and overall a fantastic reading experience! Paper Hearts brings us the emotions of tough family history, the pressures of fame, the tension of a budding romance, and the humor of a man denying he loves his stray cat.
So for those of you that didn’t realize it yet, this is the same Charlie from Selfie! So our little princess is all grown up and living out the popstar life! I LOVE that we got to see more of her story after childhood, it makes all the series blend so beautifully together and gives us those full circle moments. In Selfie we knew that Charlie had a beautiful voice that could captivate the world, now in Paper Hearts she does just that. In this book Charlie is a 23 year old popstar that is struggling with living life and having a successful career. Throughout this book, we see Charlie struggle with worrying about the opinions of the world while staying true to herself. I was thrilled when she started to do what was right for HER, not for PR, or for anyone else. She was already an amazing person, and I was enthralled with her journey to being a better person to herself. Charlie deserves all things wonderful in this world.
When it comes to Taio, he is just a giant green flag. Respectful, protective, supportive, a reader, and is in tune with Charlie as a whole. I knew when reading Role Play that Taio would win us over even more in his own book, and boy was I right! Like Charlie, Taio has his own family dynamic that can cause some uncertainty in his life. He does his best to keep everyone happy and taken care of, even at this own expense. It made me so happy that he started to put himself first and began to live his life without the familial pressures that were never his to bear.
Together, Charlie and Taio are a perfect couple. Charlie brings light and peace into Taio‘s life, bringing with it immense joy. Potato, he make sure Charlie is seen and cared for like never before. He understands her like no one else does and provides her the support she needs without even asking. They fit together perfectly and bring out the best in one another.
Now, for the storyline, it was a roller coaster of great joy and difficult times. For Charlie, specifically, as I mentioned, we see the struggles she faces when it comes to being in the public eye. But we also get to understand the deep emotions her family’s past affects her life. Together, it causes a few obstacles that Charlie eventually overcomes to be the best performer she possibly could be, and live her happiest, truest life. Taio’s story, we see him learn to not carry the weight of his father‘s mistakes. he was bearing the burden that was never his; Taio has such a big heart that he wanted to right all the wrongs he possibly could, but it was draining him in every aspect of his life. It was amazing to watch both of these characters work through these obstacles and overcome them more than they ever thought possible. This book really shows that with the right people in your life, you could have everything you ever wanted. No pressures, struggles, emotions, or outside opinions could ever get between you, your love, and your best self.
Overall, I adore this book and need book three asap! I am absolutely devouring this Off The Books series and never want it to end! Do yourself a favorite and go read this beauty immediately!

This starts with such a memorable and hilariously awkward meet cute! It sets the tone for this fantastic story.
I completely adored this story, Charlie and Taio are both such wonderfully complex, compassionate and endearing characters.
Taio is a down on his luck Escort, he comes from a family that was wealthy until his father’s illegal business dealings brought shame on the family and bankrupted them. Taio has a big heart, he is trying to do his best by the victims of his father, as well as visiting his father in prison, as every other family member has cut his father off.
I felt so much sympathy for Taio and I respect his deep moral values so much. He’s such a sweetie in a GORGEOUS, masculine package.
Charlie had a bit of a tough childhood, a tragic loss and stressful life situations, but things turned around in her teens. She has a strong relationship with her unconventional family, and they support her as she travels the world on her major stadium tour. She’s a current Pop Star Princess selling out tickets around the world. At only 23 years old she’s feeling weary and a bit unsettled about her lifestyle.
Taio begins traveling with Charlie on her tour to help with optics after some paparazzi issues because of a photo of Charlie and him create a scenario that hurts her image. He’s “acting” as a bodyguard which gives them a lot of alone time together.
They get to know each other fairly quickly and they have great chemistry and they “click” so well. I adore their banter, their conversations, both funny and emotional. The trust that develops made me swoon over their developing relationship.
It’s a steamy, funny, touching story with great character development and growth for both of them. It’s such an entertaining story with so much heart and super lovable characters. I absolutely adore them and their beautiful romance.

