This was an extremely comprehensive guide on wild basket weaving. This is by far the most instructive craft book that I have read. Every aspect of the craft is covered, from foraging, preparing, storing and actual projects. Additionally, it also covers the botanical aspect of each plant harvested and the properties of each. A wide variety of weaving patterns are covered as well. It is also very well organized and ensures that the reader can easily skip around to directly go through what they need. During each of the foraging sections, there is a list of projects covered that use that specific material like bark, vine, leaf etc. This is helpful in working on each aspect individually. It has enough material for all experience levels. I think some of the techniques can also be practiced with paper or wire/twine if natural materials cannot be foraged or for practice. It has detailed illustrations for each step of the process which makes things more clear. I'm super excited to get started on this craft. I would absolutely recommend this to any crafters out there.

The book clearly explains the tools needed for basket weaving and specifies which tools work best for different types of baskets and plant materials, which was very helpful and practical.
The book is organized in a logical way with a nice flow, starting with information about the plants you can harvest and even including a seasonal chart that shows the best times of year to harvest different materials. This was especially valuable because harvesting at the correct time is important not only for the quality of the weaving materials but also for the health of the plants. I also really appreciated that the book discusses harvesting ethics and emphasizes being mindful of the environment and ecosystem when gathering materials from nature.
I don’t personally have much experience with basket weaving, but this book made the process feel approachable and inspiring. It helped me start thinking about what plants I already have available in my own yard and how I can plan ahead by season to responsibly gather materials in the future. The seasonal information alone makes this a great resource for planning and preparing ahead of time.
The instructions and explanations were clear without being overwhelming, and there were plenty of photos to help guide the process. I felt like there was a good balance between written instruction and visual guidance, which would help readers successfully create the different basket styles and techniques included in the book.
The photos of the finished baskets were absolutely beautiful, and I especially liked that the book showed baskets being used in everyday life, which gave me new ideas for how baskets can be used beyond simple storage or decoration.
Overall, this book contains a lot of valuable information and covers a wide range of basket styles, techniques, and plant materials. I think it would be suitable for beginners who are just starting out as well as more experienced basket weavers who may want to learn new techniques or try working with different natural materials.
This is a book I will be looking to purchase to have on hand and reference as soon as it's available.

I just finished reading Weaving Wild Baskets: Techniques and Projects Using Foraged Leaves, Grasses, Vines, and Bark by Katie Grove, and it’s an absolute gem! Katie Grove does a fantastic job walking readers through everything they need to know, beginning with how to identify and harvest over 50 different plants—everything from leaves and grasses to vines and bark. She even includes a handy illustrated harvest calendar, which is perfect for planning your foraging trips throughout the year. That alone makes this book a standout resource, especially if you’re like me and new to basket making but eager to learn.
What really impressed me was how well-organized and accessible the book is. It starts by introducing the essential tools for basket weaving, clearly explaining which tools work best depending on the materials and the type of basket you want to create. That practical approach made me feel confident right away. The instructions for the 14 projects cover nine key techniques such as coiling, twining, and wickerwork, and they’re paired with step-by-step photos that make following along a breeze.

This is a wonderful, comprehensive book for anyone with a beginner or intermediate interest in creating baskets and pouches out of materials found in the wild. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐to Katie Grove for sharing what seems to be an immense amount of learned knowledge about materials and craftmanship. The photos throughout are absolutely beautiful and show the detail of all of the steps and the projects. Like a cookbook for basket making (if it included growing and harvesting the supplies!)
This hobby has always interested me and I will now look at the baskets in my home with a new eye of great appreciation for the work that has gone into making them. I am so impressed by the variety of materials that I can use to create as well! Another big plus for me is her discussion of using invasive species properly, addressing an issue of how to use things that exist but that we need to tear out.
Her environmental and meditative eye to the practice is wonderful and sets a great tone for the book. She also encourages respect and acknowledgement around Indigenous practices when creating.
This is definitely a book I will want to own so that I can refer to the steps for many of the projects that are listed with step by step instructions but also for the foraging and preparation steps. She provides charts of when best to harvest, what parts of each plant are best for us, how to dry, how to rehydrate for working and even gives some basic botany lessons on identifying the parts of plants.
The project pages gave me ideas that I had never even considered and I found myself showing them to my family as projects that I was excited to start creating.
One thing that I really appreciate about this book in my perspective as an under planner was the level of detail including tools and time that are provided, I would be going in with the knowledge that this is a multi step, long term project and that is the information everyone needs up front when starting new projects.
Be sure to check this one out if you need a new way to connect with the earth and use your hands to create, and give Weaving Wild Baskets a try! 🌾🧺

Weaving Wild Baskets is a tutorial and technique guide for weaving baskets utilizing found/foraged materials by Katie Grove. Due out 21st April 2026 from from Hachette on their Storey imprint, it's 320 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
Storey are well kn0wn for the quality of their DIY and crafts publications. This is a worthy entry into that lineup. It's a fine primer with step by step instructions and copious tutorial photographs which are clear and illustrative. The author has an upbeat and casual writing style which is easy to follow.
The introductory chapter includes a survey of styles, materials, terms, and tools with good clear photos of each. The next chapters progress through plant ID, techniques and weaving, processing materials, basket shapes and styles, and decorative features to incorporate. The second section of the book includes photo tutorials for 10 projects which are all beautiful and functional as well as decorative.
Each tutorial includes an introduction with finished measurements and special features in a header. Tools and supplies are listed bullet style in a sidebar (measurements are given in imperial (American) standard units). The step by step instructions are numbered sequentially. The book includes an index and abbreviated source links mostly slanted toward readers in North America, though a simple internet search will turn up tool suppliers everywhere.
Five stars. Well written, accessible for beginning to advanced basketweavers, useful, and appealing. It would be an excellent choice for public or secondary school library, crafters and studio/makers groups.

