This book takes you behind the scenes of 'Hellboy II - the Golden Army'. It presents an extensive look into the graphic novel-based film's evolution, from early concept art and diary sketches, to photos of the final props, sets, and filming. Also included is the complete screenplay.
Guillermo del Toro is a Mexican director mostly known for his acclaimed films Pan's Labyrinth, The Devils Backbone, Crimson Peak and the Hellboy film franchise. His films draw heavily on sources as diverse as weird fiction, fantasy, horror, and war. In 2009, Del Toro released his debut novel, The Strain, co-authored with Chuck Hogan, as the first part of The Strain Trilogy, an apocalyptic horror series featuring vampires. The series continued with The Fall in 2010 and concluded with The Night Eternal in 2011.
4? 4.5 stars? I'm a sucker for concept art tbh, so I really enjoyed this one! Sad we never got to see that final post-credits scene, or the third film for that matter, though. :(
Hellboy II is the kind of movie that begs for an art book and I'm happy to say this one mostly delivers. The style of art book reminds me a lot of the Star Wars ones in the sense that there is a script and the art appears in the order of the movie. The only downside to this is that there are quite a few pages where it is obvious they didn't have any interesting art to show so they just took images from the movie.
One other small complaint is that there isn't a great deal of explanation to the design of many of the characters. What is in the book is great, but I imagine most readers would like even more. The concept art in the book is almost all really good and focuses on the characters you would want to see. The set images were not as interesting visually as I expected, but this is made up for by some awesome storyboards. Overall, I really enjoyed this art book and think it is especially good for anyone who likes art or wants to see how the visual aspects of Hellboy II were created. If this book leaves you wanting more, check out the special features on Hellboy II's Blu-Ray (possibly on DVD too, I'm not sure), because they serve as a nice compliment to what's here.
A must-have companion if you own a copy of Hellboy II.
Included inside is a copy of the movie script as well as photo stills, artwork, concept designs, sketches, and commentary from the film crew - notably del Toro and Mignola.
The art is exquisite and can be very inspirational, even more so if you're a Mignola fan. What's more is that if you want to work in film/television, this book is handy because it gives an inside look at how productions are made and put together.
I got it because i wanted to have more photos and screenshots of prince NUada. He was irresistible as the rebel elf prince, speaks true to our hearts. In fact fanclubs sprang up overnight some still are existing now. Somewhat over the crush, i do like the hellboy characters very much. They are flawed and human, not invincible which is real.
I always enjoy books like this, but I felt that there wasn't really enough of the "behind the scenes" stuff. The pictures and drawings are nice, but I felt there could have been more explanations of them.