I was so excited to pick this up after reading the e-ARC of Role Play last year. Taio’s little cameos in that book really intrigued me, so I couldn’t wait to get to his story! Kay Cove has a talent for writing unique storylines - some of which you wouldn’t usually gravitate towards, but end up enjoying anyway. That originality is exactly what drew me back to this series.
Taio and Charlie’s meet-cute was chaotic, awkward and slightly messy, but also really heartwarming. I loved how it highlighted that the first time you meet someone won’t always be perfect. Their relationship gradually developed throughout the story and it felt natural and genuine. Taio was a complete walking green flag - a romance reader waiting for his own HEA, attentive, protective and shows how much he cares through his actions ✅
The humour in this book was also done really well - I found myself laughing out loud at certain moments 🤣
However, there were some parts of the story that I found rather confusing. Charlie’s family dynamics could have been explained a bit better, especially her relationship with her father figure/brother-in-law and her best friend/adoptive sister. I also would’ve liked a bit more explanation when it came to the backstory involving her biological father and mother as it felt slightly rushed towards the end.
Finally, I would’ve loved to see more of Taio’s friends, Forrest and Saylor, especially after we got to know them a bit in Role Play.
Overall, this was a great continuation of the series and I really enjoyed it. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the stories will go next with the other characters!

Update: I listened to this audiobook as an ALC, and loved the narration! I loved the story just as much as the first time I read it, and the duet narration was fantastic!

Kay Cove does it again! I was anxiously awaiting this book after reading Role Play, and I am happy to say, this book continues a great series! Who doesn't love a bodyguard trope? And while I usually abhor miscommunication, this book started out with the funniest miscommunication ever!
FMC Charlie is a mega pop star who is dealing with a little bit of an identity crisis. After finding out her mother lied to her about her father's lack of involvement in her life, she spirals into a mental health crisis. MMC Taio is the son of a convicted white-collar felon and he has turned to escorting to earn enough money to support his father's legal fees. A single auto-correct mistake lands Taio at the wrong hotel and he meets Charlie who confesses all of her pent up feelings and frustrations within the first five minutes of meeting. She also lets it slip that she's still a virgin at 23. The two end up talking (no, seriously) and share a hug on the balcony of Charlie's penthouse suite of the hotel and a paparazzo snaps a photo which puts Charlie into hot water since she supposedly has a boyfriend (it's really a publicity stunt to boost both party's status). Quickly, Taio finds himself gainfully employed as Charlie's bodyguard to throw the press off their scent, but the two find themselves falling for each other quickly.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

🎧 What a wonderful audiobook! I love when a narrator can grasp me by the elbow and through me into the book with their voice and words, and these two did just that. Isabelle Turner and Stephen Dexter were PERFECT in their roles, brought this story and their characters to life, and had me hooked from the first sentences.
First of all, the meet cute for these two was absolutely HILARIOUS and had me giggling throughout the entire ordeal, and it just kept getting better from there!! I’ve never read a popstar x bodyguard romance and Taio & Charlie were the perfect intro into the trope.
Taio is a big teddy bear (who reads romance books!) and is so down BAD for Charlie, I was swooning nonstop! He is attentive and kind, and he steps up for Charlie, protecting her in more ways than as just her “bodyguard,” showing her what a man truly is.
And Charlie’s character was so complex with her raw emotion, inexperience, and the struggles she faces. She is so sweet and beautiful, working through the struggles of being a child star, but she does it with grace and tries so hard to stay true to herself.
Both characters came together PERFECTLY in this book. They had the best chemistry, banter, and a romance that rivals the movies.
I have loved Kay’s writing so much in the past and Paper Hearts lived up to my hype! One of my favorite aspects is always the emotional bits with family and then the beautiful found family moments we get as our characters grow. Charlie’s family life is rough around the edges and there were lots of secrets that she’s finding out, but the way she overcomes these revelations and fears caused by them was beautiful. And Taio! This man has his own family struggles and inner conflicts that he works through throughout this book and I felt SO bad for him with the guilt he held for other people’s mistakes.

