Kieran Larwood is the author of Freaks, and was the winner of the Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition 2011. Kieran is one of only two male Reception class teachers on the Isle of Wight. His days mainly consist of singing nursery rhymes, tying shoelaces, trying to locate who has had an ‘accident’ by sense of smell alone, and vast, endless mountains of paperwork. Kieran graduated from Southampton University with a degree in English, and also did a foundation year at Falmouth College of Art. Ever since he first read The Hobbit at age six, he has been passionate about stories and storytelling. Kieran lives with his family on the Isle of Wight. It is his dream to write full time and leave the ‘accidents’ to someone else.
What worked: The plot moves very quickly, so it will keep the attention of young, emerging, and reluctant readers. The characters face many obstacles and dangerous creatures, although this part of the series offers new twists. This story finds Kit, Sandy, and Thorn on the last leg of the Dungeon Runners competition. They must finish in the top two places to be promoted to the Tryhard League (a new future book series?) or lose their hopes of being Dungeon Runners forever. In addition, this competition will be held in Vostovia, a land of vampires. Thorn is a vegan vampire, and this new setting provides complications for him. A bully from Kit’s past is on the third-place Trogton Terrors, and Kit’s sure the first-place Roost Raiders “earned” their position by cheating. Kit, Sandy, and Thorn form the team of Triple Trouble, and they’re a stark contrast from the other teams. Kit has the roles of leader and fighter, but he’s gotten this far with limited abilities and questionable bravery. His best assets are intelligence, luck, and compassion. Sandy is the team’s mage, even though she doesn’t know many spells. Plus, the spells she tries to cast rarely work the way she intended. Thorn is the healer, and he’s uncertain about returning to Vostovia. He’s afraid of what will happen if the other vampires find out he doesn’t drink blood anymore. They’ll surely be angry, and the consequences may result in the end of his eternal life. Readers can easily predict that his secret will eventually be revealed. What didn’t work as well: The book jumps right into the action, so readers need to have read the previous three books to understand what’s happening. There’s not enough character and plot development to help readers connect with the backstory and featured personalities. The final verdict: This is a fun series that features underdogs with admirable qualities. Their kindness and empathy for others make them unpredictable Dungeon Runners when contrasted with their ruthless, selfish, cheating competitors. I recommend this book for a wide range of young readers.
An easy five stars. This series is amazing and my daughter is obsessed.
I gulped this latest book down like a vampire with a vial of vintage troggle blood.
In this outing, Triple Trouble will enter the (un)deadly dungeon on Vostovia (vampire lands). If they don’t succeed in this round, they’ll lose out on a spot in the Tryhard League, but even worse, they’ll never be able to run another dungeon as the NDL is dissolving the Bottom Feeder League! High stakes indeed- just don’t say that around the vampires!
In the dark depths of the dungeon, Kit, Sandy and Thorn exhibit the progress they have made over the course of the season. Sword skills, courage, healing, team work…compassion. But in the highly competitive, potentially lethal world of dungeon running, is kindness a fatal flaw?
Triple Trouble’s friendship is tested in unprecedented ways. What would you be prepared to give up for your friends? And, the harder question: what would you be prepared to give up for your enemy?
Will the Roost Raiders romp to victory as unimpeded as in previous rounds? Will it all unravel for the Yarn Stormers? Will the Trogton Terrors finally show an ounce of humility? Will Thorn be able to hide his illegal veganism from the terrifying Countess? You’ll have to read it to find out!
Fun, accessible, thrilling, perfectly perilous for its readership! As ever the fangtastic illustrations by Joe Todd Stanton are the perfect complement to the writing.
I really enjoy this series! Fang Attack is a brilliant 4th book full of secrets, lies, vampires, snakes, cheating and friends! I’m very much looking forward to the next season of this. Really love Joe Todd Stanton’s illustrations in this!