The first part of the book covers the various plants you can use, with separate chapters for each type: leaves, grasses and soft stems, vines, woody stems, wild fibres and bark. For each material type Katie explains how and when to collect and gives helpful instructions on preparation and storage.
The second section is on making wild baskets, covering ten different methodologies: cordage and braiding, coiling, looping, twining, weaving, diagonal plaiting, bark folding, ribbed baskets, random weave and wicker.
The instructions and explanations are clear and accompanied by plenty of good photos and some diagrams, providing inspiration for creativity and experimentation. It is notable for covering both what you should do, and equally helpfully some of the potential pitfalls and things not to do.
Overall a really comprehensive and clear manual that should be on every prospective basket maker's bookshelf.

Overview: I'm sure you've seen them. Nice hand-woven baskets, with a nice price tag. These beauties can easily cost a pretty penny. There surely has to be a way to recoup the cost somewhat. Mrs. Grove seems to have an answer. If you cannot afford a nice basket, why not make your own? This book boasts the ability to give you the foraging skills and step-by-step guides to makes the particular baskets. How does it work? Let's find out.
Dislikes: I'd have warned people away from using plants like dogbane. If it has bane in the title, it's poisonous to something.
Also, be careful if you are using roses for your baskets. Some people frown on any help when it comes to trimming their bushes.
Likes: I appreciate the way that Mrs. Grove attempted to encourage people to get outside, and slow down, if only for a little while.

Weaving Wild Baskests is a comprehensive guide to plants, foraging (or growing) basket material, preparation and of course weaving baskets made from found materials.
It has everything from plant identification, to harvesting, how to turn a leaf into fibres, and bark into a bag. Fileld with step by step instructions and comprehensive illustrations (especially for the identificationsection), this book is broken down into two sections plant/resource types, and then the weaving instructions. (**Note: The materials section is primarily for Northern Hemisphere audiences)
This covers everything from the ultimate basics like braided cords to coils, and twined and looped and plaited baskets, bags and sheathes and so much more. The instructions are incredible easy to follow, and it's utterly fascinating what can be made out of sticks, leavs and bark!.
I'll be getting a copy of this to look at in more depth and practice with found materials locally.

As someone who grew up in Guam, watching natives weave hats and bags and baskets from palm fronds, I thought this book would be right up my alley. The author is very detailed in the type of materials one could use, how to forge materials, etc. I was excited to know that I could use my iris after they flower to make baskets with, as well as other things I have in my yard. Including the weeds and those horrible ivies that choke out my trees. It gives me a reason to be more aggressive in getting them cut down. Overall, this book is well done and well explained. The author uses pictures and illustrations to help one understand, not just the technique, but the materials. There’s a lot more to learn in this book than just basket weaving. It’s a great reference source for being in nature and using things you wouldn’t have thought about before.

Another amazing nature craft, tapping into working with nature and your hands to weave useful new creations. This book is fully packed with information - everything from what and when to forage, to how to forage and store, and of course, how to weave it into masterpieces. What an amazing resource for the nature creatives. Beautiful images, very details instructions and step-by-step images. I quite enjoyed reading this after just having intuitively crafted a giant beehive structure out of grapevine. I now feel more confident in future structures, and look forward to leveraging all the vines growing in my yard for new creations.

This is a detailed guide on not only how to weave a variety of baskets, but to also forage and prepare materials. It seems like most of the process is in the preparation of the plant material. I liked the lists of the various suitable plants that can be used and tips on when to gather them. It seems like you'd need a good amount of room to be able to lay out all of the gathered plants out to dry for a while, that is if you've been able to find the ones suitable for a project. The actual weaving part looks fun. It's just all the prep that seems intimidating.

Este libro es extraordinario para quien ama las manualidades y lo holístico, muestra cómo tejer cestas con plantas silvestres, mostrándote el tipo de planta a usar, cómo hacerlo con madera, etc. Es un arte sin duda, y al leerlo inspira tanto que te motiva a tejer una cesta propia, por las fotos tan hermosas que maneja y los detalles paso a paso. Es como un libro de macramé paso a paso pero aquí incluye el cultivo y la recolección de los materiales. Es una nueva forma de reconectar con la tierra y usar la creatividad que impulsa a crear. A great book to get you started weaving baskets. Introduces you to various techniques using a range of materials, including leaves, roots, and bark, as well as, step by step instructions to basket projects. Includes information about harvesting and preparing the materials for weaving. I wish I had this book when I started my weaving journey; it would have saved me hours and hours of trial and error. A great book to add to your library!

This book makes me want to be the type of person who forages and whittles wood down to the correct size and in general just be more outdoorsy and creative. Unfortunately I'm not one of those people so I have to buy the materials to make these beautiful projects. So simple, basic and timelessly useful projects.

What an awesome how-to book!
From foraging, to preparing the materials to weaving a variety of baskets, the directions are clear and easy to follow with many, many photos to guide you in your efforts.
I'll be buying a copy of this for the library where I work, as well as my home craft library.

I was interested in this book for practical (foraging) reasons more than aesthetical, and I found lots of practical tips. It's very extensive, especially in prepping material, and this is of course very important. Excellent content and illustrations.