Every time I read a Kay Cove book I am reminded how much I enjoy her writing. This book was both sweet and spicy. This series is so good I really enjoyed book one so I knew I wanted to continue the series and I am so happy I have.
Book two follows Charlie a pop princess that is dealing with finding out some information about herself and family while navigating fame. Taio is dealing with his own family troubles. His father is in prison and his mother has left the country. Taio is trying to make his father's wrongs right and this lands him smack in Charlie's path. I love these two together. Every time I read a Kay Cove book I am reminded how much I enjoy her writing. This book was both sweet and spicy. This series is so good I really enjoyed book one so I knew I wanted to continue the series and I am so happy I have.
Book two follows Charlie a pop princess that is dealing with finding out some information about herself and family while navigating fame. Taio is dealing with his own family troubles. His father is in prison and his mother has left the country. Taio is trying to make his father's wrongs right and this lands him smack in Charlie's path. I love these two together. Oh my goodness. This was such a cute book! I loved this one even more than I loved Role Play (book 1). Taio and Charlie are just endgame and I will take no criticism. Taio is one of the most caring MMCs I've read and the way him and Charlie just have instant connection when they meet is chef's kiss. They meet under some pretty interesting circumstances when Taio (the male escort) accidentally gets told the wrong address. I loved this scene and it just set up the rest of the book perfectly. The emotions that both of the characters go through was also done really well. Charlie doesn't think she's enough, Taio shows her she is. Taio is dealing with a scandal and Charlie shows him it wasn't his fault and his worth as well. Also the reasoning behind the title is just so sweet and I loved reading the journey that comes from them. Highly recommend this book and series for anyone who loves found family, secret relationships, virgin heroines and a popstar x body guard dynamic. You'll be swooning with Taio, I PROMISE YOU!

Charlie and Taio were really sweet, cute and fun. The book was lighthearted and pretty cute. Their first meeting was so much fun and probably one of my favorites scenes.
He was amazing- a romance reader and a cat dad? Match made in heaven. Black cat was probably my favorite character from the book.
With that said I kinda expected more from this book. I needed more spice and waiting till the 70% was kind of unnecessary for me. I wish we saw more of Taio’s friends and even some of his friendship with Sora. Him being a reader was and not even having a conversation with his author friend was a bummer.
The ending felt kinda of rushed and him having a job in publishing was a surprise for me.
I know the next book is about Rina and i am wondering how everything is going to end up.

I didn’t think I could enjoy this series more than I did with Role Play, but this was such a fun read!!! 🥰 Taio completely stole the show in every way possible. His backstory took me by surprise, and I loved seeing how far he has come. He was the perfect addition to Charlie🩷

Off the Books series continues and this one will melt your heart even more than the first book in the series! Taio is the mushy hunk made from dreams and Charlie is the absolute sweetheart you'll root from the very beginning. Their chance encounter meeting had me cracking up seeing it slowly unfold in all its hysterical awkwardness! Of course Black Cat was the humorous side kick that provided the cherry on top to the whole story.
Even beyond all the expected (and nicely delivered) spice I loved the storyline of them both working through their pasts to find their own version of self-love and boundaries for the hurdles offered up in each of their lives - whether that is craving the acceptance of fans, grieving the loss of a father-figure, or coping with the struggle of a terrible father. From beginning to end I enjoyed this story and look forward to the next book!

This book was an absolute rollercoaster ride of fun! If you're into the whole Pop Star/Bodyguard romance thing, you'll be in for a treat. I had such a blast reading it, especially spotting familiar faces from previous books. The adventure kept me on my toes, and I couldn't put it down! It’s like falling in love all over again—just with a bit more drama and a lot more laughs. What a great escape!

super cute rom-com book. it read like a movie that I would watch over and over again. Charlie is a pop singer who needs distraction and Taio is struggling male escort. One little mixup and he ends up pretending to be her bodyguard to save her reputation. Tension and a few months on the road and these can't avoid each other.
