Iwan Ross grew up in a home marked by hardship, where books became his safest refuge. As a child, he often escaped to the small town library — a quiet sanctuary where stories offered the comfort, courage, and companionship the world around him often could not. Those early shadows shaped his imagination, giving rise to the vivid, uncanny worlds he writes today.
Diagnosed with Bipolar II later in life, Iwan discovered that the same inner world he once used to survive had become the source of his greatest strength: storytelling. Through the years he built a career in technology — from support technician to solutions engineer to technical writer — while never letting go of the one constant that carried him through every chapter of his journey: writing.
His debut novel, Elm Brook Manor, introduced readers to his signature style of supernatural suspense infused with emotion, mystery, and quiet resilience. Many of his stories draw from the unseen places of his life — the search for belonging, the ache of unanswered questions, and a belief that something greater watches over us, even in our darkest moments.
Today, Iwan is the Lead Technical Writer at his company and continues to craft stories filled with secrets, shadows, and humanity. He lives with his wife, Marna — his greatest inspiration and the heart of his world — and their spirited Jack Russell, Benji. Their love story is a miracle he plans to write about someday.
Iwan believes that the imagination is a shelter, a compass, and a lifeline. His message to aspiring writers is simple:
Every story begins with survival, and every survivor has a story worth telling.
In 2025, I stumbled upon a book that I decided to save on my shelf for later reading, Plastic Burlesque. However, once I finally started reading it, I found myself unable to put it down. The characters, especially Cy, were incredibly captivating, and I felt an immediate connection to their journey. One particular scene involving the Lipocopters was truly epic—I was so engrossed in the story that I nearly fell off my bed in surprise. The action sequences throughout the book kept me hooked from beginning to end, leaving me eagerly anticipating what would happen next. And just when I thought the story couldn’t get any better, there was an amazing and well-guarded twist at the end that left me completely satisfied. I must commend Iwan Ross on his exceptional storytelling skills—I am truly his biggest fan. In fact, I’m about to embark on my second read of the book, and I’m so enamored with it that I’ve even ordered a print edition, solely for the sake of cherishing the beautiful cover.
‘Plastic Burlesque, a novel in the genre of Young Adult Dystopian Fiction, is a wild ride navigated by Cy in the aftermath of the Solar Outage. As a result of this phenomenon, there is a great societal divide between the sharply contrasted Haves and Have-Nots: the elite, decadent metropolis of Utopia vs. the struggling inhabitants of a deteriorating Suburbia.
Motivated by love and vengeance, Cy and his sidekick, Solomon, guided by the underground Plastic Burlesque rebels, rely on wit and determination to decimate the Utopian oppressors on their turf.
From beginning to end, the reader embarks on an electrifying ride honed by the author’s plausible sci-fi gadgetry and the characters’ harrowing escapes at every turn. His vivid, sensory details enable the reader to become an omniscient viewer.
Facades are stripped bare. Security is an illusion. Alliances shift.
I highly recommend ‘Plastic Burlesque’ for its ability to keep the reader on high alert.
Plastic Burlesque by Iwan Ross is a dazzling dystopian tale brimming with rebellion, intrigue, and heart. Cy's fight for freedom in Utopia's twisted world of power and deception is grippig, while complex characters and high stakes keep you hooked. A thought-provoking read!
